Abstract:
AbstractSoviet hippies were in many ways a paradoxical phenomenon. They imitated an ideal that was shaped by American realities in a Soviet world. They were anti-Soviet, yet they professed an apolitical life style. This article proposes that rather than looking at the Soviet hippies with ideology in mind it is more fruitful to consider them an emotional community whose ‘emotional style’ differed from the Soviet mainstream and ultimately proved a formidable challenge to the Soviet system. The article investigates several exterior markers of Soviet hippie culture, which formed and reflected the ‘emotional style’ of the Soviet hippies such as their creed of love and peace, their enjoyment of rock music and the significance of hippie fashion. Drawing on interviews with contemporary witnesses from the Soviet hippie scene particular attention is given to the new rhetoric hippies employed to describe emotions particular to their style of life, to the way the practice of these emotions differed from the official Soviet emotional codex and to the nexus that linked the vocabulary and practice of emotions with specific items, sites, rituals and attributes. The article concludes that, while Soviet hippies remained a subculture, their style, including their ‘emotional style’ proved very durable and capable of expansion into the mainstream, ultimately surviving the Soviet system and its emotional norms.

Abstract:
The study on the hippies is abundant in numbers but not many of them study the disposition and identification of the hippies during the 1960s and its aftermath. Pierre Bourdieu’s theory on cultural practice, theory of hybridity, and globalization are used in this research to investigate the disposition and trans-nationality of the hippies in order to search for their universal identity. A Transnational American Studies approach is implemented to cover the following issue: (1) the socio-cultural disposition of the hippies in the 1960s, (2) the influence of European movement to the American Hippies, (3) the cultural hybridity of the hippies in relation with India, and (4) the similarities of the hippies and the reasons behind it. This research used library research and document analysis method in gathering the data whereas descriptive analysis approach is also used to analyze the data. The United States of America, India and Germany are the three countries being studied in relation to the hippies in the 1960s. The finding shows similar dispositions or background among the hippies in some countries being studied as well as some similarities and differences in the cultural practices of the hippies in the countries being studied. This shows the transnationality of the hippie’s identity and the influence of hybridity and globalization which causes the shifting of ideology and cultural practices of the hippies in its developments. Keywords: hippies, identity, Pierre Bourdieu, habitus, hybridity, globalization, TransnationalAmerican Studies

Abstract:
This article looks at an important interface between the small community of Soviet hippies and Soviet authorities: the politics of madness. Like dissidents, hippies often found themselves forcefully sequestered in psychiatric institutions. Yet an account of state repression against colourful, innocent flower children does not give justice to the complicated power games that were fought on the battlefield of craziness. Hippies used the ease with which diagnoses of schizophrenia were handed out to obtain exemption from the army. They embraced and fostered the label ‘crazy', subverting official actions through absolute acceptance rather than resistance. At the same time, they feared the loss of control that came with psychiatric treatment, yet re-invented their often traumatic experiences into a marker of their identity. The relationship between hippies and Soviet psychiatry reflects the multi-layered entanglement, which bound the Soviet system with one of its most unruly subjects. Hippie politics of craziness defy easy classification in conformism and dissent, instead highlighting the way in which a group at the margins of society made use of the political environment they lived in, subverting and succumbing to it at the same time.

Abstract:
Microporosity in both HIPped and non-HIPped unmodified aluminum cast alloy A356-T6 was quantified metallographically in terms of its area, area percentage, length, sphericity and perimeter. In the studied materials, the secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) values vary from 82μm to 96μm for both the HIPped and the non-HIPped castings. HIPping process significantly reduces porosity area fraction and pore sizes. The maximum area fraction of porosity and maximum pore area of the non-HIPped specimens are increased with increasing SDAS.

Abstract:
Cast aluminium alloy 354 has become an important industrial material owing to its excellent mechanical properties and good castability. It finds widespread use in the manufacture of compressor wheel castings. Castings have been studied since long and different approaches have been attempted to improve their quality. One such approach is Hot Iso-static Pressing (Hipping). This paper studies the effect of Hipping on the strength, ductility, strain energy density W and quality rating Qo of the alloy 354. The study shows that Hipped samples have better % elongation to fracture, higher W and Qo values as compared to non-Hipped samples. This behavior is consistent across different aging conditions of the alloy. Hipping also results in a reduction in scatter of ultimate tensile strength of 354, thus making it valuable to industries that demand high material consistency.

Abstract:
The effect of HIPping on the mechanical properties and microstructure of a cast Ti-6Cr-5Mo-5V-4Al alloy have been investigated. In the cast condition, the alloy predominantly consists of coarse β grains. In comparison to the HIPped samples, it exhibits poor mechanical properties, in particular low ductility, due to large amounts of remnant porosity. HIPping at 740°C substantially reduces the amount and size of porosity, while HIPping at 820°C and 900°C virtually eliminates all porosity, significantly improving the mechanical properties.

Abstract:
As an art, literature and film offer ways of seeing and feeling new things without having to experience them ourselves. They can also function in society as a means of both criticizing and affirming cultural values, as well as describing historical events throughout the years. Thus, this study aims to explore representations of social threats posed by the hippies toward American society in the late 1960s as depicted in the film ‘Bad Times at the El Royale’. Besides, this study also aims to investigate the solutions performed by the rest of the American population in overcoming the threats as demonstrated in the film. The data of this study are the utterances and scenes reflecting the social threats and solutions portrayed in this film. The method of this study was qualitative methods. Results show that the social threats posed by the hippies are determined through the contrast between the American values and the hippie values as depicted in the film, while the solutions are interpreted based on what actually happened according to history.

Abstract:
Fe -based bulk amorphous rods of 3 mm in diameter and a composition of Fe 41 Cr 15 Mo 14 C 15 B 6 Y 2 Co 7 were produced by copper mold casting. The as-cast amorphous rods contain a small (2%) fraction of pores. To close the pores, samples cut from the amorphous rods were hot isostatically pressed (hipped) at 863 K, which is in the supercooled liquid temperature range between the glass transition temperature and the crystallization temperature of the amorphous phase, and under a pressure of 200 Mpa. Microstructure examination of the hipped samples shows that hipping results in an increase of the density of the samples from 7.9 g/cm3 to 8.0 g/cm3, and a decrease of the porosity level from 2% to 1%, and that a very small fraction of unknown crystalline phase form. As a result of these microstructure change caused by hipping, the average room temperature compressive fracture strength of the bulk metallic glass (BMG) decrease from 3500 Mpa to 3000 MPa, while the strain to fracture changes little from 1.5% to 1.4%. The mechanisms of the effect of hipping on microstructure and mechanical properties of the Fe -based BMG are discussed.

Abstract:
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Americans encountered an unexpected group of people who, at first sight, seemed unreal: Hasidic hippies. Conceiving of Hasidic Judaism as being incompatible with the spirit of the era and of hippie culture as being far removed from the Jewish tradition, most Jews could not comprehend how anyone could try to amalgamate two such opposing cultures. Many of the young Hasidic hippies were affiliated with or influenced by the House of Love and Prayer (HLP), a Jewish outreach center that operated in San Francisco between 1967 and 1977 and promoted the mixture of traditional Hasidic Judaism with the counter-culture. It represented a new generation in American religious life: the baby boomers, with their spiritual journeys and cultural preferences, which included attempts to unite religious traditions and cultural trends that just a few years earlier had seemed too different to bridge. The HLP promoted the return to tradition and the embracing of the mystical and supernatural elements of Judaism. Together with other groups that emerged in the late 1960s and 1970s, the HLP helped bring about a revolution in the practicing of the Jewish tradition, one that gave expression to the style and values of the Jewish members of the counterculture.

Ashton-Griffiths, Roger. "'Paul Scott's Hippie' and Hanging On." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2015. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/59221/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis consists of a critical essay examining the evolution of genre and aesthetic in English fiction about South Asia, and a novel about a family of Sri Lankans settled in England. In the essay I question how a contemporary English novelist can place himself amongst the cohort of those earlier writers who have written about South Asia, since the relationship between the former colonists and colonised has changed so greatly. I demonstrate that generic elements were established in the earliest examples of this fiction, which remained notably constant throughout, even up to the late work of Paul Scott. However, I show that the aesthetic attending this Anglo-Indian genre begins with an affirmation of the benefit to the subcontinent which the colonial project might bring and ends with a repudiation of that idea. I seek to break new ground by arguing that the repudiation is so unequivocal in the work of Scott and others that this fiction comes to express an aesthetic of apology. I argue that Scott recognises that it has become possible no longer to write within the Anglo-Indian genre, and that his final novel, Staying On, has evolved into the Commonwealth genre. My novel, Hanging On, is an echo of Scott's last novel. It examines the life of a man who wishes to remain more-or-less British, rather than become independently Sri Lankan, and the legacy of his position as it filters down through the generations of his family in Luton. Cultural difference is now the prime source of conflict, rather than political power, and it aims to demonstrate that cultural hybridity is the paradoxical consequence of the racial rigidity which accompanied the colonial project to its termination.

This Statement of Purpose does not give a history of hip-hop or hip-hop poetry but rather how this particular poet fits into the current phase of hip-hop and performance poetry. In it, I discuss and explain the new pro-working class hip-hop performance poetic. This includes extensive discussion of how rap poetry conveys meaning through sound. Also discussed is the socioeconomic context for the suburban southwestern topics found in the manuscript. This statement is a parallel piece to the manuscript itself in that it explains a brown kid from San Bernardino’s journey of connecting words and music for purposes of personal expression and potentially the betterment of his community. This statement also discusses my aesthetic beliefs and preferences as a sound poet with a background in performance and music.

Abstract : "To make a movie about our lives": In 1981 this was the idea of a group of young film lovers when they put together ideas about their teenage years in the 1970s with a Super-8 camera to release the feature film "Deu pra ti, anos setenta" in Porto Alegre. The film would become a local hit due to its proposition of telling the memoirs of a decade through the eyes of the middle-class youth of that city. In the following year, the same team would release "Coisa na Roda", a feature film in the same aesthetic format that would focus on the survival possibilities of the dreams of four young people who lived in an urban community in Porto Alegre: a flat where everything was shared and discussed. Both works meant the beginning of a new type of discourse to the city: a young and countercultural one, which was eminently affirmative of the urban scene. This dissertation will take into account the fact that both works constitute, together, a possibility of thought about the urban space: a thought that articulated several distinctive ideas, specific to the social and political circumstances of the times where they were produced, but also of the cultural background that its producers carried with them. With the tools available to them, they recreated their lives through video, covering them with meaning while creating an image of Porto Alegre: a city seen through Super-8, open to be signified with memories and quotations and to be both the stage and the object to the dreams of film making.

Mercer, Kevin. "The farm a hippie commune as a countercultural diaspora." Honors in the Major Thesis, University of Central Florida, 2012. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETH/id/587.

Full text
Abstract:
Counterculture history is often divided, with a focus on either the turbulent 1960s or the "back to the land" exodus of the 1970s. A study of Stephen Gaskin and his followers' founding of The Farm, a rural commune near Summertown, Tennessee, provides a unique insight into the commonalities and connections of these two periods. It will be the aim of this thesis to weave the separate narratives of this demographic into one complete idea. The idea that the hippies constituted a counterculture suggests that once that culture went into exile, onto numerous communes, they existed as a diaspora. The Farm's existence as a spiritual commune, with their roots in Haight-Ashbury's short-lived utopian dream, and their continuation and evolution of that dream in Tennessee, make this particular group a model for the diaspora. The Farm, with its larger profile, publishing, and outreach programs, became the preeminent post-Haight-Ashbury commune. The commune was able to preserve the counterculture in exile, while it became a leader in dictating the direction of its progress. The Farm's efforts in midwifery, sustainable living, promotion of vegetarian diets, and outreach in America's inner cities and the Third World all point to a proactive counterculture and the commune's leadership role for the remnants of the counterculture. While the profile of the counterculture has diminished, a shift in American attitudes toward natural childbirth, ecology, and a more earth-friendly diet containing a greater variety of organic and vegetarian options reveal a significant success for their agenda.

Abstract:
Background: Managers working with sustainability and environmental issues are receiving higher priority in organizations (Knight & Paterson, 2018) and the environmental issues are today discussed at the top management level in corporations worldwide (Landrum, 2017). In line with the increased interest of the role, literature focusing on the individual sustainability manager, has recognized the need for competencies and motivational drivers in order to take sustainable actions (Wiek et al., 2011; UNESCO, 2017; Rieckmann, 2018). In addition, literature presents a significant positive relationship between motivations of individual managers and firm performance. However, previous literature covering key competencies for sustainable development, as well as individual motivations for working with sustainability, is rather ambiguous. Therefore, the authors identified a gap in the literature and initiated an interest to further investigate the key competencies and individual motivations of a sustainability manager operating in Sweden today. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the individual sustainability manager operating in Sweden today. The study aims to identify the key competencies required for operating in the role, and to explain corresponding underlying motivations for working with sustainability. Method: The study follows a qualitative and exploratory approach by combining existing literature, theories and empirical data. The empirical data was collected through six semi-structured interviews. The empirical findings were further analyzed following a thematic analysis technique. Conclusion: The authors suggest a proposed framework that illustrates the identified key competencies required for operating as a sustainability manager in Sweden today, as well as the underlying motivations for working with corporate sustainability. The illustration of the proposed framework provides a generalized foundation for understanding the sustainability manager role in terms of key competencies and individual motivations. This framework adds to current literature on the topic of sustainability management and can be used as a means for evaluating current sustainability managers, as well as a means to analyze current education for sustainable development.

Capitalism, nowadays, promotes a global world and a homogenized culture to obtain more profit. It changes the conditions of thousand people lifes and works to reach its objectives. Such process is also happening in Goiânia, what can be noticed by the increase of unemployment, while some commercial and industrial jobs get extinct. So, the recent unemployed person finds himself / herself in a world without structure and he / she cannot find answers in the tradicional sence producer instituions. Some of these recent unemployed people are the group of the researched open marketing workers . When they search explanations for the shaking of their financial and faith situations, they discover, in the symbolic wealth market , religions that promess them solutions. They do not transit uncomfortably, they become walkers among these systems. They make their choices, in a subjective and individualized way, for a model that fits in his interests. Even though there are few exceptions, they question the sense system , but not their faith in God. They still fear Him, keeping with them the historical sense strengh the open marketing workers need so much, even in the day-by-day precariousness.

Abstract:
The hippies are the descendants of the beat generation of the fifties. Both groups showed non-conformism. The hippies tried to create a new type of family based on companionate marriage. They liked life in a community, close to nature. They were against war, but refused to take part in public demonstrations in the streets. They were nonviolent, above all. They rejected western materialism. Eastern philosophy was the only antidote for them. Heyday could only be reached with drugs. The songs of the sixties and seventies tried to awake the American consciousness. At the end of the seventies, the movement faded some hippies became artists, others became contestants and others yuppies. They are the present-day trends of the united-states. They are young urban professionals. They are serious and ambitious. They aspire to glory. They dream of power and money. They like sports and eat only healthy food. They have comfortable incomes. In politics, they are at the same time (in social matters) and conservative (for their business). They work harder than their parents to succeed, (the economical conjuncture is not particularly good for them. ) In the seventies, the American had lost the notion of American dream, after several disillusions: Vietnam, Watergate, energy crisis,. . . , but on the contrary, the yuppies think it is possible. If you really want it badly. Despite the diametrally opposite conceptions, some hippies went through their judgment again and became yuppies

Abstract:
Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) has been used since the 1980s to consolidate porosity in cast metal shapes and improve mechanical properties in conventional forgings and wrought components. The availability of high quality metal powders has made it possible to produce Near Net Shape (NNS) items and more complex geometry components that are fully dense and offer an attractive set of properties at reduced cost. Powder HIP manufacturing reduces initial material usage and subsequent machining costs. Metal powder production and HIP processing are automated methods, which also provide protection against forging route obsolescence. Setup costs are lower and batch sizes smaller. HIPped powder microstructures are isotropic and equiaxed, with fine grain sizes not normally achieved in heavy section components, which facilitates ultrasonic NDE examination. Inclusion contents are lower and of more benign geometry, easing fracture and safety case development. Although widely used in the off-shore oil industry in high integrity applications, particularly to reduce welded connections, in the nuclear industry interest has been limited. The quality of HIPped powder items can provide through life cost savings since there is greater assurance of structural integrity compared to welded or wrought components. In an extensive programme of testing, it was established that HIPped powder 316L and 304L components, in items up to several tons in weight, have equivalent or slightly better strength, toughness and corrosion resistance. HIPped powder items are now in service as pressure retaining components in PWR plant. Effort is now directed at widening the range of components for which the HIP process is appropriate focusing on reducing welds in the plant construction sequence. This is particularly relevant to pipework manufacture and assembly. The benefits of facilitating an ASME Code Case for Powder HIP are also being considered.

Abstract:
Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) has been used for many years to consolidate porosity in cast metal shapes to improve mechanical properties. When applied to fine metal powders, it is possible to produce Near Net Shape (NNS) items and more complex geometry components that are fully dense and offer an attractive set of properties at reduced cost. NNS items from powder deliver cost savings by reducing initial material usage and subsequent machining costs. Powder production and HIP processing are automated methods, which provide protection against forging route obsolescence. Setup costs are lower and batch sizes smaller, particularly well suited to small numbers of high integrity components. HIPped powder microstructures are isotropic and equiaxed, with uniformly fine grain sizes not normally achieved in heavy section components, which facilitates ultrasonic NDE examination. Improved features to facilitate NDE are readily incorporated into the HIP assembly. Inclusion contents are lower and of more benign geometry, easing fracture assessment. Use of the technology has grown, particularly in the off-shore oil industry where it is already established in high integrity applications, particularly in place of welded joints. Take-up in the more conservative nuclear industry has been slow. The quality of HIPped powder items can provide through life cost savings since there is greater assurance of structural integrity compared to welded or wrought components. This paper presents a materials perspective on the way in which Rolls-Royce has gained experience with HIPped powders since the 1990s, initially with hardfacing materials to minimise welding defects and provide a robust manufacturing route. Building on this database, we have now established that HIPped powder 316L/304L components, in items up to several tons in weight, have equivalent or slightly better strength, toughness and corrosion resistance to their forged or cast counterparts. This data is now part of a submission to ASME for inclusion in the Pressure Vessel Code. Rolls-Royce now has a robust methodology in place to develop safety cases and is extending the number of applications in pressure boundary components on current and future classes of equipment. A strength-in-depth argument has been endorsed by external approval organisations and is supporting current submarine build programmes. Other applications in the growing civil nuclear market are now under consideration.

The Safety Case for a thin-walled pressure retaining component has been accepted and implemented.

In a broad programme of testing, Rolls-Royce has established that HIPped powder 316L components, in items up to several tons in weight, have equivalent or slightly better strength, toughness and corrosion properties across a wide range of test environments. A methodology for developing robust safety justifications for use has been developed. Manufacture of pressure seal components is now in progress and the economics of other applications such as pump bowls are being considered. The quality of HIPped powder items can provide through life cost savings since there is greater assurance of structural integrity compared to welded or wrought components.
