Abstract:
In this paper I summarize some key findings from a three-year study of the high school-university transition for students attending a large arts and science faculty, within the context of their first university chemistry course. I then discuss these results within the broader context of research on success in higher education. Final conclusions are drawn from both my own observations and participant discussion from the session at the 2009 Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) conference at the University of New Brunswick.

Abstract:
The work of Amsterdam architects Felix Claus and Kees Kaan is moving away from formulae associated with modern architecture. This paper studies their attempt to find meaning which is at once more abstract and more direct, and notes that a guiding light in their search is a fundamental concern with the physical realities and compromises of the building process.

Abstract:
The design and construction of this canopy and landscape for a small courtyard [1] took the form of an adventure in digital design and low-tech construction. The installation was for the end of year party in June 2002 at the Academie van Bouwkunst in Amsterdam. The courtyard occupies a central space in the school adjacent to the main lecture hall and contains a historic cobblestone court [2]. One of the design team, Neil Leach, proposed that it should be transformed into an enchanted garden suggestive of Dutch greenhouses and Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Abstract:
This article discusses the opposition between “high” and “low” forms of culture as related to the emergence of literacy in society. Some empirical evidence (for the differences between high and low artistic products in terms of object properties and users' expectations) is discussed. The origin of the difference lies, so the argument runs, in the codification of high products and values through the writing system, which can subsequently act as external and independent quality control. Hence the acquisition of literacy is indicative and mimetic with respect to the initiation into high culture.

: This study investigates the effect of price promotions for musicals on consumer perception of fairness toward other similar musicals and the role of consumer involvement in performing arts as a moderating variable. A threshold regression estimation which was performed using data from a survey on South Korean consumers showed a decrease in consumers’ fairness perception once they became aware of discounts on similar performing arts and, consequently, a decrease in their intent to purchase tickets at regular prices. The results also showed that the samples can be split into low- and high-invol

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide novel insights into arts consumption behaviour and patterns of communication displayed by arts consumers using Peterson’s theoretical framework, and to identify differences in the use of communication channels across arts segments. Design/methodology/approach – The authors conducted an a priori market segmentation study, with two variables serving as segmentation criteria, namely, the frequency of and the variety of arts events attended. The authors tested for differences in communication patterns. Findings – Four segments were created: low-fre
