Abstract:
According to existing rigid roofing projects, a new structure called the Levy hinged-beam cable dome is proposed. By replacing the upper flexible cables with hinged beams, rigid plates can be installed overhead. To fulfill the requirements of integral tow-lifting construction, the setting criteria for the temporary hinged joints on ridge beams were presented. An 8-m diameter specimen was manufactured and monitored to investigate the structural configurations during the accumulative traction-hoisting construction process. Finally, the specimen was tested under full-span and half-span loading conditions, while a numerical model was built to verify the experimental values. The results show that in the early stages of traction-hoisting, the structure establishes the overall prestress and finds its internal force balance, while the entire structure is in a shape of “ω”. As the component’s internal force increases during the construction steps, and the local deformations of the hinged beams gradually decrease, with the entire structure changing from “ω” to “m”, and finally reach their designed states. Under full-span loads, large local deformations occurred at the HB-3 hinges, while the bending stresses of these hinged beams were relatively small. Under half-span loads, the loading part exhibits a downward appearance, while the unloading part exhibits upward deflection.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil (Ancient Studies)--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In the past, Bible translations sometimes suffered from inadequate theoretical and grammatical description, which interfered with consistent translation choices. Nowadays, however, development of translation theory and improved description of Biblical Hebrew cause more scientifically motivated translation options to be generated in a more consistent way. This study has as its point of departure for future Bible translations the translation model of Gutt’s direct and indirect strategies within the paradigm of Nord’s functionalist approach. According to Gutt first generation Bible readers can make use of indirect translations while serious Bible students prefer to come to their own conclusions about source texts. For that reason translators should provide all possible communicative clues from source texts to enable target readers to reach appropriate interpretations about its underlying message. Following an overview of a sample of previous Bible translations, three Afrikaans translations are discussed to examine whether previous translation approaches (sometimes assumed) have supplied an adequate theoretical basis for ensuring consistent translation choices. Nida’s influential dynamic-functional approach is discussed next. My hypothesis that past translation theory and the description of Biblical Hebrew grammar were not adequate to provide motivation for consistent translation options, is then tested during a comparative study of the translation of the communicative clue hinneh in three previous Afrikaans Bible translations. Gutt’s requirement for direct Bible translations, that all communicative clues should be translated, presupposes insight into translation theory and close co-operation between a Biblical-Hebrew and a translation expert. This requirement was tested and proved during this study. In accordance with the findings of this study recommendations are made to demonstrate some ways in which hinneh as example of other complicated communicative clues can be treated in future Afrikaans Bible translations.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Flexure hinges inherently lose stiffness in supporting directions when deflected. In this paper a method is presented for optimizing the geometry of flexure hinges, while supporting stiffnesses are retained. These hinges are subjected to a load and deflected an angle of up to ±20°. The measure of performance is defined by the first unwanted eigenfrequency, which is closely related to the supporting stiffnesses. During the optimization, constraints are applied to the actuation moment and the maximum occurring stress. Evaluations of three cross flexure hinge types and a butterfly flexure hinge are presented. A flexible multibody modeling approach is used for efficient modeling. Each of these hinge types is described by a parameterized geometric model. The obtained optimal hinge designs are validated with a finite element model and show good agreement. The optimal solution of the butterfly flexure hinge shows the least decrease in the supporting stiffnesses of the evaluated hinges.

Abstract:
The design obtained from a topology optimization problem can largely depend on the type of the ground structure used. A new type of ground structure containing hinged beam elements is described in this paper that reduces the dependence of the optimal design on the ground structure. Apart from the beam and truss elements that have traditionally been used, two new types of elements are introduced: 1) a beam with a hinge on one end and a solid connection on the other end, 2) beam element with hinges on both ends. These elements are particularly useful when applied to a compliant mechanism design using a truss/beam type ground structure. A couple of compliant mechanism problems are solved to demonstrate the effectiveness of these elements.

Abstract The use of compliant hinges as integral elements of origami-based and origami-inspired structures can provide significant benefits compared to other hinge concepts, namely ease of integration, durability and tunable stiffness, range and target positioning of the hinge. So far, mostly classical straight-crease constructions have been used for the application of such hinges. Curved-crease geometries impose new constraints on the application of compliant elements in the crease region due to the implicit surface curvature in every non-flat folding state. This paper introduces a new, simple surrogate hinge based on angled slash arrays, and compares their behavior to classical lamina-emergent surrogate hinges.

Abstract:
Thick-rigid deployable origami structures make use of compliant mechanisms to create folds and hinging surfaces. This paper examines the potential types of compact directional and frictional hinges to supplement the usage of compliant mechanisms in flat-folding applications. Rigid motioncontrolling hinges offer many opportunities to deployable origami. Hinges, in the form of hard stops, ratchets, or spring detents can allow for complex shape generation through kinematic manipulation. Hinged origami lends itself well to the creation of origami robotics, deployable structures, and arrays. With the ability to offer a high packing factor and create a self-supporting deployable structure, further research should be conducted into the application and development of hinged origami.

Abstract:
Many new and complex methods have been proposed for building folded structures from thick materials. Volume trimming was one of the first and simplest techniques for fabricating ideal hinges using thick materials, though has remained largely unmodified since it was proposed. This paper extends and customizes constant thickness volume trimming for layered fabrication processes. Previously, constant thickness volume trimming uniformly removed material local to each hinge, leaving layers near the hinge vulnerable to delamination. We provide a method to retain material on both sides of the fold line to create stronger hinges by varying the profile of removed material along the axis of the hinge, even for hinges with large fold angle.

Abstract:
This paper deals with the numerical and experimental work carried out as part of the development of a new wave energy converter device suggested by Aker Solutions. The device consists of one catenary moored platform hinged to several smaller buoys. Energy is extracted through the relative rotation in the hinges. Model tests have been carried out in a towing tank with the aim to verify the use of linear hydrodynamic theory as a mean to predict the annual mean power production. The mathematical model of the device relies on linear hydrodynamic theory, and the commercial BEM code WAMIT is used to obtain the hydrodynamic coefficients. The equation of motion is formulated using generalized coordinates and Lagrange equation. The non-linear characteristics of the pneumatic cylinders, used to represent the power take-off forces in the model tests, necessitate the use of a time domain model. The convolution integral representing the radiation forces is replaced by an approximate state-space model, which is obtained using an frequency domain identification method. The results show that the simulation model overpredicts the mean absorbed power by approximately 20% in sea states that result in moderate hinge response, whereas in one particular sea state that produce large hinge response, and consequently large power absorption, the overprediction is as large as 49%. This trend is expected, since large hinge response imply that the linear assumption is violated.

Abstract:
Numerical modelling and hydrodynamic analysis of single-hinged and double-hinged articulated tower are carried out. A single-hinged articulated tower (SHAT) is designed and modelled in AQWA and response in the time domain and frequency domain for the selected degrees of freedom has been studied. For double-hinged articulated tower (DHAT) an intermediate hinge is introduced and the response of the same is analysed. A comparative study between SHAT and DHAT response is carried out through the work. Also the influence of buoyancy chamber size on SHAT response has been investigated in the work. The entire analysis is done assuming the body is behaving rigidly. From the analysis, it is concluded that the maximum tip displacement of double-hinged articulated tower (DHAT) is increased by 40% compared to single-hinged articulated tower (SHAT) in random waves. The maximum tip displacement of double-hinged articulated tower increases by 2.3 times if the position of the intermediate hinge is raised by 5% (11 m above from the primary position). The natural frequency of SHAT increases by 22% and maximum hinge rotation by 14% if the outer diameter of buoyancy chamber is increased by 20% from primary dimension although in terms of its numerical value these are fairly small.

Abstract:
The lamina emergent torsional (LET) joint is one of the most important components in lamina emergent mechanisms (LEMs), which can play a key role in its movement performance. This paper summarizes the existing hinges and compares their performance. Based on this, eight new flexure hinges are designed and the finite element analysis (FEA) models are created. Their bending properties, tension and compression resistant properties are analyzed respectively. In order to achieve the preliminary judgment of flexible hinge properties, comprehensive performance parameters q1 and q2 are proposed. The comprehensive performance of the eight hinges is compared according to the calculation results of q1 and q2. The theoretical formula of hinge with best performance is deduced and verified. Finally, the effect of length on the comprehensive performance of the eight hinges are analyzed. The result shows that the structure meets the design requirement of lifting comprehensive performance of hinges.

Abstract:
Research on topology optimization of compliant mechanisms is extensive but the design of flexure hinges using topology optimization method is comparatively rare. This paper deals with topology optimization of flexure hinges undergoing large-displacement. The basic optimization model is developed for topology optimization of the revolute hinge. The objective function for the synthesis of large-displacement flexure hinges are proposed together with constraints function. The geometrically nonlinear behaviour of flexure hinge is modelled using the total Lagrangian finite element formulation. The equilibrium is found by using a Newton-Raphson iterative scheme. The sensitivity analysis of the objective functions are calculated by the adjoint method and the optimization problem is solved using the method of moving asymptotes (MMA). Numerical examples are used to show the validity of the proposed method and the differences between the results obtained by linear and nonlinear modelling are large.

Abstract:
Origami is the traditional art of paper folding, which yields objects that in engineering terms can be considered as mechanisms with relative motion between panels (paper) constrained by hinges (folds). Non-paper materials are often studied for origami-inspired applications in engineering. This article is concerned with material selection appropriate for the hinge function, for which most non-paper materials are lacking either in strength or range of motion. The proposed hinge material of interest is bulk metallic glass (BMG) for its low stiffness, wear and corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and extreme capacity for elastic deformation. In this paper, panel spacing and geometry are examined to provide insight for designing thin BMG folding membrane hinges that connect larger regions of thicker material (panels). Finite element analysis is performed to study the stress variation, distribution, and displacement along the hinge for several design variations, and several loading profiles are discussed to determine the necessity of modified rounded-edge panels. The results will directly aid in creating origami-inspired designs with membrane hinges and further help with designing devices such as foldable electronics, optical systems, and deployable solar arrays.
