Abstract:
The purpose of the article is to explore historical reconstruction as a resource for event tourism in Ukraine. Scholarly views on the concept of event tourism, as well as its intangible resource – historical reconstruction are revealed. The research methodology is to apply methods of observation and comparison, analysis and synthesis, systematization and generalization, specific search and logical methods, a reflection of one’s own practical experience. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that for the first time the historical reconstruction in Ukraine is studied in the context of the event tourism resource. Thematic classification of historical reconstruction clubs in Ukraine has been carried out. Conclusions. The current status of historical reconstruction in Ukraine allows us to ascertain the presence of sufficient intangible (cultural-historical, historicaldemographic), as well as material (infrastructural) resources for their effective use in the formation of national event tourism. The main intangible resources of historical and cultural-oriented event tourism in Ukraine are historical reconstruction clubs, as well as events created by members of these clubs. The activities of historical reconstruction clubs form a subculture, which can also be considered as a resource for this type of tourism. The results of the study are of practical importance, which consists in the possibility of using intangible historical and cultural resources in the practice of tourism activities, which will improve the quality of the tour product, diversify its content and form, raise its level of attractiveness, and, consequently, increase tourist flows within the boundaries of event tourism.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Human habitation in Cook Inlet first occurred around 5,000 BC. Cook Inlet is a large tidal estuary that varies from 78 miles wide at its southern mouth to less than 9 miles at its northern extremity. The first inhabitants were Eskimo, who were later displaced by the Athabaskan Dena'ina people. The Athabaskan Dena'ina people were called “Kenaitze” by the Russian fur traders who first made contact in 1741. At that time, an estimated 1,000 Dena'ina inhabited the Kenai River area alone. European contact with the Athabaskan Dena'ina first occurred about 1756. In 1778, Captain Cook sailed Cook Inlet looking for the Northwest Passage. A Russian trading post was established in Kenai in 1791. The relatively mild winters of Cook Inlet and abundance of wildlife both onshore and offshore made human habitation very viable. Consequently, its shoreline is literally filled with historical and cultural sites. Other villages or cities of note within Cook Inlet include Anchorage, Tyonek, Ninilchik, Homer, Seldovia and Port Graham, many of whom continue to maintain a subsistence lifestyle. Cook Inlet Spill Prevention & Response, Inc. (CISPRI) provides oil spill response for the entire Cook Inlet;, a pristine piece of south-central Alaska with over 1300 miles of shoreline. A significant potential problem identified with oil spill recovery efforts involves the identification and protection of sensitive historical and cultural sites. To lessen any potential impact to these areas, CISPRI, in conjunction with Alaska Clean Seas, SERVS, Alaska Chadux and SEAPRO, have produced an 8 minute video tape demonstrating how to identify potential sensitive areas. It then directs appropriate actions to take until experts can be consulted to further direct methods of lessening impact. The narrative was developed by a local expert in cultural resources, and representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard, Alaska State Historic Preservation Office, and native organizations who represented their individual concerns. The video tape has been well-received by CISPRT's member companies and agencies and has been recognized as a good “get acquainted” tool for anyone involved in protecting cultural and historic resources during spill response.

Abstract:
Water has always been a critical resource for humans and climate change could aggravate supply problems. In this context, groundwater could be an important reservoir of water, especially given the dispersion of places where it can be obtained and the widespread occurrence of surface marks (springs). Historically, places where groundwater is available have been marked by humans using built structures, with stone materials having a major role. These cultural objects tend to become a part of the collective memory and the historical record (when available) and frequently they stay on the original site along time (hence “marking a spot” for groundwater). However, the development of major water supply structures, especially in the 20th century, promoted the negligence of these ancient water sources. We present a general defense of the importance of recording and preserving cultural stone related to water sources, preferably in the original sites. Conservation of groundwater-related structures could help in the future exploration of this geological resource and converge with historical information on the fountains’ discharge, with geological studies of the terrains and geochemical features of the groundwaters involved, in order to characterize the hydrogeological systems and their potential future use (including the preservation of water quality and properties). These studies could promote a synergetic conservation of both heritage and water.

In China historical and cultural heritage resources include historically and culturally famous cities, towns, villages, blocks, immovable cultural relics and the scenic spots with cultural connotation. The spatial distribution laws of these resources are always directly connected to the regional physical geography, historical development and historical traffic geography and have high research values. Meanwhile, the exhibition and use of these resources are greatly influenced by traffic and tourism and other plans at the provincial level, and it is of great realistic significance to offer proposals on traffic and so on that are beneficial to the exhibition of heritage resources based on the research of province distribution laws.

This paper takes the spatial analysis of Geographic Information System (GIS) as the basic technological means and all historical and cultural resources in China’s Zhejiang Province as research objects, and finds out in the space the accumulation areas and accumulation belts of Zhejiang Province’s historic cities and cultural resources through overlay analysis and density analysis, etc. It then discusses the reasons of the formation of these accumulation areas and accumulation belts by combining with the analysis of physical geography and historical geography and so on, and in the end, linking the tourism planning and traffic planning at the provincial level, it provides suggestions on the exhibition and use of accumulation areas and accumulation belts of historic cities and cultural resources.

Karunanayake, Geetha Priyanthi. "Identity as discursive practice : historical, social-cultural and political interactions in understanding workers' identities in tea plantations in Sri Lanka." Thesis, University of Hull, 2011. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:6231.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines how the self-identities of workers in Sri Lankan up-country tea plantations are produced, reproduced and modified in their day-to-day interactions. According to the social constructionist assumptions underpinning the research, I suggest that individual self-identity is how individuals experience and shape their social reality as an outward-inward process which takes place as they interact in public and private spaces. Accordingly, the first research objective is to analyse the interplay of historical, sociocultural, and political macro discourses in the formation of worker self-identities. The second objective is to analyse how micro discourses and processes affect the multiple identities of workers in the Sri Lankan up-country tea plantations. The research methodology incorporates a combination of ethnography and discourse analysis into a single analysis to examine how plantation workers incorporate macro discourses and micro discourses/processes in constructing, reconstructing and changing their self-identity as an ongoing process. By adapting discourse analysis as the method of data analysis, this study threads gender, caste, ethnicity and class differences as multiple dimensions of understanding self-identity and collective identity to show how self-identities in this context are simultaneously traditional and new, ongoing and fragile. This research can be considered as a theoretical contribution to identity scholarship and discusses subjectivity associated with self-identity. Through data, by interweaving of macro discourses and micro interactions, convincing grounds are provided to understand self-identity construction as an ongoing process of compliance and contestation. It is suggested that historical, social-cultural and political realities that workers encounter as objective structures are socially constructed by workers through their daily practices and conversation. Within this context, how workers articulate the fundamentally ambiguous and contradictory nature of their self-identity as singular and collective is discussed. It is stable and emergent, and contested as it becomes intertwined with public and private experiences. The research also makes a contribution to our understanding of cultural identities, because it is the first study of self-identity carried out in a Sri-Lankan tea plantation context, which incorporates both public and private spaces, gender, ethnicity and caste into a single analysis.

Mutheiwana, Pertunia. "A cultural-historical analysis of Grade 9 History curriculum and its pedagogical resources for learners' conceptual development." Master's thesis, Faculty of Humanities, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/33893.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the extent to which the South African Grade 9 History Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) document and its supplementary teaching resources (learners' textbooks and teachers' guides) outline knowledge focused on concept development in learners. The development of concepts requires learners' mediation in the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) where consideration and subsequent linkage of three knowledge forms namely: scientific concepts, everyday concepts and procedural knowledge is necessary. In light of this, a topic titled ‘National Party and apartheid' is analysed across the CAPS document and its teaching resources to examine the extent to which they outline these knowledge forms for concept development. Vygotsky's cultural-historical theory and the work of Neo-Vygotskians are used as the theoretical framework for the analysis of data in this study. The findings show that the CAPS document offer guidance to teaching resources on the necessary knowledge forms required to afford learners with full development of historical concepts outlined under the ‘National Party and apartheid' topic of the CAPS document. This is because a curriculum document is only designed to offer guidance and not to elaborate on content. As a result, teaching resources should elaborate on the contents of the curriculum and add sufficient knowledge forms. According to Vygotsky and Neo-Vygotskians, full concept development can only be possible if scientific concepts are made visible, sufficiently, and explicitly defined, linked to everyday concepts and procedural knowledge. This study shows that teaching resources failed to implement this fully. This study concludes that for teaching resources to afford learners with conceptual development, all three knowledge forms should be sufficiently and explicitly outlined and the necessary linkage between them made. This will, in turn, provide the teachers with sufficient and explicit pedagogy in the ZPD thereby affording learners with conceptual development. The development of concepts is necessary for South Africa because it helps to reduce social inequalities created in the past as well as granting learners the opportunity to live and work in a globalised environment. It is recommended that teaching resources prioritise the aims of the CAPS document by outlining knowledge forms for concept development.

Abstract:
The thesis is an investigation of global exploitation of nature, use of productive landscapes and itsremaining structures as the cultural historical environment. The further aim has been to seek analternative approach against a large-scale utilization of the environment through an elaborativeprocess of an architectural intervention, combining public space and local production. The thesisbackground is exploring the human activities and outcomes in exploited landscapes and is departingfrom the issue of an anthropocentric approach toward the environment. Further on, it analyzesdifferent mindset on natural resources in relation to the building of civilization and society, the ruralcontra the urban. Against the background of a linear withdrawal of resources and in the long-termlandscape productive decline, the aim is to prototype a productive infrastructure that works in acyclical manner, re-using energy and being less dependent on resources at a large-scale. Departingfrom the regional environment in Umeå and its traditional agricultural and former industrial use ofthe landscape, the intervention is tested by considering the principles of sustained life by theimmediate landscape. The aim has been to analyze and translate principles at the scale of landscape, farm and unit into a reproducible, productive infrastructure that harvest energy from recreation, cultivation, production and the condition of the topography.

Abstract:
Throughout history, the direct or indirect choice of preservation has resulted in the successful incorporation of tangible products of the human past into modern cultural environments. Within the current American historic preservation system, "significance" is used as a delimiter for identifying historic properties that are determined beneficial to the heritage of the American people. As defined under U.S. law, however, "significance" is attributed only to places and objects whose importance is limited within an historical or scientific framework. This thesis proposes that the significance of historic properties transcends the boundaries of these limited frameworks of importance, and demonstrates that the public benefits of preservation are maximized when history is reified through the modern-use of these places and objects as cultural resources for the current and future generations of the American people.

Abstract:
Within the past 100 years, the protection of archaeological and other cultural resources have fallen in part under federal jurisdiction. The role of federal legislation and regulations, with particular emphasis on the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979 (ARPA), is evaluated in terms of guidelines, application, and effectiveness. A history of federal legislation is presented, followed by an in-depth review and analysis of ARPA. The relevance and applicability of ARPA and other legislation is reviewed in terms of resource significance, definitions of archaeological material, logistics of law enforcement, and prosecution of violators. A case review is presented and analyzed. The roles of public archaeology and future legislation are discussed as they apply to continued efforts toward preservation of cultural resources.

Full text
Abstract:
GIS has been utilized in cultural resources management for decades, yet its application has been largely isolated to predicting the occurrence of archaeological sites. Federal and State agencies are required to protect archaeological sites that are discovered on their lands, but their resources and personnel are very limited. A new methodology is evaluated that uses modern light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and historic aerial photogrammetry to create digital terrain models (DTMs) capable of identifying sites that are most at risk of damage from changes in terrain. Results revealed that photogrammetric modeling of historic aerial imagery, with limitations, can be a useful decision making tool for cultural resources managers to prioritize conservation and monitoring efforts. An attempt to identify key environmental factors that would be indicative of future topographic changes did not reveal conclusive results. However, the methodology proposed has the potential to add an affordable temporal dimension to future digital terrain modeling and land management. Furthermore, the methods have global applicability because they can be utilized in any region with an arid environment.

AbstractIt is well known that the group at RPL had the equipment and the talent to have achieved one of the ground-breaking discoveries of early radio astronomy—the detection of the HI line in 1951. Yet they did not. In this chapter we revisit the question of why not, adding additional insights into the chain of events, including some revision of earlier versions of these events. As the group’s leader, this missed opportunity must be, and was, attributable to Pawsey; and yet not for the reasons that some retrospective accounts have suggested (see ESM 20.1, A Review of Recollections, for additional details of the imperfect memories of Bowen and Bolton.).

Abstract:
AbstractThe narratives and images about ocean and its resources governance, their use and value have deep roots in human history. Traditionally, the contemporary images of fish and fisheries have been shaped under the cultural construction of power, wealth and exclusion, and also as one of poverty and marginalization. This perception was formed on early notions of natural (marine) resources access and use that were born within the colonial machinery that ruled the world from the Middle Ages until late XVII. This research explores the historical overview of marine resources usage and governance in Latin America, from a ‘critical approach to development’ perspective, by following a narrative description based on a ‘three-acts’ format. It illustrates how and to what extent politics, power and knowledge have deeply influenced policies and practices at exploring the marine and terrestrial resources and at managing fish and seafood, historically, and how the fisheries resources’ management practices are influenced by principles of appropriation, regulation and usage, put in place already in the XV century that were imposed at the conquering and colonization of the Americas, disregarded previous governance practices. This article argues that fisheries governance cannot be improved without some appreciation for the social, historical, geopolitical, and cultural significance of the fishing resources themselves, of the perceptions of them by humans, and of the interactions Global North-Global South. The analysis also opens the dialogue about what kind of ocean and governance “science” we want, to support decisions, policies and practices regarding fisheries governance. Final thoughts highlight a reflection about whose knowledge is created and used to support decision and policy making in Ecuador.

Abstract:
Abstract In the last few years a bigger consciousness for the preservation of the cultural heritage has been developed. However, if problems associated with corrosion are not considered, during the necessary interventions on related works, by avoiding the use of materials and resources that make this phenomenon possible, problems associated with the durability of those materials, structure and safety for the citizens will appear. The aim of the present work is to identify, through various examples detected in several historical structures, certain corrosion problems that some of its components present, to establish the origin of the damages and to suggest guidelines for their refurbishment. The last point is the most important one, in order that the specialists in restoration leave rigid and unfounded intervention patterns that cause, in most of the cases, serious damages and put the own restoration in danger, as a consequence of a lack of knowledge about the mechanisms that proceed and which will act in a future if qualified personal on both basic and applied principles of corrosion not be requested.

In 2014 Plovdiv was elected for European capital of culture in 2019. This big international recognition of the contemporary city would be impossible without the contributions from the time of the Communist regime 1944-1989 when were created the bigger part of the modern urban infrastructure, the cultural institutions and many traditions in the cultural and intellectual life of the society. The present paper is focused mainly upon the preserve of the cultural and the historical heritage in conjunction with the tourist development. Abstract:
Lu Xun is a cultural giant standing in the cultural field of “post ancient” China’s “great modern”, and is “the soul of modern Chinese nation”. In the period of “post ancient” historical transformation, he created and formed the “great modern” cultural view through the cultural running in of ancient, modern, Chinese and foreign cultures. His understanding of culture has the following features: one should see changes from antiquity to modernity, the greatness of chinese and foreign, and the feelings of people, besides, it should become stronger, thanks to changes, openness to the world and great love. All this clearly shows that the direction of “the new Chinese culture nation”, which Lu Xun represented. People who devote themselves to Lu Xun’s research have found a very rich cultural thought and spirit from the cultural crystallization he created. They can’t help but praise it as “Encyclopedia” and regard the corresponding research as “Lu Xue (Learning of Lu Xun)”. The prosperity of “Lu Xue” is closely related to the Chinese people’s pursuit of “great modern culture”. Lu Xun, an individual of ideology and culture, accepted and created the ancient and modern cultural and ideological resources he came into contact with, and formed his own cultural thoughts through creative running in and integration. A single cultural resource can’t make Lu Xun. Understanding Lu Xun with linear thinking or opposite thinking will inevitably lead to discrepancy. It is the meeting and running in of various cultures that made Lu Xun complete, and thus made it possible for “Chinese Lu Xun” to go to the world.

Abstract:
Cultural and historical context of eudaimonia (flourishing) has not been sufficiently explored. Over-generalization of virtues leads to presenting a thin and impoverished version of them. My own goal has been to resituate eudaimonia by thinking about the virtues less as internal personal qualities and more as capacities that are themselves historically situated and require a variety of cultural and material resources to be enacted. Key words: happiness, flourishing, eudaimonia, virtues, virtue ethics, moral dispossession.

Abstract:
The NPS contracted with North Wind Resource Consulting, LLC (North Wind) to prepare a National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) Determination of Eligibility (DOE) for Mission 66-era resources located within the Birthplace Unit of Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park. This documentation is part of a larger effort by the Southeastern Regional Office to record and provide NRHP DOEs for Mission 66-era properties and cultural landscapes located within the 88 Park Service units currently under its management. The on-site inspection of the Birthplace Unit of Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park resulted in the identification of 20 Mission 66-era resources. These resources were first evaluated for individual eligibility for listing in the NRHP and were then evaluated as contributing or non-contributing resources to two potential historic districts following the guidance established in the NPS Mission 66 Era Resources Multiple Property Documentation Form (MPDF) in 2015. Of the 20 resources documented by North Wind as part of the current study, only the Visitor Center is recommended as individually eligible for listing in the NRHP. The Visitor Center is recommended as individually eligible for listing in the NRHP at the local level under Criterion A, under the themes of Community Planning and Development and Entertainment/Recreation for its association with the Mission 66 program as part of the development of the National Park System. The period of significance for the Visitor Center is defined as beginning with its completion in 1959 and ending in 1973 with the completion of the final improvements planned as part of the park’s Mission 66 Master Plan. Additionally, the Visitor Center retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association, as defined by the NRHP.
