Abstract:
The question of the finest structure of nerve cells over the past years has attracted the attention of many histologists and neuropathologists. In this direction, very interesting studies have already been carried out in various types of invertebrates and vertebrates, and only regarding birds, as far as I know, there has not yet been more or less detailed research on this topic. True, in the works of some authors there are brief references on this issue, but there are very few such references and these works relate almost exclusively to the period preceding the last studies by Nissl and other authors, who shed new light on the structure of nerve cells.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the history of the formation and development of the Rostov branch of the Scientific Medical Society of Anatomists, Histologists and Embryologists (SMSAHE) of Russia. The Rostov branch of the society originates from the Scientific Society of Anatomy and Anthropology, the first meeting of which took place on September 15, 1921. The leading role in the formation of the branch belongs to the graduate of the Military Medical Academy, Head of the Department of Normal Anatomy of the Don University (currently Rostov State Medical University), Professor Konstantin Yatsuta. Honorary members of the society were well-known Russian anatomists - professors Vladimir Vorobyov, Pyotr Karuzin, Vladimir Tonkov and Viktor Shevkunenko. At all stages of the activity of the scientific society, the continuity of generations, the preservation and enhancement of knowledge in the field of anatomy and histology can be traced. The scientific achievements of the members of the department during the centuries of history are reflected. The main scientific areas of activity of the Rostov Department in different periods were comparative, age and veterinary anatomy, histology and embryology, the study of the cardiovascular system in health and in some diseases, as well as the anatomical variability of organs using modern methods of medical imaging. Throughout the years of work, representatives of the Rostov branch took an active part in the work of the All-Union, and then the All-Russian Congresses of Anatomists, Histologists and Embryologists, scientific international conferences, congresses, symposiums, developed international cooperation in the field of morphology. Over the years of work of the Rostov branch of the SMSAHE, an authoritative school of morphologists has been formed. The 100th Anniversary of the Rostov branch of SMSAHE is celebrating, having highly professional medical personnel, four full professors, seventeen docents, three candidates of medical sciences. Pupils of the Rostov Anatomical School subsequently headed the departments of anatomy in many cities of Russia and of other countries. At present, several generations of scientists work in the staff of the Rostov branch of SMSAHE, which ensures the continuity of generations.

Abstract:
Physiology has not yet given us positive data on the function of the sympathetic nervous system. Only recently, histologists have been able to prove that the nerve cells located in large sympathetic nodes do not differ in their morphological properties from cells of the central nervous system. This gives the right to assume that in the sympathetic nodes there are independent centers that are in the same dependence on the higher centers, as, for example, the centers of the spinal cord from the brain. We have very little data on the relationship of the sympathetic nervous system to the innervations of the bladder. On this basis, the author began to study this issue in the physiological laboratory of prof. Pavlova at the M. Academy.

Abstract:
Ki-67 is one of the most famous marker proteins used by histologists to identify proliferating cells. Indeed, over 30 000 articles referring to Ki-67 are listed on PubMed. Here, we review some of the current literature regarding the protein. Despite its clinical importance, our knowledge of the molecular biology and biochemistry of Ki-67 is far from complete, and its exact molecular function(s) remain enigmatic. Furthermore, reports describing Ki-67 function are often contradictory, and it has only recently become clear that this proliferation marker is itself dispensable for cell proliferation. We discuss the unusual organization of the protein and its mRNA and how they relate to various models for its function. In particular, we focus on ways in which the intrinsically disordered structure of Ki-67 might aid in the assembly of the still-mysterious mitotic chromosome periphery compartment by controlling liquid–liquid phase separation of nucleolar proteins and RNAs.

diFiore's Atlas of Histology with Functional Correlations. Victor P. Eroschenko. Lippincott Williams and Wilkins, Philadelphia, PA; 10th edition, 2005, 448 pages (Softbound and Software CD (interactive), $57.95), ISBN 0-7817-5021-0Histology (or microscopic anatomy) is an important discipline of the biological sciences that is concerned with the structure of tissues of organisms. Light microscopy and electron microscopy in conjunction with various histochemical and immunocytochemical staining techniques are typically used today by histologists to visualize, describe, and identify tissues. Histology is a fundamental discipline in the curriculum for medical, dental, and veterinary students as well as for allied health students and scholars interested in the field of biomedical research. All these students need to have a thorough knowledge of the structure and function of cells, tissues, and organs. Recently, I came across a histology book (diFiore's Atlas of Histology) that I believe is worth the investment. This book provides a selection of high-quality, full-color illustrations of various tissues of the human body and is supplemented with sections of structural/functional correlations. This 10th edition is unique in that it includes a CD that contains an interactive electronic version of the histology atlas.

Abstract:
Abstract Tadeusz Stefan Kurkiewicz (1885-1962) belongs to the well-known Polish histologists and embryologists. His scientific activity started in the Department of Biology and Embryology of the Jagiellonian University in Cracow, which was chaired by professor Emil Godlewski (1875-1944), famous Polish embryologist. Between years 1908-1911, under supervision of the pioneer of the Polish histology, professor Stanisław Maziarski (1873-1959) T. Kurkiewicz continued researches in the Department of Histology of the Jagiellonian University. In 1909 he published results of studies on the development of cardiac muscle in the chick and on the basis of this publication on July 21, 1911 Tadeusz Kurkiewicz received Ph.D. from the Jagiellonian University. Between 1922 and 1959 (with the exception of the period of German occupation) Tadeusz Kurkiewicz was the head of the Department of Histology and Embryology of the Faculty of Medicine of the Poznań University and Academy of Medicine in Poznań (at present: Poznań University of Medical Sciences). His Ph.D. thesis demonstrated that the epicardium originates from pericardial villi, it means from extracardiac source. This great scientific achievement has been confirmed by recent studies. In this article we present curriculum of Tadeusz Kurkiewicz and impact of his discovery on contemporary cardiology.

Abstract:
Bioabsorbable implants can be advantageous for certain surgical tissue bioengineering applications and implant-assisted tissue repair. They offer the obvious benefits of nonpermanence and eventual restoration of the native tissue’s biomechanical and immunological properties, while providing a structural scaffold for healing and a route for additional therapies (i.e., drug elution). They present unique developmental, imaging, and histopathological challenges in the conduct of preclinical animal studies and in interpretation of pathology data. The bioabsorption process is typically associated with a gradual decline (over months to years) in structural strength and integrity and may also be associated with cellular responses such as phagocytosis that may confound interpretation of efficacy and safety end points. Additionally, as these implants bioabsorb, they become increasingly difficult to isolate histologically and thus imaging modalities such as microCT become very valuable to determine the original location of the implants and to assess the remodeling response in tandem with histopathology. In this article, we will review different types of bioabsorbable implants and commonly used bioabsorbable materials; additionally, we will address some of the most common challenges and pitfalls confronting histologists and pathologists in collecting, handling, imaging, preparing tissues through histology, evaluating, and interpreting study data associated with bioabsorbable implants.

Abstract:
The historical article presents material that analyzes the contributor from the first female histologists V.M. Danchakova in the study of problems of evolutionary histology and questions of normal and pathological histogenesis. Vera Mikhailovna Danchakova is a student of Professor A.A. Maksimov, the first woman, who defended a histological dissertation at the Imperial Military Medical Academy (1907). In foreign literature, her work is referred to as pioneering in the study of cells, which are now called stem cells. V.M. Danchakova made a significant contribution to the study of the evolutionary aspects of histogenesis of tissues with various cambial properties, for the first time showed the extragonadal origin of primary germ cells using the example of birds, and obtained new additional experimental data confirming A.A. Maksimov's unitary theory of hematopoiesis. Thanks to her research, the possibility of malignancy of stem and progenitor cells was shown for the first time. V.M. Danchakova was prompted by the study of generative cells (primary germ cells, gonocytes), as well as the influence of male and female sex hormones on sex differentiation in embryo-genesis. The results of her experiments using the method of tissue and cell cultures formed the basis for the development of the doctrine of the immune response "graft versus host”.

Abstract:
This paper elucidates the origins of scientific work on stem cells. From the late nineteenth century onwards, the notion of stem cells became customary in scientific communities of Imperial Germany. Adopting the term Stammzelle from Ernst Haeckel, Theodor Boveri was influential in introducing the concept in embryological studies and early genetics around 1900, describing a capacity of stem cells for self-renewal as well as differentiation. At the same time, blood stem cells were conceptualized by histologists such as Ernst Neumann and Artur Pappenheim in studies of physiological haematopoiesis and various forms of leukaemia. Furthermore, building on Julius Cohnheim's theory that tumours arise from ‘embryonic remnants’ in the adult body, pathologists aimed at identifying the cells of origin, particularly in the embryo-like teratomas. Embryonic stem cells thus assumed an ambiguous status, partly representing common heritage and normal development, and partly being seen as potential causes of cancer if they had been left behind or displaced during ontogeny. In the 1950s and 1960s experimental research on teratocarcinomas by Leroy Stevens and Barry Pierce in the USA brought together the strands of embryological and pathological work. Alongside the work of Ernest McCulloch and James Till at the Ontario Cancer Institute from the early 1960s on stem cells in haematopoiesis, this led into the beginnings of modern stem cell research.

Abstract:
Summary. Department of Histology and Embryology appeared at our university through the work of anatomists. Volodymyr Betz has made an important contribution to the development, so he is fairly called “godfather”. Originally, department located in two classrooms of anatomical corps on Fundukleivska str. (now it is called Bogdana Khmelnitskogo str., 37), butthen department was placed in a one-story house nearby. During the evacuation (1941- 1943) department had to be moved into Chelyabinsk. Fortunately, the buildings in Kyiv have been preserved and department has returned in its previous location. When morphological building of the Kiev Medical Institute in Brest-Litovskiy highway 82 (now Peremogi Avenue, 34) was ended, department moved to a new building and is still located there. Everyone who headed the department made an enormous contribution to its development. Only through their efforts the department has become a model, one of the best. Famous histologists: Petro Peremezhko (1868-1891), Yakiv Yakymovych (1891-1904), Fedir Lomynskiy (1905-1924), Olexandr Chernyakhivskiy (1925- 1929), Semen Shahov (1930-1953), Mykola Zazybin (1954- 1975), Kostyantin Kabak (1976-1992) were heads of the department. Since 1992 until now, the department has been being managed by the Corresponding member of NAMN of Ukraine, Professor, MD Yuriy Bogdanovich Chaikovskiy. New scientific discoveries is being made at the department, neyrohistological school continues its life in the works of students and followers. The study of nervous system is continuing, but other systems is being studied too; new embryological research is being held.

Abstract:
<p>The history of histology indicates that there have been significant changes in the techniques used for histological staining through chemical, molecular biology assays and immunological techniques, collectively referred to as histochemistry. Early histologists used the readily available chemicals to prepare tissues for microscopic studies; these laboratory chemicals were potassium dichromate, alcohol and the mercuric chloride to harden cellular tissues. Staining techniques used were carmine, silver nitrate, Giemsa, Trichrome Stains, Gram Stain and Hematoxylin among others.</p> <p>The purpose of this research was to assess past and current literature reviews, as well as case studies, with the aim of informing ways in which histological stains have been improved in the modern age. Results from the literature review has indicated that there has been an improvement in histopathology and histotechnology in stains used. There has been a rising need for efficient, accurate and less complex staining procedures. Many stain procedures are still in use today, and many others have been replaced with new immunostaining, molecular, non-culture and other advanced staining techniques. Some staining methods have been abandoned because the chemicals required have been medically proven to be toxic. The case studies indicated that in modern histology a combination of different stain techniques are used to enhance the effectiveness of the staining process. Currently, improved histological stains, have been modified and combined with other stains to improve their effectiveness.</p>

Abstract:
Background: Great saphenous vein (GSV) graft failure is one of the major reasons for repeat bypass grafting. A comparison of the effects of simultaneous, short-duration, externally squeezing and internally distending forces on the same segment of ex-vivo human GSV has not yet been published, although similar studies have compared the experimental injury of different ex-vivo human veins. Methods: Approximately 8-cm-long segments of GSV were harvested from each of the 15 patients. For each specimen, one end of the vein piece was occluded at a distance of 1 cm with an external cross-clamp for 5 min and the other end was similarly occluded at a distance of 1 cm by an endoluminal balloon. The middle sections of the veins, which were not occluded by any means, were taken as the control group. Two histologists, who were blinded to the groups, graded the hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and Weigert-Van Gieson (WVG) stained sections semi-quantitatively and performed the histomorphometric measurements. Results: The result of the histopathological evaluation of the intima layer showed that the microscopic scoring of lesions in the balloon group was significantly higher than that in the clamp and control groups (5.16 ± 1.32, 3.83 ± 0.75, and 1.00 ± 1.09, respectively, P < .001). In the adventitia layer, this level of scoring increased more in the clamp group than in the balloon and control groups (5.16 ± 1.16, 3.00 ± 0.89, and 0.16 ± 0.40, respectively, P < .001). Conclusion: Both the endoluminal balloon and external clamp techniques have harmful effects on the vein wall. Studying different kind of forces on different veins cannot provide us with reliable comparisons.

Abstract:
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has considerable application potential in noninvasive diagnosis and disease monitoring. Skin diseases, such as basal cell carcinoma (BCC), are destructive; hence, quantitative segmentation of the skin is very important for early diagnosis and treatment. Deep neural networks have been widely used in the boundary recognition and segmentation of diseased areas in medical images. Research on OCT skin segmentation and laser-induced skin damage segmentation based on deep neural networks is still in its infancy. Here, a segmentation and quantitative analysis pipeline of laser skin injury and skin stratification based on a deep neural network model is proposed. Based on the stratification of mouse skins, a laser injury model of mouse skins induced by lasers was constructed, and the multilayer structure and injury areas were accurately segmented by using a deep neural network method. First, the intact area of mouse skin and the damaged areas of different laser radiation doses are collected by the OCT system, and then the labels are manually labeled by experienced histologists. A variety of deep neural network models are used to realize the segmentation of skin layers and damaged areas on the skin dataset. In particular, the U-Net model based on a dual attention mechanism is used to realize the segmentation of the laser-damage structure, and the results are compared and analyzed. The segmentation results showed that the Dice coefficient of the mouse dermis layer and injury area reached more than 0.90, and the Dice coefficient of the fat layer and muscle layer reached more than 0.80. In the evaluation results, the average surface distance (ASSD) and Hausdorff distance (HD) indicated that the segmentation results are excellent, with a high overlap rate with the manually labeled area and a short edge distance. The results of this study have important application value for the quantitative analysis of laser-induced skin injury and the exploration of laser biological effects and have potential application value for the early noninvasive detection of diseases and the monitoring of postoperative recovery in the future.

Abstract:
96 Background: Rarer histological types of breast cancer represent less than 5% of all cases. The identification might be of value in assessing prognosis and predicting response to therapy in a Hispanic population. Methods: A total of 1,400 consecutive woman diagnosed with any type of breast cancer between 1991 and 2010 were identified. Histological types were classified according to World Health Organization criteria and the Armed Forces. Ductal, lobular and mixed ductal/lobular carcinomas and women with missing data were excluded, leaving a total of 60 patients. Tumor grade, vascular invasion, hormonal receptor status, ki-67 labeling index, HER2 overexpression, tumor size and nodal status were recorded and analyzed by histologic type. Survival curves were calculated by histology. Results: A total of 60 patients were classified according histology in order of frequency as mucinous (36.7%), medullary (10%), papillary (8.3%), metaplastic (8.3%), tubulo-lobular (6.7%), tubular (5.0%), metaplastic with epidermoid differentiation (3.3%), signet cell adenocarcinoma (3.3%), apocrine (3.3%), neuroendocrine (3.3%), acinary (1.7%), histiocytoid (1.7%), leiomyosarcome (1.7%), phyllodes (1.7%), high grade sarcoma (1.7%), and mucinous papillary (1.7%). Women with leiomysarcome type had the youngest mean age at diagnosis (27y) followed by mucinous (32y), and high grade sarcoma was the oldest mean age (76yrs). Most of histologists (82%) presented as stage I and II at diagnosis. Only mucinous, medullary and metaplastic presented with advanced disease (4%). With respect to ER/PR status, 36% of mucinous cases and 60% of papillary cases were ER+/PR+, while 50% of medullary cases and 60% of metaplastic cases were ER−/PR−. Only 13% had overexpression of HER2. Compared with OS reported for ductal and lobular carcinoma, median survival was significantly longer 54 months (40.4–67.5) and DFS median 66.1 months (48-82 months). Conclusions: Rare breast carcinomas are a heterogeneous group with more favorable prognosis compared to ductal carcinoma. Though many of these histologic subtypes are quite rare, an accurate and reliable histopathology assessment is crucial in order to determinate treatment, principally to the need for systemic treatment.

Abstract:
Prominent Russian and Soviet anatomist Vladimir Nikolaevich Tonkov (18721954) made a significant contribution to anatomical science and education. He is the founder of the theory of collateral circulation. For the first time, he established the patterns of blood supply to the intervertebral nodes, nerves, and lymph nodes, identified the source of the development of the spleen, and are a pioneer in the use of X-rays to study the structure of the human body. He prepared an original textbook on normal human anatomy, which went through six editions, and organized anatomical museums at Kazan University and the Military Medical Academy. The name V.N. Tonkov is associated with major social events. He was the first president of the Military Medical Academy in Soviet times. After the revolution, he headed the work of the commission to improve the life of scientists, was elected deputy of various government bodies, and was awarded many orders and medals. During the Great Patriotic War, together with the Military Medical Academy, he evacuated to Samarkand, where, in addition to teaching, he headed the faculty of training doctors during his stay in evacuation. He was one of the organizers of the All-Union Scientific Society of Anatomists, Histologists, and Embryologists, was repeatedly elected its chairman, and created the first in the Soviet Union and numerous anatomical schools. For his significant contribution to science in 1944, V.N. Tonkov was awarded the high title of a full member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences. The life and work of V.N. Tonkov became the property of the history of science, and his works, which have passed the strictest test of time, continue in the school he created through the efforts of many generations of his students and their followers. V.N. Tonkov lived for 82 years ― this is a beautiful, worthy life of a great scientist, an example of high service to the people and science, and an example of a bright purposeful personality. He died in 1954 and is buried at the academic site of the theological cemetery. Abstract:
The identification of millions of newly infected with tuberculosis while maintaining a sufficiently high mortality rate, despite the existing treatment protocols, confirms the urgency of the problem of diagnosing this disease and dictates the need for an interdisciplinary approach to this problem. In the overwhelming majority of cases, tuberculosis is associated with lung damage, but its “extrapulmonary” manifestations are also possible, in particular with localization in the head and neck region (about 10%), including in the ENT organs. According to the literature, the incidence of tuberculous lesions is maximum for the larynx (from 14,5 to 15–37%), minimum for ear diseases (from 0,04–0.09% to 2,4–4,18%). To focus the attention of otorhinolaryngologists on the problem of “extrapulmonary tuberculosis” of ENT localization in pediatric practice, this study analyzes the case histories of 496 patients of tuberculous pulmonary pediatric department No. 1 of the Moscow Research and Clinical Center for Tuberculosis Control. Tuberculous lesion of ENT localization against the background of a generalized process was found in 7 patients (1.4%) aged from 2,5 months to 1 year 9 months. Tuberculous otitis media was most often detected (4 patients (0.6%)), in single cases – tuberculosis of the larynx, tuberculosis of the pharynx, tuberculosis of the salivary gland, including in combination with other organic ENT pathology (for example, papillomatosis and tuberculosis of the larynx). Thus, the lesion of the head and neck (including the ENT organs) is one of the “underestimated” extrapulmonary localizations of tuberculosis, and the diagnosis and verification are delayed. Among the “extrapulmonary” ENT manifestations of tuberculosis in young children, according to our data, otitis media prevails. To verify the diagnosis of “Tuberculosis” of any localization, it is necessary to inoculate Mycobacterium tuberculosis and be sure to consult the material obtained with histologists. Doctors of various specialties should not forget about the possibility of setting Mantoux tests with 2 tuberculin units (TU) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) test for diagnostic purposes, despite the absence of a routine immunological examination in the national immunization schedule for children of the first year of life. Tuberculosis is curable, the main thing is to remember the need for early and timely diagnosis and adequate long-term treatment.

Abstract:
Reikšminiai žodžiai: kriptorchizmas, prielipas, Ad spermatogonijos, tubulių fertilumo indeksas, nevaisingumas. Darbo tikslas. Rezultatai. Pacientų amžiaus vidurkis – 1,42 ± 0,83 metų (nuo 0,58 iki 4,6 m.). Pagal nenusileidusios sėklidės ir jos prielipo santykį sudarytos 4 grupės: (I) normalus sėklidės – prielipo suaugimas 11 (19,3 proc.), (II) suaugimas tik prielipo galva – 22 (38,6 proc.), (III) suaugimas tik prielipo galvos dalimi – 17 (29,8 proc.) ir (IV) visiškas nesuaugimas – 7 (12,3 proc.). Pagal padėtį pacientai pasiskirstė 3 grupėse: (A) nenusileidusi sėklidė pilvo ertmėje 2 (3,5 proc.), (B) kirkšniniame kanale 16 (28,1 proc.) ir (C) ties išoriniu kirkšninio kanalo žiedu 39 (68,4 proc.).

Abstract:
SummaryThe sentinel lymph node (SLN) is of considerable prognostic relevance, because extended lymph node dissection may not be performed in patients presenting with histologically negative SLN. The aim of this study was to prove the prognostic value of the SLN-concept in these patients in long term follow-up. Patients, methods: The clinical follow-up of 202 women with histologically proven breast cancer and metastatically uninvolved (negative) SLN, as determined using Tc-99m-nanocolloid, was observed for a mean period of 43.4 months. Histological examination included standard methods (HE-Test) and special histochemical techniques (antibodies against cytokeratin). All patients underwent clinical examinations and mamography according a standardised schema; other procedures like ultrasound examination, routine blood tests, and chest X-ray scans were performed in patients considered doubtful after clinical examination or mamography. Results: Despite of negative SLNfindings in 14/202 patients (6.9%) metastases were found after a mean time period of 35.9 months. 4 patients showed local relapses, 3 patients presented with regional lymph node recurrences in the previously mapped (negative) SLN-basin, and 7 Patients developed distant metastases outside the primary lymphatic basin. Conclusion: In patients negative on SLN-biopsy the axillary lymphnode-recurrence-rate was low; in 3/202 patients (1.5%) a progression in the SLN-basin could be assessed, being real concept failures. Our results underline that there is no evidence to question this concept in patients presented with clinically metastatically uninvolved early stage of breast cancer.

Abstract:
467 Background: The genetics of urothelial carcinoma (UC), the most common histology of urinary tract (UT) tumors, is well characterized; much less is known about the genomic features of rare histologic variants of UT tumors. We aim to compare the genomic alterations (GA) of UT tumors with adenocarcinoma (AD), small cell (SC), squamous cell (SQ), or plasmacytoid (PC) histologies, to UC tumors. Methods: We identified patients with pure variant (AD, SC, SQ, PC) or UC histology with genetic characterization through the GENIE registry. Patient tumor genomic data were captured by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK)-IMPACT and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI)-Oncopanel NGS initiatives. Tumors with mixed histology were excluded. We limited our analysis to genes tested >1000 times (N=211). Mutation frequencies and copy number variants (CNVs), collectively called GAs, were determined for AD, SC, SQ, PC, and UC, and were compared using the Fisher’s Exact test and Kruskall Wallis test. Nominal p values were obtained, and FDR correction was employed (q < 0.1). Results: We identified 1199 patients with available genomic data who met the inclusion criteria. Histologic distribution was: 32 AD, 13 SC, 15 SQ, 11 PC, and 1128 UC tumors. The median age was 68 years and 77% of patients were male. Statistically significant differences in genetic alterations by subtype are shown in the table below. ARID1A and KDM6A GAs were higher in UC; PC and SC; CDH1 GAs higher in PC; RB1 and TP53 GAs higher in SC; SMAD4 GAs higher in AD; and NFE2L2 GAs higher in SQ. Conclusions: Variant UT histologies exhibit a distinct pattern of alterations compared to UC, consistent with their divergent clinical behavior. This suggests different biological origins for these variant histologies and possibly different therapeutic vulnerabilities. Exploring the GAs of these UT tumors in larger datasets is warranted.
