Abstract:
Understanding the mechanism of zeolite nucleation and crystallization will enable the zeolite science community to tune zeolite properties during synthesis in order to accommodate the purposes of various applications. Thus there has been considerable research effort in "deciphering" the mechanism by studying the growth course of tetrapropylammonium (TPA)-mediated silicalite-1 using several techniques, such as dynamic light scattering (DLS), small-angle X-ray/neutron scattering (SAXS/SANS), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). While these studies have generated a more comprehensive picture on

Abstract:
Young, David. "Hydrothermal stability of high silica zeolites." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/9864.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis concerns the hydrothermal stability of two zeolite molecular sieves with the MFI structure, ZSM-5 and its 'aluminium free' form silicalite. Silicalite was synthesised from low pH alkali metal free aqueous gels at 95°C and characterised by XRD, SEM, DTA and TG. ZSM-5 was crystallised from similar reaction mixtures but with the addition of aluminium salts. It was found that the incorporation of aluminium into the ZSM-5 framework was favoured by higher reaction temperatures (l50°C) and the use of aluminium nitrate. Solubilities were measured for silicalite, ZSM-5, ZSM-11, ZSM-39, ZSM-

A systematic series of high-silica fluoride MFI zeolites were efficiently synthesised using a variety of shape and size structure directing agents. The effects of these structure directing agents on the zeolite synthesised have been studied by the complementary use of X-ray diffraction and solid state NMR. These 14N, 13C and 29Si NMR experiments yield information about the orientation of the structure directing agent within zeolite pores. They also identify covalently bonded fluoride in the form of pentacoordinated silicon whereby the first case of static and dynamic ordering of fluoride in th

Autoclaved aerated concrete is a used building material, especially for its thermal insulating properties. During autoclaving, an aerated concrete microstructure produces crystalline CSH phases, primarily tobermorite. The ingoing substances are calcium oxide and silica. In addition to commonly used raw materials, secondary raw materials rich in silicon dioxide can be used for production. The use of secondary raw materials gives the opportunity for the construction industry to be more environmentally friendly. Another benefit is the reduction of financial costs. Abstract:
Zeolite nucleation and growth is a complex problem that has been widely investigated but still not completely understood. However, a full understanding of this process is required in order to develop predictive models for the rational design and control of the zeolite properties. The primary objective of this dissertation is to determine the strength of organicinorganic interactions (i.e., the adsorption Gibbs energy) in transparent synthesis mixtures using PFG NMR spectroscopy, in order to provide more information for a better understanding of zeolite nucleation and growth. The synthesis and characterization of high-silica molecular sieves is reviewed using molecular recognition phenomena and structure-direction as the unifying themes. A comparative analysis between the synthesis conditions employed and the zeolite structures formed is carried out starting with the synthesis of clathradils or 0-dimensional zeolites, and extending to one-dimensional, multi-dimensional zeosils. The review finishes with the analysis of the combined effects of heteroatoms (Al, B and Zn) and organic structure-directing agents in zeolite product selectivity and thermodynamic stabilit
