Abstract:
Southern Paiutes of the Great Basin and Colorado Plateau have a deep connection to their environment. Since Creation, Southern Paiutes maintain that it is their duty to manage their environment to promote growth and sustainability within their ecosystem. They have developed numerous strategies and activities that have been integrated into their cultural system that increases biodiversity and biocomplexity throughout their homeland. The Southern Paiutes had a traditional leadership system that was responsible for the maintenance of social and ecological order throughout the Southern Paiute nation. The Southern Paiute leadership, more commonly referred to as the High Chiefs, was a multi-layered system that functioned on national, regional, and local levels. This essay examines the roles and functions the High Chiefs had traditionally in Southern Paiute culture and how it was used to maintain the Southern Paiute way of life and their environment.

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Knowledge management is an organisational science field that is viewed by many as a panacea to the challenge of successfully managing knowledge intensive organisations. Knowledge management is marked by a clear departure from traditional management thinking that viewed the ideal organisation as a bureaucracy with a clear hierarchical structure. Much of this has been the natural result of advances in information technology making new ways of working possible, but frequently, flatter structures are advocated on the assumption that knowledge work is necessarily stifled in hierarchical structures. The thesis sets out to show that whilst this assumption might be true, it can also be ideological if based on a naive conception of hierarchy and organisation. This is done by describing various notions of hierarchy that go beyond the pure bureaucratic form. Thereafter it is demonstrated that these more nuanced notions of hierarchy lie at the core of some of the foundational knowledge management theories. The first chapter gives an overview of management thinking; connecting and contrasting scientific management with knowledge management. The case is made for why many assume that knowledge management is inherently anti-hierarchical. The second chapter describes the various notions of hierarchy by tracing the historical origins of the word and exploring how it has found multiple meanings in the context of society and organisations. Four prominent usage contexts of the notion of hierarchy emerge. The first usage is that of control where hierarchy refers to bureaucracies. The second usage examines the use of hierarchy in identifying various organisational cultures (Markets, Clans, Adhocracies and Hierarchies). The third usage applies to organisation sensemaking levels. The fourth usage refers to the use of hierarchy as it applies to organisations as the coupling of systems and subsystems. In the third chapter it is demonstrated to what extent each of these notions of hierarchy informs selected mainstream knowledge management theories. It is argued that there are multiple contexts in which the notion of hierarchy can be used and observed in knowledge management thinking. The fourth chapter concludes by restating the multiple meanings of organisational hierarchy and discussing the implications for knowledge management. The thesis comes to the conclusion that the notion of hierarchy is readily acknowledged and used in knowledge management thinking, albeit in different contexts and in more nuanced ways than merely as control. What is needed is to take these various contexts into account before a claim can be made that hierarchy is bad or good for knowledge management. A better conceptualisation of what is meant by hierarchy shows that such blanket claims are neither accurate nor instructive.

Abstract:
In a rapidly growing global economy businesses must effectively manage their assets to remain competitive and promote company growth. Many companies are only now beginning to realize that employee knowledge is a valuable asset to their business and also needs to be managed. Organizations are exploring different ways to improve the sharing of knowledge within a business and how to keep employee’s with key knowledge within the business. This study investigates social media and the impact of business hierarchy on knowledge sharing within an organization. The use of social media, in our particular case, wikis, within an organization is investigated as part of the broader term Enterprise 2.0. This study is based on the theoretical understanding of wikis as tools that enable internalization, externalization and objectification of knowledge. This study investigates what may be the contributing factors that affect an employee’s use of a centralized wiki for knowledge sharing. This study focuses on the employees of a British software development and training company, SoftX, and used a mixed method research strategy based on the use of online surveys and face-to-face interviews. We used an online tool, SurveyMonkey, to register and correlate responses to our survey. In total, 99 responses were received and semi-structured, face-to-face interviews were conducted with five employees.   Correlations were used in establishing foundation for the analysis of the variables. Finally, the causality between the assumed factors affecting the use of the SoftX wiki is tested using multiple linear regression analysis. Several important factors presented themselves as a result of our study at SoftX which could explain the apparent lack of use of their wiki as a means of knowledge sharing within the business. The analysis demonstrates that the use of the SoftX's wiki by employees was influenced by organizational, personal and technological factors.

Abstract:

Galvin, Michael. "Culture, change and the management of London's taxi drivers." Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/17517.

Full text
Abstract:
This research has been based on my experiences of London taxi drivers, both before I entered the London Taxi Industry, whilst studying to be a London taxi driver and during the thirty years I spent within the industry in a number of roles. My research has been undertaken in an inductive, broadly ideographic style. The study has been developed through initially narrating my experiences and observations in the industry and then analysing this account reflexively. The material that formed the basis of my narrative account was collected in an ethnographic style. In addition to my narrative account I also referenced the small amount of published material concerning the London taxi industry and interviewed a number of taxi drivers. A significant constraint was the lack of peer reviewed literature concerning taxi drivers and the taxi industry. Once I had developed my narrative account I then interpreted it in order to better understand the experiences and observations, the institutions and the people within the industry to understand and relate how they react and behave within their environment. The analysis involved deconstruction and interpretation against a framework of relevant literature to facilitate my understanding and assist sense making. I also interpreted the interactions with those outside of the taxi drivers' environment and analysed the persona that journalists and others have constructed that is meant to represent the London Taxi Driver. I considered the identity and characteristics implied by journalists with the prevailing culture and the identity that taxi drivers and the industry sought to portray. The qualification to become a taxi driver is known as the Knowledge of London. The Knowledge, as it is known in the industry, is recognised as an onerous task and has developed according to many in the industry into a rite of passage. I found that this process, with its rituals and arcane practices, which are accepted consensually by the industry, had a significant effect on the taxi drivers' identity and their status amongst non-taxi driver peers. Taxi driving is considered in working class circles to be at the upper end of a hierarchy of professional driving roles largely due to the achievement of passing the Knowledge of London together with the earning opportunity, perceived job security and flexibility afforded by being one's own boss. Knowledge of London students and taxi drivers appear to demonstrate common behavioural traits which I have explored in my research. London's taxi drivers appear to fear an assimilation of their role with other lower status driving roles and this fear has a significant effect on any attempts at change within the industry or within its institutions. The institutions within the industry provided much material for me to consider in the context of their alignment or clash with the culture of the industry. Changes in business processes and some of the institutions' relationships with their taxi driver stakeholders and the challenges to the industry's culture are considered as case studies within my reflexive account. The contribution to original knowledge is the insight into the culture and identity of London's Taxi Drivers, the behaviours and relationships within the industry both between drivers and the institutions that regulate, represent and benefit from the industry. Taxi drivers' responses to organisational and business process change. Further contributions to original knowledge are provided from the realisation that much of the structure developed within conventional organisations by management has developed organically without management intervention in the taxi industry. Many of the traits of life in offices and factories are likewise present in the London Taxi Industry despite the disparate and virtual nature of the industry and its reliance on consensual adoption of rules and practice rather than managerial influence and formal processes and procedures.

"The Development of a Hybrid Knowledge-Based System for Lean Six Sigma Implementation in Healthcare Environment: The Development of a Hybrid Knowledge-Based (KB)/Gauging Absence of Pre-Requisites (GAP)/Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) Model for Implementing Lean Six Sigma System in Healthcare Environment." Thesis, University of Bradford, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/17451.

Abstract:
To improve their services and maintain patients’ satisfaction, healthcare organisations have adopted and applied different quality tools and models in recent times, with some even developing their own quality-based initiatives. For example, the approach of Lean Six Sigma (L6σ) has recently been gradually and slowly implemented in healthcare institutions. However, the nature and complexity of healthcare environment which directly impact on humans require leaders to carefully apply appropriate Quality Management (QM) systems suitable for this critical environment. The aim of this research project is to develop a Knowledge Based System (KBS) to assist healthcare managers and practitioners during decision-making process in the context of achieving excellent benchmark and action plans prioritisation. The system will be built based on a conceptual framework for Quality Management in Healthcare Environment (QMHE) which will be modified into a model. The KBS will be developed from this model with the integration of Gauging Absence of Pre-requisite (GAP) method for benchmarking and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method for prioritisation. The contribution of this research is the use of KBS with GAP and AHP to develop an integrated Knowledge-Based Lean Six Sigma (KB-L6σ) in QMHE. This will accomplish the necessities of investigating quality problems and recommend suitable solutions according to international best practices. It will use a systematic approach that can be applied multiple times, follow defined steps to secure consistency in the approach and integrate different healthcare management levels to maintain strategic decision-making alignment. It consists of 964 KB rules that have been produced via a knowledge acquisition process from the literature and interviewing experts in the field of QM and L6σ in healthcare environment. Feedback from conferences and system testing were used for the verification of the model, whilst validation was carried out through three case studies implementation at three tertiary hospitals in Oman. The analysis of using the KB system in these hospitals has shown clearly that the developed system is a consistent and reliable methodology for assisting decision-makers in designing, planning, and implementing L6σ for QMHE.

"The design and development of a knowledge-based lean six sigma maintenance system for sustainable buildings : the design and development of a hybrid Knowledge-Based (KB)/Gauging Absence of Pre-requisites (GAP)/Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) model for implementing lean six sigma maintenance system in sustainable buildings' environment." Thesis, University of Bradford, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/16021.

Full text
Abstract:
The complexity of sustainable building maintenance environment requires managers to define and implement appropriate quality benchmark system suitable for this function. Lean Six Sigma (LSS) is one of the most effective process improvement and optimization philosophy that maintenance organisations can implement in their environment. However, literature review has shown that 90% of failures in LSS implementations are due to lack of readiness to change, the unawareness of the required benchmark organisation capabilities, and improper control of priorities. The contribution of the current research approach is in developing a hybrid Knowledge-Based (KB)/GAP/AHP System, consisting of three stages (Planning, Designing and Implementation) and containing over 2500 KB rules. The KB System can assist the decision-makers in identifying the obstacles behind the organisation readiness to change into a benchmark LSS maintenance environment. Thus the KB System will be used to achieve benchmark standards by determining the gap existing between the current environment and the benchmark goal, and then suggest a detailed plan to overcome these hurdles in a prioritised and structured manner, thus achieving cost benefits. To ensure its consistency and reliability, the KB System was validated in three Oman-based maintenance organisations, and one published case study for a UK-based organisation. The results from the validation were positive with the System output suggesting list of top priorities and action plans for achieving benchmark LSS standards for these organisations. The research concludes that the developed KB System is a consistent and reliable methodology for assisting decision-makers in designing, planning, and implementing LSS for benchmark sustainable building maintenance.

Abstract:
The dependency of maintenance as a manufacturing logistic function has made the considerations of maintenance decisions complex in nature. The importance of maintenance has escalated significantly by the increasing of automation in manufacturing processes. This condition switches the traditional maintenance perspective of “fire-fighter” into the business competitive driver. As a consequence, maintenance needs to consider other related aspects of decision making to achieve competitive advantage. This research aims to develop a hybrid Knowledge-Based (KB) System/GAP/AHP methodology to support the integration of maintenance decision with business and manufacturing perspectives. It constructs over 2000 KB rules on Strategic Stage (business and manufacturing aspects) and Maintenance Operations Stage (maintenance aspects). Each aspect contains KB rules attached with GAP analysis to assess the gap between current and prerequisite condition. AHP analysis is then deployed to compare those aspects structurally in a pair-wise manner to identify the critical ones to be rectified. This hybrid KB system is useful in reviewing the existing maintenance system performance and provides reasonable recommendations to improve maintenance performance with respect to business and manufacturing perspectives. Eventually, it indicates the roadmap from the current state to the benchmark goals for the maintenance system. This novel methodology of KBS/GAP/AHP to support maintenance decision is developed for a particular application in the automotive environment. The validation is conducted in two automotive companies in Indonesia and one published case study in an automotive company. The result confirms that the developed KB system can provide the valid, reasonable and consistent result to propose structured recommendation for maintenance improvement priority.

Moud, Nawawi Mohd Kamal. "The development of a hybrid knowledge-based Collaborative Lean Manufacturing Management (CLMM) system for an automotive manufacturing environment : the development of a hybrid Knowledge-Based (KB)/ Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP)/ Gauging Absences of Pre-Requisites (GAP) Approach to the design of a Collaborative Lean Manufacturing Management (CLMM) system for an automotive manufacturing environment." Thesis, University of Bradford, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/3353.

Abstract:
The automotive manufacturing facility is extremely complex and expensive system. Managing and understanding the dynamics of automotive manufacturing is a challenging endeavour. In the current era of dynamic global competition, a new concept such as Collaborative Lean Manufacturing Management (CLMM) can be implemented as an alternative for organisations to improve their Lean Manufacturing Management (LMM) processes. All members in the CLMM value chain must work together towards common objectives in order to make the LMM achievable in the collaborative environment. The novel research approach emphasises the use of Knowledge-Based (KB) approach in such activities as planning, designing, assessing and providing recommendations of CLMM implementation, through: a) developing the conceptual CLMM model; b) designing the KBCLMM System structure based on the conceptual model; and c) implementing Gauging Absences of Pre-requisites (GAP) analysis and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) approach in the hybrid KBCLMM. The development of KBCLMM Model is the most detailed part in the research process and consists of five major components in two stages. Stage 1 (Planning stage) consists of Organisation Environment, Collaborative Business and Lean Manufacturing components. Stage 2 (Design stage) consists of Organisation CLMM Capability and Organisation CLMM Alignment components. Each of these components consists of sub-components and activities that represent particular issues in the CLMM development. From the conceptual model, all components were transformed into the KBCLMM System structure, which is embedded with the GAP and AHP techniques, and thus, key areas of potential improvement in the LMM are identified for each activity along with the identification of both qualitative and quantitative aspects for CLMM implementation. In order to address the real situation of CLMM operation, the research validation was conducted for an automotive manufacturer's Lean Manufacturing Chain in Malaysia. Published case studies were also used to test several modules for their validity and reliability. This research concludes that the developed KBCLMM System is an appropriate Decision Support System tool to provide the opportunity for academics and industrialists from the fields of industrial engineering, information technology, and operation management to plan, design and implement LMM for a collaborative environment.

Abstract:
The product development process for the automotive industry is normally complicated, lengthy, expensive, and risky. Hence, a study on a new concept for Low Volume Automotive Manufacturing (LVAM), used for niche car models manufacturing, is proposed to overcome this issue. The development of a hybrid Knowledge Based (KB) System, which is a blend of KB System, Gauging Absences of Pre-requisites (GAP), and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is proposed for LVAM research. The hybrid KB/GAP/AHP System identifies all potential elements of LVAM issues throughout the development of this system. The KB System used in the LVAM analyses the gap between the existing and the benchmark organisations for an effective implementation. The novelty and differences in the current research approach emphasises the use of Knowledge Based (KB) System in the planning and designing stages by suggesting recommendations of LVAM implementation, through: a) developing the conceptual LVAM model; b) designing the KBLVAM System structure based on the conceptual LVAM model; and c) embedding Gauging Absences of Pre-requisites (GAP) analysis and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) approach in the hybrid KBLVAM System. The KBLVAM Model explores five major perspectives in two stages. Planning Stage (Stage 1) consists of Manufacturer Environment Perspective (Level 0), LVAM Manufacturer Business Perspective (Level 1), and LVAM Manufacturer Resource Perspective (Level 2). Design Stage (Stage 2) consists of LVAM Manufacturer Capability - Car Body Part Manufacturing Perspective (Level 3), LVAM Manufacturer Capability - Competitive Priorities Perspective (Level 4), and LVAM Manufacturer Capability - Lean Process Optimisation Perspective (Level 5). Each of these perspectives consists of modules and sub-modules that represent specific subjects in the LVAM development. Based on the conceptual LVAM model, all perspectives were transformed into the KBLVAM System structure, which is embedded with the GAP and AHP techniques, hence, key areas of potential improvement are recommended for each activity for LVAM implementation. In order to be able to address the real situation of LVAM environment, the research verification was conducted for two automotive manufacturers in Malaysia. Some published case studies were also used to check several modules for their validity and reliability. This research concludes that the developed KBLVAM System provides valuable decision making information and knowledge to assist LVAM practitioners to plan, design and implement LVAM in terms of business organisation, manufacturing aspects and practices.

Recent research about the identification of factors that contribute to better sharing of knowledge and ways to evaluate this topic highlight the importance of knowledge management for the organization. Exploring opportunities in this scenario, the present study examines the share of the workers' knowledge in the automotive industry by factors related to the Production Organization, Work Organization and Knowledge Management, with attention to the influence of organizational and interpersonal context in the knowledge sharing process. This delimitation of the industrial sector in the light of the production area is justified by this area has dependence of the workers' tacit knowledge. The research uses a qualitative and quantitative approach in survey format and uses a questionnaire with managers (coordinators and supervisors) to assess the importance of leveraging factors of knowledge management in the view of the leadership body. It employed the Incomplete Pairwise Comparison method proposed by Harker (1986) based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process of Saaty (1977). The survey shows an integration between the factors and highlights the importance of systemic and technical conversation among the workers to improve their knowledge sharing, plus the role of communication, training and work instruction in the knowledge conversion processes. This research expands the theme of the conceptual limits knowledge management found in literature and contributes mainly in managerial direction for the qualification and learning new employees in the continuous process of recycling knowledge and mitigation of knowledge waste. Thus, it contributes to the promotion of an enabling environment for the creation and sharing of knowledge by the people of the workers' environment.

Knowledge sharing and organizational trust are factors of great interest in research on knowledge management. This thesis aims to identify how organizational trust influences the sharing knowledge propensity in strong hierarchical structures, studying the effects of career satisfaction, organizational commitment and time of exposure to hierarchy in this process. The hypothetical-deductive method, applied with the structural equation models technique to a sample of 655 military professionals of the Brazilian Army resulted in the mediation of affective organizational commitment in the relationship between organizational trust and knowledge sharing propensity. The results also suggest that perceived receipt of useful knowledge and marital status are significant variables to explain the variance of the knowledge sharing propensity. Finally, the time of exposure to hierarchy directly impacts the studied variables, however, do not interfere in the relationship between the organizational commitment and the propensity of knowledge sharing. The results of this thesis contribute to a better understanding the knowledge sharing phenomenon in the organizational environment.

Abstract:
Brand awareness and its establishment among consumers has been a central theme in previous research on marketing as it is proven to indirectly induce purchase. It is thus seen as crucial for marketers to establish brand awareness. However, a research gap is apparent in regard to creating brand awareness among Generation Z. More specifically, this study focuses on which communication channel that is best suited for establishing brand awareness for this generational cohort. Hence, the purpose of this study is to explicitly analyse the linkage between these variables and provide a guideline for companies targeting Generation Z. To obtain a deeper understanding, previous research has been reviewed and an extensive data collection has been conducted including two methods; interviews and a survey to obtain empirical evidence and valuable insights. The qualitative data was of main focus with the quantitative data gave more of an overview. By combining and evaluating the empirical findings in relation to previous research and theory we could identify patterns and relationships that eventually led to the conclusion and final results of this thesis. The initial results concluded from this study underlined the importance of brand awareness since it was the first step for the purpose of inducing purchases. In addition, the results also highlight the importance of building upon brand awareness to establish brand liking as it will provide for the increase of purchase intention. For establishing brand awareness when targeting Generation Z, Instagram is a means of preference and should be considered as part of a mix of various communication channels in using integrated marketing communications.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to contribute to the understanding of HOLC in context of the HSCM and to propose a decision model which applies to the phases of HOLC the decision making regarding a real situation . This include the implementation of the proposed model to design and develop a decision support tool in order to improve the performance of humanitarian logistics in both national and international relief operations. This research is divided into three phases; the first phase is to clarify and define HL among HSCM, commercial supply chain management (CSCM) and SCM and their relationship. Project Life Cycle Management (PLCM) approaches are also presented. The difference between project life cycle management (PLM) and PLCM is also required to distinguish a clear understanding which can be addressed in the phase of humanitarian operation life cycle. Additionally, the literature of Multiple-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) models and existing decision aid system for HL are analyzed to establish the research gap. The MCDM approaches which implement the decision support system (DSS) and lastly how DSS has been used in the HSCM context. The second phase is to propose a decision model based on MCDM approaches to support the decision of the decision maker before he/she takes action. This model provides the ranking alternatives to warehouse, supplier and transportation over the phases of HOLC. The proposed decision model is conducted in 3 scenarios; I. The decision in 4-phase HOLC, international relief operation of French Red Cross (FRC). II. The decision on 3-phase HOLC, national operation by the Thai Red Cross (TRC). III. The decision on response phase HOLC, international operation by the FRC in four countries. In this phase, the scenario I and II are performed step by step though numerical calculation and mathematical formulas. The scenario III will be presented in the third phase. In the third phase, an application of web-based multi-criteria decision support system (WB-MCDSS) which implement the proposed model is developed. The web-based multi-criteria decision support system is developed based on the integration of analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and TOPSIS approaches. In order to achieve an appropriate decision in a real time response, the WB-MCDSS is developed based on server-client protocol and is simple to operate. Last but not least, a validation application of the model is performed using the sensitivity analysis approach

This thesis aims to discuss one of the statements that is part of the discourse of School Mathematics Education: "The students do not learn Mathematics by 'lack of basic skills'”. The study uses the following Foucault’s notions: statement, discourse, truth and regimes of thruth. The research material analized consists of utterances of a college group of the Teacher Induction Program (Pibid), which emerged from interviews, field diary, and their final reports; and also for theses, dissertations and scholarly articles from the period of 1996 to 2014, available on the website of Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel portal (CAPES) and the media, referring to the statement object of the study. The analysis of the research material showed: 1) the recurrence of utterances that link the difficulty in learning Mathematics to "lack of basic skills" of students; 2) The statement "The students do not learn Mathematics by 'lack of basic skills' " is interlaced with two other statements presented in the pedagogical discourse: a) The scholar Mathematics is consisted of a hierarchical set of knowledges (which has close ties with the statement - The mathematical knowledge is hierarchical); b) The school curriculum is hierarchical, thus, follows a linear ordering.

Result of an ethnographic research among the Waikhana (Pira-Tapuia), a Tukanoan group that lives around the Uaupes basin, Amazonian Northwest, this dissertation focuses on hierarchy and circulation of knowledge in Uaupes contemporary context. This context is characterized by what has been called by the indigenous groups as culture recovery and revitalization movement . Involved in this local dynamics, the Waikhana attempt to recover by one side some ritual practices and traditional techniques of environment handling and by the other side the written record of certain oral knowledge in former times updated and transacted in ritual occasions. Trying to understand the way the indigenous are experiencing those processes and emphasizing their developments in the sphere of their own sociopolitical relations, this text approaches some classical themes on regional literature concerning social organization and cosmology. Some interpretations and redirections made by the indigenous themselves, concerning the problematic of hierarchy and circulation of knowledge will be presented. And will show that these interpretations and redirections bring some relations and positions of a Waikhana (cosmos) politics up to date.

Abstract:
This research proposes an interpretation of transgression in the museum: it is understood as a prism through which to look at the architecture of the norms that govern the conceptual structure and apprehension of knowledge. The case of the music museum, observed through fieldwork in two different museums (the musée de la Musique in Paris and the Grassi Museum für Musikinstrumente in Leipzig, Germany), highlights the complexity of the steps undertaken to achieve this architecture and the problems they raise. The interviews held with visitors have indeed drawn attention to the paradox of musealizing objects which are primarily meant to produce music. The first part of my thesis intends to disentangle the multiple epistemes on which the museum of musical instruments is built. I point to the conceptions of musical knowledge around which instrument museums are organized and which they in turn, have helped to shape. The reactions of the visitors (some of them transgressive) when faced with the display of musical knowledge in the museum, also draws attention to the norms which delimit their status, and that of their own knowledge in the organization of the museum as an institution. The second part of the thesis is therefore structured around an analysis of the subsomption of the diversity of the museum visitors under the heading "museum audience" at the turn of the 20th Century. The third part focuses on the sensorial norms imposed by the museum apparatus. I analyze the conception of the sensorium on which the museum relies in order to transmit knowledge to its public and I show how the transgressions of visitors to the music museum shed light on the limits of this conception

Abstract:
The intergeneration transfer of technical and professional knowledge within the Tunisian banking system thanks to the training on the job belongs to the traditional culture of the financial sector. This kind of archaic training, it hasn’t disappeared. The Tunisian banks have as well already integrated new and modern ways of training. The international comparison with German banks allows to underline the external recruiting of young graduated people from universities. Moreover, and despite the fact that the Tunisian banking system is following the German training example which is due to lead to more synergies between employees and hierarchy, we notice that the internal culture is deteriorating more and more because of the introduction of managing practises which only take into account the maximisation of the banks profit abilities. In a context of renew generation and opening to the international competition, the management introduce new management practices and want to change the internal culture with keeping this technical and professional knowledge to permitting a codification

Abstract:
The now taken-for-granted notion that data lead to information, which leads to knowledge, which in turn leads to wisdom was first specified in detail by R. L. Ackoff in 1988. The Data-Information-Knowledge-Wisdom hierarchy is based on filtration, reduction, and transformation. Besides being causal and hierarchical, the scheme is pyramidal, in that data are plentiful while wisdom is almost nonexistent. Ackoffâ s formula linking these terms together this way permits us to ask what the opposite of knowledge is and whether analogous principles of hierarchy, process, and pyramiding apply to it. The inversion of the Data-Information-Knowledge-Wisdom hierarchy produces a series of opposing terms (including misinformation, error, ignorance, and stupidity) but not exactly a chain or a pyramid. Examining the connections between these phenomena contributes to our understanding of the contours and limits of knowledge.

Abstract:
The paper evaluates the Data-Information-Knowledge-Wisdom (DIKW) Hierarchy. This hierarchy is part of the canon of information science and management. The paper considers whether the hierarchy, also known as the ‘Knowledge Hierarchy’, is a useful and intellectually desirable construct to introduce, whether the views expressed about DIKW are true and have evidence in favour of them, and whether there are good reasons offered or sound assumptions made about DIKW. Arguments are offered that the hierarchy is unsound and methodologically undesirable. The paper identifies a central logical error that DIKW makes. The paper identifies the dated and unsatisfactory philosophical positions of operationalism and inductivism as the philosophical backdrop to the hierarchy. The paper concludes with a sketch of some positive theories, of value to information science, on the nature of the components of the hierarchy: that data is anything recordable in a semantically and pragmatically sound way, that information is what is known in other literature as ‘weak knowledge’, that knowledge also is ‘weak knowledge’ and that wisdom is the possession and use.

Distributed group key management scheme (DGMS) is a new class of group key management protocols. In DGMS, there is no group controller and keys are generated by members individually. Adusumilli et al. proposed the first DGMS scheme, distributed group key distribution (DGKD). In DGKD, members play roles of sponsors to generate keys, or co-distributors to help distribute keys. Sponsors and co-distributors are re-determined when members join or leave. So every member stores a common group tree locally. We observe two storage problems in DGKD, redundant keys and group information. This disadvantage makes storage extremely unscalable when membership changes. Based on DGKD, we propose a new DGMS scheme, EDGE. Each member stores only partial group information individually. Structure of EDGE is more flexible than the structure of DGKD without losing security. Furthermore, we prove that EDGE is more efficient than DGKD in storage and re-keying time.

A fundamental problem with today's object-oriented methods is that it is very difficult to generate class hierarchy along with classes. The goal of this thesis is to develop a knowledge- based prototype tool for object-oriented designers so that they can easily create class hierarchy from given flat class structures. This tool consists of an analysis part and a user interface part. The analysis part uses fuzzy control inference to analyze the attributes/methods name and then extract similar class hierarchy from the knowledge base. The enterprises have dynamic capability to deal with change of external environment, thus can immediately and completely provide the strategic guidelines to respond to changeable environment, as well as establish and maintain organizational advantages in the industry. In order to have dynamic capability, enterprises must effectively adopt employees’ knowledge, technology and capability (knowing-how), trigger employees’ potential and satisfy employees’ expectation of development (knowing-why). Therefore, they should continuously expand with the limited resources and capacity. However, in order to survive in the competitive market, enterprises must integrate, construct and distribute internal and external resources to establish long-term competitive advantages. Thus, this study explores the relationship among career capital, knowledge management and dynamic capability of organizations of international high shareholding structure. According to validated results of this study, (一) dispatched supervisors’ knowing-why positively influences applied knowledge management and exploratory knowledge of organizations with international high shareholding structure; (二) dispatched supervisors’ applied knowledge management and exploratory knowledge management positively influence dynamic capability of international high shareholding structure. Hence, results of this study show that three kinds of career capital, knowing-how, knowing-why and knowing-whom, influence knowledge management differently. Significance of enhancement of applied and exploratory knowledge management on dynamic capability of organizations is different. Thus, multi-national enterprises adopt career capital and knowledge management as measures for business development and enhancing dynamic capability, in order to strengthen their competitiveness.

In the real word, humans often consult others when meeting the problems. An English proverb says: “Two heads are better than one.” Humans always hope to get a lot of advices from different experts for solving problems. Individual experts have their own perspective and preference and will be in conflict on alternatives. It is a group decision-making problem, the experts strive for the same goal. Hence, conflicts may occur, an important issue is agents how to reach a consensus. Humans often resolve the conflicts during group decision making using the following steps: 1. Vote 2. Rank 3. Choose. In the similar idea, we propose our approach. We propose a knowledge-based AHP method instead of voting method. In this mechanism, individual agent acquires the weights of the alternatives that use knowledge-based system to reason rules. According to the weights of the alternatives, agents can rank the order of preferences and express their degree of preferences. After summating all weight of alternatives, a user would choose the highest weight of alternative. We survey some research of cooperation and negotiation and propose our method. Besides, we construct Selection the Wafer Fab Location System to implement our theory and get the solutions that we satisfied.

In recent years, the quantity of our higher education has saturated because of large growth and popularization. Joining WTO, foreign schools and schools across strait have also impacted the competition. Even Ministry of Education has proposed some education innovation policies like identifying key university, proclaiming related innovation plans and more flexible educational policies, the educational resource is still much lower than the demand. All institutions have to contend for the limited resources. Therefore, both public and private universities are seeking for strategies to strengthen their performance and adjust their visions and distinguishing features accordingly. This research is based on school’s performance to quantify the department’s performance evaluation and conduct a comparative analysis to come out with a practical pattern. The fuzzy AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process), the standardization and the DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) will be adopted to study the weight and value of each indicator as well as evaluate each department’s performance. It will then establish a general methodology for performance evaluation and business management. In addition, contribute to the institution’s future development effectively.

The cost of medical care is snowballing at an alarming and unmaintainable rate universally. Consequently, the need for a trusted quality management (QM) system at healthcare organizations is a must. Such system will aid the healthcare governance to increase the effectiveness and decrease the cost. It will help in minimizing the risk and enhancing patient safety. Several challenges facing healthcare QM in Oman are creating computerizing monitoring tool and confirming commitment of decision makers at all levels. The Report of Quality and Patient Safety (RQPS) in Oman 2016 highlighted the low level of patient safety and quality culture among staff. It recommended to inaugurate a well-defined organizational chart based on each healthcare organization’s vision and mission. Therefore, it is important to design a national accreditation system that is accredited by an international accreditation body. Such step will help in prioritizing the needs and minimizing the cost of maintaining and upgrading systems. To overcome these challenges, this article is presenting a novel methodology of hybrid knowledge-based (KB) system to assess QM in healthcare environment (QMHE) using gauging absence of prerequisites tool for benchmarking and analytical hierarchy process for prioritizing. The KB-QMHE model can be used as a standard to assess QM at any healthcare organization around the globe. The results showed that 852 questions were answered by the quality managers in a tertiary hospital in Oman; the percentage of bad points in this hospital was 32%. The KB-QMHE model has clearly shown that the priority 1, in level 0, is to focus on the patient-centered dimension in the healthcare quality dimensions submodule. Output, also, suggested a prioritized action plan covering healthcare governance module, healthcare leadership module and healthcare organization’s resources module in level 1–3.

Designing and implementing Performance Measurement System (PMS) is an integral part of management control systems. This paper presents an original and novel approach to designing and benchmarking of PMSs for a manufacturing environment through a hybrid framework which overcomes the shortcomings of earlier models. A detailed review was taken of previous models and their limitations were identified. The present hybrid PMS model seeks to improve the earlier research models by the following novel approach: implementation of a Knowledge Based (KB) expert system, Gauging Absences of Pre-requisite (GAP) analysis and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methodology in an integrated KBPMS. The paper has shown that the present hybrid (KB-AHP-GAP) approach to developing a KBPMS model is a realistic methodology. The combination of the KB-AHP-GAP approach allows detailed benchmarking of the PMS existing within a manufacturing organisation. Furthermore, this approach can assist in identifying and prioritising the key decisions that need to be actioned to overcome the existing PMS shortcomings.

Reis, Inês Filipa Coutinho. "A knowledge-based decision support system for sustainable city livability evaluation." Master's thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/14605.

Abstract:
The real estate industry is an important indicator of national economies and is influenced by the environment in which it operates. Several countries were seriously affected by the most recent international financial crisis, including Portugal. Nevertheless, it is still an interesting area to invest in, in spite of the challenges cities may face nowadays that influence their sustainable livability. For this reason, it seems logical to develop and apply methodologies aimed at evaluating sustainable city livability. It is worth noting, however, that there are methodological limitations typically associated with the majority of the current applications (e.g. how to select and weight criteria in the evaluation), which have been hampering the progress. Hence, this dissertation aims to develop a knowledge-based decision support system to evaluate sustainable city livability, in a transparent and informed way. To achieve this goal, it combines cognitive mapping techniques and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The advantages and limitations of this integrative evaluation model are also analyzed and discussed.

"Theorizing the State of Health Practices and Climate in Construction via Fourfold Structuration." Doctoral diss., 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.44106.

Abstract:
abstract: Regulatory agencies, such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), recognize that decisions regarding occupational health are often economically driven, with worker health only a secondary concern (Ruttenberg, 2014). To investigate the four National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) long-standing health concerns—welding fumes, crystalline silica, noise, and musculoskeletal disorders—a mixed methods research is conducted. Fourfold structuration, a holistic communication process with roots in indigenous/ancient knowledge, is used to organize data and facilitate making tangible relationships of health to productivity and profits that are abstract and often stated by industries, such as construction, as difficult to quantify. From both construction trade worker and occupational health and safety expert interviews data/codes are developed. For the qualitative method, the codes are organized into a constructivist grounded theory depicting the construction industry with regard to its foundation – profits. A theoretical exercise translating the qualitative codes into potential productivity losses is presented as a way for quantifying the abstract relationships of health to productivity. For the quantitative study, the data/codes are used to develop a comprehensive list of practices, barriers to, and catalysts for addressing health in construction. A significant quantitative finding is that occupational health and safety (OSH) experts are not traditionally involved at the highest levels of the OSHA Hierarchy of Controls, where the greatest opportunity to prevent exposure to health hazards is possible. Organized via a holistic framework, this research emphasizes our primary responsibility to each other as highlighted in recent NIOSH worker health agendas.

Godrie, Baptiste.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a contribution of social epistemology on the construction and nature of professional and experiential knowledge of mental health issues and an exploration of their relationship rooted in a research projet in Montreal. This federal research and demonstration project aims to assess the impact of the Housing First approach for homeless people with mental health problems. In Montreal, people with a lived experience of the realities of mental health and homelessness have been involved in the research project. Over the months, the presence of these peers had mixed effects, contributing sometimes to build up barriers between different types of knowledge and existing professional hierarchies, and allowing, on other occasions, to overcome them and get into a process of co-production of new knowledge and practices. The analysis underlines the complementary nature of professional and experiential knowledge in the field of health and social services and the strength of the experimental approach mobilized in the project. This thesis also provides a contribution to the literature on citizen participation by offering a look on the capacity of the citizens to transform the state institutions. The qualitative data was collected both throughout observation during a PhD field work and fifty individual and group interviews conducted between 2012 and 2013 with 25 peer support workers, clinical staff (nurses, social workers, and psychologists), program managers and psychiatrists.
