Abstract:
The effect of ripping, mounding and fertiliser application on growth of E. globulus spp. globulus (Tasmanian blue gum) was assessed on 2 sites on the basaltic plains in south-western Victoria. The sites were gravelly loam duplex soils on a well-drained hillcrest and a clay–loam duplex soil on a valley flat that has impeded drainage in winter. The ground preparation treatments comprised a control (herbicide only), ripping to 65 cm, ripping plus small mounds (20 by 40 cm) and ripping plus large mound (60 by 150 cm). The fertiliser treatments were nil, 125, 250 and 500 g of fertiliser (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur) applied per tree 2 months after planting. The basal phosphorus, sulfur and potassium content of topsoil was 8–11, 11–14 and 140–220 mg/kg, respectively, for both sites. Rainfall in 1996, 1997 and 1998 was 695, 497 and 697 mm, respectively. This paper reports growth of 2 seedlots of blue gums (Yeodene Seed Orchard and Otway Ranges, Lorne) at 10 and 23 months after planting in Sep.–Oct. 1996 at 4 by 2 m spacing. The mean height of trees on the hillcrest site was 1.5 and 4.2 m at these times, respectively. For the valley flat, the mean heights were 0.9 and 3.0 m, respectively. On the hillcrest, ripping significantly increased tree height in the first year, but after 23 months neither height nor stem volume was greater than on unripped lines. Use of small mounds did not affect growth of trees at this site, whereas large mounds increased growth. At 10 months, tree height was greater (P<0.05) on the ripped plus large mounds than on the ripped only treatment, but this effect was lost at 23 months. Stem volume was 15% greater than on the ripped only treatment at 23 months, and 22% greater than the control. Trees from the Otway Ranges seedlot were taller and had 17% greater stem volume than trees from the Yeodene Seed Orchard seedlot at 23 months. For the valley flat, there were significant seedling source × site preparation interactions for height at 10 and 23 months (P<0.05), and for stem diameter and volume at 23 months (P<0.01), with the Otway seedlot performing better on the large mounds. There were no effects of fertiliser application on height, diameter or stem volume at 23 months on either site. The results indicate that planting on large mounds can improve early tree growth on farmland sites on the basaltic plains, but ripping without mounding, or fertiliser application in the first 2 years, is unlikely to improve performance.

Ryan, PJ. "Boron retention within a catena of rhyolitic soils and Its effect on radiata pine growth and nutrition." Soil Research 27, no. 1 (1989): 135. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/sr9890135.

Full text
Abstract:
Boron deficiency in Pinus radiata (D. Don) plantations in N.S.W. has been particularly evident on soils derived from acid igneous parent materials. A slope sequence (catena) of soils on a rhyolitic parent material was selected to study the amount of boron retention and its relationship to soil development. The soils at three positions, a hillcrest, mid-slope and lower slope, were described and various soil chemical and physical properties were determined for each horizon. Tree height, deformity, survival and foliar chemistry of 6 year old P. radiata were measured in plots adjacent to the three soil profiles studied. Boron adsorption isotherms varied within individual soil profiles by horizon and also between the different soil profiles in the catena. Boron adsorption was highest in the hillcrest soil B horizons and lowest in the bleached A2 horizons of the lower slope soil. The Freundlich isotherm constant k was found to be significantly correlated with clay content (r = 0.88), exchangeable aluminium (r = 0.79, exchangeable potassium (r = 0.68), and dithionite-citrate extractable iron (r = 0.66). Leaching and illuviation of iron oxides and clay has been accentuated in the two soil profiles on the hillslope sites of the catena. As clay, aluminium and iron oxides have been removed from the surface horizons of the lower slope soil, the ability of these horizons to adsorb and therefore retain boron has been greatly diminished. Position on the catena also affected P. radiata growth survival and foliar chemistry. Tree height decreased while the incidence of deformity increased down the slope. It is suggested that the progressive deterioration in tree growth down the slope is mainly caused by the trees being increasingly affected by boron stress as a result of decreasing capacity of the soils to retain boron by adsorption against leaching towards the lower slope.

This article examines the history of Chinese religiosities in Saskatoon. Chinese Religion(s), described by Jordan and Li Paper and David Chuenyan Lai as an “unrecognized” religion in Canada, can just as easily be described as “misunderstood.” To better understand the “religion(s)” of Chinese Canadians, this exploratory essay concentrates on the population in Saskatoon from the mid-nineteenth to the early twenty-first centuries with the help of archival materials that range from oral interviews to photographs; headstone inscriptions and offerings at graves in Hillcrest and Woodlawn cemeteries; textual sources including newspapers, provincial statutes, books, and journal articles; and thirteen interviews conducted in 2007. This article is in English.

Abstract:
Abstract Four insecticides were tested for efficacy against Japanese beetle larvae at the Hillcrest Park Cemetery, Springfield, MA. The lawn consisted of 50% Kentucky bluegrass, 20% creeping bentgrass, 20% crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis), and was mowed at ca. 2.0 inches. Treatment plots were 8 ft by 8 ft, replicated 5 times, arranged in aCRB. Applications were made on 27 Aug 1996. Granular products were applied by hand using glass jars with perforated lids. Liquid formulations were applied by hand with a watering can using 4 liters of water per plot. Plots were watered in with 0.15 inch irrigation within one hour after application. Product efficacy was evaluated for all treatments on 18 Oct (52 DAT) by removing 5 cupcutter plugs (4.25 inch diam) from near the center of each plot, dislodging soil and counting all grubs to a depth of 3 inches.

Nkhatau, Nthabiseng Eunice. "Car guarding as a survival and livelihood strategy : a comparative study of the negotiation of working space in Hillcrest and Hatfield." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/65594.

Full text
Abstract:
Car guarding has emerged as one of the informal economic activities that form an integral part of the South African urban landscape. This activity serves as a source of livelihood for many individuals who face limited job opportunities and numerous barriers to entry into the formal economy. Drawing on conceptualisations of space, flexible accumulation and sustainable livelihoods, this research explored the work-life experiences and challenges that Pretoria car guards face in negotiating their working spaces. The generation of livelihoods in relation to the utilisation of public space by car guards was explored. The study outlines the significance of access to public space in the generation of livelihoods for car guards as well as their reasons for doing this type of work. Findings indicate that the primary reason for engaging in car guarding is to earn an income and survive in the midst of unemployment, limited job opportunities and poverty, given the low level of education and skills participants have. The study further revealed that urban public space is a pivotal physical asset through which car guards secure their livelihoods. Nonetheless, the utilisation of urban public space is highly contested and negotiated with an array of different actors such as: those in positions of authority1, the general public and fellow car guards. In negotiating their working spaces, car guards face competition and conflict as major challenges. Social skills and interpersonal relations play a pivotal role when it comes to accessing and entering car guarding. In their work they face an array of challenges ranging from exposure to fluctuating weather conditions, lack of a secure environment to harassment by those in positions of authority. Given their income insecurity, car guards are forced to work long hours and they employ different strategies to negotiate their working space in urban public places. These include aggressively defending their turf against other fellow car guards as well as paying certain amounts through both informal and formal arrangements to those in positions of authority to secure their working space. This as a result renders the urban public space as a commodity with territorial meanings and ownership attached to it.

This research applies the Near Repeat Calculator (NRC) to identify near repeat residential burglary patterns in the Hillcrest (KZN) policing area for the first time. A total of 490 residential burglaries, over a 12-month period, reported to Hillcrest police station were mapped (geocoded) and the near repeat calculations were visualised using the Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The month-to-month near repeat calculations are analysed and suggest that the NRC is a valuable tool that can predict the space-time locations of near repeat residential burglaries in the Hillcrest policing area.
Lolu cwaningo lusebenzisa i-Near Repeat Calculator (NRC) ukuhlonza amaphethini okuphindaphindeka kwezigameko zokugqekezwa kwamakhaya endaweni eyenganyelwe yisiteshi samaphoyisa sase-Hillcrest (KZN). Izigameko zokugqekezwa kwamakhaya ezingama-490 ezabikwa esiteshini samaphoyisa sase- Hillcrest esikhathini esiyizinyanga eziyi-12 zaboniswa emfanekisweni webalazwe lendawo (geocoded) futhi izilinganiso zamathuba okuthi ziphinde zenzeke izigameko zokugqekezwa kwamakhaya zaboniswa ngokuthi kusetshenziswe umfanekiso owenziwe nge-Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Kwahlaziywa amathuba enyanga nenyanga okuphindaphindeka kwezigameko, futhi imiphumela eyatholakala kulokhu iyabonisa ukuthi i-NRC iyithuluzi eliwusizo impela elingabikezela izindawo nesikhathi lapho kungaphinda futhi kwenzeke khona izigameko zokugqekezwa kwamakhaya endaweni eyenganyelwe yisiteshi samaphoyisa sase-Hillcrest.
Olu phando lusebenzisa uhlobo lokubala olwaziwa ngokuba yiNear Repeat Calculator (NRC) ngenjongo yokubona isimbo sokuqhekezwa kwezindlu zabantu kummandla ophantsi kwamapolisa aseHillcrest (eKZN). Kuqwalaselwe ama-490 eziganeko zoqhekezo lwemizi ezaxelwa emapoliseni aseHillcrest kwisithuba seenyanga ezili-12, kwaye uhlobo lokubala oluqikelela ukuphindwa kweziganeko zoqhekezo luboniswe ngokusebenzisa inkqubo ekuthiwa yiGeographic Information Systems (GIS). Ubalo oluqikelela ukuphindwa kweziganeko luphononongiwe kwinyanga nenyanga, kwaye iziphumo zibonisa ukuba iNRC sisixhobo esinexabiso, esinokukwazi ukuqikelela indawo nexesha apho kunokuphinda kuqhekezwe khona kummandla ophantsi kwamapolisa aseHillcrest.
