Abstract:
This article aims to shed light on the theoretical contributions of the historian Otto Hintze to the intellectual context experienced by German historical science in the late nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century. To do so, I proceed from the assumption that Hintze’s positions were constituted as an attempt to answer the crisis of historicism: namely, the collapse of trust in the Western-centered concept of history in modern times. From that previous definition, I argue that his individual ethics derived from what I describe as his two main theoretical contributions, developed to overcome such a crisis: the desacralization of modern state politics and his scientific reconceptualization of historicism. Finally, I claim that both the crisis of historicism itself and the responses offered by Hintze to overcome it remain largely present to reflect on some of the challenges professional historiography still faces in the twenty-first century.

Has Ulrich Hintze succeeded in producing a "general political theory"? At the least, the author has provided a useful tour of the thought-provoking work of thinkers such as Hermann Heller, Hermann Schmitz, and Ludwig von Mises. Along the way, Hintze makes extensive use of Mises to create a theory of the state, taking aim at anarcho-capitalists.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the introduction to his 1915 book Die Hohenzollern und ihr Werk, Otto Hintze ruefully quoted an Englishman's observation that, “Prussian history is endlessly boring because it speaks so much of war and so little of revolution.” As the “Great War” entered its second year, and with Germany's hopes for a quick and decisive victory fading, Hintze saw history repeating itself. Like Frederick the Great's Prussia, he wrote, “The German Reich, under a Hohenzollern Kaiser, [now] battles for its existence against a world of enemies.” Since the beginning of the war, Entente propaganda had mobilized the home front by depicting the war as an epochal struggle against the enemy of all civilized men: the savage “Hun,” the jack-booted, spike-helmeted despoiler of innocent Belgium. The crudity of this propaganda caricature aside, its power to persuade nevertheless drew on a widespread conviction that the story of war constituted the core of German history and that the disease of “militarism” was a peculiarly German deformation of the national psyche. In response to the censure of their nation's enemies, the German intellectuals rejected that diagnosis while defending the role war had played in their nation's history. Published in the Kölnische Zeitung on October 4, 1914, the hastily drafted manifesto “To the Civilized World!” was endorsed (if not read) by ninety-three of the Second Reich's most prominent scholars, scientists, philosophers, and theologians, including Peter Behrens, Lujo Brentano, Adolph von Harnack, Max Lenz, and Gustav von Schmoller. They vehemently repudiated the distortion of Germany's history: “Were it not for German militarism, German civilization would long since have been extirpated.” “The word militarism,” the liberal jurist Gerhard Anschütz defiantly declared in 1915, “which is being used throughout the world as a swear word against us, let it be for us a badge of honor.” As Hintze, Anschütz, and their contemporaries understood the course of German unification (and Germany's rise as a great power under Prussian leadership), the modern German nation-state owed its very existence to what Hintze called “the monarchical-military factor.” If we are to advance our understanding of how a nationalist discourse obsessed with foreign and domestic threats supported a foreign policy that ignited two world wars in the space of twenty-five years, we must be prepared, I believe, to re-think the “Sonderweg thesis,” not in its relation to the putative immaturity of German liberalism or an atavistic predilection for autocratic rule, but as it was rooted in German military culture. The books under discussion in this essay reframe the militarism/“Sonderweg” debate by examining the unique connection between modern German visions of the nation and the waging of war as revealed in the experience of the First World War. Representing the maturation of the new intellectual and cultural history of war, they pose two fundamental questions: What kind of war did the Second Reich's military, political, and intellectual leadership envision that would “complete” the German nation? And how did they define Germany's enemies?

Abstract:
Recent attempts to relate theologies and belief systems to psychological concepts and research are based on three basic methodologies: (a) Documenting a parallel between psychological and theological concerns, (b) using religious belief and behavior as variables in basic psychological research, (c) suggesting theological reality as part of the process that accounts for religious experience. These fundamental approaches underlie both the articles in the present issue (Donahue, 1989; Hertel, 1989; Hood, 1989; Spilka & Bridges, 1989; Williams, Taylor, & Hintze, 1989) and earlier attempts at integration. Abstract:
AbstractMatMan is a program for performing a variety of ethological analyses of frequency (interaction) matrices and transition matrices. These analyses include linear hierarchy indices for dominance matrices (APPLEBY, 1983), reorganization of a dominance matrix such that the subjects are in rank order, matrix correlation methods such as Mantel's test (MANTEL, 1967) and rowwise matrix correlation (DE VRIES, 1993), methods based on information theory (STEINBERG, 1977), and the calculation of expected and residual values in transition matrices with defined or undefined diagonal. In addition, MatMan offers some useful options for manipulating matrices. Import of matrices from The Observer (NOLDUS, 1991) and SAS is, within certain limitations, possible. Export of matrices is possible to the programs CORAN (1985), Vegrow (FRESCO, 1989), NCSS (HINTZE, 1987), SAS and SPSSPC.

Abstract:
Systematic comparison was alien to the historicist paradigm which dominated historical research and literature in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, particularly in Germany. Anyone aiming to reconstruct historical phenomena as individual events, study them under the aspect of ”development” and understand them in their context would not be interested in systematic identification of similarities and differences or in their explanation. Narrative and comparison were and are opposites. Without conceptual explanation and theoretical input, historical comparison is not possible. Because German historians were strongly influenced by the historicist paradigm until well into the second third of the twentieth century, systematic comparison did not play a major role in their work. In essence it was left to important outsiders like Otto Hintze and historically oriented sociologists like Max Weber.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Panisaspis n. gen. is a clade of pliomerid trilobites from the Tulean and Blackhillsian stages (Floian) of the Great Basin. It includes Protopliomerops? quattuor Hintze, 1953, and ten new species, six of which are formally named: Panisaspis millardensis (type species), P. sevierensis, P. deltaensis, P. rancherensis, P. topscityensis, and P. loganensis. Four new species are not well enough known for formal naming and are described in open nomenclature. All species are Tulean in age except for P. millardensis, which is earliest Blackhillsian. Synapomorphies of Panisaspis include a short, nearly semicircular anterior border; small L1; large genal spines; a rounded, ovoid hypostomal border; elongated third pygidial spines; and a large, triangular terminal piece with distinct pitted impressions. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that P. millardensis and P. sevierensis are sister taxa, and that P. deltaensis, P. rancherensis, P. topscityensis, P. quattuor, and P. loganensis are successive sister species. The group may be sister to Ibexaspis Přibyl and Vaněk in Přibyl et al., 1985.

Abstract:
Abstract. On the night of 4 March 2001, at Entre-os-Rios (Northern Portugal), the Hintze Ribeiro centennial bridge collapsed killing 59 people traveling in a bus and three cars that were crossing the Douro River. According to the national authorities, the collapse was due to two decades of uncontrolled sand extraction which compromised the stability of the bridge's pillars, together with underestimating the warnings from divers and technicians. In this work we do not intend to corroborate or contradict the official version of the accident's causes, but only demonstrate the potential of Multi-Temporal Interferometric techniques for detection and monitoring of deformations in structures such as bridges, and consequently the usefulness of the derived information in some type of early warning system to help prevent new catastrophic events. Based on the analysis of 52 ERS-1/2 covering the period from May 1995 to the fatal occurrence, we were able to detect significant movements, reaching rates of 20 mm yr−1, in the section of the bridge that fell into the Douro River, which are obvious signs of the bridge's instability. These promising results demonstrate that with the new high-resolution synthetic aperture radar satellite scenes it is possible to develop interferometric based methodologies for structural health monitoring.

Abstract:
The Middle Ordovician bathyurid trilobite Pseudoolenoides Hintze has been treated in only a small handful of papers andfew of its species have been adequately known. Here we revise all previously known species on the basis of new materialand illustrations, and describe four new species, three of which are formally named. The genus now comprises 10 species, nine of which are formally named. Five of these are Dapingian and five are early Darriwilian in age. Cladistic parsimonyanalysis of the nine named species results in a generally well supported hypothesis of relationship which is fully congruentwith stratigraphic order. A particularly well supported subclade (11 unreversed synapomorphies and 100% bootstrap sup-port in 10,000 pseudoreplicates) consists of six species, including the type, which are likely a product of neotenic paedo-morphosis. Three other species are resolved as successive sister taxa to this derived clade. A new trilobite zonationrecently proposed for the Tulean and Blackhillsian stages (Lower Ordovician) is extended through Middle Ordovician(Dapingian and lower Darriwilian) rocks in western Laurentia. New species are P. pogonipensis (Dapingian; Pseudoole-noides dilectus Zone) and P. fossilmountainensis (lower Darriwilian; P. fossilmountainensis Zone), both from the Kanosh Formation of western Utah, and P. oilcreekensis (lower Darriwilian) from the Oil Creek Formation of Oklahoma.

This Isoteloides–Goniotelina–Ribeiria assemblage is characterized by brachiopods Finkelnburgia armanda (Billings) and Finkelnburgia cullisoni Ulrich and Cooper, molluscs Ribeiria calcifera Billings, "Maclurites" affinis (Billings), and Ceratopea canadensis (Billings), and trilobites Isoteloides canalis (Whitfield), Isoteloides peri Fortey, Bolbocephalus convexus (Billings), Goniotelina subrectus (Bradley), Strigigenalis caudata (Billings), and Hystricurus conicus (Billings). Precise correlation of this lower Beauharnois megafauna is with the Strigigenalis caudata Zone of the Catoche Formation, Cassinian Stage, of western Newfoundland, the Oxford Formation of southeastern Ontario, the Fort Cassin Formation, Cassinian Stage, Canadian Series of New York–Vermont, and the Ross–Hintze trilobite Zone G2 of Utah, Upper Ibexian Series (Tulean Stage). Conodonts include Acodus comptus (Branson and Mehl), Acodus delicatus (Branson and Mehl), Colaptoconus emarginatus (Barnes and Tuke), Colaptoconus quadraplicatus (Branson and Mehl), Scolopodus subrex Ji and Barnes, Drepanoistodus angulensis (Harris), and Oepikodus communis (Ethington and Clark). This fauna corresponds to the Oepikodus communis–"Microzarkodina" marathonensis Zone, which has its lowest limit above the middle of Zone G2 in the Ibex area of Utah. In western Newfoundland, the fauna correlates with the Oepikodus communis – Protoprioniodus simplicissimus Assemblage Zone of the Catoche Formation, and the Prioniodus elegans and Oepikodus evae zones in the Cow Head Group.

Abstract:

Abstract:
We have previously reported that adenoviral-mediated delivery of cytochrome P-450 (CYP) 4A2, which catalyzes the synthesis of 20-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (20-HETE), results in endothelial dysfunction and hypertension in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats (Wang JS, Singh H, Zhang F, Ishizuka T, Deng H, Kemp R, Wolin MS, Hintze TH, Abraham NG, Nasjletti A, Laniado-Schwartzman M. Circ Res 98: 962–969, 2006). In this study, we targeted the vascular endothelium by using a lentivirus construct expressing CYP4A2 under the control of the endothelium-specific promoter VE-cadherin (VECAD-4A2) and examined the effect of long-term CYP4A2 overexpression on blood pressure and kidney function in SD rats. A bolus injection of VECAD-4A2 increased blood pressure ( P < 0.001) by 26, 36, and 30 mmHg 10, 20, and 30 days postinjection, respectively. Arteries from VECAD-4A2-transduced rats produced increased levels of 20-HETE ( P < 0.01), expressed lower levels of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and phosphorylated eNOS (p-eNOS) ( P < 0.05), generated higher levels of superoxide anion, and displayed decreased relaxing responsiveness to acetylcholine ( P < 0.05). Proteinuria increased by twofold in VECAD-4A2-transduced rats compared with controls. Treatment of VECAD-4A2-transduced rats with HET0016, an inhibitor of 20-HETE biosynthesis, not only attenuated the increase in blood pressure ( P < 0.05) but also improved vascular function (acetylcholine-induced relaxations) and reduced plasma creatinine and proteinuria. HET0016 treatment decreased oxidative stress and increased the phosphorylated state of key proteins that regulate endothelial function, including eNOS, AKT, and AMPK. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that augmentation of vascular endothelial 20-HETE levels results in hypertension, endothelial dysfunction, and renal injury, which is offset by HET0016 through a reduction in vascular 20-HETE coupled with a lessening of oxidative stress and the amplification of pAKT, pAMPK, and p-eNOS levels leading to normalization of endothelial responses.
