Abstract:
The number of human embryology collections is very limited worldwide. Some of these comprise the Carnegie Collection, Kyoto Collection, and the Blechschmidt Collection. One further embryonic collection is the Hinrichsen Collection of the Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, which also contains very well-preserved embryos/fetuses, along with approximately 16,000 histological sections. The digitization of this collection is indispensable to enable conservation of the collection for the future and to provide a large group of embryologists, researchers, and physicians access to these histological slides. A small selection of these scans is available at the website of the Digital Embryology Consortium [https://human-embryology.org/wiki/Main_Page].

Abstract Hinrichsen, H-H., Dickey-Collas, M., Huret, M., Peck, M. A., and Vikebø, F. B. 2011. Evaluating the suitability of coupled biophysical models for fishery management. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 68: 1478–1487. The potential role of coupled biophysical models in enhancing the conservation, management, and recovery of fish stocks is assessed, with emphasis on anchovy, cod, herring, and sprat in European waters. The assessment indicates that coupled biophysical models are currently capable of simulating transport patterns, along with temperature and prey fields within marine ecosystems; they therefore provide insight into the variability of early-life-stage dynamics and connectivity within stocks. Moreover, the influence of environmental variability on potential recruitment success may be discerned from model hindcasts. Based on case studies, biophysical modelling results are shown to be capable of shedding light on whether stock management frameworks need re-evaluation. Hence, key modelling products were identified that will contribute to the development of viable stock recovery plans and management strategies. The study also suggests that approaches combining observation, process knowledge, and numerical modelling could be a promising way forward in understanding and simulating the dynamics of marine fish populations.

Abstract Hüssy, K., Hinrichsen, H.-H., and Huwer, B. 2012. Hydrographic influence on the spawning habitat suitability of western Baltic cod (Gadus morhua) – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 69: 1736–1743. Recruitment variability of marine fish is influenced by the reproductive potential of the stock (i.e. stock characteristics and abundance) and the survival of early life stages, mediated by environmental conditions of both a physical (water temperature, salinity and oxygen conditions, ocean currents) and a biological nature (i.e. food, predators). The objective of this study is to assess the importance of variability in environmental conditions within different western Baltic cod spawning grounds for egg survival. Habitat identification was based on environmental threshold levels for egg survival and development and ambient hydrographical conditions at different times during the spawning season. The long-term resolution of environmental conditions allowing survival of western Baltic cod eggs indicates that favourable conditions predominantly occurred during the late spawning season in April/May, while minimum survival rates could be expected from January to March. Unsuitable time periods and habitats exhibiting the highest mortality rates are exclusively characterized by ambient water temperatures below the critical survival threshold. Despite the strong influence of water temperature on habitat suitability, the impact of habitat suitability on recruitment was not clearly defined, suggesting that other mechanisms regulate year class strength.

Egg mortality: predation and hydrography in the central Baltic. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 68: 1379–1390. Cod and sprat are the dominant fish species in the Baltic pelagic ecosystem, both of great economic importance and ecologically strongly interlinked. Management of both species is challenged by highly variable recruitment success. Recent studies have identified predation and hydrographic conditions during the egg phase to be of critical importance. Two years of extensive field investigations in the Bornholm Basin, central Baltic Sea, were undertaken. In 2002, a typical stagnation situation characterized by low salinity and poor oxygen conditions was investigated, and in early 2003, a major inflow of North Sea water completely changed the hydrographic conditions by increasing salinity and oxygen content, thereby altering ecological conditions. The goal was to quantify egg mortality caused by predation and hydrography, and to compare these estimates with independent estimates based on cohort analysis. Results indicated high intra-annual variability in egg mortality. Cod and sprat egg mortality responded differently to the major Baltic inflow: mortality related to hydrographic conditions increased for sprat and decreased for cod. On the other hand, predation mortality during peak spawning decreased for sprat and increased for cod.

Climate-driven long-term trends in Baltic Sea oxygen concentrations and the potential consequences for eastern Baltic cod (Gadus morhua). – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 68: 2019–2028. Variations in oxygen conditions in the Baltic are influenced by several mechanisms. Generally, the frequency and magnitude of major inflows have been identified as the most crucial process for the renewal of oxygen-depleted water masses in the Baltic Sea. Furthermore, enhanced degradation of suspended organic matter by bacteria over the past few decades has increased oxygen consumption. Finally, the effects of large-scale climate warming are causing long-term variations in oxygen content and saturation as an observed increase in temperature has led to a general decrease in oxygen solubility of water masses. Oxygen-dependent relationships based on field data and laboratory experiments were used to analyse the impact of the observed decrease in oxygen content on eastern Baltic cod (Gadus morhua) stock-specific processes (e.g. survival rates of eggs, settlement probability of juveniles, habitat utilization of spawning fish, age structure of successful spawners, food consumption rates of adult fish). The observed long-term decline in oxygen conditions in the Baltic Sea has had a seemingly generally negative impact on oxygen-related processes for the different life stages of eastern Baltic cod. Experimentally derived results of oxygen-driven processes were validated by field data.

Spatio-temporal variability in western Baltic cod early life stage survival mediated by egg buoyancy, hydrography and hydrodynamics. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 69: 1744–1752. To disentangle the effects of different drivers on recruitment variability of marine fish, a spatially and temporally explicit understanding of both the spawning stock size and the early life stage dynamics is required. The objectives of this study are to assess the transport of western Baltic cod early life stages as well as the variability in environmentally-mediated survival along drift routes in relation to both spatial (within and between different spawning areas) and temporal (interannual and seasonal) dynamics. A spatially and temporally highly-resolved biophysical model of the Baltic Sea was used to describe mortalities and survival success of eggs and yolk-sac larvae—represented by individual, virtual drifters—as predicted proportions of drifters that either died due to bottom contact or lethal temperatures, or that survived up to the end of the yolk-sac larval stage. The environmental conditions allowing survival of cod and yolk-sac larvae indicate that favourable conditions predominately occurred during the late spawning season, while minimum survival rates could be expected from January to March. The spatial analysis of different spawning areas revealed highest survival chances in the Kattegat, intermediate survival in the Great Belt, and only low survival in the Sound, Kiel Bay and Mecklenburg Bay.

Abstract Kraus, G., Pelletier, D., Dubreuil, J., Möllmann, C., Hinrichsen, H-H., Bastardie, F., Vermard, Y., and Mahévas, S. 2009. A model-based evaluation of Marine Protected Areas: the example of eastern Baltic cod (Gadus morhua callarias L.). – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 66: 109–121. The eastern Baltic cod stock collapsed as a consequence of climate-driven adverse hydrographic conditions and overfishing and has remained at historically low levels. Spatio-temporal fishing closures [Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)] have been implemented since 1995, to protect and restore the spawning stock. However, no signs of recovery have been observed yet, either suggesting that MPAs are an inappropriate management measure or pointing towards suboptimal closure design. We used the spatially explicit fishery simulation model ISIS-Fish to evaluate proposed and implemented fishery closures, combining an age-structured population module with a multifleet exploitation module and a management module in a single model environment. The model is parameterized based on (i) the large amount of biological knowledge available for cod and (ii) an analysis of existing spatially disaggregated fishery data. As the population dynamics of eastern Baltic cod depend strongly on the climate-driven hydrographic regime, we considered two production regimes of the stock. MPAs were only effective for stock recovery when they reduced overall fishing effort. The performance of MPAs needs to be evaluated relative to environmental regimes, especially for stocks facing strong environmental variability.

Abstract Hinrichsen, H-H., Kraus, G., Böttcher, U., and Köster, F. 2009. Identifying eastern Baltic cod nursery grounds using hydrodynamic modelling: knowledge for the design of Marine Protected Areas. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 66: 101–108. Knowledge of the spatial and temporal distribution of juvenile cod is essential to closing the life cycle in population dynamic models, and it is a prerequisite for the design of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) aiming at the protection of juveniles. In this study, we use a hydrodynamic model to examine the spatial distribution of eastern Baltic cod larvae and early juveniles. The transport patterns of the larvae spawned at the three major spawning grounds in the central Baltic Sea were investigated by drift model simulations for the period 1979–2004. We analysed potential habitats for their suitability for juvenile settlement, i.e. the change from pelagic to demersal life. The results revealed a clear dependence of the probability for successful settling on wind-induced drift of larval cod, which is controlled by the local atmospheric conditions over the Baltic Sea. Furthermore, we found evidence that the final destinations of juvenile cod drift routes are affected by decadal climate variability. Application of the methodology to MPA design is discussed, e.g. identifying the overlap of areas with a high probability of successful juvenile cod settlement and regions of high fishing effort in small-meshed fisheries targeting sprat and herring.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), such as ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD) are chronic conditions characterised by severe intestinal symptoms and other general symptoms, which impede daily functioning and affect the quality of life of patients. Understanding the significance of psychological factors in the disease development and therapy can improve the satisfaction with life of gastroenterological patients. The aim of the study was to analyse the impact of accepting the disease on the relation between an important personal resource, which is one’s self-efficacy and both satisfaction with life and components of the quality of life. Methods The study group consisted of 104 patients (N = 104), 58 women and 46 men suffering from IBS (35), UC (33) or CD (36). The average age equalled 32.56 years (SD = 11.04). The average duration of the disease was 8.5 years (SD = 6.9). The following research methods were used: the Generalised Self Efficacy Scale GSES (Schwarzer, Jerusalem, Juczynski), the Acceptance of Illness Scale AIS (Felton, Revenson, Hinrichsen, Polish adapt. by Juczynski), the Quality of Life SF-36v2 Questionnaire—the Polish version, the Satisfaction with Life Scale SWLS (Diener, Emmons, Larson, Griffin, Polish adapt. by Juczynski) and the author’s own questionnaire to collect the demographic data. Results The data were analysed using the independent sample t-test, chi-square test, Pearson correlation, regression analysis and mediation analysis. The study did not prove that the disease diagnosis (IBS, UC or CD) differed the level of satisfaction with life or the level of quality of life. Participants with IBS demonstrated a higher level of illness acceptance in comparison to IBD patients (p = 0.028). A strong positive correlation (p < 0.01) was observed between generalised self-efficacy and satisfaction with life—SWL (r = 0.37) and components of quality of life: lower perceived bodily pain—BP (r = 0.20), social role functioning—SF (r = 0.29) and mental health—MH (r = 0.35). Results pointed out that acceptance of illness mediated the relationship between generalised self-efficacy and SWL, BP, SF, and MH (β = 0.38 95% CI: 0.16–0.59; β = 0.25 95% CI: 0.004–0.73; β = 1.23 95% CI: 0.20–2.25; β = 1.18 95% CI: 0.46–1.90). Conclusion Psychological factor as acceptance of illness can be considered to be a resource which helps to cope with challenges posed by gastrointestinal disorders. Therefore, it is so significant to increase its level by applying psychotherapeutic methods tailored to the age and the needs of a patient.

The FISH analysis of CD138+ enriched cells showed the following changes: - Vysis LSI ATM/CEP 11: 3 r + 2 gr (40/209) - MetaSystems XL DLEU/TP53: 1 r + 2 gr (31/231) - MetaSystems XL IGH plus: 1 F (r/gr) + 1 r + 1 gr (35/229) and 2 r + 1 gr (39/229) - MetaSystems XL t(11;14): 2 r + 3 gr (27/224) and 3 F (r/gr) + 1 r (88/224) - MetaSystems XL t(14;16): 2 r + 3 gr (57/232) and 2 F (r/gr) + 1 r + 1 gr (51/232) Consequently, FISH analysis found a deletion in the region 13q14 (DLEU) in 13.4% of the interphases, a balanced translocation t(14;16)(q32;q23) in 22.0% of the interphases and a balanced translocation t(11;14)(q13;q32) in 39.3% of the interphases, as well as an altered chromosome 14 from an unbalanced translocation t(11;14)(q13;q32). The unbalanced translocation results in a loss of chromosome material from 14q32->14qter and a gain in chromosome material from 11q13->11qter (confirmed by gain of ATM (11q22.3)). In addition, it was shown that the 13q14 deletion is associated with the translocation t(14;16)(q32;q23) and that the translocation t(11;14)(q13;q32) represents an independent cell clone. Computed tomography of the skeletal system showed isolated small osteolyses in the skullcap (the differential diagnosis could also be the physiologically occurring Pacchionian granulations), and osteoporosis of the spine. Clear CRAB criteria (hypercalcemia, renal failure, anemia, myeloma typical osteolytic lesions) are not available. Since PNP constitutes a treatment indication outside the CRAB criteria, it was recommended the patient start treatment to slow the progression of PNP. In principle, bortezomib belongs to the standard repertoire of first-line treatment in patients ineligible for high-dose therapy and stem cell transplantation (among other factors age >75 years). It is however problematic that an adverse effect of bortezomib is to induce PNP. Thalidomide, another effective preparation of the first-line treatment of elderly patients, is also rarely used due to this. In the last few months, the patient was recommended therapy with an approved combination of lenalidomide and dexamethasone as first-line therapy, and treatment has now started. Abstract:
Abstract In 1986, Proinov published an explicit lower bound for the diaphony of finite and infinite sequences of points contained in the d−dimensional unit cube [Proinov, P. D.:On irregularities of distribution, C. R. Acad. Bulgare Sci. 39 (1986), no. 9, 31–34]. However, his widely cited paper does not contain the proof of this result but simply states that this will appear elsewhere. To the best of our knowledge, this proof was so far only available in a monograph of Proinov written in Bulgarian [Proinov, P. D.: Quantitative Theory of Uniform Distribution and Integral Approximation, University of Plovdiv, Bulgaria (2000)]. The first contribution of our paper is to give a self contained version of Proinov’s proof in English. Along the way, we improve the explicit asymptotic constants implementing recent, and corrected results of [Hinrichs, A.—Markhasin, L.: On lower bounds for the ℒ2 -discrepancy, J. Complexity 27 (2011), 127–132.] and [Hinrichs, A.—Larcher, G.: An improved lower bound for the ℒ2 -discrepancy, J. Complexity 34 (2016), 68–77]. (The corrections are due to a note in [Hinrichs, A.—Larcher, G. An improved lower bound for the ℒ2 -discrepancy, J. Complexity 34 (2016), 68–77].) Finally, as a main result, we use the method of Proinov to derive an explicit lower bound for the dyadic diaphony of finite and infinite sequences in a similar fashion.

Abstract:
Three lines of transgenic mice containing the human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) tax gene develop neurofibromas composed of perineural fibroblasts (S. H. Hinrichs, M. Nerenberg, R. K. Reynolds, G. Khoury, and G. Jay, Science 237:1340-1343, 1987; M. Nerenberg, S. H. Hinrichs, R. K. Reynolds, G. Khoury, and G. Jay, Science 237:1324-1327, 1987). Tumors and tumor cell lines derived from these mice produce neurite outgrowth from PC-12 cells and nerve growth factor (NGF), as determined by RNA (Northern) blot analysis and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. In vitro cotransfection studies demonstrate that Tax is able to trans activate the NGF promoter in NIH 3T3 fibroblast cells. The major cis-acting tax-responsive element in the NGF promoter (AGGGTGTGACGA) has 92% homology with a tax-responsive element contained within the 21-bp repeats of the HTLV-I long terminal repeat. The receptor for NGF is also expressed in the transgenic tumor cells, suggesting that Tax may activate an autocrine mechanism through the upregulation of NGF.

Abstract:
We compare typical properties of the hyperbolic and quasi-hyperbolic attractors with the properties of the particular attractor observed in the classical dry friction oscillator excited by external harmonic drive [Popp & Stelter, 1990a; Hinrichs et al., 1998; Oestreich et al., 1996]. Our analysis shows that the main common feature of these attractors is their structural stability (in spite of their chaotic nature), which is manifested by a low sensitivity of system dynamics and the structure of the phase-space for changes of parameters in differential equations.

Abstract:
Research on the English genitive (e.g. Rosenbach 2007: 154) reports increasing use of the s-variant. This has been explained as extension to inanimate possessors, a semantic shift (e.g. Hundt 1998; Rosenbach 2002), or due to the pressures of economy in journalism, a register change (Hinrichs & Szmrecsanyi 2007; Szmrecsanyi & Hinrichs 2008). The present work reports on a large-scale sociolinguistic investigation of the genitive in vernacular Canadian English using socially stratified corpora and individuals of all ages. The results show that human, prototypical possessors are 96 per cent s-genitive and non-humans are 95 per cent of-genitive. Within the small envelope where both forms are possible, we discover that variation patterns quite differently depending on animacy. For humans, use of the s-genitive is stable in apparent time and correlates with whether or not the possessor ends in a sibilant. In contrast, non-human collectives/organizations reveal an increasing use of s-genitives in apparent time and a favouring effect of short possessors, persistence (when an s-genitive has occurred recently in the previous discourse) and when the individual has a blue-collar job. Groups comprising humans (collectives and organizations), such as our church's youth group, and places that are possible locations for humans (countries, cities, etc.), as in Toronto's best restaurant, are the prime conduit for this change. These findings from vernacular speech confirm the extension of the s-genitive in inanimates by semantic extension.

Abstract:
A number r > 0 is called a rendezvous number for a metric space (M, d) if for any n ∈ ℕ and any x1,…xn ∈ M, there exists x ∈ M such that . A rendezvous number for a normed space X is a rendezvous number for its unit sphere. A surprising theorem due to O. Gross states that every finite dimensional normed space has one and only one average number, denoted by r (X). In a recent paper, A. Hinrichs solves a conjecture raised by R. Wolf. He proves that for any n-dimensional real normed space. In this paper, we prove the analogous inequality in the complex case for n ≥ 3.
