AbstractGovernance of health and genomic data access in the context of biobanking is of salient importance in implementing the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Various components of data access governance could be considered as ‘organizational measures’ which are stressed in the Article 89(1) GDPR together with technical measures that should be used in order to safeguard rights of the data subjects when processing data under research exemption rules. In this chapter, we address the core elements regarding governance of biobanks in the view of GDPR, including conditions for processing personal data, data access models, oversight bodies and data access agreements. We conclude by highlighting the importance of guidelines and policy documents in helping the biobanks in improving the data access governance. In addition, we stress that it is important to ensure the existing and emerging oversight bodies are equipped with adequate expertise regarding using and sharing health and genomic data and are aware of the associated informational risks.

The chapter deals with the description of a virtual prototyping platform that facilitates the design process of the mechanical and mechatronic systems. The virtual prototyping stages are defined and then integrated in a block diagram, highlighting how the data are transferred between these stages in order to finally obtain a valid and optimal virtual model, close (as structure and functionality) to the real one. The whole process is guided by the basic principle for successful virtual prototyping: as complicated as necessary and as simple as possible. The real modeling case, the specific simplifying assumptions, and the validity (viability) fields of the simplifying assumptions are discussed with reference to the main components of a mechanical or mechatronic system (bodies, connections between bodies, actuating elements). The purpose is to manipulate the simplifying assumptions in a way that reduces the complexity of the virtual model, but without altering the accuracy of the results. The basic types of analysis/simulation are depicted by considering their particularities, highlighting their role in the process of designing mechanical/mechatronic systems, and then the optimization is conducted by the use of parametric design tools. Finally, a case study is developed following those mentioned above.

This chapter explores what it means for a nurse to advocate for a patient with serious illness. Six integrated components constitute a conceptual model of palliative nursing advocacy. A case study is used to illustrate seven functional elements embedded in the model. The focus is on relational care that empowers patients and their loved ones, highlighting advocacy as an approach to care rather than a set of tasks discrete from, or in addition to, good nursing care. Palliative nursing advocacy fully engages the bio-psycho-socio-spiritual orientation that is the hallmark of nursing education and practice. This enables nurse advocates to use a full spectrum of skills and knowledge to partner with patients, families, and care team members, identifying common ground and building upon areas of agreement to deliver care driven by patient values and preferences. The study in this chapter presents training by highly ontology-oriented tutoring host (THOTH), a cognitive assistant applied to students of higher education. It was developed to provide a reinforcement of contents, aiming to reach a high level of interactivity between users and interfaces. THOTH is based on the theoretical assumption that knowledge is organized in the form of ontologies constructed in the ORAV model in regard to the Ausubel's meaningful learning. THOTH processes the required objects of the ontology in order to facilitate the formulation of standard questions based on the attributes. After one session, students gave its perceptions in a Likert-scale questionnaire with 13 questions. A principal component analysis was performed with 35 questionnaires revealing eight different categories of grouped questions, ranging from the degree of functionality in the learning process to featuring how users were accepting the conversations. The evaluation of the categories is explained quantitatively, highlighting relationships between the elements of each category of study.
