Roy, Aurélie. "Surviving childhood : trauma and maturation in J.D. Salinger's "The catcher in the Rye", S.E. Hinton's "The outsiders", and Stephen Chbosky's "The perks of being a wallflower"." Master's thesis, Université Laval, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11794/28334.
Full textThis thesis examines the psychological and social repercussions of trauma on a child’s maturation process using three landmark novels of the Bildungsroman genre, J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, and Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Grounding my analysis on the findings of trauma theorists Cathy Caruth, Shoshana Felman, Ronald Granofsky, and Dominick LaCapra, and psychiatrists Dori Laub and Judith Lewis Herman, I demonstrate that trauma can occupy two contradictory but inextricably linked functions in the maturation process, that of both hindering and catalyzing a child’s coming-of-age. I demonstrate that Holden Caulfield, Ponyboy Curtis, and Charlie all display behaviours that suggest the paralyzing nature of trauma and its initial ability to prevent the child from growing up. I then argue that trauma, or the acceptance of one’s traumatic past, has the potential to accelerate the maturation process. My study also highlights the importance of the testimonial process in the recovery from trauma and the character's ensuing maturity. Because of the omnipresence of testimony in young people’s literature, its ramifications and implications are explored in each chapter of this thesis. Through the use of close reading, I study each work independently, evaluate each character’s individual response to trauma, and establish the thematic vocabulary and the interlinks that allow a conversation between the three novels. Although the studied works propose different types of traumatic negotiation and response, each novel is dialogically linked with the other. This thesis offers new readings of each novel, while establishing insightful comparisons between the three works. The intent of this thesis is therefore to contribute to the assessment of each narrative and to a general understanding of the role of trauma in young people’s literature.

Full textSince the end of XIth century, christian expeditions in the East have inspired many literary works, especially in France, where such movement started early and lasted a long time. It is usually spoken about "crusade literature"; yet, this is a deceptive and anachronous term: the word "crusade" appears in the XVth century only. More than an ideology, a mixture of attraction and fascination is being expressed, since pope Urban's call in Clermont (1396), until the Nicopolis battle (1396). Therefore, instead of "crusade", we shall speak of tropism - the tropism of Jerusalem. People (pilgrims, travellers, "crusaders") are concerned, and, above all, characters (knights, lords and kings): both have a common destination, where a mission and a destiny can be completed. Within the "crusade literature", a group of texts, expressing this "movement towards", can be discriminated. All have been written in the christian expeditions' wake, which they glorify and exalt in return. They share a number of themes, motives, formulations, and therefore belong to a mere "rhetoric of the crusades". To define its processes and goals is the purpose of our work

Full textThis theses is a study of the relationship between knowledge and wisdom according to two educational thinkers : the Russian writer L. N. Tolstoy (1828-1910) and the Danish pastor N. F. S. Grundtvig (1783-1872). It presents the pedagogical ideas of each author as well as their philosophical and religious standpoints. Then it brings them together in order to deepen their respective conception of knowledge and wisdom, and determine what links they establish between the two concepts from the point of view of education. It transpires that wisdom comes first for Tolstoy ; it serves as the basis to define the usefulness of knowledge and to search for the application of this knowledge in action. For Grundtvig on the other hand, fundamental wisdom, knowledge and active wisdom are at the very heart of educational practice. Seemingly divergent these concepts reflect not only the way of thinking of each author but also the context in which they were conceived. They come together at a fundamental level however, that of their vision of humanity on which their concepts are founded, a vision recognising the intrinsic value in human life rather than one that depends on the development of intellect alone. This analysis, together with the importance given by each author to the usage of language and to the principle of interrelatedness, opens ways of reflecting on the possibility of a relationship between knowledge and wisdom in education today

Full textThe ancient texts, either geographical or not, offer us many cases of confusions between India and Ethiopia i. E. Anything relating to Africa is often named Indian and inversely. These many confusions whose a systematic inventory has been established appear in different fields: geography, history, mythology, fauna, flora and mineralogy. A careful study of all these texts allows us to understand much better the nature of this phenomenon. There is not a simple kind of confusion and the confusion is rarely a simple error. Particularly, it seems that Greek and roman people, contrary to the moderns, did not feel the confusion between India and Ethiopia as a problem. In others respects, this is not an uniform phenomenon. It has developed during the antiquity different evolutions, but it has been never really flagged. This analysis is completed with a thorough study of the texts written by authors who were inclined, more than others, to make confusions. The research of the causes of this phenomenon leads us to several directions. The Mesopotamian influence (the two meluhha) does not seem to be proved, but the Greek and roman way of thinking has led an important part. The geographical knowledge during the antiquity is a cause of confusion as well as the Indian Ocean trade which has fostered it. Finally, in certain cases, this phenomenon does not find its explanation in general causes but in individual causes which originates often in literature
Barbé, Philippe. "W. S. Burroughs : individualisme, révolution et post-modernisme." Paris 10, 1994. http://www.theses.fr/1994PA100128.
Full textThis dissertation presents a sociological reading of the literary works written by W. S. Burroughs between junky in 1953 and interzone in 1989 this burroughsian literature is useful because it perfectly conveys the tension between the remain s of a fragmented modernity which is still dominant and the more and more numerous hypothesis and references which insis t on postmodern aesthetic thought. First, we note in the burroughsian narrative the presence of socio-political and cultural themes directly descending from modern thought (the revolution, the refusal of the alienation of montind from t he power of the state and from the forces of rationalization). Secondly, we discover in the burroughsian works the paradoxal presence of themes which one called postmodern such as the dissolution of identities in ultra-individualism and the growing massification of societies as well as the end and the surpassing of politicsand history. While the postmodern and schizophrenic logic could put the individual into orbit out of the social world, the burroughsian literature shows us a possible way which could lead to a new and minimal postmodern sociality and individuality
