Abstract:
Hindu religious culture has a rich and long-standing performance tradition containing many genres and regional types that contribute significantly to an understanding of the living vitality of the religion. Because the field of religious studies has focused on texts, the assumption exists that these are primary, and performances based on them are mere enactments and therefore derivative. This thesis will challenge this common assumption by arguing that performances themselves can be constitutive events in which religious worldviews, social histories, and group and personal identities are created or re-negotiated. In this work, I examine the history of performance cultures (understood both as genres and the groups that develop and perform them) in the Telugu-speaking regions of South India from the sixteenth century to the present in order to elucidate the cross-fertilization among various performance spheres over time.
My specific focus is on the figure of Satyabhama (lit. True Woman or Woman of Truth), the favourite wife of the god Kṛṣṇa. Satyabhama represents a range of emotions, which makes her character popular with dramatists and other artists in the Telugu-speaking regions of South India where poets composed hundreds of performance-texts about her, and several caste groups have enacted her character through narrative drama.
The dissertation is composed of four substantive parts - text, context, memory, and mimesis. The first part explores the figure of Satyabhama in the Mahabharata and in three Sanskrit Puraṇic texts. The second examines the courtly traditions of poetry and village performances in the Telugu language, where Satyabhama is innovatively portrayed through aesthetic categories. The third is based on ethnographic work with women of the contemporary kalavantula (devadasi) community and looks at the ways in which they identify with Satyabhama and other female aesthetic archetypes (nayikas). The final section is based on fieldwork with the smarta Brahmin male community in Kuchipudi village, where men continue to perform mimetic representations of Satyabhama through a performative modality known as stri-veṣam ("guise of a woman").

Abstract:
The thesis investigates the cultural interventions of Hindu nationalist, C. Rajagopalachari (CR), by offering a close reading of his re-tellings of the Hindu epics, The Mahabharata (1951) and The Ramayana (1956). It positions them alongside the writings of M. K. Gandhi and the key responses to Katherine Mayo’s controversial text Mother India (1927). The thesis explores the central female protagonists of the epics – Sita and Draupadi – asking how these poetic representations illuminate the ways in which femininity was imagined by an influential Hindu ideologue during the early years of Indian Independence. Using close textual analysis as my principal method I suggest that these popular-literary representations of sexual identities in Hindu culture functioned as one means by which Hindu nationalists ultimately sought to regulate gender roles and modes of being. I focus on texts emerging in the years immediately before and after Independence and Partition. In this period, I suggest, the heroines of these versions of the epic texts are divested of their bodies and of their mythic powers in order to create pliant, de-sexualised female icons for women in the new nation to emulate. Through an examination of the responses to Katherine Mayo’s Mother India (1927), and of Gandhi’s writings, I argue that there one can discern an attempt in the Hindu Indian script to define female sexual identity as maternal, predominantly in service to the nation. These themes, I argue, were later articulated in CR’s recasting of the Hindu epics. CR’s epics represent the vision of gender within Hindu nationalism that highlights female chastity in the epics, elevating female chastity into an authentic and perennial virtue. I argue, however, that these ‘new’ representations in fact mark a re-working of much older traditions that carries forward ideas from the colonial period into the period of Independence. I explore this longer colonial tradition in the Prologue, through a textual analysis of the work of William Jones and James Mill. Thus my focus concerns the symbolic forms of the nation – its mythologies and icons – as brought to life by an emergent Hindu nationalism, suggesting that these symbolic forms offer an insight into the gendering of the independent nation. The epics represented an idealised model of Hindu femininity. I recognise, of course, that these identities are always contested, always unfinished. However I suggest that, through the recasting of the epic heroines, an idea of female sexuality entered into what senior Hindu nationalist and Congressman, K.M. Munshi, called ‘the unconscious of India’.

Abstract:
The 1920s and 1930s were decades of momentous changes and expansion in the Hindi literary sphere In this period Hindi became an established public language in print, education and politics and struggled successfully to become the future national language of India. A market for Hindi literature was first created, journals provided venues for debate and literary expression as well as professional employment, genres and styles were explored in many new directions, and new voices emerged, importantly those of women writers. The nationalist movement, too, entered a new phase which emphasized popular publics and vernacular institutions. Through the concept of 'public sphere' as expounded by Jurgen Habermas and other political scientists, this thesis analyzes those changes at the levels of institutions, actors, discourses and, to a limited extent, of audiences in their proper context and in relation to each other. Chapter 2 explores changes in the literary sphere, both its expansion chiefly through the medium of journals, and its institutionalization through a linguistic and literary agenda in the education system. Chapter 3 analyzes historical debates and narratives in order to trace the consolidation and diffusion of a nationalist historical consciousness. Chapter 4 examines the development of women's journals and the space they provided for a critique of discrimination against women and their public access, and for the exploration of women's roles and emotionality. Chapter 5 focuses on the making of Hindi's claim to be the 'national language', the strategies employed and the exclusions operated in the process of its political affirmation. Chapter 6 explores the relationship between the literary and the political spheres focusing on the role of Hindi intellectuals and political leaders. The institutional authority gained in one sphere underwrote that gained in the other, it shall be argued, and gave credence to an official nationalism that does not reflect the complexity and variety of cultural imagination and literary practices in that period.

Abstract:
A persistent interest in a particular type of Christian witness is found in a substantial amount of Hindi-language Protestant (hereafter, ‘Hindi Christian’) literature in modern India. Across a range of texts like Hindi translations of the Bible, theo-ethical works, hymns, biblical commentaries, and poems, this literature calls attention to a form of Christian witness or discipleship that both is credible and recognizable and is public. This witness aims to be credibly Christian: as I will show, Hindi Christian texts have regularly rejected a Hindu concept like avătār in favor of a neologism like dehădhāran to communicate a Christian notion of incarnation in a predominantly Hindu context. Yet, the variety of polytradition (or, shared) words found in Hindi Christian texts suggests a comfort with loose religious boundaries. The witness aims also to be recognizably Christian. For instance, Hindi Christian texts on theology and ethics persistently reflect on a virtuous Christian life with a view toward perceptions in multifaith contexts. Perceptions of Christians matter to the authors of these texts. The attention to Christian witness in such literature, then, is to a very public form of witness. A reading of the works of three prominent Hindi Christian scholars – Benjamin Khan, Din Dayal, and Richard Howell – will show how a focus on the pluralistic context of Hindi Christian witness has shaped influential texts on ethics, theology, and evangelism in Hindi. This dissertation is a first attempt in the academy of religion to study Hindi Christian texts in modern India. As a result, it seeks to achieve two goals: provide an introduction to Hindi Christian literature, and understand a prominent theme found in such literature. It is by no means an exhaustive study of Hindi Christian literature. Rather, it maps a literary landscape and subjects one trope therein to further examination. Protestant Christian literature in India has generally portrayed the purpose of Christian discipleship in two ways: by describing it as a response to salvific grace and by denying it is works righteousness. Hindi Christian texts shed light on another rationale: to present a credible and recognizable witness in a multifaith public context.

The metaphysical poetry of the English Romantics is characterised by an interest in esoteric wisdom, and the exploration of Hinduism and Neoplatonism during the period formed a significant part of this 'abstruse research'. This thesis will investigate the role of two central strands of 'Romantic esotericism', Neoplatonism and Hinduism, in the work of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Percy Bysshe Shelley, and examine how it is manifested in their poetry, philosophy and expression of visionary experience and spiritual transcendence. This study considers the way in which Coleridge and Shelley drew upon the ideas, symbols, mythology, theology and philosophy contained in the earliest English translations of Hindu sacred texts and Thomas Taylor's Neoplatonic translations, during their poetic explorations of transcendental experience. It will demonstrate how this material was a significant source of inspiration to both Coleridge and Shelley when formulating their own poetic vocabulary capable of expressing the ineffable divine. The first chapter deals with the early influence of Hinduism and Neoplatonism on Coleridge's poetic output from 1793-1802, and the second chapter considers his shifting response from this point onwards, which coincides with his poetic development and the apparent loss of his former visionary insight. His expression of visionary experience in his early work is evidently influenced by both Hindu and Neoplatonic texts and, despite his later criticism, Coleridge continues to make use of their 'symbolic potential' before dismissing them entirely in his later years. Shelley shares Coleridge's preoccupation with the esoteric unknown and the final chapter examines the influence of Hinduism and Taylor's Neoplatonic translations, as well as the symbolic legacy of Coleridge, on Shelley's poetical explorations of visionary pursuit and divine insight. Like Coleridge, Shelley synthesises Neoplatonic and Hindu influences to create his own divine symbolism, and both poets were greatly inspired by their engagement with these ancient traditions.

Abstract:
This project delineates a cultural history of modern Hinduism in conversation with contemporary Indian literature. Its central focus is literary adaptations of the Sanskrit epic the Mahābhārata, in English, Hindi, and Bengali. Among Hindu religious texts, this epic has been most persistently reproduced in literary and popular discourses because its scale matches the grandeur of the Indian national imagining. Further, many epic adaptations explicitly invite devotion to the nation, often emboldening conservative Hindu nationalism. This interdisciplinary project draws its methodology from literary theory, history, gender, and religious studies. Little scholarship has put Indian Anglophone literatures in conversation with other Indian literary traditions. To fill this gap, I chart a history of literary and cultural transactions between both India and Britain and among numerous vernacular, classical, and Anglophone traditions within India. Paying attention to gender, caste, and cultural hegemony, I demostrate how epic adaptations both narrate and contest the contours of the Indian nation.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to examine potential similarities in Hindi1 and Pashto grammar as regards to the arial feature of lexical reduplication, and to give a brief explanation of the phenomenon. It is my belief that this feature appears in both languages and that it functions in a similar way when it comes to: full reduplication, distribution and partial reduplication, so called echo-words. I will try to explain how these features function in Pashto based on the research already done in Hindi and the limited amount of description found in Pashto grammars that discuss this subject. The object of the paper is to prove that reduplication in Pashto takes similar form with similar meaning to the reduplications found in Hindi. To analyse this I will look at literary language in Hindi and Pashto using examples found in books, grammars, papers of other researchers, as well as examples found online in blogs and on newspaper sites. The first section of this paper will deal with full reduplication of nouns, pronouns, adjectives and adverbials, numerals and participles. It will show that various types of semantic meanings can be derived from reduplication such as intensification, attenuation, continuation or distribution. The second section will deal with partial reduplication and it will show that these also appears in the different word categories mentioned (though apparently not in both languages) and it aims to give an explanation as to what forms these partial reduplications can take, that is, how they are constructed, as well as how they may function.

Resumo: O presente trabalho analisa de que maneira as reflexões teórica sobre a criação poética de Novalis, que se materializam nos fragmentos de Pólen, relacionam-se com os poemas que compõem os Hinos à Noite. Procuramos analisar a relação dialética que as duas obras estabelecem que consiste no fato dos fragmentos possuírem características da poesia e de suas ideias estarem presente nos poemas. Analisamos os fragmentos que refletem sobre as teorias românticas acerca da poesia e do poético, compreendendo como se constitui nessa obra o pensamento crítico de Novalis sobre poesia e linguagem, estabelecendo, depois, ligações com os poemas, associando a reflexão crítica presente em Pólen com alguns elementos poéticos marcantes nos Hinos como o misticismo, a ideia de conhecimento, o símbolo, a valorização da Noite, da Morte e do Amor. Compreendemos que as duas obras estabelecem uma conexão de ideias, pois, entendemos os Hinos como uma poesia transcendental, sobre a qual Novalis teorizou em seus fragmentos, além disso, analisamos que os símbolos do Amor e da Morte estão presentes em ambas as obras e são construídos a partir de características em comum. Refletimos ainda que as duas obras se aproximam também no aspecto formal, uma vez que em ambas Novalis faz experimentações formais: em Pólen temos o desenvolvimento do fragmento como gênero, enquanto nos Hinos temos o poema em prosa e em verso. Abstract: The present work studies the way the theoretical reflection about the poetic creation of Novalis, that are present in the fragments of Pollen, have a relation with the poems of the Hymns to the Night. We analyze the dialectics relation that the two works have, which is the fragment having characteristics of poetry and the ideas of the fragments being present in the poems. We analyze the fragments that reflect the romantic theories about poetry and poetic, understanding how the critical thoughts by Novalis about poetry and language are made, establishing, after that, connections with the poems, and linking the critical reflection that's in Pollen with some important poetic elements of the Hymns, as the mysticism, the idea of knowledge, the symbol, the valorization of Night, Death and Love. We recognize that the two works have a connection of ideas, because we understand the Hymns as the transcendental poetry, that Novalis theorized in his fragments. Furthermore, we analyze that the symbols of Love and Death are in both works and made with sharing characteristics. We also reflect that both works have similarities in the formal aspect, once that in both Novalis make formal experimentations: in Pollen we have the development of the fragment as a genre, and in the Hymns the poem in prose and verse. Abstract:
Bakgrund: Patienter med psykisk ohälsa är vanligt förekommande inom den somatiska vården. Tidigare forskning har visat att dessa patienter upplever att sjuksköterskors bemötande och kunskap kring psykisk ohälsa är bristfällig, vilket leder till diskriminering och en olämplig omvårdnad. Syfte: Att identifiera hinder för sjuksköterskors omvårdnad till patienter med psykisk ohälsa inom somatisk vård. Metod: Allmän litteraturöversikt där sju kvalitativa och fem kvantitativa studier ligger som grund för resultatet.   Resultat: Två huvudkategorier framkom med faktorer som hindrar sjuksköterskors omvårdnad till patienter med psykisk ohälsa inom somatisk vård. En huvudkategori är Personliga egenskaper som hinder, där sjuksköterskors begränsade kunskap och negativa attityd ingår. Den andra huvudkategorin är Bristande förutsättningar som hinder, som innefattar brister i vårdmiljö, resurser och organisatoriska förutsättningar. Slutsats: Genom att sjuksköterskor får mer utbildning om psykisk ohälsa och förbättrade förutsättningar skulle diskriminering och negativa attityder mot patienter med psykisk ohälsa kunna reduceras. Med ökad kunskap, positiv attityd, och goda förutsättningar i form av en lämplig vårdmiljö, tillräckliga resurser och tydliga rutiner skulle sjuksköterskors omvårdnad till patienter med psykisk ohälsa kunna förändras till det bättre.

Abstract:
Purpose: To describe the gender impact on the situation of women at the onset of myocardial infarction and describe why women wait to contact medical caregivers when showing symptoms of myocardial infarction. Method: Literature review with a descriptive design. Articles was retrieved from PudMed and Cinahl. Findings: Women are affected more than men of the so-called atypical symptoms of a heart attack. This means that they can not always relate the symptoms to a heart attack. In some cases, female patients have had an ongoing heart attack without knowing it. In addition to the diffuse symptom picture can also gender, women's social role and status have a major impact on the decision to seek care. The fear of disturbing, denial and not to be taken seriously, plays a major role. Women find it difficult to put their own needs first. Conclusion: The authors of this study believe that more information is needed to reach out to the public continuously for women to recognize atypical symptoms of heart attack. Syfte: Syftet med studien var att beskriva genus inverkan på kvinnors situation vid insjuknande av hjärtinfarkt och beskriva varför kvinnor väntar med att söka sjukvård vid symtom på hjärtinfarkt. Metod: Litteraturstudie i beskrivande design. Artiklarna söktes fram i databasarna Pubmed och Cinahl. Resultat: Kvinnor drabbas oftare än män av så kallade atypiska symtom vid en hjärtinfarkt. Detta gör att de inte alltid kan relatera symtomen till en hjärtinfarkt. I vissa fall så har kvinnliga patienter haft en pågående hjärtinfarkt utan att veta om det. Förutom den diffusa symtombildens så kan även genus, kvinnans sociala roll och status ha en stor inverkan på beslutet att söka vård. Rädslan för att störa, förnekelse och att inte bli tagen på allvar spelar stor roll. Kvinnor har svårt att sätta sina egna behov förts utan tänker i första hand på hemmet och familjen. Slutsats: Författarna till denna studie anser att mer information behövs nå ut till allmänheten kontinuerligt för att kvinnor ska känna igen atypiska symtom på hjärtinfarkt. Bakgrund: Patientdelaktighet är en lagstadgad rättighet och ses som önskvärt och fördelaktigt. Det är dock vanligt förekommande att patienter hamnar utanför själva processen och bara blir ett instrument i den. Syfte: Syftet var att, ur ett patientperspektiv, beskriva hinder och möjligheter för vuxna patienters delaktighet i sin vård. Metod: En litteraturöversikt där 13 kvalitativa artiklar låg till grund för analys och resultat. Resultat: Hindren för delaktighet beskrevs som att känna rädsla, oro och skam, inget intresse visas för patienten, att sakna information och kunskap och patientens försämrade hälsostatus samt fysiska och mentala tillstånd. Möjligheterna beskrevs med fenomenen vårdpersonal som lyssnar, att det finns förtroende, vårdpersonal som uppmuntrar och skapar motivation, en informationssökande patient och att känna sig frisk. Slutsats: Patientdelaktighet påverkar personcentrerad omvårdnad och både patienten och vårdpersonalen har ett stort ansvar i huruvida patientdelaktighet och sedermera personcentrerad omvårdnad kan uppstå. Patienter och sjuksköterskor tycker ofta lika i sak vad gäller patientdelaktighet. Resultatet är ett verktyg för vårdpersonal att lättare identifiera vad som behövs för att möjliggöra respektive vad som hindrar patientdelaktighet. Ett arbetssätt för att göra patienten delaktig i sin vård är att vårdpersonal ska lyssna, visa intresse och delge patienten information.
Background: Patient participation is statutory and considered as desirable and profitable. Nevertheless it is common that patients are excluded from the patient participation process. Aim: The aim was to, from an adult patient perspective, describe barriers and facilitators to patient participation in their own care. Method: A literature review with 13 qualitative articles analysed to the result. Result: The barriers were described as patients feeling fear, anxiety and shame, no interest is shown towards the patient, not having information and knowledge and the patients’ impaired health status and physical and mental status. The facilitators were described as nursing staff are listening, available trust, nursing staff that encourages and creates motivation, an information seeking patient and to feel healthy. Conclusion: Patient participation affects person-centred care and the patient and nursing staff have a great responsibility in whether patient participation and later on person-centred care may arise. Patients and nurses often have similar thoughts about patient participation. The result is a tool designed for nursing staff to in an easier way identify what is needed to facilitate patient participation and what hinders it. A way of working in making the patient to participate in their care is that nursing staff shall listen, show interest and inform the patient.

Detta genererar lidande och samhällskostnader men är något som kan förhindras. Sjuksköterskan har möjlighet att i en holistisk anda förbättra för patienten med hjälp av interventioner. Syfte: Syftet är att beskriva vilka hinder och möjligheter som påverkar patienter med allvarlig psykisk sjukdom till livsstilsförändringar. Metod: Detta är en litteraturstudie där författarna har sökt och granskat vetenskapliga artiklar i olika databaser. I materialet hittades olika teman som har sammanfattats i resultatet. Resultat: De stora hindrena för att förändra sin livsföring är den psykiatriska sjukdomen och den medicinering den kräver. Sjukdomen innebär ofta sociala problem, lågt självförtroende och ångest. Medicinering ger sedering och viktökning. Generellt upplevs gruppaktiviteter som positivt då det ger struktur åt aktiviteter och socialt stöd från andra patienter. Uppmuntran från andra patienter och från personalen är viktig, vars attityd kan vara avgörande. Genom interventioner går det att förändra parametrar som vikt, motionsgrad och kunskap om livsstils hos patienterna. Konklusion: Med ett holistiskt förhållningssätt där patientens alla livsdelar ses som viktiga går det förändra livsstilen för patienter med psykisk sjukdom så att den blir mer hälsosam. Förändringar kräver att hänsyn tas till sjukdomen och medicinering samt att patienten får mycket stöd i en intervention som är individanpassad, men gärna i grupp.
Background: Patients with severe mental illness often experience physical illness as a result of poor lifestyle choices and lack of self care acts. This generates suffering and costs for society. But it is preventable; nurses can work to improve the health of her patient by motivating the patient to participate in health intervention. Aim: To describe obstacles and potentials that affects patients with severe mental illness in health promoting lifestyle changes. Method: Literature review Result: The big obstacles in changing lifestyle are the psychiatric illness and the medication that it involves. Mental illness is often generating in social problems like anxiety and low self esteem. Medication results in weight gain. Group activities are generally viewed as positive and gives structure to daily life and social support. The interventions result in health gains considering weight, activity, knowledge and eating habits. Conclusion: With a holistic view, nurses can help changing the lifestyle of patients with severe mental illness. Group interventions are to be preferred. Interventions must be implemented in line with the illness cycles and the medication.

Metod: En litteraturstudie baserad på tio vetenskapliga artiklar genomfördes. Artiklarna granskades utifrån Röda Korsets Högskolas granskningsmall. Resultat: Utifrån det givna innehållet så sammanställdes resultaten under tre kategorier: Språkbarriären som hinder för vård, här uppmärksammas att ”språkbarriären” som uppstår i kommunikationen mellan omvårdnadspersonalen och patientkategorin immigranter, är ett hinder i vården. Språkbarriären som stressfaktor, häri betonas att språkbarriären kan ses som en stresskälla för omvårdnadspersonalen. Språkbarriären som kräver tillfälliga tolkar: ett behov och ett hinder, här presenteras de så kallade tillfälliga tolkarna, d.v.s. tvåspråkiga anställda eller patienternas anhöriga, detta kan både uppfattas som ett behov och hinder i kommunikationen. Slutsats: Socialstyrelsen betonar att vårdpersonal ska ge alla patienter bra vård och omsorg oavsett patientens modersmål. Strategierna för att bekämpa språkbarriärer bör vara specifika för olika yrkeskategorier. Behovet att anlita utbildade tolkar för att säkerställa en tillfredsställande kommunikation mellan vårdpersonal och immigranter är viktigt. För att bekämpa språkbarriärer krävs insatserna från forskare, beslutsfattare och vårdpersonal.
Background: When health care staff interact with immigrant patients who have a different native tongue language skills are sometimes not sufficient. Aim: The aim is to describe the employees’ experiences when communicating with patients with a foreign native tongue. Method: A literature review was carried out based on ten scientific articles. These articles were reviewed with a review model used by the Red Cross Collage. Result: Based on the given context the results were compiled into three categories: Language barrier as an obstacle for health care, here attention is drawn to the fact that a ”language barrier”, which occurs between employees and immigrant patients, is an obstacle in health care. Language barrier as a stress factor, emphasizes that the language barrier can create stress for the staff. Language barrier which requires temporary interpreters: a need and an obstacle, temporary interpreters are presented here, namely bilingual employees or patients’ relatives. This is perceived as a necessity and an obstacle when communicating. Conclusion: The Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare emphasizes that the healthcare staff shall give all patients good health and social care no matter the native language. The strategies to combat language barriers should be specific for different professionals. The need to use trained interpreters, in order to assure a satisfactory communication between personnel and patients, is important.  To fight the language barriers actions from researchers, decision-makers and healthcare staff are required.

Syftet med vår studie var att ta reda på hur förskollärarna ser på högläsningens betydelse samt deras erfarenheter kring högläsning. Vi ville även undersöka vilka möjligheter och hinder som kan finnas för att skapa lärorika lässituationer i förskolan kring högläsningssituationerna. En kvalitativ studie användes där åtta olika förskollärare på sex olika förskolor intervjuades. I studien framkom det att de flesta använder sig av högläsningen i ett språkutvecklande syfte men även att de i stor utsträckning oftast använder högläsningen för vilan. Det framkom att förskollärarna ansåg att det kunde vara svårt att få tiden att räcka till för att arbeta med högläsningen så mycket som de skulle vilja. Vår slutsats är att förskollärarna är medvetna om hur de vill arbeta med högläsningen och med vilket syfte, dock så påverkas det av olika organisatoriska faktorer som miljöns utformning och tidsbrist vilka försvårar arbetet.

Esta tese tem como objeto de estudo as antologias da literatura sânscrita conhecidas como Puräëa e tem como objetivo observá-las como uma unidade enunciativa, relacionado-as aos elementos históricos e sociais com os quais essas obras conviveram durante seu longo período de compilação, que se estende aproximadamente do século III d.C. até por volta do século XV d.C. Para tal fim, adotaram-se como linhas teóricas a Semiótica greimasiana, as contribuições dos escritos atribuídos a Mikhail Bakhtin e predominantemente a Análise do Discurso de linha francesa, cuja perspectiva permite investigar o universo de relações existentes entre construção lingüística e elementos sócio-culturais. Os relatos míticos detacam-se como tema privilegiado por esta pesquisa, visto que concentram, em suas narrativas, as interações e negociações culturais que participaram do processo de consolidação das práticas sociais hinduístas, das quais a recitação dos Puräëa faz parte. E, uma vez que os Puräëa consistem em antologias, a presença de determinados episódios míticos revela pressupostos culturais que possibilitam identificar o diálogo existente entre os vários estratos sociais que interagiram na formação do hinduísmo. Observa-se, ademais, o papel que essa literatura desempenhou em meio às outras literaturas de seu cenário cultural, examinando-se seu estatuto de escritura sagrada a partir do conceito de discurso constituinte, o que leva ao panorama das relações interdiscursivas dos enunciados purânicos com outras vertentes da cultura sânscrita, a saber, a tradição védica e o movimento cultural do tantrismo. Exemplifica-se, por fim, o conjunto das reflexões expostas na tese com o hino conhecido como Devé-mähätmya, composto antes do século VII d.C. e transmitido junto à antologia chamada Märkaëòeya. A mitologia da Grande Deusa é vista como um expoente das relações históricas vivenciadas durante o período em que ocorreram a compilação das antologias purânicas e a consolidação do hinduísmo.
The object of research of this thesis is the collection of anthologies known as Puräëa in Sanskrit Literature and its purpose is to survey them as an enunciative unity. This is done by relating the individual works to historical and social elements with which they coexisted during the long period of their compilation, which spreads approximately from III B.C.E to XV C.E. With this purpose in mind we assume as theoretical bases Greimasian Semiotics, the works attributed to Mikhail Bakhtin and mainly French Discourse Analysis, whose perspective allows one to investigate the whole of relations existing between verbal constructions and socio-cultural elements. The mythical narratives stand out as a significant subject of this research inasmuch as they condense in speech form the cultural interactions and negotiations that were in act in the process of consolidation of Hindu social practices, among which the recitation of the Puräëa took part. And since the Puräëa works are anthologies, the occurrence of some mythical accounts can disclose cultural presuppositions that allow us to recognize the existing dialogue between several social strata intervening in the shaping of Hinduism. Furthermore, we observe the role performed by Puräëa literature in the midst of other literatures sharing the same cultural environment by the examination of its status of sacred scripture through the concept of Self-Constituting discourse. That approach leads us to an overview of the interdiscoursive relations of Puräëa enunciates with other trends of Sanskrit culture, namely, the Vedic tradition and Tantrism as a cultural movement. At last, our ideas are exemplified by the analysis of the hymn known as Devémähätmya, composed before VII B.C.E and handed down along with the anthology called Märkaëòeya. The mythology of the Great Goddess it presents is seen as an exponent of the historical relations that took place during the time the Puräëa anthologies were compiled and Hinduism was consolidated.

Aim: The paper at hand has two aims. The first aim is the investigation of how teachers of Swedish as a second language (SVA) perceive and experience the use of students’ native language in SVA- class. The second aim is to study the strategies used for the inclusion of students’ native languages in the Swedish language classroom. For this purpose, three research questions are posed. The first question examines if teachers of SVA experience any advantages of including students’ native languages in their teaching. The second question takes a closer look at what challenges and/ or limitations may occur when students’ native languages are included in SVA-class and the third question investigates what strategies for the inclusion of native languages are used by both teachers and students of SVA. Design/methodology/approach: Empirical study made with the help of personal interviews of five SVA-teachers in high school respectively secondary high school. The answers given in the interview are analysed and qualitatively presented. The results found are discussed and compared with recent literature and research papers in the field of second language acquisition and Swedish as a second language (SVA). Findings: The results of the study show that teachers see considerable advantages of including students’ native languages in SVA-class and show a generally positive attitude towards the use of the former for educational purposes. Nevertheless, the balancing of the native language used in casual conversations in class or for educational purposes is seen as a challenge by the teachers taking part in this study. Furthermore, the author of this paper found that most of the teachers interviewed do not have any concrete strategies for utilizing the resource, which students’ native languages present, in a tangible way.

My dissertation, The New Voyager: Theory and Practice of South Asian Literary Modernisms, investigates how literary modernisms in Bengali, Hindi, and Indian English functioned as much as a turning away and remixing of earlier literary traditions as a journey of engagement between the individual writer and his or her response to and attempts to re-create the modern world. This thesis explores how theories and practices of literary modernism developed in Bengali, Hindi, and Indian English in the early to mid-20th century, and explores the representations and debates surrounding literary modernisms in journals such as Kallol, Kavita, and Krittibas in Bengali, the Nayi Kavita journal and the Tar Saptak group in Hindi, and the Writers Workshop group in English. Theories of modernism and translation as proposed by South Asian literary critics such as Dipti Tripathi, Acharya Nand Dulare Bajpai, Buddhadeva Bose, and Bhola Nath Tiwari are contrasted to the manifestos of modernism found in journals such as Krittibas and against Agyeya's defense of experimentalism (prayogvad) from the Tar Saptak anthology. The dissertation then goes on to discuss how literary modernisms in South Asia occupied a vital space between local and global traditions, formal and canonical concerns, and between social engagement and individual expression. In doing so, this thesis notes how the study of modernist practices and theory in Bengali, Hindi, and English provides insight into the pluralistic, multi-dimensional, and ever-evolving cultural sphere of modern South Asia beyond the suppositions of postcolonial binaries and monolingual paradigms.

This study is about British working-class fiction in the post-war period. It covers various authors such as Robert Tressell, George Orwell, Walter Greenwood, Lewis Grassic Gibbon and DH Lawrence from the early twentieth century; writers traditionally classified as 'Angry Young Men' like John Osborne, Arnold Wesker, Shelagh Delaney, John Wain and Kingsley Amis; and working-class novelists like John Braine, Stan Barstow, David Storey, Alan Sillitoe and Barry Hines from the 1950s and 1960s. Some of the main issues dealt with in the course of this study are language, form, community, self/identity/autobiography, sexuality and relationship with bourgeois art. The major argument centres on two questions: representation of working-class life, and the relationship between working-class literary tradition and dominant ideologies. We will be arguing that while working-class fiction succeeded in challenging and rupturing bourgeois literary tradition, on the level of language and linguistic medium of expression for example, it utterly failed to break away from dominant, bourgeois modes of literary production in relation to form, for instance. Our argument is situated within Marxist approaches to literature, a political and aesthetic position from which we attempt an analysis and an evaluation of this working-class literary tradition. These critical approaches provide us also with the theoretical tool to define the political perspective of this tradition, and to judge whether it was confined to a descriptive mode of representation or located in a radical, political outlook.

Tidigare forskning visar att patienten kan ha sexuella problem som kan vara fysiska och/eller psykiska, dessa kan till exempel vara smärta och obehag vid penetration, urinläckage, vaginal lubrikation, utebliven orgasm, och erektionsproblem. Samhällets syn på sexualitet påverkar såväl patientens som sjuksköterskans syn på sexualitet och kan ge svårigheter vid diskussion om sexualitet. För att underlätta för sjuksköterskan vid kommunikation med patienten om sexualitet finns det en modell (PLISSIT-modellen). Trots teoretiska hjälpmedel tycks sjuksköterskan ha svårigheter med att diskutera sexualitet med patienten. Syftet med studien var att undersöka vad det är som hindrar sjuksköterskan att diskutera sexualitet med patienten. Metoden som användes var litteraturstudie. Sex teman framträdde från de vetenskapliga artiklarna i dataanalysen: bristande kommunikation, bristande utbildning, sjuksköterskans känslor, inte sjuksköterskans ansvarsområde, samhällssyn och kulturella faktorer och avdelningsmiljö. Resultatet visar att sjuksköterskan känner sig generad när han/hon ska diskutera sexualitet med patienten och tycker att patienten ska ta initiativ till diskussionen. Även sjuksköterskans egna känslor påverkar diskussionen om sexualitet. Sjuksköterskan behöver utbildning och träning i att diskutera sexualitet med patienten. Sjuksköterskor vill ha en plats där de kan sitta ostört med patienten och diskutera sexualitet.


Studies have shown that patients can have physical and mental sexual problems, which can be pain and discomfort with the penetration, leak of urine, vaginal lubrication, loss of orgasm and problems with the erection. Societies view of sexuality influence both the patients and the nurse’s view of sexuality which gives difficulties in discussing sexuality. To facilitate the communication of sexuality between the nurses and the patients the PLISSIT-model can be used. The aim of this study was to identify what is preventing the nurse to discuss the sexuality with the patient. The method of this study was a literature review. Six themes was located from the articles, deficient communication, deficient education, nurses’ feelings, not the nurses’ responsibility, social outlook and cultural factors and the nursing ward environment. The findings were that the nurse feeling embarrassed when he/she discusses sexual problems with the patient and thinks it is the patient who should ask about the sexual problems. Abstract:
English CLIL-instruction in Sweden is supposed to be beneficial to students who want to improve their academic English vocabulary proficiency in preparation for studies or employment abroad. However, recent research shows that there is no difference in academic English proficiency between students in upper secondary school CLIL-programs and students in regular upper secondary schools in Sweden. Furthermore, educational researchers question if CLIL-programs in Sweden qualify to be defined as CLIL-instruction since Swedish translanguaging is extensively used which does not make the programs 100% Englishmedium instruction. Through teacher observations and questionnaires, this study investigates the classroom practices at a CLIL-program in Sweden in addition to ask the CLIL-teachers about their teaching strategies in regards to promoting students’ acquisition, development, and use of academic English. The findings include that the classroom practices are in accordance with practices considered beneficial to students’ proficiency in academi c English by numerous previous studies. In addition, all the teachers questioned in this study purposely work to support and develop students’ academic language proficiency in their respective subject areas and across the curriculum. The study also found four possible factors that perhaps can undermine the acquisition, development and use of academic English vocabulary and those include the following: First, the teachers believe that the students are already sufficiently fluent in academic English, and thus concentrate more on content than on language in their instruction. Secondly, extensive translanguaging in the classroom is common in addition to the students’ habit of speaking Swedish to each other in stude nt-tostudent communication. Thirdly, the students do not receive the corresponding level of education in their native language of Swedish as they do in English, which can have detrimental effects on their abilities to develop their English past their Swedish language abilities. Finally, classroom practices that are not inclusive of all students can work to undermine the acquisition and use of academic English vocabulary.

Os símbolos nacionais e, mais especificamente, os hinos nacionais desempenham um papel importante nas lutas pela manutenção e disputa do poder político nas sociedades. Entretanto, poucos estudos têm sido realizados a respeito da natureza, funções e características dos hinos nacionais. Além disso, a maioria do material sobre hinos nacionais limita-se a publicações que trazem apenas as letras e os nomes dos autores dos hinos. Nesta dissertação, eu investigo 9 hinos nacionais sob a perspectiva da Análise Crítica do Discurso (Fairclough, 1989) e da Gramática Sistêmica Funcional (Halliday 1978, 1989, 1994). Os hinos analisados foram sub-divididos em 3 grupos: a) monárquicos, b) revolucionários, e c) hinos de consolidação. Os resultados sugerem que (i) os hinos monárquicos refletem a tentativa dos Monarcas de permanecerem no poder através de uma caracterização positiva que objetiva representa-los como seres humanos especiais, principalmente na posição de Meta e Beneficiários; (ii) os hinos revolucionários refletem a tentativa de um grupo de conquistar o poder exortando os cidadãos à luta e representando-os na posição de Atores, Portadores, Identificados, e Possuidores; e (iii) os hinos de consolidação refletem a fase pós-conquista do poder através da representação de elementos simbólicos tais como países e bandeiras na posição de Atores, Portadores, Identificados, e Possuidores. Além disso, os hinos nacionais trazem em sua estrutura os quatro elementos exortativos (Longacre, 1992) que os permitem serem classificados como um tipo de discurso exortativo. A importância deste trabalho reside no fato de que o mesmo contribui para uma melhor compreensão de como as lutas pelo poder político moldam a produção dos hinos nacionais e como os detentores de poder e os cidadãos são representados neste processo.

Abstract:
I denna studie kombineras språkvetenskap och religionsvetenskap i syfte att undersöka studenters undermedvetna språkattityder till tre religiösa personbenämningar: muslim(er), hindu(er) och kristen(-na). Deltagarna består av studenter över hela Sverige och majoriteten har könsidentitet kvinna samt är i åldern 15-25 år. Deltagarnas språkattityder undersöks genom en enkätundersökning med ett matched guise-test och semantisk differential. Resultaten tyder på att personbenämningen kristen(-na) ger upphov till fler negativa konnotationer än framförallt muslim(er) men även hindu(er). Muslimer rankas exempelvis som mer hänsynsfulla och intelligenta än kristna. Hinduer rankas exempelvis som mjuka medan kristna exempelvis rankas som mer dumma än hinduer och muslimer samtidigt som de rankas som hänsynsfulla och sympatiska. Attityderna till dessa tre personbenämningar verkar med andra ord följa ett trestegsmönster där personbenämningen muslim(er) skapar flest positiva konnotationer, tätt följd av hindu(er) och sist personbenämningen kristen(-na) som skapar positiva och negativa konnotationer.

Abstract:
This study aims to explore the potential benefits and disadvantages of utilizing video game narratives in Swedish EFL teaching. The subject is approached through a qualitative literature review of previous research on the use of video games in the process of L2 acquisition. The results are then discussed from a sociocultural perspective, in relation to the frameworks introduced in the background and to the Swedish steering documents. The results indicate that video games are likely to be part of many students’ out-of-school experiences of the English language and that playing video games can be seen as an example of extramural language learning. The results also highlight how engaging in multiplayer video game narratives can aid L2 acquisition by for example increasing motivation, expanding learner vocabulary and by providing learners with strategies for discourse management such as politeness, humor and small talk. The collaborative and interactive nature of the video game narrative and of video game communities is also shown to align well with the Swedish steering documents that promote social interaction and the development of communicative competence. However, direct classroom implementation of video games is problematized by the fact that not all students have previous experience or tools for interacting with the video game format of storytelling and that gender discrepancies in video game consumption could lead to boys benefiting more than girls from language learning through video game narratives.

Abstract:
During the last decades, a Hindi Dalit literary movement has emerged in North India. This essay is a study and comparison on character portrayals in short stories by two authors from this movement, Jayprakash Kardam and Ajay Navaria. The aim of this essay is to explore the implications of these portrayals considering these authors’ views on social change, their literary affiliations and a theoretical discussion on Dalit literature. The methodical basis for this study is a detailed character analysis of these short stories’ protagonists, antagonists and other relevant characters, supported by narrative- and conceptual analyses. This essay argues that the theoretical abstraction of Dalit consciousness [cetnā] has a mainstreaming effect on the Dalit experience [anubhūti] when it is portrayed in literature. These dynamics are visible in Kardam’s stories, in which his portrayals of the Dalit protagonist follow the conventional Dalit character template, a forthright and innocent archetype juxtaposed against an evil Brahmin. The pivoting moment in Kardam’s stories is when consciousness awakens in the Dalit protagonist and he joins the corporate resistance against a casteist society. In comparison, Navaria makes the individual the site for change in his stories—reflecting the Gandhian notion of hṛday parivartan (“change of heart”). Navaria foregrounds alternative perspectives to Dalit cetnā in his stories and seeks to understand his characters from a broader human experience. I further argue that Navaria’s stories are suggestive of an expansion of the binary discussion on anubhūti (“experience”) and sahānubhūti (“sympathy”) by the term samānubhūti (“empathy”) since Navaria, by his more complex, nuanced and personalised characterisation of both Dalits and Brahmins, provides a common ground that invites to reconciliation. This study concludes that while Kardam could be designated as a conventional Dalit author, Navaria should rather be situated in the boundaries between the Dalit and the mainstream Hindi literary field. It further concludes that more research is needed on theoretical concepts used in the Dalit literary discourse.

Denna studie tar sin utgångspunkt i en undran om vad lärare gör efter genomförd bedömning med stöd av det nationella bedömningsstödet i svenska årskurs 1, på ett formativt sätt tillsammans med eleven. Då det nationella bedömningsstödet är nytt och obligatoriskt att använda i årskurs 1 var det av intresse att undersöka vilken nytta det ger enligt lärarna samt vilka uppfattningar och erfarenheter de har om det. Formativ bedömning genomförs inte enbart vid ett sådant kartläggningsmaterial utan även vid den övriga dagliga undervisningen, därför var syftet också att undersöka vilka faktorer som påverkar möjligheten till det. Studien är av kvalitativ karaktär och har den proximala utvecklingszonen och sociokulturell teori som teoretiskt ramverk, där lärande sker i interaktion med andra, vilket genomsyrar hela studien och presenteras i studiens fjärde avsnitt. Data samlades in genom fem intervjuer med lärare i årskurs 1 och 2. Data har bearbetats och analyserats genom en tematisk analys. Studiens resultat visar på att lärare inte gör några större förändringar efter genomfört bedömningsstöd och anser sig inte få reda på något utstickande i elevers kunskapsnivå, bedömningsstödet anses mer vara en trygghet för den egna bedömningen de gör. Genomförandet anses som svårt och tidskrävande, både på grund av stora klassuppsättningar och en saknad av en annan personals stöd. Övriga svårigheter för formativ bedömning är också faktorn om tid en svårighet, då klasserna består av många elever på en lärare.

Abstract:
Studien handlar om hur kamratbedömning tillämpas i skolan av både lärare och elever. Från lärarnas sida undersöks vilka instruktioner som ges, vilka metoder och strategier lärarna använder sig av och vilka åsikter de har om kamratbedömning. I undersökningen fokuseras det även på vilken återkopplingsnivå eleverna använder i arbetet, skillnader och likheter mellan olika klasser och genom vilka media eller vilket medium deras återkoppling sker. Datan har samlats in med hjälp av observationer i tre olika klasser och intervjuer med tre klasslärare. Den tidigare forskningen som varit central för undersökningen visar att eleverna bör använda sig av bedömningsmallar i sina återkopplingar, men resultatet av föreliggande undersökningen visar på motsatsen då användningen av bedömningsmallar påverkar elevernas återkopplingar på ett negativt sätt. I diskussionskapitlet framförs hur bedömningsmallarna styr vilken nivå elevernas återkoppling sker på och i många fall ligger den på en låg nivå, medan den klass som inte fick bedömningsmallar gav återkoppling på en kvalitativt högre nivå.

Bakgrund: Högskolor och universitet bedriver utbildning och forskning, där sätten för att driva dessa under åren har förändrats. Lean-verktyg och principer har blivit allt vanligare i såväl offentliga som privata organisationer för att söka efter förbättringar och då även i högre utbildning. För att förbättra och effektivisera processer i högre utbildning kan Lean-verktyg och principer vara ett alternativ, dock finns det begränsat med forskning inom området som ligger till grund för denna studie. Syfte: Denna studie syftar till att undersöka vilka möjligheter och hinder det finns med att tillämpa Lean-verktyg och principer i högskolor. Studien undersöker ifall högskolor kan förbättra sina interna processer samt vilka problem och begränsningar som finns med tillämpningen av Lean-verktyg och principer. Metod: En abduktiv ansats har använts för att besvara studiens syfte och frågeställningar. Den teoretiska referensramen har samlats in i samband med insamlingen av empirisk data från en fallstudie på Högskolan i Gävle. Genom analys och diskussion av den teoretiska referensramen och insamlad data från fallstudien har en slutsats arbetats fram. Resultat/analys: Fallstudiens organisation och den valda processen har kartlagts utifrån dokument, intervjuer och enkäter. En värdeflödesanalys presenteras som belyser slöserier i processen och en föreslagen process åskådliggörs. Begränsningar: Lean-verktyg och principer i högre utbildning är ett område med begränsad forskning och är därför i behov av mer kunskap kring ämnet. Slutsats: Tillämpningen av Lean-verktyg och principer i högre utbildning har i denna studie visats vara möjligt och användbart. Studien visar också på att problem och begränsningar finns med tillämpningen som bör beaktas.
Background: Higher education conducts education and research, where the ways of operating these have changed over the years. Lean tools and principles have become increasingly common in both public and private organizations in search of improvements, which also regard higher education. In order to improve and streamline processes in higher education, Lean tools and principles may be an alternative. However, there is limited research in the area that forms the basis for further research. Purpose: This study aims to investigate the possibilities and obstacles of applying Lean tools and principles in higher education. The study explore whether higher education can improve their internal processes and also the problems and limitations that exist with the application of Lean tools and principles. Method: An abductive approach has been used to answer the study's purpose and questions. The theoretical framework has been collected in connection with the gathering of empirical data from a case study at the University of Gävle. Through the analysis and discussion of the theoretical framework and data collected from the case study, a conclusion has been drawn up. Results/analysis: The case study's organization and the selected process have been mapped based on documents, interviews and surveys. A value stream mapping is presented that highlights waste in the process and a proposed process is illustrated. Limitations: Lean tools and principles in higher education are an area of limited research and are therefore in need of more knowledge about the subject. Conclusion: In this study, the application of Lean tools and principles in higher education has been shown to be potential and useful. The study also shows that problems and limitations exist with the application.
