Abstract:
According to existing rigid roofing projects, a new structure called the Levy hinged-beam cable dome is proposed. By replacing the upper flexible cables with hinged beams, rigid plates can be installed overhead. To fulfill the requirements of integral tow-lifting construction, the setting criteria for the temporary hinged joints on ridge beams were presented. An 8-m diameter specimen was manufactured and monitored to investigate the structural configurations during the accumulative traction-hoisting construction process. Finally, the specimen was tested under full-span and half-span loading conditions, while a numerical model was built to verify the experimental values. The results show that in the early stages of traction-hoisting, the structure establishes the overall prestress and finds its internal force balance, while the entire structure is in a shape of “ω”. As the component’s internal force increases during the construction steps, and the local deformations of the hinged beams gradually decrease, with the entire structure changing from “ω” to “m”, and finally reach their designed states. Under full-span loads, large local deformations occurred at the HB-3 hinges, while the bending stresses of these hinged beams were relatively small. Under half-span loads, the loading part exhibits a downward appearance, while the unloading part exhibits upward deflection.

Abstract:
In the present paper, an innovative, recently patented technique for the construction of a curved structural member without scaffolds is proposed and illustrated. It consists of a Hinged Lifting Arch (HLA), using Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) bonded strips. In detail, a series of blocks are cut following an arch geometry and then aligned on the ground floor to bond a composite on their top surface. Moreover, impregnation of the polymeric adhesive is not allowed at the extremities of each block. The fiber sheet is applied continuously along the entire extrados. In this context, hinges are introduced, and the FRP-connected blocks can easily rotate in the opposite direction around the contact ends (i.e., hinges). Finally, the middle block is lifted up, and the arch takes the desired shape. Moreover, an analytical model is proposed and discussed for designing the proper aspect ratio of the blocks in order to ensure full mutual contact when the HLA is completely lifted. The advantages of the proposed technique relate to the absence of scaffolds and improved seismic strength against horizontal loads, thanks to the presence of the FRP, which limits the occurrence of hinges at the extrados.

Abstract:
The immobilization of non-rigid objects is a largely unaddressed subject. We explore the problem by studying the immobilization of a serial chain of polygons connected by rotational joints, or hinges, in a given placement with frictionless point contacts. We show that n + 2 such contacts along edge interiors or at concave vertices suffice to immobilize any serial chain of n ≠ 3 polygons without parallel edges; it remains open whether five contacts can immobilize three hinged polygons. At most n + 3 contacts suffice to immobilize a serial chain of n polygons when the polygons are allowed to have parallel edges. We also study a robust version of immobility, comparable to the classical notion of form closure, which is insensitive to perturbations. The robustness is achieved at the cost of a small increase in the number of contacts: [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] frictionless point contacts suffice for a chain of n hinged polygons without and with parallel edges respectively.

Abstract:
The paper provides a brief review of the literature on the theory and methods of calculating hinged-connected or articulated structures on an elastic base. The author refers to the works of B. G. Korenev, G. Ya. Popov, I. A. Simvulidi, R. V. Serebryany, A. G. Yuriev, in which, using various approaches, studies have been carried out to calculate hinged-connected beams and slabs on an elastic base. From the analysis of scientific literature on the topic under consideration, it can be concluded that there is no general approach to solving this problem, which is valid for any hinged-connected beams and plates lying on any model of an elastic base under the action of an arbitrary external load. In addition, a similar problem for this type of engineering calculations is observed in the normative documents. In the Republic of Belarus, a number of industry documents have been used to calculate pavement bearing elements for various highways and track transverse structures, in which road pavements with a load-bearing element and the connection of elements between themselves (hinged or rigid) are considered in an incoherent formulation. The paper proposes a universal approach for calculating hinged-connected beams on an elastic foundation, based on the mixed method of structural mechanics, taking into account the Zhemochkin ratios for functions of the elastic medium effects. The following hypotheses and assumptions are taken into account: only normal stresses act on the contact of the beam with the base, hypotheses of the bending theory are valid for beams, hinges between the beams are cylindrical, and the distribution of contact stresses along the width of the beams is uniform. As a result of the proposed calculation, the stress-strain state of a system of hinged-connected beams on an elastic foundation has been investigated, namely: distribution of contact stresses under beams, internal forces in the beams and hinged joints, as well as settlements of the elastic foundation under them. The numerical implementation of this approach has been performed using the mathematical package Mathematica 10.4. Examples of calculation are given for different versions of hinged-connected beams and an elastic base: for three hinged-connected beams based on Winkler and seven – on an elastic half-space.

Abstract:
Background:Ankle foot orthoses (AFOs) are usually used for patients with incomplete spinal cord injury (ISCI) to provide support in walking. Objectives:The aim of this study was to compare the effect of AFOs, with and without ankle hinges, on specific gait parameters during treadmill training by subjects with ISCI.Study Design:Quasi-experimental.Methods:Five patients with ISCI at the thoracic level participated in this study. Gait evaluation was performed when walking 1) barefoot 2) wearing a solid AFO and 3) wearing a hinged AFO.Results:The mean step length when walking barefoot was 26.3 ± 16.37cm compared to 31.3 ± 17.27 cm with a solid AFO and 28.5 ± 15.86 cm with a hinged AFO. The mean cadence for walking barefoot was 61.59 ± 25.65 steps/min. compared to 50.94 ± 22.36 steps/min. with a solid AFO and 56.25 ± 24.44 steps/min with a hinged AFO. Significant differences in cadence and step length during walking were only demonstrated between the barefoot condition and when wearing a solid AFO. Significant difference was not observed between conditions in mean of ankle range of motion. Conclusion:The solid AFO was the only condition which improved cadence and step length in patients during ISCI gait training.Clinical relevanceA solid AFO could be used permanently to compensate for impaired ankle function or it could be used while retraining stepping.

Abstract:
Kotimaisen maidontuotannon kilpailukyvyn säilyttäminen edellyttää tuotannon sopeuttamista markkinoilla ja tukipolitiikassa tapahtuviin muutoksiin. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää, millaisia rehuyhdistelmiä käyttämällä maidontuotannon lehmäkohtainen katetuotto on paras mahdollinen ja miten markkinahintojen sekä tukien muutokset vaikuttavat tähän optimiin.Tutkimusongelman ratkaisua varten rakennettiin dynaaminen optimointimalli, jolla maksimoitiin päiväkohtaista katetuottoa kiinteille kustannuksille. Tässä yhteydessä kiinteiksi kustannuksiksi oletettiin kaikki muut kustannukset paitsi mallissa mukana olevat rehukustannukset. Mallilla kuvattiin keskimääräisen suomalaisen lehmän rehunkulutusta ja tuotantoa kolmannella lypsykaudella. Optimointimenetelmänä käytettiin verkkoteoriaan perustuvaa lyhimmän polun menetelmää.Käytetyt väkirehut olivat rehuvilja (ohra ja kaura 1:1) ja rypsirouhe. Lisäksi mallissa oli mukana kaksi säilörehua kerrallaan; yhteensä tutkittiin viittä erilaatuista säilörehua. Maito-, valkuais- ja rasvatuotosfunktioina käytettiin koelypsymallin pohjalta muotoiltuja yhtälöitä. Rehuannoksen väkirehupitoisuuden ja väkirehun raakavalkuaispitoisuuden vaikutukset tuotokseen määritettiin ns. Tuotosvastehankkeen tulosten pohjalta. Korkea valkuaispitoisuus nosti maidon hintaa, joten valkuaisrehua kannatti käyttää suhteellisen paljon.Maidon komponenttien hintasuhteiden muutoksen vaikutukset optimiin olivat vähäiset, sillä maidon koostumuksen muuttaminen ruokinnan avulla on kallista.

Abstract:
A rigid ventral shelf ankle foot orthosis (AFO) may improve gait in children with spastic cerebral palsy (SCP) whose gait is characterized by excessive knee flexion in stance. However, these AFOs can also impede ankle range of motion (ROM) and thereby inhibit push-off power. A more spring-like AFO can enhance push-off and may potentially reduce walking energy cost. The recent development of an adjustable spring-hinged AFO now allows adjustment of AFO stiffness, enabling tuning toward optimal gait performance. This study aims to quantify the mechanical properties of this spring-hinged AFO for each of its springs and settings. Using an AFO stiffness tester, two AFO hinges and their accompanying springs were measured. The springs showed a stiffness range of 0.01−1.82 N·m·deg−1. The moment-threshold increased with increasing stiffness (1.13–12.1 N·m), while ROM decreased (4.91–16.5°). Energy was returned by all springs (11.5–116.3 J). These results suggest that the two stiffest available springs should improve joint kinematics and enhance push-off in children with SCP walking with excessive knee flexion.

Abstract:
Abstract Research linking heterogeneity and democracy usually focuses on one single dimension of heterogeneity, such as the distribution of power resources, income inequality, gender inequality, or ethnic fractionalization. Empirical results have so far been inconsistent. This article attempts a sound conceptualization of the phenomenon of heterogeneity. In order to assess whether and how heterogeneity hampers democracy, we will first define what “heterogeneity” means and examine its various dimensions. Then we will discuss why and in which respect heterogeneity constitutes a challenge to democratic transition and consolidation and will review previous research. Our empirical analysis gauges the effect of various dimensions of heterogeneity on the political trajectory of states since the beginning of the third wave of democratization. We find that, while most facets of heterogeneity do not hinder democratic transition, most of them complicate democratic consolidation. Our final discussion offers some suggestions on how the obstacles that heterogeneity poses for democratic development could be overcome and which principles, procedures and institutions are most appropriate to deal with each of the different dimensions of heterogeneity.

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper I argue that, contrary to what several prominent scholars of On Certainty have claimed, Wittgenstein did not maintain that simple mathematical propositions like “2 × 2 = 4” or “12 × 12 = 144,” much like G. E. Moore’s truisms, could be examples of hinge propositions. In particular, given his overall conception of mathematics, it was impossible for him to single out these simpler mathematical propositions from the rest of mathematical statements, to reserve only to them a normative function. I then maintain that these mathematical examples were introduced merely as objects of comparison to bring out some peculiar features of the only hinges he countenanced in On Certainty, which were all outside the realm of mathematics. I then close by gesturing at how the distinction between mathematical hinges and non-hinges could be exemplified and by exploring its consequences with respect to (Wittgenstein’s) philosophy of mathematics.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The paper presents an analytical approach to corner-filleted flexure hinges. Closed- form solutions are derived for the in-plane compliance factors. It is demonstrated that the corner-filleted flexure hinge spans a domain delimited by the simple beam and the right circular flexure hinge. A comparison that is made with the right circular flexure hinges indicates that the corner-filleted flexures are more bending-compliant and induce lower stresses but are less precise in rotation. The finite element simulation and experimental results confirmed the model predictions.
