Abstract:
The use of the distributed file system, AFS, as a solution to the “input/output sandbox” problem in grid computing is studied. A computational grid middleware, primarily to accommodate the environment of the BaBar Computing Model, has been designed, written and is presented. A summary of the existing grid middleware and resources is discussed. A number of benchmarks (one written for this thesis) are used to test the performance of the AFS over the wide area network and grid environment. The performance of the AFS is also tested using a straightforward BaBar Analysis code on real data. Secure w

Abstract:
The district heating load is seasonally dependent, with a low load during periods of high ambient temperature. Thermal energy storage (TES) has the potential to shift heating loads from winter to summer, thus reducing cost and environmental impact of District Heat production. In this study, a concept of high temperature borehole thermal energy storage (HT-BTES) together with a pellet heating plant for temperature boost, is presented and evaluated by its technical limitations, its ability to supply heat, its function within the district heating system, as well as its environmental impact and ec

No<br>Early warning systems (EWS) for electrical grid infrastructure have played a significant role in the efficient management of electricity supply in natural hazard prone areas. Modern EWS rely on scientific methods to analyze a variety of Earth Observation and ancillary data provided by multiple and heterogeneous data sources for the monitoring of electrical grid infrastructure. Furthermore, through cooperation, EWS for natural hazards contribute to monitoring by reporting hazard events that are associated with a particular electrical grid network. Additionally, sophisticated domain knowle

Abstract:
This thesis compares the performance of Probability Density Estimation and Neural Networks as applied to the identification of tau leptons and electrons at the DO detector for Run II. The theory behind each method of multivariate analysis is briefly described. The efficiencies of each of the methods are compared from analysis of Monte Carlo data samples, and optimal choices for the discrimination between signal and background are made.

Abstract:
A search for dark matter particles in the events containing large missing transverse energy accompanied by b-quarks has been performed. The data collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at the Large Hadron Collider in the years 2016, 2017 and 2018 in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s=13 TeV, which correspond to 138fb−1 integrated luminosity has been analyzed in the present study. For the analysis, two signal categories have been defined to account for the effects of detector acceptance and b-tagging identification. To model the background four control regions h
