Li, Wai-ming, and 李偉明. "A survey of Hong Kong's historic bridges." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2012. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B48348909.

Full text
Abstract:
Historic Bridge is one of the major heritage structures in the world. USA has Golden Gate Bridge (1937) at San Francisco, England has Tower Bridge (1894) at London, Italy has The Rialto Bridge (1591) at Venice, France has Pont du Gard (20BC) at Remoulins and China has An-Chi Bridge (安濟橋) at Zaoxian (趙縣), Hebei (河北) (605 A.D. Sui Dynasty (隋朝)). How about Hong Kong? Hong Kong also has a lot of historic bridges and they are distributed in Hong Kong Island, Tsuen Wan and New Territories such as Min Mo Bridge (便母橋) (1710), The 21-Arch Section of the Bowen Aqueduct (1887) and Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir Masonry Bridge (1970). But what is the condition of them? Whether they are graded or declared as monument will have different level of conservation. They are facing what kinds of impact? All these questions are interesting to investigate and the answer may be useful for those who interested in heritage bridge study in Hong Kong or who want to know another type of heritage structures other than the historical buildings. In this survey, it will cover the 17 numbers of historic bridges with different status from Grade 3 to Declared Monument in Hong Kong. In order to carry out the detailed survey for each bridge, I have spent over 3 months to research the history of the bridges and 5 months site survey to collect the data and inspect the current condition of all bridges by taking site photos, tape measurement, drawing site sketch and carrying out visual appraisal. Finally, I carried out the data analysis and based on the finding to draw out the conclusion of this survey. I hope you can find out the answers from it and obtain understand the current condition and impact to the historic bridge in Hong Kong.

Komas, Tanya Wattenburg. "Historic building documentation in the united states, 1933-2000: the historic american buildings survey, a case study." Texas A&M University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/2295.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of the study was to gain new insight into archival building documentation in the United States since 1933 focusing on Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) as a case study. It sought to help explain how individuals with different levels of involvement with the HABS program, and throughout its entire history, understood the development, current operational context, and future direction of HABS. Seven general philosophical and practical issues were explored: 1) how HABS documentation standards were understood and applied, 2) the relative values of the process and products of documentation, 3) the understanding and application of the objective and subjective natures of the documentation process, 4) whether the mission of the program had changed with changes in the operation of the program since its inception, 5) the role of technology in the process of HABS documentation and how it shapes the end products, 6) defining broader historical epochs with the goal of adding to existing understandings of the history of the program, and 7) the causes and effects of HABS drawing style changes over time.

Abstract:
The following is a historic and cultural resources survey for the Indiana State Road 26 corridor between Lafayette and Fairmount, Indiana. The main goals of the survey are to examine the historic and cultural resources on State Road 26, and to provide information on its potential as a state byway. The historic and cultural resources survey is divided into four portions- a) a history of the State Road 26 corridor, b) descriptions of the corridor's historic and natural features, c) current issues facing the corridor, and d) ideas on how to market and interpret the corridor. The corridor has been separated into five distinct sections in the study. The study also includes visuals in the appendices to help illustrate the nature of the corridor.

Bohner, Rodney. "Reproducing the River: Historic Context and Resource Survey of Oregon’s State Fish Hatchery System." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/23908.

Full text
Abstract:
Oregon’s fish hatchery system developed in the late 1800’s in response to salmon fishery losses. Salmon hatcheries consist of a number of built components. ‘Growing fish’ requires a variety of building types which support the hatchery process as well as constant input of resources. In addition to surveying and inventorying fish hatchery resources, this study will analyze the social, economic, cultural, and environmental conditions under which these fish hatcheries were organized and commissioned. Ultimately, this survey will not only serve as a baseline for future, more intensive-level surveys, but will also provide a foundation for a National Register Multiple Property Submission. The use of hatcheries to sustain native Oregon fish species constitutes a major aspect of Oregon’s fishing and environmental conservation efforts. Oregon’s heritage hatcheries stand as physical reminders of early conservation activity and while their preservation provides a more complete picture of Oregon’s relationship with natural resources

Braat, Sylvie Anne Ingrid. "On sensory experience of historic architecture : an empirical review of sensory perceptions in historic buildings, aiming to inform their conservation process." Thesis, Robert Gordon University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10059/2725.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis studies people’s sensory perceptions of historic architecture, exploring the physical triggers for such experience, and connecting these with what can and should be maintained through building conservation. Sensory design is a developing field in architecture. The research argues that this approach can inform people’s understanding of the architectural experience of historic buildings, which in current discourse are predominantly considered for their associated ‘cultural significances’. People’s affinity to (historic) buildings is initiated by a response through the senses. This research advocates that establishing the triggers for such sensory response should be the main focus of the initial assessment of a building for conservation. From the review of changing approaches to building conservation, and exploration of sensory perception and sensory design, the research concludes people’s experiential perceptions have not been structurally considered in the appraisal of historic buildings. The methodology entailed the empirical development of a suitable assessment format, through performing initial on-site surveys that generated data to be added to those of a final sensory assessment, covering three buildings. Buildings were assessed according to Gibson’s sensory systems of visual, auditory, haptic, olfactory/gustatory and orientational perception, as well as with a comprehensive multisensory focus. Evidence from the data retrieved through this research indicates that the sensory assessment is a useful, informative and exciting addition to any architectural survey in building conservation practice. Such rich information will provide guidance and clarity to decision processes, to assist in retaining the affinity as the building’s physical relevance for the future. The research makes an original contribution to knowledge through the combination of two areas of study; through the application of sensory perception to understand historic buildings; and, in demonstrating that a sensory assessment has true potential as a suitable approach to the issue in practice.

Hill, Jobie. "Humanizing HABS: Rethinking the Historic American Buildings Survey's Role in Interpreting Antebellum Slave Houses." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/13303.

Full text
Abstract:
The Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and the Federal Writers' Project were two government survey programs from the 1930s that, in part, documented slavery in America. Historically stakeholders utilized these resources in isolation of one another. Coordination between the two programs in this study has identified five documented slave houses from the HABS collection that are directly linked to a slave narrative recorded by the Writers' Project. The slave narrative brings to life the spatial density, degree of accommodations, nature of the facilities, and attitudes of those who inhabited the slave house. The relationship between the historical record and the stories of the inhabitants is crucial to our understanding and interpretation of the lifeways and settings of enslaved African Americans in the Antebellum South. Historic preservationists now have five personal accounts of the historic plantation landscape upon which to build future interdisciplinary appreciation and research.

Reelitz, Andrea L. "A survey of pre-World War II architecture in Greenville, Illinois." Virtual Press, 1996. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1020162.

Full text
Abstract:
This creative project, "A Survey of Pre-World War II Architecture in Greenville, Illinois," involved completing a windshield survey and a more comprehensive study of designated areas in order to identify resources which are significant to the historic character of Greenville's commercial district and residential neighborhoods. Greenville, Illinois is a small, rural city in south central Illinois having a population of about 5,500. A general lack of awareness to the architectural and historical resources in Greenville's residential neighborhoods has been present for some time, which has resulted in demolitions and endangered buildings. This survey will help promote public awareness of Greenville's architectural resources, which is a first step toward preserving these resources. An article by Thomas J. Powell supports this view, "Today, the cultural-resources survey is recognized as the underpinning of any successful preservation effort, and not just in big arenas like Chicago and Washington, D.C." Now is the best time to create public awareness to the historic resources still existent in Greenville and the need to preserve these irreplaceable structures. The groundwork for a more extensive preservation movement in Greenville has been laid with its participation in the National Main Street Program. This creative project will provide many opportunities to educate the public by defining possible historic districts, identifying and explaining the dominant styles and types of architecture present and by making recommendations for future use of the survey. It will also serve as a useful tool to promote historic preservation, to raise public awareness to Greenville's historic architecture, and as a starting point for a continuing survey of Greenville's historic resources.

Abstract:
Läckö Castle is an historic building that has never been permanently heated but has been dehumidifiedsince the early 2000s to house museum collections. The purpose of the work was to evaluate thedehumidification performance and compare the climate with the state of preservation of wooden wallpaintings. Compiled climate recordings for different rooms in the castle from 1997 to 2009, before andduring dehumidification, were used and compared to the outside climate. The RH set point value of 70 % for dehumidification was not reached often, especially in winter with high outside RH. Wood painted witha linseed oil paint performed well, whereas paint containing resin was seriously damaged. It is concludedthat microclimatic differences in relation to dominating wind direction are important. The air exchangeof the building is very decisive for dehumidification efficiency.

Ching, Siu-tong, and 程肇堂. "Towards the conservation of Hong Kong's military heritage : the first survey of the surviving military features at Wong Nai Chung Gap, Hong Kong Island." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/206730.

Full text
Abstract:
During the Battle of Hong Kong fought in December 1941, Wong Nai Chung Gap was a major battlefield as it was a strategic location. Like almost all battlefields in this Battle, however, the defensive military installations within the subject area, most in ruins nowadays, have never been professionally surveyed with the purpose of mapping the military buildings of the battlefield apart from those reported in Lai et al (2011) to better fathom the flow of battle. Indeed, the only professionally surveyed military relics were those by Lai and Ho for Devil’s Peak and Lai, Davies, Ching, Tan and Wong (2011) for Shing Mun Redoubt. All existing historical researches suffer from a lack of accurate mapping information, if at all, essential for understanding the conduct of military hostilities. This thesis illustrates how an accurate exercise locating and mapping of three pillboxes (PB 1, PB2 and PB3), among other war relics in the vicinity, near Wong Nai Chung Gap in Hong Kong Island was performed; and addresses historical and conservation issues using direct on-site measurement by professional mapping techniques. GIS was used as the key tool for analysis and interpretation. The survey results were then used to identify the configurations and distribution of the war relics in Wong Nai Chung area and to verify the authenticity of war diary records provided by the defender on the battle. Precise arcs of fire of key permanent defence structures in relation to the surrounding topography were accurately determined. They help explain and reconstruct a prominent battle that took place some 70 years ago. It should provide a solid referent for war historians, relics’ enthusiasts as to how the state-of-art GIS technology can be used in probing key intriguing historical questions. Those addressed in this thesis, in relation particularly to three pillboxes, the observation post (OP) on the summit of Jardines’ Lookout and Stanley Gap, are: (1) Did PB 1 really kill that many enemies? (2) Why didn’t PB2 report to have fired at enemies along the Ride or Wong Nai Chung Gap? (3) Why didn’t PB 3 fire at all? (4) What were the daylight vision of the three PBs and the OP on the 18/19 December 1941? (5) What was the defence philosophy of the pillboxes? (6) Was the Japanese portrait on the battle correct in terms of details? (7) What was the role of the OP on the summit of Jardine’s Lookout? (8) Were Brigade Lawson’s Headquarters protected by any PB? (9) What were the locations of the military installations now destroyed or buried? (10) What were the locations of the military installations near Stanley Gap? To address the ten questions above, three working hypotheses are established for questions (1) to (3) while accurate on site measurements could be applied in finding the rest of the questions. For question (1), the hypothesis is: PB1 could not kill that many enemies because of faulty or unsatisfactory design. It would be refuted if the beaten zones of machine guns mounted inside the pillboxes could cover the major military strongholds of Wong Nai Chung Gap area. The hypothesis for question (2) is: PB2 did cover all routes of attack but only no information about fires was reported in the war diary. It would be refuted if PB2 had any blind-spot in shooting. The hypothesis for question (3) is: the beaten zones of PB3 could cover most of the important fighting areas, e.g. PB1; PB2; the Ride across the valley; the West Brigade HQ as well as the upper reach of Blue Pool Road (then existing) etc. It would be refuted if PB3 had certain blind-spots. The questions from (4) to (10) could be decoded through the onsite accurate measurements. This thesis is an empirical analysis of how the professional mapping techniques are used to plug some gaps in the history of the battle of Wong Nai Chung. The aim of the thesis is to find out some enigma by means of on-site and desk top study. This thesis reports on a number of key findings: the main conclusions drawn from this research showed that, first, PB1 could cover the major military strongholds and both PB2 and PB3 had a certain areas of shooting blind-spots. Nevertheless, the OP together with the three PBs, could cover most of the southern side of today’s Deep Water Bay Road; the eastern side of Repulse Bay Road as well as the almost the entire northern dam of Wong Nai Chung Reservoir except the southern side of the reservoir. The results of the thesis show that the firing arcs of PB3 could not cover the major fighting areas in 19th December 1941 but it could have, apart from delayed the capture of the Wong Nai Chung Gap by the Japanese, inflicted heavier casualties on the enemies because it covered the Police Knoll and the reservoir dam which formed part of the Stanley Gap Road. Secondly, by identifying the surviving war relics in Wong Nai Chung Gap, this thesis should contribute to better conservation research through on-site surveying of these features in a relative large scale which are not documented in any previous literature before. Upon finding out the accurate geographical locations of these surviving war relics, we could appreciate the rest of our research questions; i.e. the truthfulness of the inferred position on the Sir Cecil’s Ride below PB2 from the barbed wire stand which shown in the Japanese portrait; Brigade Lawson’s Headquarters was indeed protected by PB1 but not PB2; there are bunkers and water closets still remain intact in Stanley Gap. In addition, this thesis offers constructive thoughts on how mapping techniques could be contributed to the conservation of historic war heritages. Overall, the findings of this research proved that on-site measurements, together with contemporary GIS technology, can be used as a major tool of explaining the mysterious matters during the war. This thesis comprises of five chapters and the style follows the norms in Kate L. Turabian. Chapter 1 is the introduction. It serves as a general introduction to the thesis. It will commence by a historic review of the battle of Hong Kong in 1941. By describing the background of the battle of Wong Nai Chung Gap, it will points out some enigmatic problems found in war diaries. This chapter states the aims and hypotheses of this study and identify the scope of the research. Specifically, it raises ten specific research questions. Chapter 2 is a literature review. It shows that the “state of art” of battle history is one of written records, collection of photos and small scale sketches without the help of accurate mapping inputs. Where plans/maps were produced in history texts, they were in small scale and hence of limited use for forensic or conservation purposes. In other words, historians are handicapped by a lack of sensitivity to the importance of spatial analysis. This review shows the significance and potential contribution of land surveying in military heritage research and policy development. Chapter 3 describes the methodology of the land survey conducted. It commences by examining the theoretical basis as well as the principles of the technology used and will also present how mapping as well as the state-of-the-art Geographical Information Systems (GIS) techniques were actually used to perform terrain analysis based on the accurate surveyed positions of the war relics. Ten hypotheses in relation to the questions specified in Chapter 1 are formulated. Chapter 4 provides the survey findings and analysis for the ten hypotheses. Chapter 5 is the conclusion. This chapter summarises the thesis and discusses its methodological limitations and significance for heritage research and policy. It also makes suggestions for future research.

Abstract:
The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to examine upper secondary students’ attitudes towards historical feature films and documentaries as teaching materials in history education. A survey was cunducted with 133 students. The students were asked for advantages and disadvantages with films and documentaries, what knowledge they might gain from watching, and the films trustworthiness as a teaching aid. The result shows that the students generally are positive towards the usage of film in history education and consider films to be a good complement to other teaching methods, especially documentaries. They are considered more trustworthy than feature films, despite being regarded as a more tedious genre. On the other hand, both feature films and documentaries are said to increase an interest in history. The knowledge mentioned by the students are primarely factual knowledge. However, a few answers indicate that film also can help develop students historical literacy, visualise historical events, and time periods. Students’ trust for the feature films’ nar-rative and the documentaries’ objectivity are quite high. Paradoxically, the majority of the stu-dents claim to question whether the films’ content is historically correct or not.

Abstract:
Parcelling was a land divison institution that was used intensively in Sweden during the years 1827-1928. The parcelling consisted of one person selling a certain, decided piece of land to another. The deal was sealed with a simple contract. Whilst the seller was a member of the villages commonities and his land was assigned a quantity in the village, and he was bound to pay tax responding to that quantity, the sold parcel was not. In order not to reduce the land owners taxability, the buyer was therefore required to pay an annual fee to the seller. This fee was to be approved by the county administration, and the buyer also had to apply for Title Deed to have the transfer approved. These approvals were for a long time the only points of control toward parcelling. Involvement of a land surveyor was not a required part of the parcelling process until year 1918. Parcelling was terminated in 1928, but the parcels created before then are independent real estate units just like any other. This means that they sometimes are affected by land regulations and surveys just like any other real estate. When investigating the contents of these parcels the contract, past claims and other factors shall be used, to search out the initial purpose of the transfer. The contract that seller and buyer signed is the main source of evidence. Unfortunately, the contracts do not always answer the questions that may arise over time. Maps were not always made, and even when they were, they might have disappeared over time or simply be unspecific. What then remains are past claims and other circumstances to provide clues about what the purpose may once have been. The questions that arise when a parcel is to be investigated often concern its borders, wether water was included, fishing rights as well as other rights and commonities. The issue of water for these parcels has been particularly contentious. Legal practice has concluded that there are no presumptions, although such have been suggested and sometimes applied. There are however a number of scenarios where water and fishing in principle can be considered to have been part of the transfer.

McKenzie, Joanne T. "Deep anthropogenic topsoils in Scotland : a geoarchaeological and historical investigation into distribution, character and conservation under modern land cover." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/203.

Full text
Abstract:
Deep anthropogenic topsoils – those augmented through long-term additions of mineral bulk among fertilising agents – retain in both their physical and chemical make-up significant indicators for cultural activity. This project researched the geographical distribution and historical context of deep anthropogenic topsoils in Scotland and the Isles, and used this information to investigate the impact of current land cover upon the cultural information they retain. In so doing, the project investigated the potential for conservation of this significant cultural resource. A review of the historical information available on agricultural and manuring practices for Scotland identified several factors likely to affect deep topsoil distribution and frequency. These were: the availability of bulk manures to Scottish farmers, the significance of the seaweed resource in determining fertiliser strategies in coastal areas, and the influence of urban settlement and associated patterns of domestic and industrial waste disposal on the location of deep topsoils. Evidence for widespread deep topsoil development was limited. The primary data source used – the First Statistical Account of Scotland – was manipulated into a spatial database in ArcView GIS, to which geographical data from the Soil Survey of Scotland and national archaeological survey databases were added. This was used to devise a survey programme aiming both to investigate the potential factors affecting soil development listed above, and to locate deep topsoil sites for analysis. Three sites were identified with deep topsoils under different cover types (woodland, arable and pasture). The urban-influenced context of two of these highlighted the significance of urban settlement to the location of Scottish deep topsoils. Analysis of pH, organic matter, and total phosphorus content showed a correlation between raised organic matter and a corresponding increase in phosphorus content in soils under permanent vegetation. By contrast, soils under arable cultivation showed no such rise. This was attributed to the action of cropping in removing modern organic inputs prior to down-profile cycling. The potential for pasture and woodland cover to affect relict soil signatures was therefore observed. Thin section analysis aimed to both provide micromorphological characterisation of the three deep topsoil sites and investigate the effect of modern land cover on micromorphological indicators. Distinctive differences in micromorphological character were observed between the rural and urban deep topsoils, with the latter showing a strong focus on carbonised fuel residues and industrial wastes. All sites showed a highly individual micromorphological character, reflective of localised fertilising systems. There was no correlation between land cover type and survival of material indictors for anthropogenic activity, with soil cultural indicators surviving well, particularly those characteristic of urban-influenced topsoils. Suggestions for preservation strategies for this potentially rare and highly localised cultural resource included the incorporation of deep anthropogenic topsoil conservation into current government policy relating to care of the rural historic environment, and the improvement of data on the resource through ongoing survey and excavation.

Abstract:
The development of the Internet and the emergence of audio compression technologies have contributed to the realization of making millions of music titles accessible to millions of users. Due to the extensive distribution of music, consumers are being presented with a problem of information overload, while the music industry is being faced with the challenge of personalized promotion and distribution. Music recommendation systems aim to ease the task of finding the music items that might interest the users by generating meaningful recommendations. The recommendation for music is different from those for books and movies, due to its low cost per item, short consumption time, high per-item reuse, highly contextual usage, and numerous item types. Understanding the patterns of music listening and consumption is important to create accurate and satisfying music recommendations. This thesis reviews state-of-the-art music recommendation and discovery methods with the goal of presenting the historical developments in this area. Traditional music recommendation systems can be classied as one of two major kinds: collaborative filtering and content-based filtering. Recently, the research community has broadened its attention to include other aspects, such as hybrid approaches, context awareness, social tagging, music networks, visualization, playlist generation, and group recommendation. For the evaluation of music recommendation systems, researchers or developers need to take into account properties such as accuracy, coverage, confidence, novelty, diversity, and privacy. These properties can be measured in an offline simulation, a user study, or an online evaluation. Suggestions for future work in both the design and the evaluation of music recommendation systems are given.

Abstract:
Acts of violence involving civilian aircraft and airline facilities, as well as air travellers have been exploited by terrorist and others since 1931. This form of international terrorism is more than an attack on the rights of the innocent and rule of law. It constitutes a great threat to global peace. Although such attacks represent a small percentage of total terrorist incidents, it is clear that acts of violence directed at civil aviation are not limited by geographical or political boundaries. As escalating threats to civil aviation have caused great concern to the international community without regional exception, governments have introduced security measures against such attacks. The deterrent or diversionary effect of tight security programmes have been reflected in a perceptible shift of terrorist attention to easy targets and other forms of attack. However, governments and the civil aviation industry have failed to keep ahead of changing threats. They upgraded their security capabilities to tackle only the known methods of terrorist attacks. This short-sighted approach is the most serious concern for the safety of civil aviation. It cannot be emphasised too strongly that both the nature and the level of the security threat change frequently and must be monitored constantly in order to foresee possible danger and to consider how to cope with such threats. The international community must not allow the perpetrators of aviation terrorism to get so far ahead of the world's aviation security system. To achieve this aim, aviation authorities must develop long term plans to tackle terrorist activities against civil aviation. This will be a monumental task. However, where there is a will, there is a way.

Blanckenberg, Elizabeth. "The music activities of the Cape Performing Arts Board (CAPAB): a historical survey." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/2445.

Abstract:
Thesis (MMus (Music))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
The Cape Performing Arts Board (CAPAB) was one of four regional government-funded councils established in 1963, with the mandate to promote and develop the Western performing art forms (opera, ballet, music and drama) in the four provinces of the Republic of South Africa. Although the Board, and more specifically, the Music Department, made a significant contribution to the development of the performing arts in the Cape Province over more than three decades, its history remains largely undocumented. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to provide an account of CAPAB’s music activities against an outline of the organisation’s general history. Included is a discussion of the Music Department’s most significant contributions: the Department’s role as an impresario; the extensive music education programmes presented in schools and rural areas; the promotion of home-grown talent and the major part played by CAPAB’s orchestra (1971-97) in facilitating the development of the Western performing arts in the Western, Eastern and Northern Cape. Inextricably linked to these topics are a range of both positive and negative factors which influenced the development of the performing arts in this context. These include the effects of the Apartheid government’s policies on the development of the arts; the Board’s reliance on, and claim to state funding; the controversial history of CAPAB’s state-of-the-art Nico Malan Theatre Complex; the Board’s attempts to rectify imbalances of the period prior to the political transformation in the early 1990s and the events leading to a new dispensation for the performing arts in a democratic South Africa. Since CAPAB’s demise in 1998, sufficient time has elapsed to allow for a more objective evaluation of its role. Therefore, this study concludes with a brief assessment of the legacy of the CAPAB’s 35-year existence, summarising its effect on classical music in South Africa as we experience it today.

Abstract:
An urban archaeological site is a diverse and complex reality, whose knowledge, protection and valorization must necessarily be conducted within the unitary and integral design that offers the Heritage Management. Within this general framework, the figure of the Ecoarchaeological Park has become a model where it’s possible to interact effectively management and research goals, in order to achieve a social objective. In this thesis, we defend an integral methodological proposition for the investigation of an archaeological site, based on the systematic, sequential and summation implementation of a set of studies based on the archaeological prospecting. The series of works which have been developed and implemented in the Xoclán Ecoarchaeological Park, in the city of Mérida, Yucatán, which hosts archaeological vestiges of a pre-Columbian maya site, had taken as an example. The application of these studies has allowed to realize, at first, a diagnostic approximation to the site; and, later, to obtain a precise knowledge of the same one with the least possible impact on the cultural and natural heritage of the Park. In this way, a quantitative and qualitative information on the archaeological site and the space where it is has been provided, which has been able to be used by the Park Administrations for the immediate management actions and for the design of future activities.

Jane, Philip. "An Historical Survey of the Establishment of an Orchestral Tradition in Christchurch to 1939." Thesis, University of Canterbury. School of Music, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/3407.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is the first study devoted solely to the history of an orchestral tradition in Christchurch. Within a timeframe stretching from the beginning of the local settlement to the establishment of the first “national” orchestra in 1939, it provides detailed portrayals of all facets of amateur and professional orchestral activity. This includes the histories of all orchestral bodies, their membership, a chronology of concerts, repertoire, programme structure and critical reception. This dissertation explains the advance of orchestral tradition that is at times tentative and at times bold, until it is securely entrenched as a mainstream musical activity in Christchurch. A preliminary narration, which begins in 1857, ends in 1906 with the International Exhibition. This is then discussed as a landmark event for orchestral music in Christchurch. A series of case studies for the period of 1908 to 1939, covers each of the five major orchestral groups that flourished in this period. The case studies also include the footprints of development, the “incidental” music performed by the cinema orchestras, and the “studio only” performances of many broadcasting groups. The role played by minor orchestral groups as an “alternative” music culture is included, along with the impact of orchestras associated with visiting opera companies. The final section is a detailed analysis of the repertoire and programme construction, and a discussion of the people who played an influential role in the development of an orchestral tradition. Numerous tables and illustrations are provided. A number of appendices are also attached: a chronology of orchestral concerts in Christchurch; some significant orchestra personnel lists; an extensive set of source readings discussing the formation of a permanent orchestra; a chronology of orchestral activity for a selection of Christchurch musicians; a timeline of visiting opera companies, and a selection of concert programmes.

Abstract:
This thesis argues that English higher education has, for several centuries, progressed in a loose confederation with the spread of the economic and culturally homogenising phenomenon we now recognise as globalisation. The study comprises an historical survey that maps the evolution of the universities and their international influence. This interaction becomes more identifiable toward the end of the eighteenth century, after the independence of the American colonies when the British consolidated their empire elsewhere. The thesis argues that the universities, in their role as educators of the elite for the world’s largest empire, shaped the politics and the progress that contributed to modern globalisation. English institutions of higher education crafted their own attitudes and philosophy into a formula that was adopted, adapted and integrated into a worldwide ‘knowledge society’. This investigation spans two centuries, the long nineteenth and the short twentieth. The long nineteenth century is considered to have begun in 1789 with the French revolution and the publication of the ‘Rights of Man’ and to have finished in 1914 with the start of the Great War, which wrecked the existent globalised network. The short twentieth century starts with the conflict of 1914 and finishes in 1989 with the collapse of the Soviet empire and communism in Eastern Europe. It is not my intention to construct a complete history of this period but, rather, to trace the steady progress of the technological and socio-economic conditions that have created an ever shrinking world. This ‘time-space convergence’ is central to globalisation theory and will be juxtaposed with the equally complex cultural, economic and often political route of English higher education from an exclusive elite system to massification.

Fox, Nicholas J. "Surgical healing, power and social structure : an ethnographic and historical study." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1989. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/34815/.

Full text
Abstract:
How the everyday activities of surgery mediate and reproduce surgical authority and privilege is studied by ethnographic study and interview material in and around the operating theatres of a large district general hospital, on surgical wards, and in a day surgery unit, using a case study approach. Routinised movements of staff, patients and instruments within the operating theatre suite (0T) order the activities by which patients pass through surgery. These movements are structured, and culturally designated, to ensure the safety of the patient during the dangerous transgression of boundaries in surgery. The history of surgical sterility indicates the symbolic significance of sterile garb, to mask the polluting bodies of the surgical staff and designate them purifiers of corrupting nature. Sterile techniques signify the superiority of cultural definitions over those based in 'nature'. While the surgeon is concerned with a patient's Illness, the anaesthetist is concerned with her/his Fitness. This interaction enables all operations other than those where both Fitness is reduced and Illness is not reduced, to be proclaimed 'successful'. Consequently, patients may be allocated a socially defined status of 'healed', despite no improvement in physiological status. Cross-cultural comparison suggests that surgical healing involves a social status passage from a negative status of victim to a positive one of survivor. Healing is socially reintegrative: it re-creates apparent congruence between the life-scales of the sick person and social structure, which is destroyed by illness. Case studies refine the hypothesis that this social recategorisation legitimates surgical authority and privilege. Both the operation's 'success' and patient discharge are found to be necessary for a full claim to have healed. The potential to generalise the model to all medical intervention, and the implications for surgery and the sociology of health and healing are discussed.

Abstract:
This thesis critically surveys the dynamics of social work modernization in the state of Indonesia. The study examines the polarization, characteristics and trends of social work throughout the history of Indonesia. The survey begins by reviewing the two contexts of the historical developments of social work in both the developed and developing countries of the Third World. This historical overview is pivotal to place the context of social work development in Indonesia. Tracing the origins and the nature of 'social work' in Indonesia under the pre- and colonial rule will further highlight the course of its development. The adoption of modern social work in the post-colonial is examined afterward. The historical examination of social work in Indonesia is particularly relevant in underscoring the roots of the present criticism leveled at Indonesian social policy and work.

Schooley, Therese Nowak. "Historical Use of Lead Arsenate and Survey of Soil Residues in Former Apple Orchards in Virginia." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/33674.

Full text
Abstract:
Inorganic pesticides including natural chemicals such as arsenic, copper, lead, and sulfur have been used extensively to control pests in agriculture. Lead arsenate (PbHAsO4) was first used in apple orchards in the late 1890's to combat the codling moth, Cydia pomonella (Linnaeus). The affordable and persistent pesticide was applied in ever increasing amounts for the next half century. The persistence in the environment in addition to the heavy applications during the early 1900's may have led to many of the current and former orchards in this country being contaminated. In this study, soil samples were taken from several apple orchards across the state, ranging from Southwest to Northern Virginia and were analyzed for arsenic and lead. Based on naturally occurring background levels and standards set by other states, two orchards sampled in this study were found to have very high levels of arsenic and lead in the soil, Snead Farm and Mint Spring Recreational Park. Average arsenic levels at Mint Spring Recreational Park and Snead Farm were found to be 65.2 ppm and 107.6 ppm, respectively. Average lead levels were found to be 354.5 ppm and 442.3 ppm, respectively. Based on these results, Virginia needs to look at setting standards for lead and arsenic in soil to determine if cleanup of former agricultural lands will be necessary.

Abstract:
Iron has been an essential element to human development and iron-oxide deposits are known to host minerals that are labelled as critical raw materials (CRMs), especially in the EU. Therefore, ensuring a sustainable supply of CRMs require access to both primary and secondary sources of their host deposits such as iron oxides. Blötberget is an old mining site in central Sweden rich in both primary and secondary iron-oxide resources (i.e. tailings) from centuries-long mining activities. Thus, this thesis focused on this site, to (1) improve the image of its iron-oxide mineralisation under the historical tailings area through the extraction and processing of 2D data from a wider and sparse 3D dataset, (2) characterise the tailings in terms of geometry delineation and geomechanical property estimation by generating P-wave velocity models of the tailings, and (3) improve the interpretation of existing results in the area through 3D visualisations and comparison. Results from this thesis work suggest possible depth and lateral extensions of the mineralisation for few hundreds of metres beyond what was known previously in the area. It is believed that about 10 Mt of primary iron-oxide resources could arguably be present under the tailing area while the tailings contain an estimated 1 Mt of secondary iron-oxide resources. Also, this thesis work findings indicate that the historical tailings are approximately 10 -12 m thick, 650 m long, and 300 m wide, and has a Vp/Vs ratio between approximately 3-4, indicating a poor geomechanical strength. Additionally, the depth to bedrock in this area was estimated to be 50 m at its deepest parts, with a morphology indicative of complex geological occurrence. Therefore, it is concluded, based on these results, that Blötberget has a good potential to ensure the supply of both iron ore and its constituent CRMs.
