Abstract:
Laser-assisted machining has been considered as an alternative for difficult-to-machine materials such as metallic alloys and ceramics. Machining of some materials such as high chromium alloys and high strength steels is still a delicate and challenging task. Conventional machines or computer numerical control (CNC) machines and cutting tools cannot adapt easily to such materials and induce very high costs for operations of rough machining or finishing. If laser-assisted machining can be implemented successfully for such materials, it will offer several advantages over the traditional methods

Abstract:
The mining and mineral processing industries feature very harsh service environments that often severely limit the service life of components and equipment used. High Cr white cast irons are usually the material of choice for many high wear applications that also require some amount of corrosion resistance. The excellent wear performance of these alloys is attributed to both a volume fraction of hard Cr carbides (a ceramic phase) and a hard, corrosion resistant ferrous matrix. These alloys present, however, poor fracture toughness. This thesis proposes that stainless steel matrix composites re

Recycling play a key role on saving of natural resources and on reducing pollution. The recycling of aluminium alloys is also cost-effective, since it reduce the material cost and creates a considerable energy-saving. The use of recycled Al alloys (usually called secondary) has improved in recent years also because of their comparable mechanical properties with primary aluminium alloys. During the production of secondary aluminium alloys, the scrap are mixed regardless of their specific chemical composition, and then master alloys or pure elements are added to the molten metal.
