Identification of a Novel Tedizolid Resistance Mutation in rpoB of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus." Abstract:
Abstract Background Tedizolid (TDZ) is an oxazolidinone antimicrobial with broad-spectrum activity against Gram-positive bacteria including methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). Resistance to TDZ is uncommon but mutations in the 23S rRNA target as well as in the transferable rRNA methyltransferase gene cfr, which also mediate resistance to linezolid and chloramphenicol have been implicated. The objective of this study was to determine whether other TDZ resistance pathways exist in MRSA. Methods Using a well-characterized MRSA strain, N315, we selected for TDZ resistance by serial passage in escalating concentrations of TDZ in Mueller Hinton broth (MHB) starting with 0.5× the MIC. Once visible growth was achieved a sample of the broth was diluted 1:1,000 into fresh MHB with twice the previous concentration of TDZ until an isolate with an MIC of ≥4 mg/mL was recovered. This MIC was selected since it is 1 dilution above the breakpoint for resistance ≥2 mg/L). This isolate was subjected to whole genome sequencing (WGS) and MICs to other antimicrobials were assessed. Homology modeling was performed to evaluate the potential impact of the mutation on target protein function. Results After 10 days of serial passage we recovered a stable mutant with a TDZ MIC of 4 mg/L. WGS revealed a single nucleotide variant (A1345G) in the rpoB gene corresponding to an amino acid substitution at D449N. The following table and figure summarize the changes in drug susceptibility between the parent and evolved strain and reveals the location of the amino acid substitution relative to the TDZ binding site. Conclusion We have identified a novel mutation in the RNA polymerase gene, rpoB, that mediates oxazolidinone and chloramphenicol resistance. This variant lies outside of the rifampin resistance determinant clusters of rpoB that span from 1,384 to 1,464 and 1,543 to 1,590, and as expected did not affect rifampin susceptibility. The underlying molecular mechanism by which this single nucleotide variant confers TDZ resistance remains unclear but may involve transcriptional modulation by altered sigma factor binding. Abstract:
The article is devoted to the problem of outsidership in groups of younger and older adolescents. We assumed that there are personal qualities that distinguish outsiders from other students, which allows u s t o s peak o f o utsidership a s a s eparate g roup a nd p ersonal phenomenon. The study involved 246 students of Moscow schools of younger and older adolescents, 60 of whom took an outsider position in the group. To test the hypothesis were used: a personal questionnaire for adolescents HSPQ (R. Cattell), questionnaire Emin to determine the level of emotional intelligence (D.V. Lyusin), the technique of " Suggestibility " (O.E. Rybakov). To identify statistical differences, the Student's t-test and the Mann-Whitney Utest were used, p ≤ 0.05. The results of the study s howed that outsiders of adolescence are indeed characterized by a number of personal characteristics that distinguish them from their peers. Differences in personal characteristics of outsiders at different stages of adolescence have their own characteristics.

Abstract:
Graduates and employees of four institutions-the MOMM Cartel-dominate every science and practice organ of Division 17's governing body. Counseling psychologists from the other 60 academic programs (the OUTSIDERs) face numerous barriers to professional ascendancy. Six of 13 fellow nominees during the 1988-1989 year were MOMM members; none were rejected. Three OUTSIDERs were elected; four were rejected. Mean scholarly productivity for each group was 13, 21.3, and 19.7 Psyc LIT citations, respectively. The accepted OUTSIDERs were significantly more productive than the MOMMs; two of the four rejected OUTSIDERs ranked numbers one and two in scholarly productivity among all nominees. No relationship appeared between scholarship and fellow decisions; MOMM membership strongly predicted election to fellow status. Personal familiarity with the evaluators, rather than professional service, apparently accounts for these filings -a variant of the "Matthew Effect" discussed in the sociology-of-science literature Recommendations for reform are offered

Abstract:
Introduction: Red ginger (Zingiber officinale var. rubrum) is known as an antibacterial agent. Streptococcus pyogenes is the most common bacterial cause of pharyngitis in children and adults. Over the years, antibiotic resistance case is increasing. Therefore, further research of other substances to find an bactericidal or bacteriostatic agent is needed. The aim of this study is to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of Z. officinale var. rubrum against S. pyogenes. Methods: Serial dilution test of red ginger extract in Mueller hinton broth (8 concentrations of red ginger extract : 80%, 40%, 20%, 10%, 5%, 2,5%, 1,25%, and 0,625%) and positive control (1 ml bacterial suspension in Mueller hinton broth) was used to determine MIC. MBC was determined by culturing solutions from the previous dilution test into blood agar plate.lResults: MIC of red ginger extract against S. pyogenes could not be determined because the color of red ginger extract affected the turbidity of the dilution test result. MBC of red ginger extract against S. pyogenes was at concentration 20% of red ginger extract. Conclusion: Z. officinale var. rubrum showed antibacterial activity against S. pyogenes.

Abstract:
Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of ceftaroline against agents frequently isolated from respiratory tract and wound infections. Methodology: The study included a total of 250 strains isolated from various clinical specimens, among which were Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus dysagalactiae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catharralis. The bacteria were identified using the matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight method and conventional methods. The bacteria’s antibiotic susceptibility was tested using appropriate broth microdilution. Mueller-Hinton broth with 4% lysed horse blood, Haemophilus test medium broth, and Mueller-Hinton broth were used. Ceftaroline fosamil results at the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) were evaluated using Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) criteria. For quality assurance, E. coli ATCC 35218, S. aureus ATCC 29213, S. aureus ATCC 43300, S. pneumoniae ATCC 49619, H. influenzae ATCC 49766, H. influenzae ATCC 10211, and H. influenzae ATCC 49247 standard strains were used. Results: According to CLSI criteria, resistance was not detected in any strains. Due to the absence of CLSI criteria for M. catharralis, the susceptibility state for this bacterium was not evaluated. The various strains’ MIC50–MIC90 values were as follows: for S. pyogenes, 0.015–0.06; for S. agalactiae, 0.03–0.125; for S. dysagalactiae, 0.03–0.06; for S. pneumoniae, 0.06–0.125; for H. influenzae, 0.015–0.125; and for M. catharralis, 0.5–1. Conclusions: The results indicate that ceftaroline is quite effective against bacteria that are frequently isolated from respiratory tract and wound infections.

Abstract:
Ce mémoire de maîtrise propose une étude détaillée des répercussions sociales et psychologiques des évènements traumatiques sur le développement de l’enfant en utilisant trois Bildungsromane importants, The Catcher in the Rye de J.D. Salinger, The Outsiders de S.E. Hinton et The Perks of Being a Wallflower de Stephen Chbosky.
This thesis examines the psychological and social repercussions of trauma on a child’s maturation process using three landmark novels of the Bildungsroman genre, J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, and Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Grounding my analysis on the findings of trauma theorists Cathy Caruth, Shoshana Felman, Ronald Granofsky, and Dominick LaCapra, and psychiatrists Dori Laub and Judith Lewis Herman, I demonstrate that trauma can occupy two contradictory but inextricably linked functions in the maturation process, that of both hindering and catalyzing a child’s coming-of-age. I demonstrate that Holden Caulfield, Ponyboy Curtis, and Charlie all display behaviours that suggest the paralyzing nature of trauma and its initial ability to prevent the child from growing up. I then argue that trauma, or the acceptance of one’s traumatic past, has the potential to accelerate the maturation process. My study also highlights the importance of the testimonial process in the recovery from trauma and the character's ensuing maturity. Because of the omnipresence of testimony in young people’s literature, its ramifications and implications are explored in each chapter of this thesis. Through the use of close reading, I study each work independently, evaluate each character’s individual response to trauma, and establish the thematic vocabulary and the interlinks that allow a conversation between the three novels. Although the studied works propose different types of traumatic negotiation and response, each novel is dialogically linked with the other. This thesis offers new readings of each novel, while establishing insightful comparisons between the three works. The intent of this thesis is therefore to contribute to the assessment of each narrative and to a general understanding of the role of trauma in young people’s literature.

In view of a field research carried out by a team connected to the universe of body modification, it is possible to discern some uses and meanings linked to these forms of body interventions. Body modification or body change is part of the circuit of piercings and tattoos, although they are socially less thinned and more extreme, like scarifications, subcutaneous implants, bifurcated tongues, surfaces and body suspensions. The aim of this paper is to cast an anthropological glance on these practices, joining at the same context all the subjects involved with these techniques, placing them inside the same relational focus and capturing their journeys and trajectories. The discussions are concentrated on the notion of body building and urban life style. Ideas as personal distinctness and prestige imitation are also present in this universe, as well as matters attached to genre, pleasure, art, and to the so-called alternative circuit . This way, the ethnography so far presented here, reveals the complex and contemporaneous character of these practices of body markings in which the body appears as the central element in the experiences of the subjects of this study

Abstract:
This paper explores two important topics among the political parties and party system literature in Peru: The strength and stability of the political party system in the 80’s and the decade of the 90’s, better known as the «decade of the antipolitics». The contrast between the literature reviewed and the quantitative data from the 7 Municipal Elections, that took place among this time period, attempts to find if this phenomena occurred also at the subnational level. In the decade of the 80’s, the political party system stayed stable with rule of the four most important political parties (APRA, Acción Popular, Izquierda Unida y PPC); however, individually these political parties did not have the same performance. In the decade of the 90’s, the concept «in- dependent» did not fit equally among all the cases and together with the fujimorismo depicted the political scenario of the 90’s.

Abstract:
In a Famous Essay ‘Numismatics and History’, A. H. M. Jones suggested that Roman imperial coin types could be compared to the designs on modern postage stamps. The purpose of this analogy was to demonstrate the relative insignificance of types and legends for the study of imperial policy. In doing so, however, he addressed a fundamental problem which is of particular relevance here: What are the meaning(s) of coin types, and who chose the designs? Jones’s comparison was perhaps offered with a slight hint of facetiousness, as a way of debunking the notion that imperial history could be reconstructed from the coin designs alone, yet the analogy does have some merit when considering the meanings of types on Roman provincial coins. These do indeed depict ‘famous men of the country concerned, its artistic monuments . . . fairs . . . or . . . great events in national history’, among other things. The analogy is not intended to mean that the designs were empty or frivolous, or that people could not construct a sense of identity from them. This chapter examines some of the coin types of cities in Syria, to show that not only the more unusual types, but also some of the designs that we might consider generic could have been seen as specific and generated a sense of identity among members of the issuing community. Whether individuals within a community found the same meanings in the designs is a question addressed here. What people understood is crucial to any search for identities. It is suggested that whilst people from outside the community might have understood the types, these designs were not generally intended to convey ‘information’ to outsiders. Some of the types may remain unexplained today because they were perhaps equally obscure to many non-citizens in antiquity. However, unless the issuing authorities and the audience can be clearly identified it will be very difficult to say very much about how the coin types generated a sense of identity, and what sort of identities were generated.

Abstract:
This chapter sets out the vicarious liability of partners for the various forms of partnership liability to third parties. The liability for contracts is based on the concepts of agency and the authority of the partner(s) making the contract, in particular the scope of the implied or usual authority of a partner to bind the other partners. The exception to the undisclosed principal rule is carefully examined. The vicarious liability for torts and crimes committed by a partner is examined, including the apparent paradox of the non-existent legal person of the firm being subject to prosecution. The liability for breaches of equitable liabilities relating to misapplications by a partner is synthesised, including knowing receipt and dishonest assistance in a breach of trust. Then the chapter considers the nature of such liabilities and finally, the effect of a change of partners on such liabilities on both the outgoing and incoming partners.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the affective pull that Paris exerted upon modernist writers and artists, attracting outsiders from around the globe to experience its cultural institutions and openness to creative experimentation. The chapter first discusses the writers T. S. Eliot, Guillaume Apollinaire, and Blaise Cendrars as ‘outsider-insiders’ (in Peter Gay’s terms), figures who come to the city as outsiders but who, by virtue of status or identity, are able to function as insiders within its cultural geography. The second group of writers discusses include Hope Mirrlees (in her poem Paris), Jean Rhys (in novels such as After Leaving Mr Mackenzie and Good Morning, Midnight), and Gwendolyn Bennett (in her story ‘Wedding Day’), female modernists who remain marked as outsiders in the city. The chapter discusses how all of these writers engaged affectively with various aspects of the technological modernity of Paris, including features such as the Eiffel Tower, café culture, hotel rooms, and the Grands Boulevards.

Abstract:
This essay examines the epilogue of Revelation (22:8-21) as an intervention for new imaginations of, and actions toward, a new heaven and new earth that can be realized in the present. It names the ways that Revelation (indeed, the Bible) is used to make outsiders of queer people. More importantly it suggests that the author/narrator John is not the only one who can be filled with the spirit on the Lord(e)’s day with something to say to those “with ears to hear.” The particular “queer time and place” of this investigation occurs at the intersection of queers of color critique, theories of queer temporality, and Sankofa—the Akan concept that we take what is beneficial from the past in order to work toward a more pleasurable future. Composite sketches of the lives of queer folks in the African Diaspora are gathered to create a “deep archive” (following Judith Halberstam) from which Muñoz’s call for new visions of a utopian “then and there” can be articulated in resistance to their apocalyptic “here and now.” Consequently, a re-vision of the death-dealing epilogue can become a life-restoring prologue toward the enactment of Africana queer utopian futures outside of apocalyptic Christo-heteronormativity.

Abstract:
