Abstract:
This article analyses the basic stages of onomastic studies development at the Institute of the Ukrainian Language of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine since the 1950s till the present within the Potebnia Institute of Linguistics. The paper focuses on Institute’s main directions and ideas, e.g., etymological research in hydronymics, anthroponimics, oikonimics, and ethno- nimics based on the traditions of comparative-historical approach. It also reveals important issues of contemporary studies as follows: 1) the etymology of proper nouns, i.e., personal, geographical and ethnic names, with respect to the systematic and historical approaches; 2) lexicographic studies on anthroponyms, hydronyms, and oikonyms; analysis of modern onimicon of Ukraine in accordance with current spelling norms of Standard Ukrainian; 3) systematization of the Ukrainian onomastic research and indexes. The achievements of the Ukrainian onomastics are reinterpreted through the lenses of numerous monographs, scientific collections, and historical and etymological dictionaries of hydronyms and oikonyms. A periodical Study of Onomastics and Etymology is viewed as a successful case of cooperation with the Ukrainian Language Insti-tute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and regional onomastic centers to share the outcome of national onomastic research outside Ukraine. The article outlines main goals that the Ukrainian academic onomastics must achieve, such as the following: 1) to develop Ukrainian onomastic science on the basis of objective data analysis, e.g., from the characteristics of a single fact to the concept formulation; 2) to expand the empirical basis of onomastic research; 3) to promote outcomes of onomastic studies among students of national Ukrainian universities. Keywords: onomastics, onomastic card index, onomastic studies, traditions of comparative-historical linguistics, onomastics group in the Department of History of the Ukrainian Language and the Institute of the Ukrainian language of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Abstract:
This article marks the 20th anniversary of the journal Voprosy Onomastiki, based on responses to a questionnaire sent to its staff, editorial board, experts, and regular contributors. The questionnaire asked respondents to share their views on the current development of onomastic science, the journal’s role in Russian and global onomastics, and how various categories of onyms and areas of onomastic research are addressed. Respondents also commented on the diversity of authorship and the strengths and weaknesses of the editorial policy. The article presents these views alongside the authors’ own perspectives on the significant achievements and future directions of Russian and global onomastics at the start of the 21st century. It also provides an assessment of the state of the Russian onomastic community. Alongside these subjective opinions, the article includes objective scientometric data and a statistical analysis of the journal’s content over its twenty-year history, covering the linguistic and geographical diversity of published material and the most common reasons for article rejections. The analysis shows that at least 23% of published articles rely on field data, with a primary focus on historical onomastics, etymology, and onomasiology. In the past decade, the scope of articles has broadened, reflecting the rise of socioonomastics and topics such as proper name derivation, morphology, orthography, their study in historical sources and folklore, ethnolinguistics, and naming practices. The journal’s linguistic diversity is increasing, with each volume covering data from 13–16 language groups. To date, it has published manuscripts from authors in 40 countries.

Abstract:
As a result of our research, English onomastics shows that there are close associative links between language and culture, historical reality, and as a result, metaphorical shades and stylistic connotations appear in the semantics of onomastic units. Like other metaphorical meanings, onomastic connotations have been filtered through the English worldview, folklore, legends, and national psychology, and have become means of stylistic expression. Stylistic onomastics covers the expressive, satirical, humorous features of artistic style. The ethnic character of the people speaking this language, as well as the objective features of toponyms have a certain role in the emergence of stylistic nuances.

Abstract:
This article investigates onomastics among China’s Hui Muslims, the largest Muslim minority. Through socio-linguistic fieldwork in Shāndōng province, it explores naming practices, revealing unique intersections of language, religion, and culture. The Hui, with dual Chinese and „Hui names,“ exhibit a distinctive onomastic landscape influenced by diverse historical and religious factors. The study highlights Arabic-derived surnames, the impact of Islamic traditions on naming ceremonies, and the complexity of Hui Muslim onomastics. Commonalities, such as individualized naming and a sino-Arabic form for all „Hui names,“ emerge alongside variations. The research underscores the need for broader studies encompassing diverse Hui Muslim communities to comprehensively understand anthroponomastics in Chinese onomastic studies.

Abstract:
This article discusses the theory naming system of the Kazakh and Bashkir languages. The main sections of Kazakh and Bashkir onomastics are described, the degree of study of its individual sections is analyzed, according to which the course of development of Kazakh and Bashkir onomastics is determined. Although the main sections of onomastics are currently studied in detail, its individual areas still require study and systematization. In this regard, the historical materials that were guided in the study of onomastic space make it possible to identify the linguistic connection of onomastic units, show their connection with the history and culture of the people, as well as to cite the continuity of some phenomena in the formation of historical Kazakh and Bashkir names with a certain period of public life. As a result, it is established that in the basic vocabulary of Kazakh and Bashkir names, along with common Turkic words, other elements are used, and the lack of consistency in modern Kazakh surname writing, and in modern Bashkir, models of writing a person's last name (patronymic) are formed in accordance with the word-forming patterns of the Russian language, are shown on the basis of specific language data.

Abstract:
This paper offers a number of semiological reflections on proper names. It contrasts the Saussurean approach to names with the related socio-onomastic (i.e. Labovian) approach and draws conclusions about their theoretical coherence and empirical viability. It further argues that an ‘informationist’ approach to names, which introduces a conception of the sign compatible with the cognitive sciences, does not advance our understanding of either semiology or onomastics, being fixated on a questionable analogy of the human mind/brain to the computer. Instead, the paper promotes an alternative approach to names based on an integrational semiology as developed by the linguist Roy Harris. The second part of the article revisits a study on colonial New England titles of civility and suggests that sociohistorical onomastics, like socio-onomastics, is founded on a dubious metaphysical assumption concerning the ontology of ‘language’.

Abstract:
The article reveals the stage of formation of Ukrainian onomastics. Mykhailo Maksymovych was one of the first Ukrainian scholars to study toponymics as historical sources. It is important that Maksymovych’s works are contemporary to the works of the founders of European onomastics P. Šafárik and K. Zeuss. Thus Maksymovych is one of the founders of historical onomastics as a science. In particular, the scholar used hydronyms to prove the connection of ancient Rus with Kyiv region, with Ukraine. Maksymovych also founded field onomastics, he himself wrote down the names of places he visited, in particular microtoponymy. In the Dnieper region, Maksymovych’s initiative was continued by O. Lazarevsky, L. Pokhylevych and M. Sumtsov. In western Ukraine, Denis Zubrytsky laid the foundations of historical onomastics. This case was continued by V. Ploschansky and A. Petrushevych.

Abstract:
Ethnonyms and historical-geographical names that reflect the names of these ethnoses are also part of the language's interesting vocabulary groups. Without etnonyms or toponyms, it is impossible to get detailed information about the formation of any people. That is why ethnotoponyms in the onomastic system of language are considered to be the oldest lexical units. It is clear from the studies that the history of the origin of many ethnotoponyms belonging to the Turkic language is older than the history of written monuments belonging to this language. Each nation has given its name to the geographical objects since its formation, or named them with words belonging to its own language. As a result, each toponym, is a product of a certain period and keeps the traces of history. Avshar, Az, Alpout, Bayat, Bayandir, Cagatay, Chepni, Chinchavat, Chul, Khalaj, Khurs, Kulus, Kechili, Kangar, Mugan, Garakhanli, Kipchak, Padar, Pechenek, Turkesh, Sag, Sungur, Suvar, Oguz, Uz and hundreds of other such ethnotoponyms bear traces of ancient time in the modern stage of Azerbaijan toponymy.. Among these ethnotoponyms, the Cimmerians // Gamarli tribe is one of the tribes that bear the traces of history in Azerbaijani-Turkic onomastics as both ethnotoponyms (Gamardash-mountain in Lachin region; Gamarvan-village in the administrative-territorial unit of Gabala region; Gamarvan - river in Gabala region, Gamarli-region in Armenia) and anthroponyms (Gamar - person's name; Gamarli-surname). Abstract:
Onomastics, especially historical onomastics, has always been ready to take over the attitudes and results of other branches of linguistics or related studies. In recent times, new trends, such as cognitive linguistics have been exerting a strong influence on onomastics, requiring the adoption of a more dominant psycholinguistic approach in research concerning the mental representation of proper names. Meeting this requirement, however, is hindered by the fact that we know relatively little about the mental representation of linguistic items in general. Furthermore, the examination of mental processes affecting proper names is presently situated at the periphery of psycholinguistic research. This paper, as a basis for further studies, seeks to present how and under what conditions the investigation of the mental relations of proper names appears satisfactory, and wishes to summarise the results of psycho- and neurolinguistics as well as those of cognitive linguistics achieved so far in this research field, also mentioning and commenting on some relevant onomastic observations.

Abstract:
The onomastic subcorpus is relevant for a number of sciences, especially for linguistics, geography, and cognitive science. The basic basis for the development of the subcorpus was the defended dissertations and scientific monographs and works on Kazakh onomastics. The article provides an overview of the history of the development of Kazakh onomastics and discusses the role and significance of the creation of the onomastic subcorpus. The types of onoms included in the subcorpus and the characteristic features attributed to them are discussed. The article points out that the onomastic subcorpus includes linguistic information and metainformation of proper names. The onomastic subcorpus can be used both for scientific and practical purposes. First, the content and functions of proper names found in texts of different genres are revealed. On the other hand, this subcorpus as a comprehensive dictionary provides the user with comprehensive information about the geolocation of the toponymic object, place of birth, name, flora and fauna, etc. The main purpose of the onomastic subcorpus is to systematize a variety of scientific, cultural information that is contained in the onomastic name. Proper names are a social phenomenon, closely connected with the life of society, due to which its semantics is often dominated by ideological load. Each onym refers to a certain period and preserves its historical character. Therefore, it contains non-linguistic information, namely geographical, ethno-cultural, and historical information. The task of the onomastic corpus is to collect, systematize, and make this information publicly available in electronic form. The proper names included in the corpus are characterized in terms of word formation, grammatical regularities, as well as in terms of semantic, etymological, orthographic, etc.

Abstract:
The reviewed two-volume dictionary by Alexander V. Kuznetsov refers to historical onomasticon featuring names (nicknames), patronymics, names of villages attested, in handwritten and published business monuments of the pre-national period and related to the territory of the Russian North. To date, the “Folk Name Book of the Russian North” is the most comprehensive lexicographic volume in terms of the data span, composition, and the source base, which is its main advantage and testifies to the author’s meticulous approach to material collection. The onomastic data introduced by the author have a high value for specialists in onomastics, dialectology, language history, ethnolinguistics, culture and society of late medieval Russia. The dictionary follows a traditional structure: it opens with an introduction that highlights certain issues of historical anthroponymy, provides a brief analysis of lexicographic publications that record names, defines the terminology used in the dictionary, describes the structure of the dictionary entry; then follows the dictionary itself, complete with the lists of sources and annexes. However, similarly to other lexicographic publications, the dictionary is fraught with some errors, inaccuracies in the presentation of onomastic materials, the structure of the dictionary entry, interpretation of the internal form and controversial theoretical statements, all of which are noted in the review.

The article is devoted to the linguistic historical and cognitive study of onomastic names common to the Turkological science found in the Korkyt work, the common heritage of the Kipchak-Oguz epoch. The author claims that recently, when considering the names of names in historical songs and legends relating to each Kazakh epoch, there are still unresolved problems.Of great scientific importance is the identification of patterns of language development, language layers, deep knowledge of the history of the native land through a comprehensive historical and linguistic study of the materials of the poem based on the opinions of domestic and foreign researchers. Therefore, within the framework of one article, it is impossible to conduct a comprehensive linguistic analysis of onomastic names in the Korkyt legend, which is a common heritage for the Oguz-Kipchak tribes. The study of onomastic names in historical tales and legends characteristic of the Oguz- Kipchak epoch as a whole, combined with the achievements of modern science, is one of the main problems of Turkology, including Kazakh onomastics. Abstract:
The article presents an overview of the work of the 22nd International Conference “Onomastics of the Volga region”, held on September 26–29, 2024, at Saratov State Medical University. The participants were diverse in geography and affiliation: the forum brought together scientists from 58 universities and scientific institutions in Russia (35 cities), as well as neighboring countries. Two plenary sessions were held, five breakout sessions, held in face-to-face and mixed format, and one intersectional session in a remote format. A total of 98 reports were presented. The main areas of work were: anthroponymy, toponymy, urbanonymy and literary onomastics. We also considered the names of peripheral categories (pragmatonyms, armonyms, zoonyms, agionyms, ergonyms) and their functioning in different types of discourse. The range of topics and the occupancy of sections showed that the study of urbanonymic landscapes (microtoponymy, godonymy, ergonymy) and literary onomastics is currently in high demand. Historical, etymological and motivational studies of toponyms and anthroponyms are still relevant. In a number of reports, other aspects of nuclear onyms were also touched upon: spelling, syntax, and translation. The appearance of reports in line with new directions and aspects of onomastics can be considered significant: computer and corpus, onomastic studies of media and computer discourse. Following the results of the conference, a collection of articles was published, the resolution noted the high level of organization and holding of the event and recommended initiating the transformation of the traditional collection into a periodical.

Abstract:
Taking present-day Vilnius County, which marks the cultural and linguistic periphery, as a case study, the attempt is made in this paper to expand the horizons of traditional onomastic research by introducing Cognitive Metaphor Theory (CMT) as an innovative approach to understanding the motivation of toponyms. Onomastic research has traditionally focused on toponyms’ etymology, derivation, and historical context. In contrast, this article explores how the application of CMT enhances our understanding of the cognitive processes inherent in toponymy. In this way, this study contributes to advancing the disciplinary field of cognitive onomastics by providing insights into how language and cognition intertwine in the conceptualization and naming of geographical features. Rooted in cognitive linguistics, CMT assumes that abstract concepts are often understood and structured through metaphors derived from tangible experiences. In the context of toponymy, this research investigates how place names are not merely linguistic labels for geographic locations but are inherently linked to cognitive structures and mental representations. CMT facilitates our understanding of toponyms’ linguistic and historical dimensions and uncovers the cognitive processes underlying their creation and interpretation. By bridging the traditional onomastic research with a cognitive approach, this novel perspective offers a deeper insight into the complex interplay of language, cognition, and geographical space. The analysis integrates traditional onomastic research methods with Cognitive Onomastics principles, utilizing frameworks from both Lithuanian and foreign scholars to classify selected Vilnius County toponyms through etymological, derivational, and semantic analyses, while also examining associated extralinguistic data. The analysis found that metaphorical toponyms in Vilnius County, though relatively uncommon, carry symbolic or cultural meaning. A total of 38 metaphorical names were identified among limnonyms, potamonyms, and oikonyms, highlighting their role in depicting the interplay between language, culture, and the environment.

Abstract:
Introduction. In Finno-Ugric studies, there is a noticeable lack of research on literary onomastics, and the semantic functions of proper names within the structure of literary texts are insufficiently explored. The purpose of this article is to identify the types of onyms in the works of M. Slugina and to determine their functional and semantic features. Materials and Methods. The study material consisted of works by M. Slugina from the poetry collection “Tyust” (“Shades”). The research employed traditional linguistic methods: descriptive, functional-semantic, comparative-historical, as well as modern approaches to the study of literary texts – interpretative and gender-based. Results and Discussion. The types of onyms in M. Slugina's poetic texts have been identified, the core and periphery of the onomastic space in her works have been outlined, and a semantic analysis of onomastic vocabulary has been conducted. It is noted that the core of the onomastic space in M. Slugina's poetry consists of anthroponyms and toponyms (including oikonyms, choronyms, and hydronyms), while the periphery includes mythonyms, zoononyms, urbanonyms, dryonyms, theonyms, cosmonyms, hemeronyms, chrononyms, geortonyms, and religious-cultural toponyms. In the author's works, these serve text-forming, stylistic (informational-stylistic, emotional-stylistic), evaluative, aesthetic, symbolic, and conceptual functions. Conclusion. The results of this study can be useful for further research into poetic onomastics within Finno-Ugric linguistics.

Abstract:
The article deals with the problem of extracting historical, cultural and socio-cultural information from the units of regional onomastics. The subject of the study is the specifics of the application of linguistic local history analysis to collect information related to the history and culture of the region from proper names. The paper characterizes for the first time the methodology of linguistic local history analysis of onomastic units. In the course of the study, the main parameters of the linguistic local history analysis of regional onyms were determined. It is noted that the linguistic analysis of local lore in the broadest sense of the word includes the following techniques: historical information about the settlement whose onomasticon is being studied; linguistic local history commenting on linguistic facts (bringing some information from the history and culture of the region to confirm or refute the etymology of the onym, its local attachment); linguistic local history description of the units of the onomastic system (characterization of onomastic units based on the involvement of information from the history, geography, ethnography, archeology of the region); proper linguistic local history analysis, consisting in a comprehensive study of the semantics of the onym, the motif of the nomination, the features of the functioning of the onym on the basis of proper linguistic and scientific local history data: historical (including archival), geographical, archaeological, biological and others. The paper notes that the linguistic local history analysis of the units of regional onomastics allows us to establish the information preserved in the proper name, which conveys information about the history and culture of the region.

Abstract:
On the Determination of the Source Value of Forged Charters for Historical Toponomastics Charters with an uncertain chronological status have multiple chronological layers from a linguistic perspective. Due to the circumstances of their creation and survival, the historical linguistic and historical onomastic source value of names included in them do not necessarily overlap; this means that it may be possible that the same name can be associated with different centuries as a source for studies in historical linguistics and historical onomastics. Therefore, one of the key steps in the linguistic exploration of charters with an uncertain chronological status (including forged charters) involves the examin¬¬ation of the source value of the charter separately for the purposes of historical linguistics and historical toponomastics: we assess the chronological features of the recording of the names (historical linguistic source value) only after the con¬sideration of the date of the inclusion of the names in the charter (i.e., historical onomastic source value). We may determine the historical toponomastic source value of forged charters mostly based on the principles of historical studies and diplomatics. This includes, for example, the consideration of litigations of abbeys or the study of the formulas of charters as well as the word use of the charter. With the growing number of charters of an uncertain status studied linguis¬tically, it has become clear that we need to further specify the assessment of the charters from the perspective of historical toponomastics completed based on these principles. In my paper, I study how we may establish the source value of particular toponyms from the perspective of historical onomastics using four forged charters of Saint Stephen (the charters of Bakonybél, Pécsvárad and two charters from Zalavár), while also relying on considerations rooted in history and diplomatics. In the first part, I show that irrespective of the fact that a name probably had not appeared in the original source of the forged charter, the places and names in question could already exist in the 11th century. In the second part, I provide examples that show that the sections of forged charters that have been designated as belonging to the 11th century mostly using the principles of diplo¬matics and history may also include such names the early use of which is question¬able.

Abstract:
The article considers the onomastic space in the work of Rabguzi “Qisas al-Anbiya”, the ethnolinguistic nature of the onomastic names found in the story. When using onomastic names and determining the function of onomastic names in order to convey information in a story, the author's thought and the rights of the author in the story were taken into account.
The system of names in the onomastic space of the Kazakh and Turkic peoples in their current form is a product of the centuries-old collective thought of the peoples and tribes that lived in each historical period, a common spiritual creation in the cultural sense. The onomastic names found in the relic of Rabguzi “Qisas al-Anbiya” determine the realities of everyday life, history, experience, economic culture and worldview, traditions and beliefs of the language community of that time. In this prose story, the language and history, cultural values, religious and personal views of the Turks are presented through the knowledge of the author.
The story contains the names of sheikhs who preached Islam to the Muslim community, the names of the heroes of the work, caliphs, prophets, saints and companions, angels, their nicknames and derivative names. In linguistics, the relevance of studying the language of the story in the works of Rabguzi, especially its onomastics, is growing.
The need to study the onomastics of the story “Adam and Eve” is determined by the preservation in the monument of archaisms lost in the language. As a result of studying the article, we drew attention to the wide scope of onyms in the story and to the fact that onomastic names are language symbols that are ready to express any concept related to a given environment. Therefore, it is very important for us to understand the essence of this work.

Abstract:
In synchronic and diachronic surveys of family names, digital atlases have recently become extremely important tools, as they can provide information on the spatial distribution, localization, and dialect differences of names and name variants. European onomastics has already produced some very impressive works in the field, and Hungarian onomastics should also join the trend. In Hungary, the current synchronic surveys on family names face several questions to which adequate answers can only be gained from investigations into historical changes. The first steps to build the database of the Hungarian historical personal names have already been taken. The present database contains the 166,000 names of the first national census in 1715. The name corpus provides an opportunity for several linguistic, onomastic and interdisciplinary enquiries, some of which are described in the paper: 1) Lexical cartograms are used to examine the regionality of the names in order to reveal extralinguistic factors (migration, economic and social relations, etc.), adopting an interdisciplinary approach. 2) Personal names as elements of the language display dialectal, phonetic, morphological and lexical features; thus, their analysis provides us with valuable insights into historical dialectology. 3) Identifying the name-etymons helps us to find out the distribution of the linguistic origin of the relevant name stock, which might serve as an indirect source of historical demographic research to reconstruct contemporary ethnic conditions. 4) In name systemic investigation, the mapping and analysis of the regionality of certain family-name types are carried out. Morphological enquiries are aimed at discovering the geographical characteristics of certain formants (derivative suffixes) and variants.

In this article, onomastic linguistic units are analyzed from a linguocultural point of view. The influence of social factors on the language can be seen in the historical change and development of the processes of cultural and everyday life of a particular people, ethnicity, lifestyle, cultural relations, etc. In this context, the integration of the science of linguistics based on anthropocentric principles has led to an incomparable expansion of the object research. In particular, the problem of the relationship between language and culture has become one of the leading directions. In particular, there is a natural need for such an interpretation within the framework of onomastics.

his article completes the intermediate stage in a series of publications by the authors on the topic of the origin of the ethnonyms “Alans” and “Albans” and the corresponding polytonyms “Alania” and “Albania’, the toponyms “Alan and Albanian gates”, "Al-burz”, "Elbrus". The accumulated new data are well-corresponding to the interpretation proposed by the authors in previous articles. In some cases, there are trivial explanations basing on the original semantics of the Caucasian root with the meaning 'king, prince, ruler'. Traces of the original meaning are found in the manuscripts of Armenian chroniclers when they try to interpret the source of the name of Caucasian Albania. Also the original meaning is truly seen in epithets characterizing famous aristocratic surnames. The folklore material of the Ossetian epic Nart Saga is also significant. There were found several toponyms in Kakheti which have a direct connection with the topic of this article. The Arab geographer al-Mas’udi gives an extended description of the meaning of the Ossetian derivative from the name 'king, prince'. The dominant peaks on the terrain, as well as significant passages called "gates" gain the epithet composits "King-Mountain" and "King's Gates". The article is of interest to linguists, historians and ethnographers and it allows to exclude unnecessary ethnic correlation of specific toponyms and epithets in many concrete cases.

"Our paper presents the historical formation process of the official Romanian anthroponymic system, established in the first documents of the 11th-14th centuries, written in the language of the administration (medieval Latin). We have noticed the Latinization of written anthroponymic forms, in fact a formal adaptation to the system of the medieval Latin language and onomastics, by the modification in a Latinizing manner of the indigenous onomastic forms in oral circulation. The baptismal names attributed to people identified by their explicit Romanian ethnicity, mentioned in administrative acts written in Latin, differ from popular variants. The transformations undergone by the Romanian anthroponyms had a regular character, in conformity with a graphic code generally used in the language of the administration and the church. The effort to Latinize the names of persons during their administrative or ecclesiastical transcription represents a first attempt to render uniform and even to standardize onomastic variants."

Abstract:
Since gaining independence, the historical names of many objects in the regions of Kazakhstan have been restored, and the correct Kazakh spellings of distorted names are being reinstated. In order for our onomastic system's names to serve not only our own needs but also to be accessible to the international community, it is essential to first implement standardization in our own language. Although studies on the etymological and linguo-cognitive aspects of onomastics are well developed, problems related to their spelling have not been specifically addressed. This article discusses issues related to the pronunciation and spelling of proper names, as well as orthographic peculiarities. It analyzes studies related to global onomastic orthography. Additionally, it examines the representation of proper names in spelling dictionaries over the years. The article also considers scholars' opinions on the structural and semantic differences between common nouns and proper nouns, discussing their distinctive features.

Abstract:
This is the first review of books in Greek history after a year, as the Coronavirus crisis last spring made it impossible to submit a review for the G&R volume of autumn 2020. I apologize to readers and editors for the resulting delay in reviewing two books published in 2018. The multi-volume Lexicon of Greek Personal Names has been a tremendous tool of research that one day could hopefully revolutionize the study of Greek history. The volume under review is the eighth in the series; edited by Jean-Sébastien Balzat, Richard Catling, Édouard Chiricat, and Thomas Corsten, it is devoted to inland Asia Minor, covering Pisidia, Lycaonia, Phrygia, Galatia, Paphlagonia, Cappadocia, Pontus, and Armenia. The onomastics of these areas are complex owing to the various historical processes in which they were enmeshed: centuries of migration, conquest, and cultural change meant that, in addition to the ‘native’ cultural traditions of inland Asia Minor, the Persian, Hellenistic, and Roman empires, as well as migratory movements like that of the Celts, left a deep onomastic impact. The issue is further complicated because the majority of the evidence comes from the Roman Imperial period, making diachronic comparison more difficult. This excellent volume offers a new documentary basis for studying social, cultural, and economic processes of change in these important areas of the ancient world: the full collection of the evidence makes it easier to classify names into different linguistic groups, an issue that has bedevilled the study of onomastics in Asia Minor for a very long time; it will also be possible to study regional divergences in the onomastics of different areas.

Byzantine emperor and writer Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus made a comprehensive list of Croatian idioms in his work De Administrando Imperio [On the Governance of the Empire]. In addition to listing the idioms, Constantine VII was the first to explain their etymology, claiming that „Croats are those who own a lot of land“. He was also the first to mention historical traditions of the arrival of Croats in today’s regions, saying they were led by five brothers: Kluka, Klobek, Kosinc, Muklo, Hrvat and two sisters: Tuga and Buga. Apart from explaining the meaning of the name Hrvat [Croat] in the Slavic language, Porphyrogenitus also explains the etymology of many other names assigned to peoples. Faust Vrančić is rarely mentioned as the first Croatian etymologist. In his 1595 Dictionary, he gave an analysis of Hungarian words belonging to Slavic languages. Vrančić’s follower and the first Croatian onomastician was Pavao Ritter Vitezović (1652‒1713), who relied on folk speech and historical sources. According to Putanec, Vitezović made the largest list of names with their many variations. Furthermore, we will mention Franc Miklošič and Tomo Maretić. Relying on the documents from Dalmatian cities dating back to 9th ‒ 15th century, Konstantin Jireček compiled registers of Roman, Greek, Old Christian, and other foreign names, Slavic names in Dalmatian cities from the 10th to the 15th century along with surnames and nicknames in Dalmatian cities from the year of 1000 to 1500, according to Putanec. Finally, of great importance are the works of the following Croatian onomasticians: Valentin Putanec, France Bezlaj, Antun Mayer, Otto Franck, Petar Skok, Božidar Finka, Blaž Jurišić, Mate Suić, Mate Šimundić, Petar Šimunović, Stjepko Težek, Živko Bjelanović, Stjepan Babić, Dunja Brozović Rončević, Anđela Frančić, Domagoj Vidović, and others.

Abstract:
We consider static and dynamic in onomastics. We establish that, despite the fact that the synchronic and diachronic approaches to language are quite independent techniques, it must be admitted that “static”, although it may seem paradoxical, is not a synchronic, but a diachronic fact, which can be discovered when considering the language in time perspective. We justify that ergonyms serve people of adjacent generations and, on the one hand, ergonyms are supposedly stable and static, but, on the other hand, they are subject to dynamic processes. This inconsistency is the basis for the existence of egronyms and the source from development. On the material of oikodomonyms with the onymic part “anthroponyms”, reflecting the territorial variants depending on the linguistic and linguo-cultural preferences of the Tambov inhabitants, and the word “home”, the static and dynamic nature of the ergonomic category is considered. We prove that the identification of what is static and what is dynamic is possible only after the establishment of certain historical stages (boundaries) in the language. This will allow a native speaker to perceive the language as an objectively existing means of communication, and a linguist – to establish the systemic nature of the language and evaluate it retrospectively and prospectively.

The Zalavár charters (1019, 1024) are the least viable sources of information for historical linguistics and historical onomastics regarding the 11th century among the charters of King Saint Stephen forged in the Middle Ages. This is mainly because the Zalavár charters were likely not based on documents from the reign of Saint Stephen. The charters can be classified into three chronological layers through the vernacular elements contained in them. However, the current study aims to prove that the 1019 Zalavár charter does contain information valuable to historical onomastics and linguistics research into the early 11th century, albeit to a lesser degree than than the two other forged chartes of the era (the Pécsvárad and Bakonybél charters). The hypothesis is verified by examining a few place names listed in the census of the forged charter from the end of the 11th century and the Latin context of all the names contained in the document.

This paper aims to present the Database of the Historical Surnames of Transdanubia in its current state. This database showcases new, innovative trends in onomastics that ensure the versatile, interdisciplinary usability of linguistic resources. The database is designed to facilitate the geographical and typological analysis of the family names of the Carpathian Basin in the second half of the eighteenth century, with a particular emphasis on functional-motivationalaspects. It also aims to explore the linguistic and onomastic consequences of the great migration waves of that century. The data originate from the name tables of the 1767-1774 tax unification of Maria Theresa and complement the material of the Atlas of Historical Surnames of Hungary, which shows the situation before the migration processes with data from the beginning of the century. The second half of the paper presents an analysis of the Hungarian and German family name data from Győr County in the Database of the Historical Surnames of Transdanubia and of the entire Hungarian family name data and the German family name data from the Transylvanian Saxon territories in the Atlas of Historical Surnames of Hungary. This analysis reveals the similarities and differences between the name stocks, emphasising routinised name patterns and their socio-cultural and historical background.

Abstract:
The paper observes the current state of onomastics on the territorial residence of Komi-Yazvians, one of the disappearing small peoples of the Perm region. The authors intended to determine the degree of preservation of substrate proper names. The materials for this study were obtained during field expeditions of 2017–2018, undertaken to by teachers and students of the Perm State University to collect unique onomastic material in a small “pocket” of this people’s domicile — in the upper reaches of the Yazva (Verkh-Yazva rural settlement) in the Krasnovishersk district (Perm region). The first part of the article contains basic information on the ethnography and history of studying the language and culture of the Komi-Yazvian people. The factors that contributed to the formation of a unique culture, its preservation, and the formation of the ethnic identity of the Komi-Yazvian people are identified. The focus is on the current situation: the people are subject to strong assimilation processes, language and culture are rapidly fading and are on the verge of extinction. The authors emphasize that the Komi-Yazva onomastics have not received an in-depth study, and proper names still need to be collected and analyzed. The present study deals mainly with the toponymic part, describing the following classes of names: names of settlements of the Verkh-Yazva rural area, names of water bodies, mainly rivers, names of fields, meadows, pastures, and other microtoponymic objects. In total, this makes about 700 studied items. The following conclusions are made: 1) modern toponymy of the upper reaches of the Yazva river is a single and consistent onomastic space, 2) however, it also showcases structural changes due to a significant influence of the Russian toposystem; substrate onomastics, with the exception of hydronyms, is subject to active Russification and washing out of the active vocabulary, 3) the formation of the local toponymic space is influenced by historical and cultural processes, 4) the studied data indicate that macrotoponymy (mainly hydronymy) is more stable compared to the microtoponymy, which is more agile, more responsive to social, cultural, and linguistic processes, 5) it is necessary to immediately record the disappearing substrate names to subsequently consider the obtained data in line with modern theories of onomatology.

The onomastic system of the Azerbaijani language did not remain stable, it constantly changed, and onomastic units replaced one another over time or new ones were created. This event does not happen suddenly, but in connection with the social-political, economic, and historical events taking place in the country and the world, it happens over time and is based on certain regularities. The new onomastic unit created in our language is created according to the rules of the Azerbaijani language and reflects the characteristics of our language. By studying and researching the onomastic units that indicate the antiquity of the Azerbaijani language, it is possible to reveal a number of issues related to the past and language of the people, and to help solve important problems of language, history, ethnography, geography and other fields of science. Toponyms, which form a branch of onomastics, are formed in different forms. The linguistic analysis of toponyms gives us information about the past, history, language, culture, public and social life of the people. In this regard, the study of toponyms of Khojavand region and their historical-linguistic analysis is very important. Place names provide conditions for studying the geographical objects inhabited by people in the historical past, the areas where they are spread, and language features. In terms of studying the history of our language, toponyms are of great importance. In the creation of toponyms, various words - person, tribe, clan, animal, heavenly bodies, plant names, etc. plays an important role. There are the following groups of Azerbaijani toponyms: anthropotoponyms, ethnotoponyms, hydrotoponyms, zootoponyms, phytotoponyms. In addition, there are object names related to the relief structure of the earth: oikonyms, urbanonyms, choronyms, oronyms, dromonyms, social-political toponyms, memoir-memorial toponyms, cosmotoponyms, and descriptive toponyms. In the article, research was conducted on only a certain part of toponyms in Khojavand region.

Abstract:
Our research is devoted to the study of modern Ukrainian onomastics, in particular, of urban onomastics. It was determined that the factors affecting the street names of the city of Lviv include not only linguistic, but also non-linguistic factors, namely: ethno-cultural, cultural-historical and political. In the urbanonymicon of the city of Lviv, the names of streets that were renamed in a certain period of time and the names of streets that have remained unchanged since the beginning of their naming coexist. During the analysis of urban names of the city of Lviv, we found out which norms of the “Ukrainian orthography” correspond to the street names of the city of Lviv, as well as which violations of the norms of the “Ukrainian orthography” contradict the traditions of the Ukrainian language. The Ukrainian onomasticon of the post-Soviet period reflects important social and cultural changes caused by changes in the consciousness of Ukrainians, as well as the process of changing the ideological priorities of modern Ukrainians, which became the cause of transformational changes in the consciousness of society, which are speakers of the language. Modern Ukrainian scientists show great interest in Ukrainian onomastics, in particular onyms and urbanonyms. The development of many Ukrainian onomatopoeia is devoted to the study of the Ukrainian urban onym space of the post-Soviet era. However, today there are not enough studies that would be devoted to the analysis of the linguistic didactic aspect of the Ukrainian urbanonym vocabulary of the post-totalitarian era of the city of Lviv. Street names are a unique source of information about Lviv. They reveal the history, culture, customs and traditions of the city’s residents. During the analysis of urban names of the city of Lviv, we found out which norms of the “Ukrainian spelling” correspond to the names of the streets of the city of Lviv, as well as which violations of the norms of the “Ukrainian spelling” that contradict the traditions of the Ukrainian language occur in the official names of the streets of the city of Lviv. Abstract:
The article discusses the history and methodology of the Ural school of etymology, onomastics and ethnolinguistics, which has existed for more than 60 years at the Department of the Russian Language and General Linguistics of the Ural University (currently under the guidance of Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences E.L. Berezovich and Prof. M.E. Ruth). The review summarizes the methodology of research conducted by the school at the beginning of the 21st century. The main vector of the development of the School, set by the founder of the school A.K. Matveev, is associated with the study of onomastics, the etymological reconstruction of vocabulary and the identification of the results of language contacts. Initially, toponymy was the area of interest, then collective nicknames, astronyms, chrononyms and ethnonyms, as well as various categories of appellative vocabulary, were included in the circle of facts studied. The school’s research is based mainly on its own lexical, onomastic and ethnographic materials collected in the process of field research on the territory of the Russian North. The materials of the card files of the Toponymic Expedition formed the basis of many lexicographic publications. The appearance of the first ethnolinguistic studies was due to the accumulation of experience in the semantic and etymological study of Russian dialect and Slavic vocabulary, as well as systemic ideographic analysis. The ethnolinguistic study of onomastics began with the works of M.E. Ruth on folk astronomy, E.L. Berezovich on North Russian toponymy and was continued in the dissertations of their followers. The paper presents (1) the basic principles of the ethnolinguistic study of onomastics and dialect vocabulary (linguocentricity, breadth of language material, consistency, dialectality, diachronism, a wide historical and cultural context); (2) key sources of ethno-cultural information (internal form of the word, structure of the meaning of the word, semantic-motivational connections of the word, configuration of the ideographic grid); (3) the predominant objects of analysis (semantic-derivational nest, semanticmotivational field); (4) the main methods (motivational, contrastive, areal-typological, ideographic, field and contextual analysis method, etc.); (5) the principles of semanticmotivational reconstruction (maximum systematization of the material, the method of semantic-motivational modeling, distributive analysis, the search for typologically similar phenomena in other languages, the search for semantic parallels in the field of culture); (6) ways of presenting ethnocultural information (method of ethnolinguistic portraiture). A new research direction of the School was the study of the terminology of mining and jewelry, the folk nomenclature of stone, including sociolects – the jargon of miners, prospectors, mineralogists; the slang of illegal diggers; trade names.

Abstract:
Problem statement. The article is devoted to the linguistic and linguistic-and-literary analysis of the short story «Dark alleys» by I.A. Bunin aiming at mastering the methods of such type of analysis of an art work. The article aims to consider the linguistic structure of the story in terms of vocabulary, translation, word formation, morphology and onomastics. Special attention is paid to the linguistic basis and lexical base of this story. Results. This paper highlights and describes the features of outdated, non-equivalent, borrowed and calque words, which are used to express the historical space of the story «Dark alleys» by I.A. Bunin. The author's means of information coding concerning important historical events are analyzed. It is found out by what language means the author expresses the ideological and emotional sides of his story and linguistically significant information about the language units used to reflect the real character in the story is revealed. Conclusion. Analyzing the short story of I.A. Bunin, we came to the conclusion that the onomastic material of the story plays a specific role: the name of the main character was chosen by the author in honor of the Russian officer — Nikolai Alekseevich Kireev, and the name of Job in parallel to the "unhappiness" of the author for his whim. As a result, we prove that the text of the story cannot be covered with any quick reading. This story was written using the tools of different language sections: vocabulary, word formation, morphology and onomastics. The story should be read carefully, because placing it in the collection «Dark alleys», the author thus emphasizes that he describes not only love, but also history, and not one, but two at once.

Abstract:
In the article, the author provides information about the methods used in onomastics. Karakalpakstan, including the collection and study of toponymy materials of the Khodjeyli region by region, presented a number of scientific works interpreted linguistically, historically, geographically and topologically. Linguistic and extralinguistic study of ethnonyms and ethnotonyms and obtaining scientific conclusions is one of the important problems of modern Karakalpak onamastics. The reason is that ethnonyms and ethnotonyms in the Karakalpak language are, on the one hand, modern material, and on the other, very ancient terms. Hence, it is not possible to study them in just one way in research. Before studying ethnotonyms, it is necessary to collect information about the historical, ethnographic and linguistic diversity on which they are based, to get acquainted with scientific sources. The results obtained on such historical and archaeological data, geography, ethnography, folklore in the study of ethnotonyms of Karakalpakstan also have practical and theoretical significance. The emergence of ethnonyms and ethnotoponyms is associated with the ancient history of living in a particular geographical area.

Abstract:
This article explores the role of authentic archival legal, administrative, and diplomatic documents from the Middle Ages and later periods in researching Old Prussian and Lithuanian historical names. It aims to highlight the critical role of German Order documents in preserving the old Baltic onomasticon, focusing on examples from the Prussian and Lithuanian naming systems. The article employs critical comparative analysis of historical documents, name reconstruction methods, and graphemic-morphemic analysis, which reveal that authentic archival documents serve as the primary and most reliable sources of empirical material, while historiographic works are essential for verifying the collected data. The topic is crucial for scholars of both linguistics and history research fields, and is broadly discussed in numerous scientific works. A detailed examination of two Old Prussian and Lithuanian historical personal names illustrates not only the depth of specific name studies but also the impact of synchronic and diachronic analysis on research outcomes. This article also underscores the continuity of research into the Old Prussian and Lithuanian historical onomasticon, leveraging peripheral contextual data to support hypotheses in challenging nomenclature cases. It emphasizes the need for further investigation into historical onomastics, particularly of extinct languages, through the discovery of new sources of empirical material. In this way, the knowledge about the Old Prussian nomenclature is refined, especially when trying to identify the formation of Old Prussian personal names, and on the basis of this, to determine the etymology. Precisely determining the etymology of the names of a extinct language is an essential factor in assessing not only the origin of the name, but also the possible impact of the use of foreign languages on it.

Abstract:
Folk onomastics is a sub-category of socio-onomastics which deals with people’s beliefs and perceptions of names and name use. Interestingly, pragmatics also plays important role in the study of onomastics as names cannot be split up from the context where they are used. The phenomenon of anthroponymy that gradually advances relates to the development of human civilization. Personal name is very pivotal in human life due to the role of name bearers’ in history. Name is not only a name for it carries something along with it throughout the time particularly those who have power and position in history. Babad Banjoemas Wirjaatmadjan (BBW) was a chronicle of Banyumas regency from 1582 until 1932 which was written by Raden Wirjaatmadjan and continued by Raden Poerwasoepradja. As a chronicle of Banyumas regency, BBW displays historical names and aliases related to the cultural context of Banyumas. This article tries to dig out the phenomenon of anthroponymy of Banyumas’ regency leaders (bupati) in BBW as the names indicate the historical background of the bearers. Thus, the research spotlights the cultural values carried by alias or pseudonym of Banyumas leaders. Utilizing descriptive qualitative and library research, I found out that bupati’s names and aliases in BBW were classified based on five conditions: place of death, place of retirement, place of banishment, medal of appreciation, and lifelong action. The result highlights the traditional proverb that good men must die but death cannot kill their names.

Abstract:
The article examines the history and current state of onomastic lexicography in the Slavic countries. The study is driven by the importance of collecting data on Slavic dictionaries of proper names for in-depth research on the theory of Slavic onomastics including comparative studies based on onomastic material of several closely related languages. The purpose of this analytical review is to summarize and evaluate the experience of the lexicographic description of proper names developed in the Slavic countries. The introductory part of the article deals with general problems of the lexicography of proper names. This includes an overview of studies on lexicographic descriptions of onyms in Russia, Belarus, Poland, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Northern Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia, and Slovenia. Some references are made on Slavic onomastic dictionaries published in other countries, primarily in Germany. Dictionaries are grouped by their nature (historical and etymological, normative, linguocultural, dictionaries of an author’s language) and by name types they study (place names, personal names, animal names, etc.). There is also a description of mixed type onomastic dictionaries based on several typological principles, and some new types of dictionaries and lexicographic projects to be published. The authors evaluate contribution made by lexicography experts in different Slavic countries in the development of the research. Special mention is made of the role of Russian onomastic lexicography against the background of other Slavic languages. The final part of the article discusses prospects for the development of Slavic onomastic lexicography requiring collaborative efforts of lexicographers from several Slavic countries.

Abstract:
Proper names occupy an important place in any language, they quickly respond to various changes in society, reflect various historical, economic, social and ideological influences, change their semantic content due to changes in various aspects of cultural and historical development. The problem of collection, systematization and description of proper names arose in Ukrainian onomastics due to the sharp increase in their number at the end of the last century and needs to be organized and comprehensively studied. Ukrainian linguistic studies contain investigations of the ergonyms some regions. But the ergonyms of Kyiv are actively changing under the influence of extralinguistic factors and require special research. The material of this study includes 3,500 names of catering establishments fixed during 2022-2023 in Kyiv. The semantic manifestations of ergonyms of Kyiv for the designation of food establishments are analyzed in the article. The factors, contributing to the creation of such ergonyms are highlighted, the main structural and morphological features of such ergonyms are revealed. Special attention is paid to the sources and ways of borrowing of Kyiv’s ergonyms. The novelty of this study lies in the fact that for the first time ergonyms are considered as an element of the onomastic system and a unit of the onomastic space of Kyiv. A typology of ergonyms and their statistical description by structure and origin, including the fixation of graphics (Latinization, graphic deconstruction, etc.), is proposed.
