Abstract:
The article analyzes the events that took place in Japan at the beginning of the 17th century, when the first English EICo mission arrived in the Land of the Rising Sun and founded a trading post in Hirado. It shows rivalry with other European traders, who, for various reasons, were ahead of the British in establishing trade relations with Japan. It was in the person of the Dutch that English merchants encountered not only serious competitors, but sometimes open enemies. The main directions of activity of the management of the trading post for the organization of trade expeditions to the markets of countries neighboring with Japan, such as Korea and China, as well as to Southeast Asia (Cochinhina, Siam) are highlighted. Shown is the work of Richard Cocks as the head of the EICo trading post in Hirado, who paid great attention to establishing relations with the Japanese authorities at all levels, primarily with the shogun government in Edo. Based on the versatile activities of R. Cocks as head of the trading post in Hirado, it is concluded that he sought to be useful not only to the EICo and the country as a whole, and the failure of the English trade enterprise in Japan was due to many objective and subjective reasons.

Abstract:
Abstract Starting in the second half of the sixteenth century, Japan, and especially Kyushu, experienced a surge in maritime exchange that was unprecedented in Japanese history. Alongside the boom in trade, there was a concurrent swell in maritime violence as pirates and privateers militarized East Asian waters. During this period, the port of Hirado on Kyushu emerged as one of the most important and consistently active pirate hubs, becoming a base for Chinese, Dutch, English, and Japanese mariners. This article explores Hirado’s long association with piracy and uses it to reflect on the changing nature of maritime violence in East Asia.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Silica-rich garronite-Na was found together with epistilbite in Miocene basaltic rock from Shiratobana, Hirado Island, Nagasaki Prefecture in Japan for the first time. Garronite-Na occurs as an anhedral crystal that covers the center of a small cavity in altered basaltic rock, whereas the epistilbite covers the inside of the cavity. Electron probe microanalysis of the garronite-Na gives an empirical formula of (Na1.99K0.27)Σ2.26Ca1.61(Fe0.01Al5.31Si10.64)Σ15.96O32·14.3H2O on the basis of O = 32. Its Na/Ca molar ratio varies from 1.00 to 1.53, and its unit-cell parameters (space group I2) calculated from X-ray powder diffraction data are a = 9.983(11) Å, b = 10.089(14) Å, c = 10.070(10) Å, and β = 90.223(3)° with a calculated density of 2.183 g/cm3. Garronite-Na from Hirado Island formed from an alkaline high-silica solution in the later stages of hydrothermal zeolitization associated with volcanic activity.

Abstract:
The comment in the title of this article was made by James I after having been shown a ‘long scrole of fyne paper’, probably a Japanese almanac, and an account of the estates and revenues of the daimyo ‘most of them equally or exceeding the revenues of the greatest princes of Christendom’, and a letter, all of which had been sent by Richard Cocks, head of the English East India Company's factory at Hirado during its entire existence from 1613 to 1623. Cocks's letter and the two enclosures had been sent to his patron, the then Keeper of the Records, Sir Thomas Wilson, who had shown the letter to James with a covering note stating that he had received it ‘from the most remote part of the world’. The letter describes, in considerable and acutely observed detail, the new capital of the Tokugawa shogunate, Edo, the shogun's magnificent retinue as he led a falcon-hunting party (hunting was a pastime he had in common with the British monarch), the greatdaibutsuof Kamakura, the sights of Kyoto, includingSanjusangendo, and recent political developments relating to the banishment of the Jesuits and friars. Wilson, rather obsequiously, felt that the letters, written in January 1617, ‘were a good recreation for Your Majesty (if you had any idle hours)’ and declared that ‘neither our cosmographers nor other writers have given us true relation of the greatness of the princes of those parts’. But James could ‘not be induced to believe’ what was written, and dismissed the letter as ‘the loudest lies that ever [he] heard of.

Abstract:
The Dutch East India Company was forced to move its factory in Japan from Hirado to Nagasaki by the order of the bakufu in 1641. Following that move, the Dutch were no longer allowed to freely go out into the city or to trade with city people. In order to have any contact with the people outside Deshima, they needed proper mediation of the Japanese officials. The interpreters (tolken, Oranda-tsūji, ) are well known as the intermediaries between the Japanese authorities and the Dutch residents of Deshima, but they were not the only ones who worked between the two sides. In this paper, I would like to deal with the Deshima Otona as the official responsible for the Dutch compound, and the compradoors, suppliers of the daily necessities for the Dutch factory, and to consider these officials within the context of the Nagasaki city system in order to compare this situation with that prevailing in Canton.Otona literally means “head” or “chief” and indicates a prominent member who is in charge of a certain group. In the cities of Edo-period Japan, the townspeople were controlled through their organisation in groups, which were given a considerable amount of autonomy. These groups consisted, in their turn, of members who were officially recognised by both the group organisation itself and the lord of the domain in which the city was located, because they owned a house, ran a family business, and performed some kind of public service (kuyaku, ).

Abstract:
Abstract The “Hirodo-kaze,” a local strong wind accompanying the downslope winds in Japan, is examined using a mesoscale numerical model. The model successfully reproduces the major features of the observed Hirodo-kaze that occurred in association with Typhoon Pabuk. During the Hirodo-kaze, the severe downslope winds in the transitional flow develop in the lower troposphere below the mean-state critical layer. The Hirodo-kaze is closely linked to the strong wind region accompanying the severe downslope winds. After the cessation of the Hirodo-kaze, distinct mountain waves dominate in the lower troposphere where the Scorer parameter l2 decreases with height. The region of strong wind retreats windward as the Hirodo-kaze ceases. Temporal changes in the characteristics of mountain waves in the lee of Mt. Nagi are primarily attributed to the changes in the large-scale environmental winds due to the movement of the intense cyclone. Environmental conditions favorable for the occurrence of the Hirodo-kaze include strong northerlies in the lower troposphere overlain by southerlies in the middle troposphere. The intense cyclone that moves over the sea southwest of the Kii peninsula creates favorable environmental conditions that support the occurrence of the Hirodo-kaze.

Abstract:
Purpose – This paper aims to examine a copy Hiraga Gennai wrote advertising the toothpowder brand Sosekiko in terms of its target audience, product decisions pertaining to branding and packaging, pricing and advertising objectives and message appeals. A masterless samurai in the eighteenth century, Hiraga Gennai is considered Japan’s first advertising copywriter. Life of the versatile Renaissance man Gennai and the influences of his accomplishments on advertising in following generations are briefly discussed. Design/methodology/approach – The research draws from a sampling of classical and contemporary literature as well as the interpretation of the images shown here. Visual content is described and analyzed as well. Findings – Gennai’s witty and humorous advertising copy for handbills attracted the townspeople of Edo. The toothpowder market was mature and competitive, and Gennai’s copy emphasized differentiation through packaging and volume discount rather than ingredients. The advertising copy has culturally unique aspect: It appeals to the audience’s ninjo, or feelings of humanity, and explicitly solicited disseminating positive word-of-mouth by the audience. Originality/value – This research shows that activities resembling more contemporary marketing practices, such as advertising and branding, for consumer products such as toothpowder existed in eighteenth-century Japan, more than a century prior to the paradigmatic development of marketing concept. The possibility for Gennai as a potential strategic marketing planner and implementer, in addition to advertising copywriter, is researched and analyzed.

Abstract:
AbstractTerrestrial carbonate deposits with a banded layer structure can be good tools for the extraction of past environmental information on global and local scales. The absolute age dating is most important for the reconstruction of an environmental chronicle. The terrestrial carbonate deposits(tufa) was collected at Hirao-dai Plateau in Fukuoka, Japan. Tufa has wide banded layers in which the growth rates are about a few mm a year. The activity of 137Cs that was a global or local fallout radionuclide was measured in each layer of the tufa sample. The absolute age was determined by the numbering of a banded layer and 137Cs activity profiles. The trace of the atomic bombing at Nagasaki was detected. The growth rate of the tufa is related to the environment of the year. The variations of a depositional condition of tufa sample were checked by some metal concentrations determined by neutron activation analysis. The relationship between the variation of environmental condition and the historical event at Hirao-dai was discussed using these metal concentration profiles.

Abstract Hayakawa, T., Hirano, H. 2013. A revised inoceramid biozonation for the Upper Cretaceous based on high-resolution carbon isotope stratigraphy in northwestern Hokkaido, Japan. Acta Geologica Polonica, 63 (2), 239-263. Warszawa. Biostratigraphic correlations of inoceramid bivalves between the North Pacific and Euramerican provinces have been difficult because the inoceramid biostratigraphy of the Japanese strata has been based on endemic species of the northwest Pacific. In this study, carbon stable isotope fluctuations of terrestrial organic matter are assembled for the Upper Cretaceous Yezo Group in the Haboro and Obira areas, Hokkaido, Japan, in order to revise the chronology of the inoceramid biozonation in Japan. The carbon isotope curves are correlated with those of marine carbonates in English and German sections with the aid of age-diagnostic taxa. According to the correlations of the carbon isotope curves, 11 isotope events are recognised in the sections studied. As a result of these correlations, the chronology of the inoceramid biozones of the Northwest Pacific has been considerably revised. The revised inoceramid biozones suggest that the timing of the origination and extinction of the inoceramids in the North Pacific biotic province is different from the stage/substage boundaries defined by inoceramids, as used in Europe and North America.

Abstract:
e15201 Background: Recently a phase III trial demonstrated that IAS was non-inferior to continuous AS in men with M0 disease after primary or salvage radiation and quality of life was better in the intermittent arm (Crook ASCO 2011). In that trial, men were treated with 8 months of AS followed by a variable time off AS driven by the absolute PSA value. The Hirata mathematical model describes the dynamics of prostate cancer treated with IAS (Hirata et al, J of Theoretical Biol 2010). In the model, there are three classes of cancer cells: a class of androgen dependent (AD) cells and two classes of androgen independent (AI:X1 and AI:X2) cells. During AS, AD cells will change to the two AI classes, and during the off treatment period, AI:X1 cells will revert to AD cells whereas AI:X2 cells cannot revert to either AD or AI:X1 cells. Methods: After IRB approval, we applied the Hirata model using serial monthly PSAs from men with M0 disease treated with IAS from Japan, Canada, and the United States. The proportions of men from each country who fell into the 3 categories of patients previously defined by the Hirata model were compared. Results: Serial PSAs from 26 men from Japan, 72 from Canada, and 79 from US were put into the model. The 3 categories of patients from the model include: (i) those with disease that will remain androgen sensitive and will respond to IAS without development of castration resistance (CRPC) (ii) those who will benefit from IAS but will develop CRPC sooner than those in group (i), (iii) those for whom continuous AS is superior to IAS. The datasets from each country show a similar distribution among the categories, and overall there were 42%, 51%, and 7% falling into groups i, ii, and iii respectively. Conclusions: This retrospective analysis shows that men with M0 disease treated with IAS fall into the 3 categories predicted by the Hirata model in similar proportions, regardless of country of origin. The ability to apply this model to the individual patient in the clinic is currently under development. The model may ultimately be able to optimize both the on and off treatment durations of IAS and to predict those patients who will most benefit from this approach.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract In 1624, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) arrived on the island of Taiwan and established a trading post there, which would continue to function until 1662. During this period, Dutch missionaries came to the island with the intention of proselytizing the indigenous Formosan peoples. They built churches and schools and translated Gospels and catechisms into Formosan languages. Over time, language policy changed and there was a concerted effort to teach the indigenous people Dutch. Many Chinese, including traders, fishermen and farmers, also went to Taiwan in this period. To support its investment on the island, the VOC implemented a system of tax-farming among the Chinese, who eventually numbered some 50,000. In this article, an attempt is made to analyse the linguistic consequences of contact between the Dutch on the one hand and the Formosans and Chinese on the other hand. The first of these is that the Dutch taught Formosans to write using a modified Roman script. The Formosans continued to use this script long after the Dutch had been expelled in 1662. Second, Dutch missionaries translated texts into two Formosan languages, Siraya and Favorlang. Since 1662, both languages have died out and so the Dutch texts are among the few sources which allow scholars to study these languages. Third, because of contact with Chinese tax-farmers, at least two Dutch loanwords have been adopted by local Sinitic varieties, both of which function as productive morphemes. Furthermore, one of these words has its own Chinese character. In short, this article aims to illustrate how contact with Dutch influenced other languages in Taiwan and thus to contribute to our understanding of the consequences of contact between Dutch and other languages in East Asia.

Abstract:
Insulin autoimmune syndrome (IAS) is a rare syndrome characterized by fasting or postprandial hypoglycemia, high levels of anti-insulin antibodies and high concentration of total serum immunoreactive insulin. It is relatively known in Japan, rare in remaining Asia and it is extremely uncommon in Western countries, being characterized by a different race-related incidence and associated with HLADR4 alleles. Usually IAS is related to particular drugs, or to autoimmune, rheumatologic or hematological diseases, while it is very rare as a primary form. Here we described a case of an Italian woman affected by a primary form of Hirata syndrome.

Abstract:
The terrestrial snail genus Ganesella Blanford, 1863, sensu lacto by Zilch (1959–1960), is mainly distributed in the Oriental region from Japan, through south of the Yangtze of China to South-east and South Asia. Most of these land snails are endemic species with narrow geographic distribution (Tryon 1888; Pilsbry 1894; Zilch 1959–1960, 1966; Richardson 1985, Chen & Gao 1987; Azuma 1995). The genus is characterized in having thin, smooth or weakly ridged shell, slightly descent body whorl in front, toothless aperture, expanded to reflected lips, long and narrow foot, long penis with a caecum (= penial appendix) and a flagellum. However, the anatomical characters of the type species, G. capitium Benson, 1848, are still wanting. A major part of its members have been assigned to different genus according to shell characters. The species in East-Asia, i.e., Japan, Korea and Taiwan, were assigned to the genus Satsuma (+ syn. Coniglobus Pilsbry & Hirase, 1906 and Luchuhadra Kuroda & Habe, 1949). About 100 species are still catalogued in Ganesella (Richardson 1985).

Abstract:
The Hiraiso Formation of northeast Japan represents an important and under-explored archive of Early Triassic marine ecosystems. Here, we present a palaeoecological analysis of its benthic faunas in order to explore the temporal and spatial variations of diversity, ecological structure and taxonomic composition. In addition, we utilise redox proxies to make inferences about the redox state of the depositional environments. We then use this data to explore the pace of recovery in the Early Triassic, and the habitable zone hypothesis, where wave aerated marine environments are thought to represent an oxygenated refuge. The age of the Hiraiso Formation is equivocal due to the lack of key biostratigraphical index fossils, but new ammonoid finds in this study support an early Spathian age. The ichnofossils from the Hiraiso Formation show an onshore-offshore trend with high diversity and relatively large faunas in offshore transition settings and a low diversity of small ichnofossils in basinal settings. The body fossils do not, however, record either spatial or temporal changes, because the shell beds represent allochthonous assemblages due to wave reworking. The dominance of small burrow sizes, presence of key taxa including Thalassinoides, Rhizocorallium and Holocrinus, presence of complex trace fossils, and both erect and deep infaunal tiering organisms suggests that the benthic fauna represents an advanced stage of ecological recovery for the Early Triassic, but not full recovery. The ecological state suggests a similar level of ecological complexity to late Griesbachian and Spathian communities elsewhere, with the Spathian marking a globally important stage of recovery following the mass extinction. The onshore-offshore distribution of the benthic faunas supports the habitable zone hypothesis. This gradient is, however, also consistent with onshore-offshore ecological gradients known to be controlled by oxygen gradients in modern tropical and subtropical settings. This suggests that the habitable zone is not an oxygenated refuge that is only restricted to anoxic events. The lack of observed full recovery is likely a consequence of a persistent oxygen-limitation (dysoxic conditions), hot Early Triassic temperatures and the lack of a steep temperature/water-depth gradient within the habitable zone.

Abstract:
Unforced errors are a significant issue in producing high performance in tennis. Identifying the causes of these errors in important to guide interventions to reduce unforced errors. The purpose of this study was to examine the different causes of unforced errors (UE) of Women’s Collegiate tennis players from the perspectives of coaches and players. Specifically, and based on previous research (Hirata, Sato, Murakami, Sato, & Saijo, in press; Shibahara, Tamaki, Hirata, Sonobe, Morii, & Saijo, 2015), a measure was developed to collect data on UE. The factor structure was examined using data collected from 283 Collegiate women tennis players and 77 coaches of women tennis players. These participants were divided into High-Skilled (HS) and Low- Skilled (LS), where the criteria for such selection was based in the competition level played in different Competitions. In order to access the HS competition, players needed to be winners of the LS competition. Comparing and contrasting both groups are in the basis of the current research study.
