Abstract:
Background: Lepromatous leprosy is a clinical course seen in patients with inefficient cellular immunity against Mycobacterium leprae, resulting in anergy. A highly bacilliferrous type of lepromatous leprosy is histoid leprosy. Histoid leprosy was initially reported to manifest after the failure of long-term dapsone monotherapy, irregular therapy, or inadequate therapy. However, it is now well known that histoid leprosy develops de-novo as well. This study was undertaken to know the incidence and clinicopathological characteristics of lepromatous leprosy and histoid leprosy.Materials and Metho

Histoid Leprosy is a variant of lepromatous leprosy with characteristic clinical and histopathological features. Usually it is occured in lepromatous patients who relaps after dapsone monotherapy, in those with dapsone resistance , sometimes even after multidrug treatment, or at times, de novo with characteristic clinical and histopathological features. ABSTRACTHistoid leprosy is a rare form of multibacillary leprosy with distinct clinical and histopathological features. It is a variant of lepromatous leprosy. It occurs in lepromatous patients, who relapse after dapsone monotherapy, in the presence of dapsone resistance or at times ′de-novo′. We describe here a case of histoid leprosy, clinically mimicking neurofibromatosis.

Abstract Histoid leprosy (HL) is a rare variant of lepromatous leprosy (LL) which is a highly transmissible disease. Here, we describe a de novo case of histoid leprosy. This variant typically arises in multibacillary patients who have received irregular or insufficient treatment for lepromatous leprosy. Its distinctive clinical presentation makes diagnosis challenging, potentially delaying treatment and contributing to the persistence of the disease as an endemic condition. So biopsy and histopathological examination are essential for the accurate diagnosis of histoid leprosy

Abstract:
Histoid leprosy is a rare variant of leprosy with distinctive immunological, clinical, microbiological, and histological characteristics first described by Wade in the year 1963. This is usually reported following dapsone monotherapy, irregular or improper therapy, and rarely de novo. Early diagnosis and treatment of histoid is important as it might serve as a reservoir and source of community spread of leprosy. In this article, we highlight the important aspects of clinical manifestations, immunological, histological, bacteriological, and management aspects of histoid leprosy.

This thesis investigates the colonial organisation of leprosy care in Samoa from 1890 to 1922. It begins with the examination of the nineteenth century “Three Power” governments of Germany, United States of America and Great Britain over Samoa, and moves on to a study of German rule beginning in 1900 and New Zealand administration from 1914. It analyses colonial politics alongside the medical changes and exchanges of ideas about race, health and disease which dominated the direction of leprosy care in Samoa. The thesis also aims to demonstrate the ways in which care for leprosy sufferers developed as the disease became more prevalent and more commonly, and correctly identified. It analyses the social stigmas inflicted upon sufferers, and the medical care and attention provided for them by religious institutions when other groups or organisations shunned those suffering from leprosy. Since the 1940s, many clinical studies have consistently shown that the BCG vaccine offers some level of protection but ranging between 18% and 90%. Throughout this time, different versions of BCG and new developments have resulted in new leprosy vaccine candidates and prevention strategies. Stigma is a common human reaction to disease. Throughout history many diseases have carried considerable stigma, including leprosy, tuberculosis, cancer, mental illness, and many sexually transmitted diseases. HIV/AIDS is only the latest disease to be stigmatized. The studies selected met stringent evaluation criteria in order to draw common lessons for future development of interventions
