Abstract:
The Hihi Notiomystis cincta, a New Zealand honeyeater (Aves: Meliphagidae), became extinct everywhere except one offshore island following European colonization, Attempts to establish Hihi on additional islands in the 1980s had poor success, and this was attributed to food limitation. These islands had all been modified by human use, and had a lower diversity of natural carbohydrate (fruit and nectar) sources than the source island, particularly in winter. When Hihi were released on two additional islands, Mokoia and Tiritiri Matangi, we used supplementation experiments to test whether condition and survival of birds were limited by availability of carbohydrate food. Sugar water was provided on an on-off basis from autumn through spring in the year after the release. Birds were weighed at the beginning and end of fed periods, and survival for fed and unfed periods was estimated using mark-recapture analysis on sighting data. Armstrong and Perrott (2000) reported that supplementary feeding had no effect on condition or survival on Mokoia, and annual survival was about 40%, both in the year of the experiment and in subsequent years when food was supplied continuously. This paper reports contrasting results for Tiritiri Matangi. Supplementary feeding on Tiritiri Matangi increased both condition and survival, and overall survival was substantially higher than on Mokoia - 66% in the year of the experiment and 76% the following year when food was supplied continuously. It therefore appears that supplementary feeding can be used to improve survival of Hihi on Tiritiri Matangi, whereas survival is constrained to a low level by other factors on Mokoia. These results emphasize the value of habitat manipulation experiments for developing appropriate management strategies for reintroduced populations.

Abstract:
There is growing recognition that variation in animal personality traits can influence survival and reproduction rates, and consequently may be important for wildlife population dynamics. Despite this, the integration of personality research into conservation has remained uncommon. Alongside the establishment of personality as an important source of individual variation has come an increasing interest in factors affecting the development of personality. Recent work indicates the early environment, including natal nutrition, may play a stronger role in the development of personality than previously thought. In this study, we investigated the importance of three personality metrics (activity, boldness and acclimation time) for estimating survival of a threatened species, the hihi ( Notiomystis cincta ), and evaluated the influence of early natal nutrition on those metrics. Our results showed that boldness (as measured from a one-off cage test) had a positive effect on the probability of juvenile hihi surviving to adulthood. There was also a tendency for juveniles that received carotenoid supplementation in the nest to be bolder than those that did not, suggesting that the early environment had some influence on the expression of boldness in juvenile hihi. Linking the development of personality traits with ultimate effects on vital rates may benefit conservation management, as it could enable developmentally targeted management interventions. To our knowledge, this study is the first to identify potential linkages between early natal nutrition, personality and fitness in a wild-living population. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Linking behaviour to dynamics of populations and communities: application of novel approaches in behavioural ecology to conservation’.

Abstract:
This study is about language use in text messaging. In this study there are 338 text messages: 206 of them written by girls and 132 written by boys. The informants in the study are 16 years old and they live in the countryside on the outskirts of a small town in southern Sweden. The purpose of this study was to investigate characteristic linguistic features in the messages, in order to determine what significant meaning an emoticon such as a smiley brings to a text and further, to explore what speech acts smileys occur in. The results show that the language in the messages is a mix of spoken and written language. The characteristic features that were found in the messages were short sentences, onomatopoetic expressions, words written in capital letters, English expressions and use of smileys. Most of the speech acts in the messages were expressions of feelings or attitude. In the investigated corpus, 181 emoticons were found, scrutinized and placed into categories, which show various kinds of implicit information. The girls have used 97 emoticons and the boys 84. The most common emoticon was ,  which appeared 66 times in the messages and mostly served the purpose of making the message nice and friendly and sometimes to alleviate a direction. The reason for using emoticons in text messages was to bring life to it by expressing feelings, without an emoticon the true emotion of the message can easily be misunderstood.

Abstract:
Nutrition is profoundly important for practically all aspects of life. Getting enough of the right kind of food affects cellular function and energy acquisition, disease avoidance, mate attraction, trophic interactions and hence ecosystem structure. When nutritional needs are inadequately met, fecundity and survival can be adversely affected. However, the severity of these effects, and the importance of the particular life history stage when they were experienced, is incompletely understood. Understanding how and when nutritional conditions affect fitness is particularly important for the conservation of endangered species, especially when food supplementation is a key part of managing the few populations that remain. In this thesis, I explore the importance of nutrition during early- and adult-life for the hihi (Notiomystis cincta), a colourful, sexually dichromatic endangered New Zealand passerine. I begin by investigating the importance of nestling nutritional environment for the expression of colourful plumage in adulthood. By experimentally supplementing nestlings with alternative dietary treatments, I demonstrate that early life nutritional conditions have long-term consequences for the expression of both carotenoid-based and structurally produced plumage features. Next I investigate whether these colourful plumage traits are sexually selected. I show that different components of a male’s colourful plumage, including yellow carotenoid-based, black melanin-based and white structurally-based colour, are relevant for different aspects of reproductive success. Using the dietary supplementation experiment, I also consider the impact of alternative supplementary foods on the growth and subsequent survival of hihi. I show that directly supplementing nestlings with protein has a negligible long-term survival benefit over supplementing carbohydrates, and present evidence that males and females have divergent nutritional needs during development – an important consideration for any supplementary feeding program. Finally, I consider whether moulting male hihi selectively forage for carotenoid-rich foods in the wild, as would be expected in a species that requires these pigments for sexual display. I present evidence that adult male hihi do indeed target carotenoid-rich foods during moult, which is consistent with the suggestion that dietary carotenoid access maintains signal honesty. In short, by addressing evolutionary questions from a nutritional perspective, I discover how and when investment in key life history traits is prioritised, how this differs between the sexes and show how this knowledge might be used in supplementary feeding programs to the benefit of endangered species.

Abstract:
In this thesis I have studied hydrodynamical models of cometary HII regions and distributions of UCHII regions in simulated surveys, for comparison with CORNISH. I present the numerical method used to model the evolution of cometary HII regions produced by ZAMS stars of O and B spectral types, which are driving strong winds and are born off-centre from spherically symmetric cores with power-law (alpha = 2) density slopes. A model parameter grid was produced that spans stellar mass, age and core density. Exploring this parameter space I investigated limb-brightening, a feature commonly seen in cometary HII regions. It was found that all of the models produce this feature. The models have a cavity, bounded by a contact discontinuity separating hot shocked wind and ionised ambient gas, that is similar in size to the surrounding HII region. Due to early pressure confinement, shocks outside of the contact discontinuity were not seen, but the cavities were found to continue to grow. The cavity size in each model plateaus as the expansion of the HII region stagnates, which could be due to the Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities at the interface mixing in cooler gas. SEDs of the models are similar to those from identical stars evolving in uniform density fields. The turn-over frequency is lower in the power-law models due to a higher proportion of low density gas covered by the HII regions. Following from this I have simulated CORNISH surveys for stars, varying the local density at the location of stellar birth. I have shown that the models used can reproduce the observed size and flux distributions in the CORNISH survey. Higher density environments generally lead to better fits to the observed size and flux distributions. A good match between the overall number of UCHII regions in the simulated surveys for a SFR = 1.5 solar masses per year can be achieved if it is considered that stars are born in a distribution of local densities rather than a single density.

Abstract:
CloudMe is a cloud computing service used for business and home users. CloudMe facilitates the user to store their personal files like music, video, documents and images. The primary focus of this thesis is on music. The personal music files can be uploaded to CloudMe manually or by using CloudMe sync in any order just like in personal computer. CloudMe offers different services to access the cloud from other devices like smart phones, web browser and the home computer.   Sonos wireless HiFi system is a set of Sonos component interconnected with the mesh network with the primary function to play digital audio. The components include subwoofer, speakers and Bridges in order to connect to wireless speakers. Sonos system is connected to internet through Ethernet or via Wi-Fi. Sonos gives access to music libraries stored in computer, free Internet radio stations and additional music services. The controller for the complete system has various choices as iPhone, Android and other specific Sonos controllers.   However, with Sonos, a computer is considered necessary to be running all the time in order to access the personal music files from the personal computer. Combining CloudMe to Sonos allow the requirement of an always-on computer to be removed. Instead the selected personal music files can be stored with the user‟s private CloudMe account, and the music can be accessed from the cloud storage through the Internet at anytime.   The main objective of this thesis is to build the given APIs from the Sonos that are required in order to access CloudMe from Sonos. Each API handles specific task to present CloudMe through Sonos to the user. For example an API handles user authentication and another API handles the metadata accessing. All the APIs are implemented in the given server from CloudMe. This integration not only provides access roughly the way the music files are stored in the cloud, but also implemented in a way to accesses via categories like artist, albums, genre, composers and also the playlist stored in the cloud. In order to get this menu view of all the music, the metadata of the entire music library from CloudMe is accessed and programmed to differentiate music options in the menu.
