Perks, Samuel. "Representations of precarity in Singaporean historical novels." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2017. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/18805/.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses Singaporean historical novels for their capacity to engage the ‘Singapore Story’ in dialogue, and for their representation of precarity as part of the narrative of national economic development. By exploring the motifs of the ‘Garden City’, the ‘Island Nation’ and the ‘global city’, I examine the interrelation of the individual, family, community, national, regional, and global frames of reference in these texts. Precarity is analysed as a phenomenon with a long history and a wide geographical spread, and as a consequence, the ‘uniqueness’ of Singapore as an economic model

With the establishment of Nigerian universities in 1948, academic historians, fuelled by the desire for independence, reclaimed their discipline to write local and national political histories. Abstract:
This thesis looks at the juxtaposition presented by the Eastern Cherokee's struggle to present an accurate historical representation of 'Cherokee' against the backdrop of the more lucrative 'Tourist-ready Indian', influenced by powwow imagery. The thesis gives a brief history of the contemporary powwow, discusses the debates surrounding its intrinsic value to American Indians as historically representative, and then examines the shared elements of Cherokee and powwow history. There is an analysis of the influence of powwow imagery on notions of Cherokee history and its correlation to the expec

Abstract:

Abstract:
My project argues that during the 19th century resistive violence by the enslaved is impossible to meaningfully acknowledge and simultaneously too compelling to ignore. The problem of representing this violence persists in 20th century literary representations of enslaved people's conscious militancy in the U.S. Black violence is often invisible, composing an un-tell-able or at least untold aspect of history. Because these acts that almost completely resist the kind of social/historical encodations of events that make the unfamiliar, that which is distant in time and experience, familiar, viol

Abstract:
This study examines two categories of contemporary British historical fiction. One category is historical fiction that aims at recuperating or revitalizing the English literary heritage through ventriloquism and pastiche. The other is the closely related category of postcolonial rewriting of the histories of the marginalized or the silenced, which poses a challenge to the canon. Four novels have been chosen as examples: A. S. Byatt’s Possession: A Romance (1990), Peter Ackroyd’s Chatterton (1987); Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea (1966) and Marina Warner’s Indigo or
