Abstract:
AbstractSoviet hippies were in many ways a paradoxical phenomenon. They imitated an ideal that was shaped by American realities in a Soviet world. They were anti-Soviet, yet they professed an apolitical life style. This article proposes that rather than looking at the Soviet hippies with ideology in mind it is more fruitful to consider them an emotional community whose ‘emotional style’ differed from the Soviet mainstream and ultimately proved a formidable challenge to the Soviet system. The article investigates several exterior markers of Soviet hippie culture, which formed and reflected the ‘emotional style’ of the Soviet hippies such as their creed of love and peace, their enjoyment of rock music and the significance of hippie fashion. Drawing on interviews with contemporary witnesses from the Soviet hippie scene particular attention is given to the new rhetoric hippies employed to describe emotions particular to their style of life, to the way the practice of these emotions differed from the official Soviet emotional codex and to the nexus that linked the vocabulary and practice of emotions with specific items, sites, rituals and attributes. The article concludes that, while Soviet hippies remained a subculture, their style, including their ‘emotional style’ proved very durable and capable of expansion into the mainstream, ultimately surviving the Soviet system and its emotional norms.

Abstract:
The study on the hippies is abundant in numbers but not many of them study the disposition and identification of the hippies during the 1960s and its aftermath. Pierre Bourdieu’s theory on cultural practice, theory of hybridity, and globalization are used in this research to investigate the disposition and trans-nationality of the hippies in order to search for their universal identity. A Transnational American Studies approach is implemented to cover the following issue: (1) the socio-cultural disposition of the hippies in the 1960s, (2) the influence of European movement to the American Hippies, (3) the cultural hybridity of the hippies in relation with India, and (4) the similarities of the hippies and the reasons behind it. This research used library research and document analysis method in gathering the data whereas descriptive analysis approach is also used to analyze the data. The United States of America, India and Germany are the three countries being studied in relation to the hippies in the 1960s. The finding shows similar dispositions or background among the hippies in some countries being studied as well as some similarities and differences in the cultural practices of the hippies in the countries being studied. This shows the transnationality of the hippie’s identity and the influence of hybridity and globalization which causes the shifting of ideology and cultural practices of the hippies in its developments. Keywords: hippies, identity, Pierre Bourdieu, habitus, hybridity, globalization, TransnationalAmerican Studies

Abstract:
This article looks at an important interface between the small community of Soviet hippies and Soviet authorities: the politics of madness. Like dissidents, hippies often found themselves forcefully sequestered in psychiatric institutions. Yet an account of state repression against colourful, innocent flower children does not give justice to the complicated power games that were fought on the battlefield of craziness. Hippies used the ease with which diagnoses of schizophrenia were handed out to obtain exemption from the army. They embraced and fostered the label ‘crazy', subverting official actions through absolute acceptance rather than resistance. At the same time, they feared the loss of control that came with psychiatric treatment, yet re-invented their often traumatic experiences into a marker of their identity. The relationship between hippies and Soviet psychiatry reflects the multi-layered entanglement, which bound the Soviet system with one of its most unruly subjects. Hippie politics of craziness defy easy classification in conformism and dissent, instead highlighting the way in which a group at the margins of society made use of the political environment they lived in, subverting and succumbing to it at the same time.

Abstract:
Microporosity in both HIPped and non-HIPped unmodified aluminum cast alloy A356-T6 was quantified metallographically in terms of its area, area percentage, length, sphericity and perimeter. In the studied materials, the secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) values vary from 82μm to 96μm for both the HIPped and the non-HIPped castings. HIPping process significantly reduces porosity area fraction and pore sizes. The maximum area fraction of porosity and maximum pore area of the non-HIPped specimens are increased with increasing SDAS.

Abstract:
Cast aluminium alloy 354 has become an important industrial material owing to its excellent mechanical properties and good castability. It finds widespread use in the manufacture of compressor wheel castings. Castings have been studied since long and different approaches have been attempted to improve their quality. One such approach is Hot Iso-static Pressing (Hipping). This paper studies the effect of Hipping on the strength, ductility, strain energy density W and quality rating Qo of the alloy 354. The study shows that Hipped samples have better % elongation to fracture, higher W and Qo values as compared to non-Hipped samples. This behavior is consistent across different aging conditions of the alloy. Hipping also results in a reduction in scatter of ultimate tensile strength of 354, thus making it valuable to industries that demand high material consistency.

Abstract:
The effect of HIPping on the mechanical properties and microstructure of a cast Ti-6Cr-5Mo-5V-4Al alloy have been investigated. In the cast condition, the alloy predominantly consists of coarse β grains. In comparison to the HIPped samples, it exhibits poor mechanical properties, in particular low ductility, due to large amounts of remnant porosity. HIPping at 740°C substantially reduces the amount and size of porosity, while HIPping at 820°C and 900°C virtually eliminates all porosity, significantly improving the mechanical properties.

Abstract:
As an art, literature and film offer ways of seeing and feeling new things without having to experience them ourselves. They can also function in society as a means of both criticizing and affirming cultural values, as well as describing historical events throughout the years. Thus, this study aims to explore representations of social threats posed by the hippies toward American society in the late 1960s as depicted in the film ‘Bad Times at the El Royale’. Besides, this study also aims to investigate the solutions performed by the rest of the American population in overcoming the threats as demonstrated in the film. The data of this study are the utterances and scenes reflecting the social threats and solutions portrayed in this film. The method of this study was qualitative methods. Results show that the social threats posed by the hippies are determined through the contrast between the American values and the hippie values as depicted in the film, while the solutions are interpreted based on what actually happened according to history.

Abstract:
Fe -based bulk amorphous rods of 3 mm in diameter and a composition of Fe 41 Cr 15 Mo 14 C 15 B 6 Y 2 Co 7 were produced by copper mold casting. The as-cast amorphous rods contain a small (2%) fraction of pores. To close the pores, samples cut from the amorphous rods were hot isostatically pressed (hipped) at 863 K, which is in the supercooled liquid temperature range between the glass transition temperature and the crystallization temperature of the amorphous phase, and under a pressure of 200 Mpa. Microstructure examination of the hipped samples shows that hipping results in an increase of the density of the samples from 7.9 g/cm3 to 8.0 g/cm3, and a decrease of the porosity level from 2% to 1%, and that a very small fraction of unknown crystalline phase form. As a result of these microstructure change caused by hipping, the average room temperature compressive fracture strength of the bulk metallic glass (BMG) decrease from 3500 Mpa to 3000 MPa, while the strain to fracture changes little from 1.5% to 1.4%. The mechanisms of the effect of hipping on microstructure and mechanical properties of the Fe -based BMG are discussed.

Abstract:
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Americans encountered an unexpected group of people who, at first sight, seemed unreal: Hasidic hippies. Conceiving of Hasidic Judaism as being incompatible with the spirit of the era and of hippie culture as being far removed from the Jewish tradition, most Jews could not comprehend how anyone could try to amalgamate two such opposing cultures. Many of the young Hasidic hippies were affiliated with or influenced by the House of Love and Prayer (HLP), a Jewish outreach center that operated in San Francisco between 1967 and 1977 and promoted the mixture of traditional Hasidic Judaism with the counter-culture. It represented a new generation in American religious life: the baby boomers, with their spiritual journeys and cultural preferences, which included attempts to unite religious traditions and cultural trends that just a few years earlier had seemed too different to bridge. The HLP promoted the return to tradition and the embracing of the mystical and supernatural elements of Judaism. Together with other groups that emerged in the late 1960s and 1970s, the HLP helped bring about a revolution in the practicing of the Jewish tradition, one that gave expression to the style and values of the Jewish members of the counterculture.

Abstract:
On the island of Ibiza, the sixties and seventies saw a touristic boom and the rise of hippies. The hippie presence ended shortly after, but left various elements considered to be direct legacies. Among these elements, it is worth highlighting the creation of a local fashion inspired by traditional clothing and hippies. This fashion was called Adlib and has its appearance date in 1971 with the first Ibiza Fashion Week. In this paper, a case study is carried out, supported by interviews, which delves into the historical evolution and the current situation of Adlib Ibiza fashion and the businesses under this umbrella brand. Adlib fashion has always had more relevance as a tool for promoting and differentiating tourism than as an independent economic sector. Even so, it is a small sector made up of small or micro businesses created by entrepreneurs from the island who seek to market their designs. Unfortunately, many businesses fail shortly after their opening and do not survive the retirement of their founder, due to the strong link of these businesses to the designs and creations of their owner. The evolution of the brand and its businesses undermines any optimism in future trends, and possibly suggests a slow decline.

Abstract:
The study on CM247LC used the traditional approach for Near-Netshape Hot Isostatic Pressing (NNSHIP) with sacrificial low carbon steel tooling, which was built using Selective Laser Melting (SLM), to produce a shaped CM247LC blisk. The assessment of the microstructure focused on both the exterior components in order to determine the depth of the Fe-diffusion layer and on the interior microstructure. Samples were extracted from the Hot Isostatic Pressed (HIPped) components for tensile testing at both room and elevated temperatures. The components were scanned to assess the geometrical shrinkages due to Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIPping). An oversized blisk was also produced based on the measurements as a demonstrator component. In addition, a further study was carried out on a novel idea that used a solid IN718 disk in the centre of the blisk to create a multi-material component.

Abstract:
In the late 1960s and 1970s, living history flowered, with new developments in research and interpretation at sites like Plimoth Plantation and Old Sturbridge Village, and the establishment of many new living history farms and museums, alongside a new professional organization: the Association for Living History Farms and Museums. This article examines this shift and puts it into conversation with the concurrent countercultural and commune movement, which often resembled—both aesthetically and ideologically—new living history. Using this case study as a model, I argue that in order to fully understand and account for developments in public practice, we must not only look at public history in a wider lens, but also account for form alongside context.

At the end of the sixties, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (rcmp) ordered officers engaged in undercover operations to send reports on drug users and especially hippies. This paper argues that collecting information on hippies was a useful weapon in the battle against softening penalties for marijuana offences since the federal police force was among the strongest opponents of legalizing or decriminalizing marijuana for recreational purposes. By depicting hippies in very negative terms, the rcmp was able to describe them as a threat and argue against their cultural, social, and political demands on the grounds that this was necessary to preserve society as it was.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study is to develop a manufacturing technology using hybrid selective laser melting/hot isostatic pressing (SLM/HIP) process to produce full density net-shape components more rapidly and at lower cost than processing by SLM alone. Design/methodology/approach Ti-6Al-4V powder was encapsulated in situ by the production of as-SLMed shell prior to the HIP process. After HIPping, the SLM shell is an integral part of the final component. Finite element (FE) modelling based on pure plasticity theory of porous metal coupled with an iterative procedure has been adopted to simulate HIPping of the encapsulated Ti-6Al-4V powder and SLMed shell. Two demonstrator parts have been modelled, designed, produced and experimentally validated. Geometrical analysis and microstructural characterisation have been carried out to demonstrate the efficiency of the process. Findings The FE model is in agreement with the measured data obtained and confirms that the design of the shell affects the resulting deformed parts. In addition, the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Electron backscatter diffraction EBSD (EBSD) of the interior and exterior parts reveal a considerably different grain structure and crystallographic orientation with a good bonding between the SLMed shell and HIPped powder. Originality/value An approach to improve SLM productivity by combining it with HIP is developed to further innovate the advanced manufacturing field. The possibility of the hybrid SLS/HIP supported by FEA simulation as a net shape manufacturing process for fabrication of high performance parts has been demonstrated.

Abstract:
Coelho’s Hippie is based on the time in which Coelho is living the way of a hippie. Spiritual seekers make their way to India and even Nepal in the sixties in search of enlightenment. In the 1960s, the groups of unconventional appearance are associated with a subculture and reject conventional values. The paper tries to meet its objective by explaining how the protagonist cultivates his journey and achieves the spiritual awakening in the end of his journey. This paper explores issues of Quest of Spiritual Knowledge in Paulo Coelho’s Hippie through the lens of popular culture because in the today's world the text is connected to its cultural archetype. It interprets the issue of the hero quest and spiritual education in Coelho’s text and then its connection with popular culture. Coelho’s Hippie relates to how Paulo as well as the other young boys and girls challenge western and non-western concept of culture, and they leave their homes to experiment the world on their own. These youths appear to create and organize the hippie culture, live in separate commune and travel far and wide in quest of peace, freedom and love as protest. To interpret the text, I apply the readings and concepts of Joseph Campbell, John Storey, Ray Brown and Marshall Fishwick as a theoretical framework. The paper argues that although the hippie culture progresses as the counterculture of the 1960s youth movement, the protagonist’s quest of spiritual awakening is an issue of the study.

This is followed by an analysis and a discussion of the data, which have led to two main findings: not only were the antithetical ideas behind these two youth movements portrayed through the specific lettering and fonts used, but the latter feature specific traits that may be linked to our mental processes and possibly our limbic system, the most primordial part of our brain.

Abstract:
O artesanato é a principal atividade econômica.

Abstract:
Ti6Al4V component has been formed by hot isostatic pressing (HIPping) using internal graphite mould with Ni isolation layer. The shape of the graphite had no deformation after HIPping. The Ni isolation layer with a thickness of approximately 5μm on graphite before HIPping was diffused into the dense Ti6Al4V component surface and formed a uniform, compact and crack free layer with a thickness of approximately 100μm after HIPping. The Ni diffusion layer is not damaged after removing the graphite mould by unpolluted sandblasting. The interface topography and the elements diffusion have been assessed and it is found that the non-machined surface of Ti6Al4V component was improved by using graphite mould than those used mild steel. The roughness of non-machined surface after removing the graphite mould by sandblasting is Ra=1.6μm, and the roughness of non-machined surface after removing the mild steel by acid pickling is Ra=10.8μm. It is concluded that graphite mould could be used for the HIPping process to produce complex-shaped components.

Abstract:
This article offers an interpretation of Plato’s Lesser Hippias, containing several original claims. First, it contends that the dialogue takes place in front of an unnamed audience composed of Socrates’ students and the dialogue is therefore for their benefit, not that of Hippias or Eudicus. It then argues that Socrates juxtaposes himself to Hippias to show the superiority of philosophy to sophistry. Finally, this article claims that the central argument of the dialogue is a means to demonstrate Socrates’ superior understanding of justice, for he is able to tell the truth on the matter as well as lie, showing mastery of both philosophy and sophistry. These assertions demonstrate the importance of the Lesser Hippias in the broader Platonic corpus.

Abstract:
Gamma TiAl based alloys are important materials with potential applications in aerospace and automotive applications due to their high specific strength and creep resistance. The major barrier for their applications is their limited ductility at room temperature and limited hot workability. One way of overcoming this barrier is to reduce the grain sizes to ultrafine grained (<500μm) or nanostructured (<100nm) level. In our present study, we attempt to produce bulk ultrafine grained Ti- 47Al-2Cr (at%) alloy using a combination of high energy mechanical milling of elemental powders to produce a very fine structured Ti/Al/Cr composite powder and consolidation of the powder using hot isostatic pressing (HIPping). It was confirmed that high energy ball milling using a planetary ball mill led to the formation of extremely fine Ti and Al layered composite structure. The thermal behaviour of the powder was studied using differential thermal analysis, and it was shown that the reactions between the Ti and Al phases in the fine structured composite powder occur at fairly low temperatures, below the melting point of the Al phase (660oC). The macrostructure and phase structure of the HIPped samples were also examined using optical and scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). This paper is to report and discuss the results of this investigation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
An early-2008 Foreign Policy index found that 88% of active and retired American servicemen and women agree that the war in Iraq has stretched the United States military dangerously thin. Another 60% think that the US military today is weaker than it was five years ago. 74% of those surveyed hold low regards for the civilian leadership expressing that civilian policymakers set unreasonable goals for the US military to accomplish. With current military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan serving as backdrops, these inflections serve as the basis of a much-needed conversation on the evolving roles and responsibilities of civilian and military agencies in the post-conflict environment. The immediate solutions to the military’s frustrations have been logical if not only reactionary or temporary stopgaps. If the military is stretched too thin, then expand it. Over the next five years there will be substantial increases in the Army and Marine Corps by as much as over 90,000 troops. If the military is weakening, then strengthen it. The President’s 2008 defense budget pushes defense spending to levels not seen since the Reagan Administration, bringing with it a slew of new military hardware meant to keep the US military on the cutting edge of technology and flexible in the face of emerging threats. If the military is lacking comprehensive training and doctrine to combat insurgencies, then revise doctrine. In December 2007, the US Army and Marine Corps revamped their Counterinsurgency Field Manual, the first time in over two decades either service had published a field manual devoted to counterinsurgency.3 The next President of the United States will face a dynamic range of transnational threats that will likely make us rethink the way modern wars are fought. From terrorism and counterinsurgency to combating the spread of weapons of mass destruction, from illicit trafficking of drugs, people, and guns back to traditional conventional warfare with rising superpowers such as China and Russia, the United States must maintain a variety of diplomatic and military responses at its disposal. As emerging threats in the twenty-first century appear to be rooted at the nexus of security and development, a single-sided military solution cannot fully resolve a multi-dimensional problem. There is a need to develop a more comprehensive civil-military approach to combating terrorism, insurgency, and asymmetric warfare, something that has not fully materialized on the strategic or on the operational level. In order to do this, there is a need to tear down the stereotypes and reintroduce the hippie (statesmen) to the snake-eater (soldier).
