Despite several family planning interventions, there has been little improvement in contraceptive use in Nigeria where fertility rates have remained high for the last few decades. Using a mixed-methods approach, this thesis aims to understand the pertinent factors underlying the resistance to fertility decline in the country, with a focus on social and cultural barriers to family planning. The analyses are based on quantitative data drawn from the 2013 Nigerian Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) and qualitative data collected from a semi-urban residential area in Ekiti State. There is now considerable evidence that humans are cooperative breeders – that is, women need allomaternal support to successfully reproduce. Families play a key role in providing this support to women. Evidence from low-income contexts linking allomaternal support to beneficial child outcomes is particularly strong, but associations between support and successful reproduction are more varied in high-income settings and when fertility is the outcome. A successful business needs to generate enough cash to cover expenses, current debt, and family living expenses, pay interest on owned and borrowed capital, maintain productivity, and earn a reasonable return for the operator. Income from sheep production is generally only part of a total farm and nonfarm income. Thus options, opportunity costs, and decisions regarding the sheep production enterprise are not isolated; they affect other agricultural enterprises. AbstractDuring the pre-transition phase from 1950 to 1970, the rapid population growth caused by high and stable fertility throughout the less developed world generated considerable concern and some controversy. Existing demographic theory could offer little evidence-based advice on fertility policy. When US based experts and advocates started a global population control movement, controversy developed over its origin, priorities and feasibility. During the transition’s rapid decline phase, from 1970 to 2000, several new controversies developed even as the pace of fertility decline increased:
