Abstract:
The complex system of subterranean passages at Montesquieu-Avantès in the foothills of the central French Pyrenees through which the River Volp flows is conventionally divided into three caves, Le Tuc d'Audoubert to the west, Les Trois-Frères in the centre and Enlène to the east. While the east two are connected by a narrow corridor, no usable passage connects Tuc d'Audoubert with Trois-Frères and the only current means of access is by boat. At Tuc d'Audoubert the galleries lie on three levels, the lowest carrying the River Volp, the ‘median’ with decorated galleries (La Salle Nuptiale, La Galerie des Gravures) and the upper with further decoration (La Chatière, Salle des Talons) terminating in the Salle des Bisons containing the celebrated modelled clay bison (Bégouën and Clottes 1984b). The position of Trois-Frères and Enlène approximates to the upper level of Tuc d'Audoubert. Trois-Frères has numerous galleries with several possible original entrances, although the only certain Magdalenian access was through Enlène. Whereas Trois-Frères contains one of the most prolific arrays of wall art (Galerie des Mains, Chapelle de la Lionne, Galerie des Points, Salle du Grand-Eboulis, Sanctuaire, Galerie des Chouettes, Galerie de l'Hémione), Enlène has none. However excavations at Enlène have revealed a considerable range of engraved bones and stone plaquettes from occupation deposits (Bégouën and Clottes 1984a).

Abstract The brevity of this note by Paul Ricoeur belies its impact, as a version of the famous challenge he delivered to Heidegger upon his first arrival in France at the Cerisy-la-Salle conference in 1955. Why has Heidegger passed over the Judaic tradition? He pays such close attention to the Greeks and their questioning of being, and yet what about the prophetic tradition and the ethical dimensions it inspires? Are these not an essential part of the Western tradition? Heidegger dismissed Ricoeur’s challenge at the time and never arrived at any answers in his later career. And yet this step is absolutely necessary, claims Ricoeur, if one hopes to rethink the Christian tradition, and indeed, Western philosophy.

Abstract:
Homogeneous liquid–liquid extraction (HLLE) has attracted considerable interest in the sample preparation of multi-analyte analysis. In this study, HLLEs of multiple phenolic compounds in propolis, a polyphenol-enriched resinous substance collected by honeybees, were performed for improving the understanding of the differences in partition efficiencies in four acetonitrile–water-based HLLE methods, including salting-out assisted liquid–liquid extraction (SALLE), sugaring-out assisted liquid–liquid extraction (SULLE), hydrophobic-solvent assisted liquid–liquid extraction (HSLLE), and subzero-temperature assisted liquid–liquid extraction (STLLE). Phenolic compounds were separated in reversed-phase HPLC, and the partition efficiencies in different experimental conditions were evaluated. Results showed that less-polar phenolic compounds (kaempferol and caffeic acid phenethyl ester) were highly efficiently partitioned into the upper acetonitrile (ACN) phase in all four HLLE methods. For more-polar phenolic compounds (caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, isoferulic acid, dimethoxycinnamic acid, and cinnamic acid), increasing the concentration of ACN in the ACN–H2O mixture could dramatically improve the partition efficiency. Moreover, results indicated that NaCl-based SALLE, HSLLE, and STLLE with ACN concentrations of 50:50 (ACN:H2O, v/v) could be used for the selective extraction of low-polarity phenolic compounds. MgSO4-based SALLE in the 50:50 ACN–H2O mixture (ACN:H2O, v/v) and the NaCl-based SALLE, SULLE, and STLLE with ACN concentrations of 70:30 (ACN:H2O, v/v) could be used as general extraction methods for multiple phenolic compounds.

Abstract:
“Reflections on a Manual” was Roland Barthes's contribution to the colloquium “The Teaching of Literature” held at Cerisy-la-Salle in 1969. Organized by Tzvetan Todorov and Serge Doubrovsky, the Cerisy gathering featured other prominent theorists, like Gérard Genette and A. J. Greimas, whose concerns Barthes addresses and adapts to his own purposes in this paper. Reading manuals of the history of French literature as texts whose grammar is organized by a set of oppositions, he conducts a structuralist enterprise that becomes an inquiry into the myths enabling societies to create and preserve their identities. Barthes's reflections on the teaching of literature recall some of the major works that punctuate the phases of his career, from Mythologies (1957) to “Introduction to the Structural Analysis of Narrative” (1966) to The Pleasure of the Text (1973).

Abstract:
This article explores what we have called the “paradoxical spiritual void” in the delivery rooms of Quebec. If it seems evident that birth is an intense human experience that has had a spiritual dimension for a very long time, this dimension remains largely unexplored in the contemporary context. First, we set out our working hypothesis: 1) by defining its paradoxical aspect emerging from the actual medical context; 2) by trying to get a better grasp of the term spiritual so as to make it reflect the originality of the actual religious and spiritual context; and 3) by illustrating the void by way of the silence of literature on the topic. Then, we enlarge on the practical aspects of the research conducted by the multidisciplinary group SPIrituality and Birth (in French: SPIN) on the spirituality of parents during the birth of their child, which has so far led to: 1) a multidisciplinary meeting of experts (medical, theological, parental) using two analytical frameworks (Galek et al., 2005; Hall, 2001); and 2) a first categorization of types of spiritual experience that can be lived by parents during birth. We conclude by specifying measures that should reduce the resistance met by the medical world concerning the SPIN project and its future developments.

Abstract:
The history of the seventh art has steadfastly developed throughout the last century. The multiplication of means of broadcasting pictures can be called a landmark in so far as it involves increasing demand and a more individual viewing of films. The movie theatre however remains a major mode of exploitation in spite of the three following phenomena : weaker attendance, more specific attendance and increasing american influence. Such parameters demand adaptation of the legal system to the economic data of the film market. This arrangement is twofold : the first aspect is inherent in the acknowledgement of the part played by the different partners while they purchase and hand over the right of exploitation. The second one to be taken into account lies in who the film is aimed at with a view to winning over new spectators within the nation and increasing the market

Portela, Sotelo Miguel Alfredo. Thesis, Lyon 1, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011LYO10260.

Abstract:
The various professionals (oncologists, medical physicists, radiation therapist, etc.) involved in the treatment of cancer by radiation therapy express more and more acutely a real need to have a global view of the treatment system in order to monitor the patient and all the equipment in the room — be it mobile (or even robotized) or not — to improve patient safety. This global view would help reduce the number of human interventions, errors in physical interaction (involuntary movements, collisions, etc.), and errors in the global configuration for the patient. To answer this need, this PhD manuscript presents a videosurveillance module using a numerical model of the elements in the scene (patient, couch, irradiation arm, etc.) to monitor the movement of these elements in order to avoid any event that could put the patient, staff or equipment in danger. Monitoring the treatment room means checking, at any moment, that its current configuration is consistent with what was planned upstream (in the Treatment Planning System [TPS]) and with the standards of radiotherapy, and if need be to, to inform the medical staff, so that correcting actions may be undertaken. We have developed a generic model which allows the creation of numerical models from the data contained in the patient record (in the TPS), enriched with other visual, geometric and “semantic” information. All the numerical models used to create a virtual environment correspond to the scene as seen by video cameras. Location and orientation of the elements are calculated by 3D registration, a choice justified by the characteristics of radiation treatment rooms (controlled environment, low dynamics, highly constrained construction specifications, very similar treatment rooms, etc.). The (geometric, physical and mechanical) information items in the model allow to reduce the overall complexity of the algorithms. The method for motion tracking we have implemented exploits the characteristics and constraints of the elements included in the numerical model, specifically the “descriptors” which correspond to the 3D modeling of primitives used to track the element in the video stream. We also present a dissimilarity function that we have defined, resulting from the merging of two well-known dissimilarity functions, respectively based on the chamfer distance and the notion of non-overlap. A fuzzy formalism improves the robustness of the method against the noise generated by acquisition and processing. When the treatment session takes place, the module evaluates the current configuration (positions acquired for elements, using the tracking module and global parameters of the scene), to interact with medical staff in relation to what has been defined in pretreatment. We present results of tests performed in a radiotherapy room but in the absence of irradiation and patient (the patient was either replaced by a phantom positioned on the couch or by one researcher playing his/her role). These results demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of the surveillance module

Abstract:
Space constraints often present the greatest challenge in determining the lay-out of specific radiotherapy installations. To fulfill these constraints high density concrete is often employed in construction. We have undertaken a study to establish the transmission of primary, leakage and scatter radiation through a particular type of high density concrete. In the course of this study various characteristics of leakage and scatter radiation from a 10 MV linac have also been investigated. The results of these studies are reported in this thesis.
To establish the correct chamber configuration required for the characterization of the transmission factors for primary, leakage and scatter radiation and to determine the scatter-to-incidence dose ratio a, we have measured the build-up curves and verified the validity of the inverse square law for these different radiations. The build-up data for the radiation scattered from a humanoid phantom at different angles from the primary axis have shown that even at low scatter angles little to no build-up is required for scatter radiation measurements.

Abstract:
We are studying wireless OFDM communications using a 60 GHz carrier, for multimedia application in relatively large rooms. This environment may require that relays are used to repeat signals in order to realise the communications. The line of sight communication may be not possible because of walking people. The walls of the room are considered as reflecting incoming waves, without diffraction. To resolve the possibility of line of sight message being lost, messages are repeated, either by the relays or by the source. In the first part of the document, the advantage that these repetitions may bring to the error correction will be studied. It will be demonstrated that when the receiver collects several repetitions, the capacity is raising. In a second part, we will study if the repetitions can be simply the multiple trajectories of waves due to the rebound on walls. A technique to control the multiple trajectories can be devised, but today there is a limit since it may affect the analogue to digital conversion. Finally, we will discuss antennas capable of driving these controlled multiple trajectories and relays simultaneously. Surprisingly, we will see that beam forming antennas are not necessarily better candidates than sector antennas. A sector antenna capable of working in our environment will be defined

Abstract:
This chapter examines the arrival of French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, at Kaskaskia. Of the Roman Catholic religious orders that labored in New France during the time of La Salle, the Jesuits were the most influential. With the Jesuits now situated as sole representative to King and Cross at Kaskaskia, and by extension the Illinois Country, Claude-Jean Allouez and his Jesuit associates were prepared to do whatever was necessary to keep secular influences away from the lands and the people whose souls the order worked so diligently to save. This included turning the Illinois Indians against La Salle. Without the support of the Illinois, there was little chance that La Salle's enterprise could succeed, because the explorer's royal patent permitted him to trade only in bison hides, and the Illinois were bison hunters. In addition, it appears that Allouez was prepared to turn Native American against Native American. The chapter then considers why the Iroquois attacked the Illinois at Kaskaskia, and what the implications were for La Salle and French policy in the West.

Abstract:
In Manitoba, the Main (100) Line operated by TransCanada PipeLines Ltd. (TCPL) comprises six natural gas pipelines ranging from 864 mm to 1219 mm in diameter. These pipelines cross the La Salle River at Main Line Valve (MLV) 39+6.06, approximately 3 km south of St. Norbert, Manitoba. A rupture in Line 100-2 occurred at this crossing site on April 15, 1996. Investigations of the site following the line break concluded that ground movement associated with the east approach slope was likely a contributing factor in the failure of Line 100-2. It was postulated that the observed slope instability was attributable, at least in part, to a combination of the low shear strength of Lake Agassiz clay and artesian pore pressures associated with the underlying regional Upper Carbonate Aquifer (UCA), controlled in part by groundwater pumping within the City of Winnipeg. Based on the findings from the initial slope stability analyses, a more detailed deformation analysis was proposed to examine the influence of hydrogeological conditions on deformation and slope stability at the La Salle site. The numerical analyses were conducted using FLAC2D, a two-dimensional explicit finite difference code for engineering mechanics computation. The code simulates the pre- and post-peak behaviour of geological and other materials based on specified material properties, constitutive models, and failure criteria. The deformation analysis has identified the key factors controlling stability of the east approach slope at the La Salle site, and has provided insight into probable failure mechanisms. High pressures in the UCA increase the risk of sudden large-scale slope failure at the slope toe at critical times during the year, e.g., after rapid drawdown following the spring flood, and following the drop in river level in late fall to winter levels. The analysis indicated that the risk of slope instability at this site can be reduced by lowering the aquifer pressure locally in the vicinity of the east approach slope at critical times in the year. The results of the study have demonstrated the usefulness of employing deformation analysis as a means of understanding the key factors controlling slope stability at a particular site. The approach is also compatible with the development of a comprehensive soil/pipe interaction methodology that integrates the results of ongoing in situ monitoring into pipe stress analyses.

Abstract:
The collapse of the Soviet Union marked the beginning of the difficult deconstruction of the regime and ideology which controlled the East for the majority of the 20th Century. In the Republic of Georgia, Soviet collapse catalyzed a series of ethnically prompted conflicts and civil war which prevented the unification of the country under a national agenda, thus creating fertile ground for corruption, privatization and sale of public space. The earliest example of the corrupt transfer of property was the sale of the former Palace of Rituals, in Tbilisi, to Georgian oligarch Badri Patarkatsishvili, which is still primarily used as a private residence by his family. After the Rose Revolution in 2003, Georgia faced rapid institutional reforms under President Mikheil Saakashvili, who legitimized his regime by unifying regions that continuously identified as Georgian (excluding territories Abkhazia and S. Ossetia), collecting revenues via taxation, and attracting the foreign investment that Georgia desperately neede
