Abstract:
Abstract This article pursues the elements of architectural Modernism in James Graham Ballard’s 1975 novel High-Rise (1975). The enormous tower block represents a triumph of technological and constructional progress envisioned by the pioneers of modernist architecture. However, Ballard’s vision of social development within it is regressive and violent. In order to decipher the nature of the role, or lack thereof, of the tower block in the reformulation of its own social fabric, the paper studies the ways in which the narrative presents aspects analogous to the key elements of architectural modernism. Particular attention is paid to the narrative’s reflections of radical and often contradictory visions of key figures of theoretical roots of modernism, such as Le Corbusier and Karel Teige. Their ambiguous stance on the core of modernism not only determines the outcome of the social experiment performed by Ballard in High-Rise, but can also be seen as deforming the building practice until today.

Abstract:
Abstract High-rise buildings in big cities are crucial for business, economic, educational, residential, and entertainment activities in recent times. The technology discoveries in various fields that support high-rise building construction such as structure, mechanical, electrical, and materials have opened up opportunities for comfortable and environmentally safe architectural work. The first milestone of high-rise building construction knowledge in Indonesia was the completion of the thirteen-floors Sarinah retail building in 1967. Indonesia, especially in Jakarta, then experienced rapid growth of high-rise buildings construction. However, there is limited research on the development of high-rise building designs in Indonesia, especially from an architectural design perspective. It leads to the lack of literature on high-rise building design in Indonesia. By utilizing a publicly accessible database from the Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat and recent literature called Designing Tall Building by Mark Sarkisian, this paper explores the design development of high-rise buildings in Jakarta from time to time in the aspects of architecture, structure and sustainability.

The article deals with the use of renewable energy sources in construction in general and in high-rise unique buildings. Such approach will allow to design and construct buildings in which integrated renewable energy sources can be perfectly applied to all aspects of construction. The historical development of architecture and ecology as a single phenomenon is considered. This is particularly relevant to high-rise buildings. With the implementation of energy-efficient technologies, the main drawback - high-energy consumption - will be cut off. The article raises the question of the need to merge these two concepts. Examples of buildings with applied renewable energy sources, both constructed and projected, are considered. Non-traditional energy sources such as wind, solar, land, water and biomass are analyzed. The relevance of their application in construction and influence on all aspects of the project is proved: town-planning, functional, space planning, architectural and artistic, constructive and engineering.

ABSTRACT The University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), campus as it stands today appears as an architectural mash-up of midcentury modern institutional buildings, both low rise and high rise; a smattering of World War II–era wooden buildings; 1970s-style double wide trailers; and new science buildings built by a who's who of internationally famous architects. In this case study, the author shows how the UCSB campus's architectural history mirrors the post–World War II boom in educational facilities throughout California and the social, cultural, and architectural history of the region as a whole. The key to discovering this history is archival research, both at the University Archives at the UCSB Library, as well as at the architecture-specific Architecture and Design Collection at the Art, Design & Architecture Museum on campus. In this case study, the author explains how the architectural history can be traced through the archival records to more fully understand the history of the campus.

As awareness about Human Centric Lighting rises sustainable lighting concepts in high-rise architecture are more and more considered. Health and wellbeing are terms that become an essential part in light planning. The question is if there are sustainable solutions to improve this problem and if so how to implement them in the lighting planning of a modern high-rise building properly? And is there potential for improvement in sustainability of lighting solutions when it comes to working or living conditions? Two main sources of light are looked at: Daylight and artificial lighting. In the case of a modern high-rise building the lighting design necessarily consists of them both. However, the conclusions of the researches looked at in this paper show that it is of utmost importance of how this technology is applied. My findings show that melanopic effective lighting has the power to coordinate our circadian rhythms. Lighting solutions for daytime can positively influence our circadian rhythm by the consideration of natural light in project planning as well as the use of intelligent artificial lighting solutions such as the ones done research on. Abstract:
Abstract: Metaphor is a concept in the field of architecture which is starting to be widely applied in architectural buildings today. Metaphor in architecture can be defined as a figure or expression of a form in the form of a building that can give an impression to people who observe and use it. The concept of metaphorical architecture is divided into three types, namely; 1) Intangible Metaphor, 2) Tangible Metaphor, 3) Combined Metaphor. The concept of metaphorical architecture has been widely applied to several high-rise buildings in the world, but the clarity of the characteristics and application of the concept of metaphorical architecture in high-rise buildings is still unclear. The purpose of this study is to study and understand the characteristics of metaphorical architectural concepts and their application to high-rise buildings. The qualitative descriptive method is used to analyze the case study object. Based on the analysis and discussion of case study objects, it can be concluded that the application of the metaphorical architectural concept in high-rise buildings can be applied to parts of the building, such as crowns of buildings, towers or building bodies, podiums, shape patterns of building masses, building facades and also building materials , which is adapted to the type of architectural metaphor that will be applied. Of the three case study objects examined, each has a different type of metaphor, namely; 1) Menara Wisma BNI 46, Jakarta; Tangible Metaphor, 2) Bank of China Tower; Combined Metaphor, 3) Beekman Tower, New York; Tangible Metaphor. Keywords: Architecture; Metaphor; High-rise Buildings. The article presents the theoretical and methodological foundations of teaching a special course for students - architects on the application of geometric methods of shell formation in the design of modern high-rise buildings. The basic researches and publications which make a theoretical basis of teaching of a special course for architects with application of geometrical methods of formation of covers at designing of architecturally - constructive decisions of buildings are analyzed. The relevance of the use of curvilinear shapes in modern high-altitude architecture is substantiated, which is associated with the development of energy-efficient and bioclimatic design in high-rise buildings solved with extensive use of curvilinear surfaces. Directions for modeling changes in the formation of surfaces of high-rise buildings are identified. Methods of shaping are considered, which are based on geometric modeling of sets of lines, for given design conditions and obtaining by selecting from these sets the corresponding surfaces. An example of their application in the development of architectural - constructive solution of the high - rise complex is presented. As the experience of teaching has shown, the application of methods of geometric modeling in the development of architectural and structural solutions of buildings, develops in students new skills and design capabilities of architectural design. And the development of research on geometric modeling of surfaces, provides broad prospects for the modernization of the discipline in the future, as well as for the introduction of new areas of educational design.

Abstract:
High-rise buildings usually have more complex architectural structures and hold more people than single-storey buildings. Currently, crowd management under emergent conditions, especially rapid evacuations of high-rise buildings, is a worldwide problem. In this study, a bio-inspired simulation technology extracted from a cell migration process, namely Intelligent Decision System (IDPS), was used to model the dynamic evacuation of high-rise buildings and calculate the evacuation time for different scenarios. This work was motivated by the comparability between the pedestrian movement behavior and cell migration process. Specific structure information of high architecture was also described in IDPS. A case study was done about evacuation simulation of a 12-storey teaching building in China University of Geosciences in Beijing. The simulation results showed that evacuation time varied with different parameters, such as density threshold, interaction probability, walking speed, population distribution, and stair width. With the proper density threshold and good interaction probability, the load balance of staircases and exits can be improved. For staircases with high utilization ratios, it was recommended that the evacuation process can be accelerated by widening the staircases appropriately. Finally, the impact of initial number of evacuees at each floor level was also analyzed in view of safety management.

Abstract:
The paper discusses the growing role of IT support for the operation of modern high-rise buildings, due to the complexity of managing engineering systems of buildings and the requirements of consumers for the IT infrastructure. The existing regulatory framework for the development of design documentation for construction, including high-rise buildings, is analyzed, and the lack of coherence in the development of this documentation with the requirements for the creation of an automated management system and the corresponding IT infrastructure is stated. The lack of integration between these areas is the cause of delays and inefficiencies both at the design stage and at the stage of putting the building into operation. The paper proposes an approach to coordinate the requirements of the IT infrastructure of high-rise buildings and design documentation for construction. The solution to this problem is possible within the framework of the enterprise architecture concept by coordinating the requirements of the IT and technological layers at the design stage of the construction.

Abstract:
Abstract - Temples are one of the most important cultural archeological remains available in Indonesia. Over the centuries and indeed up to the present, the various elements in the design of temples have been considered as a reference point and the origin of architecture in Indonesia. The Prambanan temple constitutes the first highrise building in South East Asia, which serves to prove that in that particular era, the ancestors of the current Indonesian population were able to inspire the world with its creations. The temples spread all over Indonesia can be labelled unique because they differed from those hailing from the source of inspiration, namely the country of India. This was due to the active role played by the local genius at that point in time, which showed a knack for absorbing foreign concepts while simultaneously selecting and adapting these ideas to the Indonesian context. In keeping with the developments typical of the era and the available technology, exploring the cultural wealth of resources and architecture must be continued as a matter of course; if not, there is cause for alarm that the local values and the very identity of Indonesian architecture may well fade, and all the more so in the reformation era typified by the increasingly dominant current of globalization. The most rapid development can be found in Jakarta as Indonesia’s capital and the melting pot of all aspects. The density of this urban population goes up all the time, and the price of the increasingly rare land available has followed suit. This particular trend has driven the vertical expansion for reasons of efficient land use and economic factors. The expansion level of high-rise buildings in Jakarta has also risen sharply due to the increasing need. These high-rise buildings can be considered as a symbol of a strong economy of a given city because they define the urban skyline and form a source of pride for the city dwellers. Allowing this expansion of high-rise buildings without making a rigorous selection has frequently led to the urban skyline’s loss of character, and a regrettable tendency to look identical to the skyline of other cities. The purpose of this research project is to study the use of temple representation in the architecture of high-rise buildings of the Reformation Era in Jakarta by way of examining the architectural works of PT Arkonin & PT Airmas Asri. Abstract:
Abstract In dense mega cities, high-rise buildings huge energy consumption on mechanical ventilation and overheat produced by the air conditioners are among big challenges for the sustainable building development and green city construction. Solar chimney is proved to be an efficient method to promote natural ventilation for buildings. Different types of solar chimney are presented with a high-rise building layout example. Solar chimney geometry and environment basic data is suggested to be evaluated to optimize the Solar chimney’s natural ventilation. In addition, aiming as well a clean and sustainable environment, bio-energy can be adopted in buildings by integrating with algae-fluid window and wall system. Different materials of radiation absorber can be studied and integrated with solar chimney. An outline of research on solar chimney integrated with bio-energy for high-rise building is given in this paper. In order to succeed, close multidisciplinary cooperation is necessary for the project which involves at least architecture, thermal physics, air dynamics, materials science and biology. Experiment conditions and potential risk should be discussed beforehand.

Abstract:
Transfer Matrix Method was used to calculate the frequent earthquake responses of high-rise building with different facade shapes. At the premise of constant lateral rigid and same bottom storey mass and supposing that the facade shape variability is simulated by the change of storey mass, the relationship between the maximum value of seismic response and the structure total mass were obtained. Results show that up concave shapes are more optimal than down concaves, pyramid and homogeneous shape as long as the structure deformation being within a reasonable range. If the building height is the most seeking aspect of the design, an up concave shape should be adopted and the building bottom size can be amplified according to the required architecture scale. On the other hand, up concave shapes can’t adapt to a rather wide range of total mass. If the construction field is limited and the architecture scale must meet the requirement, the homogeneous shape should be adopted.
