Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) Dyneema® SK-76 fibers are widely used in personnel protection systems. Transverse ballistic impact onto these fibers results in complex multiaxial deformation modes such as axial tension, axial compression, transverse compression, and transverse shear. Previous experimental studies on single fibers have shown a degradation of tensile failure strain due to the presence of such multi-axial deformation modes. In this work, we study the presence and effects of such multi-axial stress-states on Dyneema® SK-76 yarns via transverse loading experiments

AbstractThis study examines the high‐strain rate behavior of shear thickening fluid (STF)‐encapsulated samples of an electrospun mat. It comprises sandwich layers of STF‐impregnated ultra‐high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) mat enclosed within high‐temperature stretched electrospun neat UHMWPE fabric. The UHMWPE/HDPE mat was chosen for STF impregnation due to its porosity and the texture of its fiber surface, which contains pores, pits, wrinkles, and grooves ranging in size from nano‐ to micron‐scale. Soft and lightweight personal protective equipment for civil or military use that is made of cut-resistant textiles is usually rigid and heavy, less elastic or flexible. Insertion of elastane fiber during the fabrication of rigid textiles seems to be working, but actually is not. Therefore, it presents a severe challenge in achieving an appropriate balance among elasticity, flexibility, and protection. To address this issue, an elastic cut-resistant composite yarn is fabricated by single wrapping ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene around elastic Spandex. The effects of wrapping parameter

With the development of lightweight engineering, load-bearing structures such as synthetic fiber ropes are being increasingly used in engineering projects. During the process of repeated stretching or bending, abrasion occurs between the yarns of fiber assemblies like ropes. Fatigue failure caused by abrasion between yarns is one of the main reasons for the failure of such fiber assemblies. Different chain segments of fiber assemblies exhibit different properties. Twelve distinct varieties of hybrid yarns with a core and two continuous filament sheaths were spun in this instance. The effects of thermal aging on their surface morphology and mechanical properties are studied and compared initially. The results demonstrate that UVFDY is a kind of a heat‐resistant fiber.
