Abstract:
The population percentage, population growth, buying power, and geographic concentration of Hispanic-Americans in the United States is causing marketers and retailers to carefully examine this market segment. Through a better understanding of Hispanic-American consumers, marketers and retailers will be more capable of meeting their wants and needs. Tailoring marketing promotions and strategies can help a company more effectively reach the Hispanic-American market. This study compared Hispanic-Americans and Anglo-Americans in their general shopping characteristics, responses to excitement in the mall, consumption patterns, and repatronage intention. A total of seven hypotheses were developed, all of which were either supported or partially supported.

Abstract:
Reducing diabetes risk among Hispanic-American adults in the United States is a critical public health need and programs targeting young Hispanic-American adults with prediabetes can reduce the risk for developing diabetes. The purpose of this project was twofold: (a) to examine the literature related to diabetes prevention best practices among young adult Hispanic-Americans with prediabetes and (b) create an intervention program to promote these best practices to delay or reverse the trajectory toward diabetes. The inclusion criteria for the literature review were studies with at least a 12-month follow-up and reported outcomes related to changes in diet, increased exercise, and the effects of psychotherapy as modeled in the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP). Studies that met these inclusion criteria for the period 2002 through January 2016 were evaluated and 11 studies supported the development of recommendations for future implementation. Pender's health promotion model provided useful theoretical support for the effectiveness of individual health behavior changes to reduce the risk of developing diabetes. Based on the literature review, proposed interventions included dietary interventions, behavior modifications, and both aerobic and resistance exercise training adapted for the young adult Hispanic-American population. The planned interventions will fill an evidence-to-practice gap in application of the DPP. The program when implemented will promote social change through lifestyle modifications among young adult Hispanic-Americans with prediabetes and is expected to improve dietary intake, weekly exercise, fasting glucose, and glucose tolerance and support weight loss, all of which can delay or stop progression to diabetes.

Haynes, Robert Michael. "A Predictive Model of Hispanic Participation in Texas Higher Education: Inferences Drawn from Institutional Data in Prevalent Hispanic States." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2009. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc11036/.

Full text
Abstract:
In Texas, Hispanic populations (people of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race) have increased from 6.7 million in 2000 to 7.4 million in 2005, or by approximately 10.5%. This growth trend is expected to continue with estimates that Hispanics will represent approximately 37% of the state's population by 2015. The problem this research addressed is that participation in higher education by Texas Hispanics is not keeping pace with the growth in the Texas Hispanic population. If allowed to continue, the state could be in danger of realizing devastating economic and societal consequences. The present study utilized regression analysis to determine how well four institutional characteristics explained the variance in Hispanic enrollment and graduation percentages of students attending public 4-year institutions in states with prevalent Hispanic populations. Findings indicate that while local Hispanic population is a strong, positive predictor of Hispanic enrollments, it has a negative impact on Hispanic graduation rates. The independent variables of average cost of attendance and average financial aid package are the strongest predictors of Hispanic graduation percentages. Implications for the state of Texas include stress on public 4-year institutions in coping with Hispanic population increases, possible enrollment overflows at the community college level, and need for additional allocations to state and institutional financial aid programs.

Sitton, Nelson. "Health Disparities among Hispanic Americans with Type 2 Diabetes." ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/4987.

Full text
Abstract:
The ongoing increase in Type 2 diabetes among Hispanic Americans challenges the American public health system, particularly with health issues arising from not following appropriate health directives for the disease. This quantitative, cross-sectional, correlational study used primary data to assess the relationship between diabetes knowledge (as measured by the Diabetes Knowledge Questionnaire), health literacy level (as measured by the Short Assessment of Health Literacy-Spanish and English), education level, self-efficacy (as measured by the Diabetes Self-efficacy questionnaire), and self-reported diabetes self-care behaviors (as measured by the Summary of Diabetes Self-care Activities) among a sample of Hispanic Americans with Type 2 diabetes. A combination of the Orem's Theory of self-care and the Bandura's social cognitive theory (SCT) guided this study. The sample included 96 diabetic Hispanic Americans aged 18 and older residing in Fairfax County, VA. Multiple linear regression analysis showed a statistically significant relationship between diabetes knowledge, education level, health literacy, self-efficacy, and self-reported diabetes self-care behaviors. The score of the self-reported diabetes self-care behaviors was related at statistically significant levels to the score of diabetes knowledge (rs = 0.5230, p = 0.00), to the score of education level (rs = 0.2831, p = 0.01), to the score of health literacy level (rs = 0.6332, p = 0.00), and to the score of self-efficacy (rs = 0.7783, p = 0.00). The results of this research study could contribute to positive social change by providing the public health workforce in Fairfax County, VA with insights for developing culturally sensitive education programs that best fit the needs of Hispanics and fight against Type 2 diabetes.

Hoar, Mariana. "Racial Microaggressions: Relationship to Cardiovascular Reactivity and Affect Among Hispanic/Latinos and Non-Hispanic Whites." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2015. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc804968/.

Full text
Abstract:
Racial microaggressions are a type of perceived discrimination entailing a brief pejorative message by a perpetrator, whether verbal or nonverbal, intentional or unintentional, about a target person that operates below the level of conscious awareness. Research supports a relationship between perceived discrimination and worse mental and physical health outcomes, with the literature centered mainly on non-Hispanic blacks. Less research exists on how perceived discrimination, specifically racial microaggressions, affects the mental and physical health of Hispanic/Latinos. This study examined how exposure to racial microaggressions, using an experimental design whereby a confederate delivers two types of racial microaggressions, influences affect and cardiovascular reactivity (CVR) among Hispanic/Latinos and non-Hispanic whites. Results revealed that the experience of racial microaggressions did not evoke larger and longer lasting emotional and physiological arousal among Hispanic/Latinos and non-Hispanic Whites. Future directions are discussed.
