Abstract:

Abstract:
The laminoplasty technique was devised by Hirabayashi in 1978 for patients diagnosed with multilevel cervical spondylotic myelopathy. Objective: To describe an easy modification of Hirabayashi’s method and present the clinical and radiological results from a five-year follow-up study. Method and Results: Eighty patients had 5 levels of decompression (C3-C7), 3 patients had 6 levels of decompression (C2-T1) and 3 patients had 4 levels of decompression (C3-C6). Foraminotomies were performed in 23 cases (27%). Following Nurick`s scale, 76 patients (88%) improved, 9 (11%) had the same Nurick grade, and one patient worsened and was advised to undergo another surgical procedure. No deaths were observed. The mean surgery time was 122 min. Radiographic evaluation showed an increase in the mean sagittal diameter from 11.2 mm at pretreatment to 17.3 mm post surgery. There was no significant difference between pretreatment and post-surgery C2-C7 angles. Conclusions: This two-open-doors laminoplasty technique is safe, easy and effective and can be used as an alternative treatment for cases of multilevel cervical spondylotic myelopathy without instability.

Abstract:
Objective This study was performed to evaluate the role of posterior suspension of the laminae–ossification of the ligamentum flavum complex combined with miniplate fixation (modified expansive thoracic laminoplasty) in treating thoracic ossification of the ligamentum flavum (TOLF). Methods Eight patients with TOLF treated by modified expansive thoracic laminoplasty were retrospectively analyzed. Their general information, operative time, intraoperative blood loss, and postoperative complications were recorded. Neurological functional recovery was evaluated by the modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association (mJOA) score and Hirabayashi recovery rate preoperatively, postoperatively, and at the final follow-up. Preoperative and postoperative imaging was performed, and the decompression range and internal fixation positioning were evaluated. Results The mJOA score significantly improved from 4.63 points preoperatively to 9.0 points at the final follow-up (Hirabayashi recovery rate of 77.75%). Postoperative computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed sufficient decompression of the surgical segment. At the final follow-up, the internal implants were well-placed, the lamina–ligamentum flavum complex showed no significant displacement, and neurological functional recovery was satisfactory. Conclusion Surgical treatment of TOLF is complicated and high-risk. Characterized by simplicity and sufficient decompression, modified expansive thoracic laminoplasty can reduce the risk of cerebrospinal fluid leakage and nerve injury with satisfactory neurological functional recovery.

Abstract:
Cervical spondylotic myelopathy can result from degenerative cervical spondylosis, herniated disk material, osteophytes, redundant ligamentum flavum, or ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament. Surgical intervention for multi-level myelopathy aims to decompress the spinal cord and maintain stability of the cervical spine. Laminoplasty was major surgical advancement as laminectomy resulted in kyphosis and unsatisfactory outcomes. Hirabayashi popularised the expansive open door laminoplasty which was later modified several surgeons. Laminoplasty has changed the way surgeons approach multilevel cervical spondylotic myelopathy.

Abstract:
A systematic revision of the genera Georthocladius Strenzke, 1941 and Parachaetocladius Wülker, 1959, and a key to adult males is presented. Two new Holarctic species are diagnosed and described based on morphological characters of the adult male: Parachaetocladius pyrenaeus sp. n. (Palaearctic region) and Parachaetocladius broankerothurrie sp. n. (Nearctic region). Additional taxonomic notes on related genera of Orthocladiinae and synonymies for four species from Japan are also provided, which include: Parachaetocladius kuramasingularis (Sasa, 1989), Parachaetocladius kamiovatus (Sasa & Hirabayashi, 1993), and Parachaetocladius sunabaabeus (Tanaka & Sasa, 2001) being the junior synonyms of Parachaetocladius akanoctavus Sasa & Kamimura, 1987. An updated checklist of both Georthocladius and Parachaetocladius species with taxonomic remarks, ecology, discussions and a provisional key for adult male are also provided.

Abstract:
Bathymetric distribution of aquatic oligochaetes was studied at 8 stations with different depths (mean depth 16.7 ± 9.4 m, min. 5.3 m, max. 29.4 m) in July 2012 in mesotrophic Lake Kizaki, Nagano Prefecture, Central Japan. The average density was 10424 ± 5346 individuals m-2. Oligochaetes were numerically dominant at all sampling stations. High density, sometimes more than 10000 individuals m-2,was recorded at 3 stations (St. 4, 5, and 6) deeper than 18 m. Maximum density was 20561 ± 13864 individuals m-2 at Station 4 (depth 29.4 m, ignition loss of sediment 13.5%, bottom water temperature 8.1 °C and DO of bottom water 0.12 mg l-1). We identified a total of 5 genera and 7 species belonging to three subfamilies: i.e., 1 species of Naidinae, 2 species of Rhyacodrilinae and 4 species of Tubificinae. Dominant species (in order of abundance) were Tubifex tubifex (Müller, 1774) (8550 ± 6317 individuals m-2; 82.0%) and Limnodrilus spp. (L. hoffmeisteri Claparède, 1862 and L. claparedeianus Ratzel, 1868) (1710 ± 1383 individuals m-2; 16.4%). Tubifex and Limnodrilus were obtained from every station, and the density of T. tubifex tended to be higher as the depth became greater, while Limnodrilus spp. was also widely distributed, but with a peak value at a depth of 5.3 m in the shallowest station. From the submerged plant zone, Ophidonais serpentina (Müller, 1773) was collected. An earlier study by Hirabayashi & Hayashi (1994) showed that in 1985 the average density of aquatic oligochaetes was 435 ± 428 individuals m-2, oligochaetes dominated in only four locations and were distributed over the whole lake approximately equally. Comparisons of our data with the earlier studies have shown that oligochaete density has increased greatly according to Hirabayashi & Hayashi (1994). We suggest that a decrease in dissolved oxygen concentration of bottom water was due to an increase in organic matter content of the sediment. As a result, T. tubifex could expand their habitats in the profundal zone.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: The management of the cervical canal stenosis as a result of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is still evolving. Anterior and posterior approaches are still much in demand by the surgeons. In Japan, a posterior approach is more well-known to be used as the case OPLL is often on the populace. Single-door laminoplasty technique or “Hirabayashi” often used with either autograft or allograft, with or without an additional miniplate.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this case report, we would like to report the treatment of tetraparesis patients with “basket laminoplasty” using a special device with some advantages, not only providing stability of the lamina but also at the same time providing bone-graft container/basket for the benefit of the patient's bone fusion.
CONCLUSION: Basket laminoplasty device is an excellent choice for cervical OPLL. We believe the use of this device is very favourable for long-term patient outcome.

Abstract:
Rat embryonic stem (ES) cell lines can be established in culture medium containing inhibitors for glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK3) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MEK). We confirmed reproducibility of the 2i culture system in establishing rat ES cell lines (Hirabayashi et al. 2010 Mol. Reprod. Dev. 77, 94) and the likelihood of successful germline transmission (genuine) of rat ES cell lines established in leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF)- and forskolin (FK)-supplemented 2i medium (Hirabayashi et al. 2013 Transgenic Res. 22, 411–416). This study was designed to investigate whether LIF and/or FK supplemented to the 2i medium support establishment of germline-competent rat ES cell lines. E4.5 blastocysts were recovered from BLK rat females, and zona-free embryos were plated on mitomycin-treated mouse embryonic fibroblasts in N2B27 medium containing 1 mM MEK inhibitor PD0325901 and 3 mM GSK3 inhibitor CHIR99021, with rat 1000 U mL–1 LIF and/or 10 μM FK. Outgrowth rate of the blastocysts after 1 wk culture and establishment efficiency of ES cell lines after third passage were analyzed by Fisher's exact probability test. Arcsin-transformed percentage data on full-term development of ES cell-injected blastocysts, chimeric rat production, and germline-competent chimeras were analyzed by Fisher's least significant difference test after one-way ANOVA. Because of the higher outgrowth rates of blastocysts, supplementation of rat LIF, FK, or both contributed to the higher (P < 0.05) establishment efficiency of ES cell lines in BLK rat strain (76% to 92% v. 50% in LIF/FK-free 2i medium). Neither efficiency of producing chimeric rats (14% to 39% of blastocysts injected) nor germline transmission competency of the chimeric rats (67% to 100% of cell lines analyzed) was influenced by the pre-treatment of ES cell lines. When the LIF/FK-supplemented 2i medium was used, rat strain for blastocyst donor such as F344 or WI was a possible factor negatively influencing the establishment efficiency of ES cell lines. Once ES cell lines were established, however, all of them (9/9 in overall) were found to be germline-competent by progeny test of chimeric rats. In conclusion, both LIF and FK are not essential, but can play a beneficial role, for the establishment of genuine rat ES cell lines. This work was supported by a grant-in-aid for basic research from Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (No. 25290037; to M.H.).

Abstract:

Abstract:
The 45m radiotelescope of Nobeyama Radio Observatory (NRO) is now in operation. It has a surface accuracy of 0.2 mm (rms) and a pointing accuracy of 0.001 degrees. Two types of spectrometers were designed for the telescope. One type is an Acousto-Optical-Spectrometer (AOS) with a 16,384 channel, 2000 MHz full-bandwidth spectrometer, and a 8192 channel, 160 MHz full-bandwidth spectrometer. The other type is a direct Fourier transform type spectrometer called “FX”. One FX is designed for a 10 meter, 5 element supersynthesis interferometer and another for the 45m radio telescope. The “interferometer FX” is a spectro-correlator that processes 5 inputs of 320 MHz bandwidth signals into correlations with 1024 frequency channels. The “45m FX” has 4 sets of 10 MHz bandwidth, 1024 channel spectrometers. It has been pointed out by Morimoto, Hirabayashi, and Jugaku (1978) that formaldehyde anti-maser absorption lines in the direction of dark clouds would be suitable for SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence). The Nobeyama 45m radiotelescope is suited for such targeted deep SETI.
