Abstract:
The study on the hippies is abundant in numbers but not many of them study the disposition and identification of the hippies during the 1960s and its aftermath. Pierre Bourdieu’s theory on cultural practice, theory of hybridity, and globalization are used in this research to investigate the disposition and trans-nationality of the hippies in order to search for their universal identity. A Transnational American Studies approach is implemented to cover the following issue: (1) the socio-cultural disposition of the hippies in the 1960s, (2) the influence of European movement to the American Hippies, (3) the cultural hybridity of the hippies in relation with India, and (4) the similarities of the hippies and the reasons behind it. This research used library research and document analysis method in gathering the data whereas descriptive analysis approach is also used to analyze the data. The United States of America, India and Germany are the three countries being studied in relation to the hippies in the 1960s. The finding shows similar dispositions or background among the hippies in some countries being studied as well as some similarities and differences in the cultural practices of the hippies in the countries being studied. This shows the transnationality of the hippie’s identity and the influence of hybridity and globalization which causes the shifting of ideology and cultural practices of the hippies in its developments.Keywords: hippies, identity, Pierre Bourdieu, habitus, hybridity, globalization, TransnationalAmerican Studies

Abstract:
AbstractSoviet hippies were in many ways a paradoxical phenomenon. They imitated an ideal that was shaped by American realities in a Soviet world. They were anti-Soviet, yet they professed an apolitical life style. This article proposes that rather than looking at the Soviet hippies with ideology in mind it is more fruitful to consider them an emotional community whose ‘emotional style’ differed from the Soviet mainstream and ultimately proved a formidable challenge to the Soviet system. The article investigates several exterior markers of Soviet hippie culture, which formed and reflected the ‘emotional style’ of the Soviet hippies such as their creed of love and peace, their enjoyment of rock music and the significance of hippie fashion. Drawing on interviews with contemporary witnesses from the Soviet hippie scene particular attention is given to the new rhetoric hippies employed to describe emotions particular to their style of life, to the way the practice of these emotions differed from the official Soviet emotional codex and to the nexus that linked the vocabulary and practice of emotions with specific items, sites, rituals and attributes. The article concludes that, while Soviet hippies remained a subculture, their style, including their ‘emotional style’ proved very durable and capable of expansion into the mainstream, ultimately surviving the Soviet system and its emotional norms.

Abstract:
This article looks at an important interface between the small community of Soviet hippies and Soviet authorities: the politics of madness. Like dissidents, hippies often found themselves forcefully sequestered in psychiatric institutions. Yet an account of state repression against colourful, innocent flower children does not give justice to the complicated power games that were fought on the battlefield of craziness. Hippies used the ease with which diagnoses of schizophrenia were handed out to obtain exemption from the army. They embraced and fostered the label ‘crazy', subverting official actions through absolute acceptance rather than resistance. At the same time, they feared the loss of control that came with psychiatric treatment, yet re-invented their often traumatic experiences into a marker of their identity. The relationship between hippies and Soviet psychiatry reflects the multi-layered entanglement, which bound the Soviet system with one of its most unruly subjects. Hippie politics of craziness defy easy classification in conformism and dissent, instead highlighting the way in which a group at the margins of society made use of the political environment they lived in, subverting and succumbing to it at the same time.

Abstract:
As an art, literature and film offer ways of seeing and feeling new things without having to experience them ourselves. They can also function in society as a means of both criticizing and affirming cultural values, as well as describing historical events throughout the years. Thus, this study aims to explore representations of social threats posed by the hippies toward American society in the late 1960s as depicted in the film ‘Bad Times at the El Royale’. Besides, this study also aims to investigate the solutions performed by the rest of the American population in overcoming the threats as demonstrated in the film. The data of this study are the utterances and scenes reflecting the social threats and solutions portrayed in this film. The method of this study was qualitative methods. Results show that the social threats posed by the hippies are determined through the contrast between the American values and the hippie values as depicted in the film, while the solutions are interpreted based on what actually happened according to history.

Abstract:
In the late 1960s and 1970s, living history flowered, with new developments in research and interpretation at sites like Plimoth Plantation and Old Sturbridge Village, and the establishment of many new living history farms and museums, alongside a new professional organization: the Association for Living History Farms and Museums. This article examines this shift and puts it into conversation with the concurrent countercultural and commune movement, which often resembled—both aesthetically and ideologically—new living history. Using this case study as a model, I argue that in order to fully understand and account for developments in public practice, we must not only look at public history in a wider lens, but also account for form alongside context.

This article examines the short-lived hippie phenomenon in Cape Town during the late 1960s through the lens of the disappearance of a young woman from the University of Cape Town in the Knysna forests in 1969. It seeks to explain the dynamics of a particular kind of emerging culture and the way it was infused by public mystifications and conceptions of hippies. In doing so it has two aims in mind, namely to account for an apparent historical puzzle and to cast light on a largely forgotten dimension of white social history.

Abstract:
At the end of the sixties, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (rcmp) ordered officers engaged in undercover operations to send reports on drug users and especially hippies. This paper argues that collecting information on hippies was a useful weapon in the battle against softening penalties for marijuana offences since the federal police force was among the strongest opponents of legalizing or decriminalizing marijuana for recreational purposes. By depicting hippies in very negative terms, the rcmp was able to describe them as a threat and argue against their cultural, social, and political demands on the grounds that this was necessary to preserve society as it was.

Abstract:
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Americans encountered an unexpected group of people who, at first sight, seemed unreal: Hasidic hippies. Conceiving of Hasidic Judaism as being incompatible with the spirit of the era and of hippie culture as being far removed from the Jewish tradition, most Jews could not comprehend how anyone could try to amalgamate two such opposing cultures.Many of the young Hasidic hippies were affiliated with or influenced by the House of Love and Prayer (HLP), a Jewish outreach center that operated in San Francisco between 1967 and 1977 and promoted the mixture of traditional Hasidic Judaism with the counter-culture. It represented a new generation in American religious life: the baby boomers, with their spiritual journeys and cultural preferences, which included attempts to unite religious traditions and cultural trends that just a few years earlier had seemed too different to bridge. The HLP promoted the return to tradition and the embracing of the mystical and supernatural elements of Judaism. Together with other groups that emerged in the late 1960s and 1970s, the HLP helped bring about a revolution in the practicing of the Jewish tradition, one that gave expression to the style and values of the Jewish members of the counterculture.

Abstract:
Background: Managers working with sustainability and environmental issues are receiving higher priority in organizations (Knight & Paterson, 2018) and the environmental issues are today discussed at the top management level in corporations worldwide (Landrum, 2017). In line with the increased interest of the role, literature focusing on the individual sustainability manager, has recognized the need for competencies and motivational drivers in order to take sustainable actions (Wiek et al., 2011; UNESCO, 2017; Rieckmann, 2018). In addition, literature presents a significant positive relationship between motivations of individual managers and firm performance. However, previous literature covering key competencies for sustainable development, as well as individual motivations for working with sustainability, is rather ambiguous. Therefore, the authors identified a gap in the literature and initiated an interest to further investigate the key competencies and individual motivations of a sustainability manager operating in Sweden today. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the individual sustainability manager operating in Sweden today. The study aims to identify the key competencies required for operating in the role, and to explain corresponding underlying motivations for working with sustainability. Method: The study follows a qualitative and exploratory approach by combining existing literature, theories and empirical data. The empirical data was collected through six semi-structured interviews. The empirical findings were further analyzed following a thematic analysis technique. Conclusion: The authors suggest a proposed framework that illustrates the identified key competencies required for operating as a sustainability manager in Sweden today, as well as the underlying motivations for working with corporate sustainability. The illustration of the proposed framework provides a generalized foundation for understanding the sustainability manager role in terms of key competencies and individual motivations. This framework adds to current literature on the topic of sustainability management and can be used as a means for evaluating current sustainability managers, as well as a means to analyze current education for sustainable development.

Abstract: This work discusses the exhibitions and participating in the Expositions of Contemporary Art in Brazil of Geraldo Porto since 1966, highlighting the year 1974, when he gained recognition from critics for his artistic work. Geraldo Porto took part and reflected critically on Contemporary Art, contributing to the History of Art in Campinas in Brazil during this period of disruption and transgressions in Brazil and worldwide. A crescente presença de forasteiros em Samaipata, uma pequena cidade boliviana próxima a Santa Cruz de la Sierra, faz com que, com grande frequência, o substantivo "gringo" seja usado para se referir a pessoas, bem como a locução adjetiva "de gringos" venha colada com certas coisas (festas de gringos, lugares de gringos, manias de gringos...). No entanto, as duas formas de uso se revelavam muito mais plásticas do que poderiam parecer à primeira vista: mesmo quando gringo era visto como "alguém de fora", identificar esse alguém e estabelecer o que se está se considerando como o local (Samaipata, as terras baixas, a Bolívia, a América Latina) dependiam muito mais das circunstâncias em jogo do que de qualquer forma de definição enciclopédica. Mas isso não implicava que a noção de gringo fosse, tão simplesmente, uma concepção subjetiva, que não dependesse da circulação de ideias e do compartilhamento de certas experiências dentro da cidade. Mais do que isso, havia uma certa "má-fama" bem disseminada - embora não absolutamente disseminada - que se refletia em algumas práticas instituídas pelo poder local para tentar minar os "abusos" cometidos pelos forasteiros na cidade - fossem eles turistas ou moradores estabelecidos. O objetivo de minha dissertação foi tentar entender o que fazia com que esse rótulo se tornasse tão disseminado e a razão que levava a categoria "gringo" a ser tão frequentemente associada a formas de subversão dos hábitos locais.

Abstract : The growing presence of outsiders in Samaipata, a tiny town near Santa Cruz de la Sierra, makes that, very often, the noun ?gringo? be used to refer to people, in the same way that he adjective ?gringo? is linked to certain things (gringo parties, gringo places, gringo manias?). Nevertheless, both uses showed to be much more plastic than would be expected at first glance: even when gringo was treated as someone from abroad, identifying this person and establishing what is being considered to be the local (Samaipata, the lowlands, Bolivia, Latin America) depended much more on the circunstances at stake than on any sort of encyclopedic definition. This assumption, however, didn?t imply that the idea of gringo should be treated as a strictly subjective conception, independent from the circulation of other ideas and from the share of some experiences that were going around the town. Moreover: there was a certain ?bad reputation? very widespread ? though not absolutely widespread ? that was reflected in some instituted practices that were being performed by the local authorities in order to undermine eventual ?abuses?practiced by outsiders in town ? tourists and established. The main aim of this dissertation was to understand the reasons that made this label so widespread and why this category, gringo, was so frequently related to some forms of subversion of the local ways of being.

Die Bluesbewegung war eine Jugendbewegung, die sich Ende der 1960er Jahre in der DDR formierte. Sie regte einen Kulturtransfer an, der in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren amerikanischen Blues in die DDR brachte. Die vorliegende Arbeit rekonstruiert diesen Prozess, angefangen bei den Motiven für die Jugendlichen, sich für Blues zu interessieren, über die Vermittlung des Blues durch verschiedene Medien, vor allem durch den Hörfunk, bis zur DDR-spezifischen Aneignung des Blues inner- und außerhalb der Szene
“Bluesbewegung” is the name of a youth movement that arose in the late 1960’s in the GDR. This movement encouraged the cultural transfer which brought American blues music into the GDR. My study wants to reconstruct this process beginning with the motives for being interested in Blues music, continuing with the transfer of Blues music throughout the media (especially in radio broadcasting), and finally, ending with the GDR-specific appropriation of Blues within and outside of the youth scene

Les hippies sont les descendants de la génération beats des années 50. Ces deux groupes ont fait preuve de non-conformisme. Les hippies ont tenté de créer un nouveau type de famille basé sur l'amour libre. Ils aimaient vivre en communauté, proche de la nature. Ils étaient contre la guerre, mais ils refusaient de manifester leur opposition dans la rue. Ils étaient avant tout des non-violents. Pour combattre le matérialisme occidental, qu'ils rejetaient, seule la philosophie orientale leur apparaissait comme l'antidote. L'épanouissement n'était possible que sous l'effet de la drogue. Les chansons des années 60 et 70 ont cherché à éveiller la conscience des américains. A la fin des années 70, ce mouvement s'éteint. Certains hippies sont devenus des artistes, certains se sont fondus dans l'anonymat des villes, d'autres sont devenus des contestataires et d'autres des yuppies. Ces derniers dominent aux Etats-Unis largement la tendance actuelle des années 80. Ce sont de jeunes cadres dynamiques. Ils sont sérieux et ambitieux. Ils aspirent à la gloire. Ils rêvent de pouvoir et d'argent. Ils sont sportifs et ne mangent que des aliments sains. Ils ont de confortables revenus. En politique, ils sont à la fois libéraux (en matière sociale) et conservateurs (pour leurs affaires). Ils se donnent plus de mal que leurs parents pour réussir, (la conjoncture économique ne leur est pas particulièrement favorable). Alors que dans les années 70, les américains avaient perdu à la suite de différentes désillusions : Viêt-Nam, Watergate, crise énergétique, etc. . . , la notion du rêve américain, les yuppies pensent au contraire que celui-ci est encore possible. Le tout est de le vouloir vraiment. Malgré des conceptions diamétralement opposées, certains hippies ont révisé leur jugement et sont devenus des yuppies
The hippies are the descendants of the beat generation of the fifties. Both groups showed non-conformism. The hippies tried to create a new type of family based on companionate marriage. They liked life in a community, close to nature. They were against war, but refused to take part in public demonstrations in the streets. They were nonviolent, above all. They rejected western materialism. Eastern philosophy was the only antidote for them. Heyday could only be reached with drugs. The songs of the sixties and seventies tried to awake the American consciousness. At the end of the seventies, the movement faded some hippies became artists, others became contestants and others yuppies. They are the present-day trends of the united-states. They are young urban professionals. They are serious and ambitious. They aspire to glory. They dream of power and money. They like sports and eat only healthy food. They have comfortable incomes. In politics, they are at the same time (in social matters) and conservative (for their business). They work harder than their parents to succeed, (the economical conjuncture is not particularly good for them. ) In the seventies, the American had lost the notion of American dream, after several disillusions: Vietnam, Watergate, energy crisis,. . . , but on the contrary, the yuppies think it is possible. If you really want it badly. Despite the diametrally opposite conceptions, some hippies went through their judgment again and became yuppies

Abstract:
Abstract This dissertation consists of two essays. The first essay analyzes financial preparation for retirement of American men and women, using the 2013 Survey of Finances. Specifically, for retirement plan, income is an important factor for men and women aged 35-45 because of their insufficient income, health (excellent) for men and women aged 46-59 because of continuing work, number of weeks worked per year for men and women aged 60-67 because they have already retired or will retire and many of them are participating in a part time job. Also, health has significantly positive effects on the share of the financial wealth invested in the stocks while age has significantly negative effects in the analysis. The second essay analyzes the differences between the hippie cohort and the X and Y cohorts for the adequate preparation for retirement. In the hippie cohort, using the Internet or online for getting information to make decisions about investments and saving has positive effects on satisfaction of the retirement income from pensions and Social Security even if it’s statistically insignificant in the X and Y cohorts. In the responses regarding the question of how rate the retirement income from job pensions and Social Security, the findings show that the hippie cohort is more likely than the X and Y cohorts in satisfaction of the retirement income from pensions and Social Security income. The results show that the hippie cohort is better than the X and Y cohorts in preparation for retirement.

Метою дослідження є удосконалення дизайн-проектування сучасного одягу на основі аналізу характерних ознак стилю хіпі, що сформувався під впливом політичних подій і актуальних соціальних проблем. Об’єктом дослідження є процес художнього проектування сучасного одягу на основі моди молодіжної субкультури. Предметом дослідження є розробка художньо-композиційних принципів проектування сучасного жіночого одягу, яка відштовхується від культури хіпі. Методом дослідження є детальне вивчення історії формування руху хіпі, причини виникнення молодіжної субкультури з метою виявлення ознак стилю і передачі основної ідеї в колекції; вивчення сучасних тенденцій моди з метою створення сучасного актуального одягу. Наукова новизна полягає в теоретичному обґрунтуванні застосування системи гармонізації структури і візуалізації форм сучасного одягу на базі використання елементів стилю хіпі. Практичне значення отриманих результатів полягає в розробці рекомендацій щодо створення проектних рішень колекцій сучасного костюма. На основі проведених досліджень виконано проектування сучасної колекції жіночого одягу з використанням ознак стилю хіпі і актуальних модних тенденцій.
Движение хиппи – это один из самых ярких примеров молодежных субкультур ХХ века, который неизменно влиял на моду. Необходимость детального изучения моды хиппи обусловлена актуальностью стиля молодежных субкультур и сегодня. Целью исследования является совершенствование дизайн-проектирования современной одежды на основе анализа характерных признаков стиля хиппи, сформировавшегося под влиянием политических событий и актуальных социальных проблем. Объектом исследования является процесс художественного проектирования современной одежды на основе моды молодежной субкультуры. Предметом исследования является разработка художественно-композиционных принципов проектирования современной женской одежды, которая отталкивается от культуры хиппи. В работе исследована история формирования движения хиппи, причины возникновения молодежной субкультуры; изучены современных тенденций моды с целью создания современного актуального одежды. Научная новизна заключается в теоретическом обосновании применения системы гармонизации структуры и визуализации форм современной одежды на основе использования элементов стиля хиппи. Практическое значение полученных результатов заключается в разработке рекомендаций по созданию проектных решений коллекций современного костюма. На основе проведенных исследований выполнено проектирование современной коллекции женской одежды с использованием признаков стиля хиппи и актуальных модных тенденций.
The hippie movement is one of the most striking examples of youth subcultures of the twentieth century, which has invariably influenced fashion. The need for a detailed study of hippie fashion is due to the relevance of the style of youth subcultures today. The aim of the study is to improve the design of modern clothing based on the analysis of the characteristic features of the hippie style, which was formed under the influence of political events and current social problems. The object of the research is the process of artistic design of modern clothing based on the fashion of the youth subculture. The subject of the research is the development of artistic and compositional principles for designing modern women's clothing, which is based on the hippie culture. The research method is a detailed study of the history of the formation of the hippie movement, the reasons for the emergence of the youth subculture in order to identify the signs of style and transfer the main idea in the collection; study of modern fashion trends in order to create modern topical clothing. The scientific novelty lies in the theoretical substantiation of the application of the system of harmonization of the structure and visualization of the forms of modern clothing based on the use of elements of the hippie style. The practical significance of the results obtained lies in the development of recommendations for the creation of design solutions for collections of a modern costume. On the basis of the research carried out, the design of a modern collection of women's clothing using signs of the hippie style and current fashion trends has been carried out.

Hippies generally understood themselves as a non-materialistic and anti-materialist movement. This chapter uses a material prism to explore Soviet hippie culture: their things. Ironically material items were of the utmost importance to a community whose ideas included a strong commitment to non-materiality. Yet, as the chapter demonstrates, hippie things were important connectors to both the global counterculture (via symbolic alignment of exterior markers) and the world of late socialism, whose weaknesses hippies used to their advantage. At the same time hippies started to spin around things an elaborate ideology, which as a fashion survived their own existence.

The first chapter charts the history of the Soviet hippie movement all across the Soviet Union, using both declassified KGB and party documents as well as personal interviews. It explores the role of the official press in inspiring youngsters to become ‘hippies’ and the crucial transmission belt of diplomatic parents and other Soviet elites allowed to have direct contact with the West. It delves into the world of intellectual circles in Moscow in the 1960s, which provided some of the intellectual soil on which a Soviet variation of hippie ideals could grow. It subsequently traces some of the fashion and style roots of the Soviet hippies, which range from the Soviet stiliagi to the British Beatles, from glimpses of Western hippies to the Soviet-infused imagination of youngsters wanting to look different than the rest.

Hippies in the late Soviet Union appeared to many like creatures from a different star. Yet, a closer look reveals that the history of this movement has both short- and long-term precedents, which range from early revolutionary ideals to the generation of beatniks and Beatles fans, who were only slightly older than the wave of hippie youngsters that appeared in the late 1960s all across the Soviet Union. The introduction also situates the topic of Soviet hippies both within the history of the global hippie movement as well as in the context of late Soviet life and reality. A separate discussion is devoted to the methodology of oral history and the role of the subjective authorial voice. The introduction concludes with the overall argument of the book that the worlds of hippies and late socialism were not incompatible but in a bizarre way a good fit to each other that shaped the character of both.

Abstract Castings usually contain defects such as shrinkage cavities and internal gas porosity. The application of hot isostatic pressing (HIPping) to cast metals can remove such defects through the synergistic effect of high isostatic pressure and high temperature. This paper investigates the effects of HIPping on creep of cast A359/SiC/20p composite. Although creep life was expected to improve due to removal of internal porosity in the castings, the creep results were contrary to expectations. Activation energy calculated for the cast composite, showed a decrease in activation energy for the material after HIPping. Creep life was noted to have improved with higher tensile strength as for the cast composite while creep strain at failure improved with an increase in elongation for the cast-HIPped composite. The effect of stress on creep properties are reported to show a decrease in creep life and creep strain at failure with an increase in stress, temperature remaining constant.

The purpose of this study is to assess the feasibility of incorporating a Humid Air Turbine (HAT) into a coal-based, indirectly fired High Performance Power System (HIPPS). The HIPPS/HAT power plant exhibits a one percentage point greater thermal efficiency than the combined-cycle HIPPS plant. The capital costs for the HIPPS and HIPPS/HAT plants with identical net power output are nearly equivalent at $1380/kW. Levelized cost of electricity (COE) for the same size plants is 5.3 cents/kWh for the HIPPS plant and 5.4 cents/kWh for the HIPPS/HAT plant; the HIPPS/HAT plant improved thermal efficiency is offset by the higher fuel cost associated with a lower coal/natural gas fuel ratio. However, improved environmental performance is associated with the HIPPS/HAT cycle, as evidenced by lower CO2, SO2, and NOx emissions. Considering the uncertainties associated with the performance and cost estimates of the yet unbuilt components, the HIPPS/HAT and HIPPS power plants are presently considered to be comparable alternatives for future power generation technologies. The Department of Energy’s Combustion 2000 Program will provide revised design specifications and more accurate costs for these components allowing more definitive assessments to be performed.

Abstract Safety instrument system is composed of sensor, logic solver and final actuator. It is widely used in process industry, such as oil and gas industry, chemical industry, metallurgy and electric power industry. It is an important measure to ensure the safety of production, which can effectively avoid the potential danger to people, equipment and the environment. However, when it breaks down, the consequences can be expected to be extremely serious. Therefore, HIPPS requires low risk, so it is necessary to quantitatively evaluate the dynamic performance of HIPPS to ensure the high safety of HIPPS during the design life cycle. In this paper, a Bayesian network based method is proposed to evaluate the dynamic performance of HIPPS. The effects of different detection methods and maintenance methods on the dynamic performance of HIPPS were analyzed quantitatively. The results show that the performance of the system has been improved obviously after maintenance. Compared with the traditional method, the performance of HIPPS is improved by introducing partial stroke test. The sensitivity analysis shows that the failure rate has a great influence on the risk of HIPPS valve. Increased coverage of PST may improve the performance of HIPPS.
