This thesis is an historical commentary on Lykourgos' prosecution speech against Leokrates. The introduction comprises various sections. The first is a brief consideration of the specific historical background to the oration in Athens and the wider Greek world. The second looks at the orator Lykourgos himself, one of the most significant figures of Classical Athenian history who could be described as a fourth-century equivalent of Perikles. Lykourgos was 'Controller of Athenian finances' for more than a decade following the Athenians' defeat by Philip at Khaironeia in 338 B.C. During this peri

The Parallel Lives are primarily concerned with exploring various modes of eudaimonia, as Plutarch mines the lives of illustrious Greeks and Romans for moral exempla and offers them up to his audience for contemplation and imitation. In contrast to his usual practice, Plutarch offers the Demetrius and its Roman pair the Antony as explicitly negative examples. These men, who are “conspicuous for badness,” habitually engage in behavior this is to be rejected, not imitated. Demosthenes 8 is a crucial speech which has long been neglected and rarely given the attention it deserves. The speech focuses on Athenian relations with Philip in this crucial northern region and why Philip is a threat to Athenian interests in the area. Demosthenes seeks to paint Philip as the one who broke the terms of the Peace of Philokrates, even though the historical narrative is not supportive of this claim. The thesis seeks to provide the historical background to the speech and explain the historical significance and veracity of all aspects relevant to the Khersonnese, an area that it
