Soudre, Donoso Michel Gabriel. "Optimización probabilística de portafolios de tecnología convencional e inteligente para el diseño robusto de una subestación primaria de distribución." Tesis, Universidad de Chile, 2016. http://repositorio.uchile.cl/handle/2250/141021.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Chaos Hill is a collection of short stories that represents the duality and paradox of existence in the lives of characters searching for a better place. The stories display man's connection to the physical world and his attempts to free himself from its cycles. The action of each story occurs within twenty-four hours and is concentrated on small changes and motion as resolution. In Chaos Hill, the world spins gravity into oppression, day and night roll relentlessly on, and only when dreams of escape die is the battle won.

Abstract:
An urban community is a fusion of new and old that is constantly changing. We understand better the plight of a community through raising awareness of its unique history and visual character. Linking individual and community experiences offers an opportunity for dialogue, especially as long-time residents and their new neighbors learn about their different pasts and explore their common future. Community building happens from within, when many individuals sharing common values create positive change.

Stoughton-Jackson, Courtney. "Maintaining a hill prairie ecosystem." Virtual Press, 1997. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1061874.

Full text
Abstract:
Fire has been an important influence on the structure and health of the North American grasslands for hundreds of years. In Jersey County Illinois, two natural loess hill prairies were studied to compare the effectiveness of varying management regimes. The purpose was to determine how a burn vs. a nonburn management regime enhances or hinders the establishment of the prairie grasses and forbs in a tallgrass hill prairie ecosystem. The variables studied included: the vegetational abundance, the frequency, and the biomass of the species that were present. In addition the soil's organic matter content and pH were measured. Overall, the Fire Road Prairie, or the unburned prairie, proved to be the community that was deteriorating and becoming unproductive. Whereas, the Osage Prairie contained a balance of grasses and forbs that were representative of a healthy and thriving community. The data supported the existing theory that a burn management plan does help the overall stability and productivity of a tallgrass ecosystem.

Hambrick, Scott Randolph. "A house on a hill." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/54026.

Full text
Abstract:
The design of the house began with a response to topography. The placing of the house at the bend of a hillside prompted a rotation of axis in the plan. As a result, the thesis becomes about the architectural implications of this rotation. Through formal studies in plan, what was originally conceived as a rotation of axis developed into a rotation of volumes. The interaction and transition between the two volumes becomes critical in mediating the rotation. The rotation can be signified by a change of material, or a change of volume, making it a point of emphasis and a part of the architecture. Materiality is important to the transition between volumes, as well as to the composition and expression of the elevations. The composition of a material in elevation can serve as an indicator of the quality and function of the interior spaces and its relation to the exterior spaces. New solutions to particular problems, such as the bridge element between the two parts of the house, are found through exploring and ultimately deciding upon the best architectural resolution. The means for exploring in architecture are drawing and building.

Gouws, Cliff. "Magazine Hill : a weathered continuum." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/29983.

Full text
Abstract:
NDLTD Innovative ETD Award 2012. This dissertation is rooted within a process of unification, a personal struggle to understand the fragile relationship that exists between architecture and time. The project focuses on architecture’s potential to adapt according to the passage of time, through the process of aging and weathering. This study is founded in the aim to re-establish a connection between the continuum of time and architecture. The project places contemporary commemorative architecture under the limelight, criticising the static notion of heritage commemoration through the typologies of museums and memorials. These typologies often evolve into static monuments, where the relevance to contemporary society can be questioned. The architectural response of this dissertation is thus focused on commemoration through everyday use. The proposed historical site (Magazine Hill) forms a comprehensive construct of different layers of time and influence. This mysterious, abandoned and isolated site consists of two ammunition magazines, five bomb shelters and ammunition factories, all structures that represent an era of unrest in South Africa. In 1945 a mysterious explosion of the Central Magazine scarred the face of Magazine Hill, leading the activities on the site to an early death, trapping architecture in time and abandonment. The proposed programme forms part of the conceptual premise of mediation, unifying different opposites inherent in both Magazine Hill and the South African context. A brass foundry is proposed to recycle the spent ammunition shells of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), thereby introducing brass artists as a public interface to Magazine Hill. Where ammunition was once produced, ammunition is now reduced. This programme could form mediation between the public and the military; exposing different layers of the past by reinstating a connection between architecture and time. The current research is an invitation to the reader to sail into what has been lived for me, as a researcher, reaching the hip-hop young cultural movement in the Lucia do Livramento Mayvorne´s elementary school, in the Monte Serrat hill in Florianópolis. Through the whole investigative process, I tried to have a look on this young cultural movement and on the adolescents here called: Daisy, Rose, Violet, Clove, Dahlia, jasmine, sunflower, Bromeliad, Lily and Cactus that brought their experiences of this culture giving substance to the Research. I understood that gestures, corporal motion and vestry style came imbued with the black identity, marked by their braid hairs and body swaying. The concept of identity says about the social, cultural, ethnic and gender belonging, which is constructed in family, social and institutional atmospheres, over comparisons and assays in the socio-cultural inter-relations. I have seen in my body and in the pleasure for dance complicity for the research. This research is composed by the discourse of the adolescents, physical education teachers, arts teacher and the school principal, in connection to the body and dance, which are the main object of this research, where I searched for my reflections, having the theoretical-methodological allusion of the cultural researches as support. On the dance and body experience, the adolescents manifested their importance by photographing the choreographies of the hip-hop young cultural movement. Stays for the reading of the complete research, the reflection of this culture on the discourse of black adolescents that were here investigated.

Pestell, Alex. "Geoffrey Hill : poetry, criticism and philosophy." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2012. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/39686/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the role played by philosophy in the poetry and criticism of Geoffrey Hill. Despite countless references to philosophy throughout Hill's critical authorship, there exists no study of any length on this vital aspect of his thought. Through close readings of his poetry, criticism, and archival material, I attempt to demonstrate that philosophy has played a more crucial role in Hill's work than has hitherto been assumed. Hill's sceptical attitude to philosophy is intimately connected with his understanding of poetry as a sensate form of cognition. My thesis examines the ways Hill's poetry and criticism responds to the challenges imposed upon this scepticism by a tradition of philosophy that emphasises the importance of the aesthetic to its analyses of modernity's contradictions. I argue that a tradition of Anglophone Idealist thinkers, from S.T. Coleridge, via T.H. Green and F.H. Bradley, to Gillian Rose, is of sustained relevance to Hill's work, shaping the way he thinks about politics, ethics and literature. In particular, German Idealism's attempts to negotiate universality and particularity via an emphasis on the aesthetic bases of critical thought lay the groundwork for an understanding of poetry as a mode of cognition. Reading Hill's poetry from For the Unfallen to Oraclau/Oracles, I try to show the ways in which problems traditionally conceived of as philosophical can be cognised in prosody and syntax. In part a vindication of Hill's elevation of poetry over philosophy, these readings also show the degree to which Hill's ‘craft of vision' is indebted to conceptual and aesthetic models supplied by philosophy.

Full text
Abstract:
Few post-war Anglophone poets have constructed an intellectual hinterland as rich and problematic as Geoffrey Hill. This thesis examines one crucial strand of his thought: the deeply-implicated, yet uneasy imbrication of poetry and theology, style and faith. In the essay ‘Language, Suffering, and Silence’, Hill proposes ‘a theology of language’, while in the preface to his 2003 collection of essays Style and Faith, he insists that with exemplary writers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, ‘style is faith’. Finally, in ‘Eros in F.H. Bradley and T.S. Eliot’, Hill searchingly touches on the central problem in considering art in relation to faith: ‘the fundamental dilemma of the poetic craft [is] that it is simultaneously an imitation of the divine fiat and an act of enormous human self-will.’ This thesis proposes that such a ‘fundamental dilemma’, while a source of anxiety for Hill’s post-Eliotic poetics, energises and enriches his poetry. I argue that Hill’s ‘theology of language’ is derived from two radically-opposed intellectual traditions: one lineage from the philological diligence of the English Reformation, the other from the apotheosis of style in the post-Romantic poetics of individuals such as Wallace Stevens and W.B. Yeats. I situate Hill’s thoughts on the relationship of poetry to religious faith in terms of his intellectual and aesthetic engagements with literary precursors: John Donne, John Milton, Gerard Manley Hopkins, and W.B. Yeats.

Groves, Dawn. "Geometric variances in hip osteoarthritis and tribology of the natural hip." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2015. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/10415/.

Full text
Abstract:
Osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip joint is a common form of arthritis that often requires surgical intervention using total hip replacement (THR), as treatment using early interventional techniques is still poorly understood. It is hoped that gaining a better understanding of hip geometry, and that using this information in future in-vitro simulations, will contribute to the evidence base regarding the aetiology of OA and the use of early surgical interventions to prevent or delay the onset of hip OA. This thesis aimed to investigate geometric variations in patients with known hip OA and compare them to asymptomatic participants of the same age. The thesis also aimed to develop a novel in-vitro simulation model for the tribological testing of complete natural hip joints. Twenty nine participants were recruited into the study (n=15 control and n=14 hip OA), and the geometry of their hip joints was explored and compared using high resolution (3.0 T) MRI and 3D shape matching software (EndPoint), which in the main, had previously been used for investigating the knee joint. In the study group, obvious shape differences such as superior flattening of the femoral head, differences in the sphericity of the head and acetabulum, and a significantly smaller degree of acetabular anteversion were observed when compared to the asymptomatic group. Experimental work began by validating a new pendulum friction simulator (Mk B) using THR bearings and hemiarthroplasties. One major modification and several minor modifications were required before the simulator could be used to develop the novel complete natural hip joint in-vitro simulation model, which was done successfully using porcine tissue. This model and the novel sample potting methodology developed alongside it can be used in future in-vitro tribological studies of the natural hip joint, and information gained from the MRI study can be used as geometric parameters for future in-vitro simulations.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to characterize metallurgical and tribological events occurring at the articulating surfaces of all metal implants in order to gain understanding of the wear characteristics of Co-Cr-Mo alloys. The surfaces of fifteen implant heads (or balls), made of either cast, low carbon wrought or high carbon wrought Co-Cr-Mo material, were examined using scanning electron and atomic force microscopes. In the fast part of the study, six of the implants were examined prior to simulator testing, three after 3 million cycles of testing at 3 times body weight, and six after 6 million cycles of testing, also at 3 times body weight. In the second part of the study, the six implants that were examined prior to testing in the first part, were progressively wear tested at 5 times body weight and were periodically examined until 2 million cycles of testing. Abstract:
In this dissertation, I examine the articulation of hip-hop in the mid-1980s as it emerged onto the national stage of American popular culture. Using Articulation Theory, I weave together an argument explaining how and why hip-hop went from being articulated as a set of multicultural and inclusive practices, organized around breaking, graffiti, and DJing, to being articulated to a violent, misogynistic, and homophobic hyper-masculine representation of blackness as essentially rap music culture. In doing so I also argue that there are real political, social, racial, cultural, and ideological implications to this shift in articulation; that something is at stake in defining hip-hop as both black and rap music culture. I put forward this argument by making three distinct steps over the course of this dissertation. First, I identify a change in how hip-hop was represented and thus articulated in popular media. Through an intertextual analysis of the hip-hopsploitation genre films I show that early hip-hop was being represented primarily as a set of cultural practices cohering around breaking, graffiti, and DJing rather than the now dominant articulation as rap music culture. Next I set forth one possible reason for this shift within the limiting conditions set by the available media technologies and means of commodification. The visual nature of hip-hop's early articulation coupled with the economic inaccessibility of consumer home video made breaking and graffiti difficult to commodify compared to rapping as an aural element. Using "technological determinist" theorists like McLuhan, Innis, and Kittler, I argue that understanding how hip-hop as been historically constructed requires analyzing the limiting effect that the material conditions of media technologies have on the production of hip-hop. Finally, I offer a second, racial and cultural reason for this shift in articulation, and begin identifying some of the significance of this shift. A key aspect of the articulation of hip-hop as rap music is the further connection to blackness. This connection may function to maintain white patriarchal hegemony by displacing it on the black body via rap music: a complex dynamic of disidentification and appropriation.

Abstract:
This diploma thesis deals with creation of elektromechanical model in Modelica language which is subsequently imported into LabVIEW environment. The Modelica language, LabVIEW graphical programming tool and Functional Mock-up Interface 2.0 standard are described in the introduction of this thesis. Functional Mock-up Interface is a tool independent standard witch, defines a standardized interface to ModelExchange and Co-simulation of complex system components. The model of electromechanical system was created based on Functional Mock-up Interface standard. Part of the work focuses on the Functional Mock-up Unit storage possibilities and LabVIEW support to import models of this type. The imported model was simulated and tested in this environment. Finally, the instance of Functional Mock-up Unit was connected with LabVIEW FPGA target for the purpose of model HIL simulation on CompactRIO platform.
