RésumésDécrivant les grandes tendances de la recherche allemande récente sur la Shoah, cet article montre l’intérêt nouveau pour les acteurs du meurtre et la mise en place d’une histoire sociale et culturelle des bourreaux. L’historiographie du nazisme a en outre pour ambition de prendre en compte toutes les dimensions de la politique de répression nazie. Elle s’intéresse ainsi tant aux criminels qu’aux Tziganes, aux politiques de mise à mort qu’à celles de déportation. Cette nouvelle historiographie trouve sa véritable spécificité dans une série d’études locales sur les politiques d’occupation et des processus d’extermination intervenus en Europe de l’Est occupée. Fondées sur des explorations archivistiques très complètes, un empirisme déclaré et une reconstruction très minutieuse des événements, ces études posent le problème de l’échelle des processus de décision, de la marge de manoeuvre des acteurs sur le terrain et de l’hypothèse d’un consentement européen à la Shoah.

Jo Wajsblat, więzień Auschwitz-Birkenau, w wieku 15 lat został uratowany z komory gazowej. Cudownie ocalony przez ponad 50 lat nie opowiedział nikomu swojej traumatycznej historii. Dopiero po tak długim okresie czasu zdecydował się dać świadectwo i we współpracy z dziennikarzem Gillesem Lambertem napisał autobiografi ę Nieprzewidziany świadek (Le témoin imprévu). Po pół wieku milczenia było to zadanie niezwykle trudne z uwagi na luki w pamięci, wątpliwości, a przede wszystkim konieczność powrotu do bolesnych wspomnień. Konstrukcja tekstu różni się od większości znanych świadectw po Shoah, ponieważ autor zastosował głównie narrację trzecioosobową, rzadko spotykaną w dokumentach osobistych. Chwyt ten sprawia, że tę autobiografi ę można określić jako „biografi ę samego siebie”, w której Wajsblat opowiada swoją historię głosem „Innego”. Jest to szczególny sposób zmierzenia się z własną historią i jednocześnie próba uwiarygodnienia „niewiarygodnej” historii.

Reflections on History and Literature Pierre-Emmanuel Dauzat discusses the relationship between history and literature on the Shoah, in particular through an analysis of Jonathan Littells highly successful novel, published initially in France and translated in other European countries. Looking back at earlier books on the same theme that failed to attract any attention, he concludes that Littells novel marks a new phase, with the Shoah seen through the person of the «executioner». RésuméPour appréhender l’essence de la controverse qu’a suscitée le débat autour du « postsionisme » au cours de la décennie passée en Israël, il est nécessaire de s’attarder en premier lieu sur les structures de la production du savoir historique dans les universités israéliennes. Dès sa création, l’université hébraïque de Jérusalem d’abord, suivie par toutes les universités d’Israël, instaura la division univoque des domaines de recherche du passé : d’une part, les départements d’« histoire générale » et, de l’autre, les départements d’« histoire juive », sans liens institutionnels entre eux. Aucun historien professionnel formé au sein de ces départements d’histoire juive ne s’est trouvé aux premiers rangs des contestataires de l’historiographie officielle. On y retrouve surtout des orientalistes, des politologues, des sociologues et même des linguistes, amenés à engager et gérer ce dur débat. Quelles furent donc les conséquences de cette donnée d’ordre institutionnel sur la gestion même du débat ? L’article, dont l’objectif est de cerner les thèmes sur lesquels on a fait des percées majeures, amorce une tentative de cartographie des axes d’articulation de la controverse : 1) les conditions du déroulement de la guerre de 1948 ; 2) les positions et actions des dirigeants sionistes face à la Shoah et à ses survivants, ainsi que vis-à-vis des immigrés des pays islamiques ; 3) la nature de la colonisation, dès la fin du XIXe siècle ; 4) les représentations officielles du passé juif en tant qu’histoire nationale.

Abstract:
The Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw was probably the only research institution in the Soviet Bloc and one of very few that undertook research on the Shoah during the 1950s. This article analyses the institute’s research and working conditions against the background of the general political regime under Stalinism in Poland. It argues that despite sometimes heavy-handed political biases in its publications, the institute made an important contribution to research on the Shoah. Its work also came to the attention of Jewish centers outside the Soviet Bloc, though it was seen through the prism of the Cold War.

ResumenEl Memorial de la Shoah en Milán es un buen ejemplo de museografía contemporánea. En este documento se analiza la importancia de este tipo de museos para aclarar los periodos más oscuros de nuestra reciente historia y, así, enseñar valores de paz a las generaciones futuras. Si bien la museografía de este Memorial nos cuenta el cruel relato de las deportaciones de judíos y presos políticos durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, también el edificio de la estación de trenes es en sí una pieza de museo, porque conserva las huellas de las deportaciones en su misma estructura. Es uno de los pocos casos en Europa en donde coinciden contenedor, museo y contenido museográfico. Palabras clave: Shoah, indiferencia, memorial, memoria, museo, museografía. AbstractThe Memorial of the Shoah in Milan is a good example of contemporary museography. This document analyzes the importance of this type of museums to clarify the darkest periods of our recent history and, thus, teach values of peace to future generations. Although the museography of this Memorial tells us the cruel story of the deportations of Jews and political prisoners during the Second World War, the building of the train station is itself a museum piece, because it keeps the traces of deportations in its structure. Abstract:
The article is devoted to the analysis of testimonies, accounts, memoirs, ego-documents by concentration camp prisoners of Auschwitz, Majdanek, Stutthof, and Gross-Rosen. Thesource material kept in the said KLs’ archives contains a multitude of individual histories of survivors of the genocide, either described in detail or concisely noted down. What the authorfocuses on is the variety of those testimonies to suffering and tragedy of people incarcerated in concentration camps. At the same time, she observes that for the former prisoners, decades after leaving the camps, the Shoah and hell are synonymous with genocide. The most common terms used by them to describe genocide are: mass extermination, the Holocaust, Annihilation, hell, the Shoah, hideous violence, total annihilation – both physical and moral.

RésumésL’objectif de cet article est de proposer un examen détaillé des apports et des limites de la modélisation en histoire à partir du cas de la Shoah. Il s’appuie sur une enquête qui a permis de reconstituer les « trajectoires de persécution » des 992 Juifs de Lens pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, dont 527 seulement ont survécu. 491 ont été arrêtés, 468 ont été déportés et 449 ont été exterminés. Les données prosopographiques sont utilisées ici pour répondre à une question simple : est-il possible de modéliser la persécution ? En d’autres termes, est-il possible de construire une représentation simplifiée mais heuristique des processus causaux complexes qui ont déterminé les chances de survie face à la persécution nazie à partir de données standardisées sur un nombre relativement important d’individus ? L’article discute les apports et les limites d’une succession de méthodes quantifiées : celles qui s’inscrivent dans ce qu’Andrew Abbott appelle le « programme standard » des sciences sociales, ainsi que l’analyse des réseaux et l’analyse séquentielle. Pour chacune d’entre elles, sont plus particulièrement discutées les manières de rendre compte des interactions entre les individus, de l’historicité des comportements et des processus déterminant ces chances de survie. Les tentatives de modélisation à partir de données historiennes apportent ainsi de véritables renouvellements de connaissances, notamment lorsqu’elles sont menées de manière cumulative sur une même enquête. En passant d’une logique de propriétés individuelles à une logique de trajectoires interconnectées, ces approches permettent de mieux comprendre les interactions sociales et locales, et offrent ainsi des perspectives stimulantes pour la microhistoire de l’Holocauste.

Abstract:
This essay traces ways in which traumatic Shoah witness testimonies fit into German history curricula conceptually by highlighting the competencies with which pupils are meant to grasp the topic of National Socialism and the Holocaust. Such curricula are diverse and they keep the learning objectives and teaching methods pertaining to emotions, imagination and ethical dimensions - as relevant to the topic - abstractly vague. This poses certain challenges and opportunities for history teachers and pupils. One such opportunity is the incorporation of virtual video-graphed Shoah witness testimonies that by their nature are emotional as they narrate traumatic memories. The opportunity in such narrations lies in assigning the function of tertiary witnessing to pupils and this process is briefly described. The challenges of using such oral histories can be understood as those that clash with the non-discursively organised knowledge in pursuit of truth (verifiable facts) by means of what is traditionally considered historical evidence.

Abstract:
The percentage of victimization of Dutch Jewry during the Shoah is the highest of Western, Central and Southern Europe (except, perhaps of Greece), and close to the Polish one: 75%, more than 104.000 souls. The question of disproportion between the apparent favorable status of the Jews in society – they had acquired emancipation in 1796 - and the disastrous outcome of the Nazi occupation as compared to other countries in general and Western European in particular has haunted Dutch historiography of the Shoah. Who should be blamed for that outcome: the perpetrators, i.e. the Germans, the bystanders, i.e. the Dutch or the victims, i.e. the Dutch Jews? The article first surveys the answers given to this question since the beginnings of Dutch Holocaust historiography in the immediate post-war period until the debates of today and the factors that influenced the shaping of some basic perceptions on “Dutch society and the Jews”. It then proceeds to detailing several facts from the Holocaust period that are essential for an evaluation of gentile attitudes. The article concludes with the observation that – in spite of ongoing debates – the overall picture which has accumulated after decades of research will not essentially being altered. Although the Holocaust was initiated, planned and carried out from Berlin, and although a considerable number of Dutchmen helped and hid Jews and the majority definitely despised the Germans, considerable parts of Dutch society contributed to the disastrous outcome of the Jewish lot in the Netherlands – through a high amount of servility towards the German authorities, through indifference when Jewish fellow-citizens were persecuted, through economically benefiting from the persecution and from the disappearance of Jewish neighbors, and through actual collaboration (stemming from a variety of reasons). Consequently, the picture of the Holocaust in the Netherlands is multi-dimensional, but altogether puzzling and not favorable.
