Abstract:
This paper explores the phenomenon of revisionism in historiography, while focusing in particular on illegitimate revisionism and negationism. It is indisputably true that historiography must be subject to constant revisions. Like all scientific theories, it needs to be characterized by a sort of ?conservative? openness towards new ideas; however, revisions and negations are often put forward without scientific grounding. They reject the well-established historiographical methods, while opening themselves to various kinds of ideologies, biases and manipulations. The paper further offers a synthesized overview of the revisionist practice in dominant parts of the society and historiography in post-communist Serbia. The change in the ideological paradigm that occurred in the 1980s was accompanied by a politically motivated reinterpretation of the past, which primarily focused on World War II in Yugoslavia. In Serbia in the 1990s, Tito?s Partisans were no longer celebrated as national heroes and fighters against fascism; they were replaced by the royalist and nationalist Chetniks led by Draza Mihailovic, whose collaboration with the occupying forces was purposefully glossed over. The nationalist interpretation of history and the new revisionist politics in Serbia were supported by the state and the activities of its three branches: legislative, executive and judicial. In spite of the political changes that took place in Serbia in 2000, the dominant nationalist matrix in historical interpretations and revisionist politics remained unchanged.

Abstract:
Within historiography, ‘historical revisionism’ is the reinterpretation of orthodox views on evidence, motivations, and decision-making processes surrounding a historical event. Revisionists, such as the author of the book here under review, assume the interpretation of a historical event or period, as accepted by the majority of scholars, needs significant change. ‘Historical revisionism’ is certainly a legitimate approach within historiography once it is based on generally accepted facts. However, there is also a danger when ‘revisionism’ results in the distortion of history, which - if it constitutes the denial of historical crimes - is sometimes also called ‘negationism’. In ‘revising’ the past, this kind of illegitimate historical revisionism appeals to the intellect - via techniques illegitimate to historical discourse - to advance a given interpretive historical view.

Abstract:
The term ‘revisionism’ has referred historically to views that challenge an orthodoxy or official position. As narrative, history continually presents itself with the possibility of revision. A history that denies the possibility of revision is ideologically dogmatic. In this sense revisionism cannot be considered as necessarily a negative phenomenon. Yet revisionism is the term that has been used recently to describe historians who discount the extent or even occurrence of historical tragedies such as massacre, genocide, or even the Nazi holocaust. The dogmatic evasion and denunciation of any contradictory evidence by such revisionists can lead to what A. Dirk Moses refers to as the second meaning of revisionism, the posture of denial.

Abstract:
The radical change of politics and ideology in the post-Communist states in the Yugoslav area caused a revaluation of national histories. The production of desirable history has the political support of the current authorities in the states that emerged from the break-up of Yugoslavia. The features of revaluing the past and writing desirable history are: anti-communism, anti-Yugoslavism and radical nationalism. At the same time, the engaged attitude towards anti-fascism as a national phenomenon is evident. Partisan anti-fascism is diminished or denied, the partisan movement and Communist ideology are criminalized by insisting on real and imagined crimes, retaliation and repression against ideological opponents. Communism is completely declared a totalitarianism and a nationally harmful ideology. On the other hand, the ideology and practice of the subjects of collaboration are being relativized and efforts are being made to relativize responsibility, to present collaboration as a national need. Through a series of resolutions and recommendations from 1996 to 2019, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe obliged the former socialist states to reconsider their past, to "dismantle" communism and remove the consequences of Communist rule, to rehabilitate victims of punishment for ideological conflicts. Everything is at the level of theory and anti-communist ideology. Procedures are not standardized, as the re-examination of the Communist-socialist past should be performed by the proposed subjects who can competently revise history and eliminate the consequences of totalitarian rule. History is being re-examined by whoever wants it, and rehabilitation without guilt is being done by local courts. There are no clear statements that revisionist practice is conditioned by European resolutions and declarations, but the character and content of revisionist journalism is in line with the adopted requirements.

Abstract:
This is a participant's account of the movement in Soviet history during the 1970s and 1980s known as “revisionism,” which Sheila Fitzpatrick understands as an iconoclastic challenge by social historians to the dominance in Sovietology of political scientists and the totalitarian model. Particular attention is paid to the debates on the nature of Stalinism, which in the context of the Cold War became highly politicized and bitterly polemical, as well as to internal arguments: for example, between Marxists and non-Marxists and between first- and second-generation revisionists. Revisionists’ early interest in questions of social support and later focus on resistance is discussed. The essay offers an assessment of the intellectual and historiographical contribution of revisionism, including an appreciation of contingency, a new approach to power and the interplay of government and society, new standards of historical professionalism, and an emphasis on archives and primary sources. Finally, a line of continuity between revisionism and its 1990s challenger, “post-revisionism,” is suggested. Comments are provided by Robert V Daniels, J. Arch Getty, Elena A. Osokina, and Jochen Hellbeck.

Ndee, Hamad S. "Sport, culture and society in Tanzania from an African perspective : a study in historical revisionism." Thesis, University of Strathclyde, 2001. http://oleg.lib.strath.ac.uk:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=20366.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite the significance of sport in the modern evolution of the societies of Africa, until recently, there has been a lack of academic interest in the extent of its assimilation into the fabric of these societies. In contrast, this is a cultural history of sport in Tanzania. It involves both cultural continuity and change, of shifting ideologies over time in response to political stimuli, and of the social processes of diffusion, assimilation, alienation, rejection, adaptation and restoration of culture. The thesis examines the place of sport in Tanzanian society in precolonial, colonial and post-colonial periods. Underlying this approach is a revisionism that permits the exploration of sport from a Tanzanian and an African perspective. The consideration of the pre-colonial period traces the different types of physical activities of early eastern Africa and explores their functions in the lives of the indigenous peoples. Then follows a discussion of the arrival of the Arabs and t heir role in the spread of Islam in later eastern Africa and considers the negative attitudes towards sport that resulted from this Islamisation. Next is the review of the German colonisation of the country and the Teutonic introduction of Western education into German East Africa. Hand in hand with this education went marching drills, parades and German gymnastics which have become significant components of school sport in contemporary Tanzania. The crucial contribution of the British imperialist to modern Tanzanian sport in the form of team games, athletics and gymnastics in the shape of 'adapted Athleticism', is then described and analysed. Finally, sport in independent Tanzania and its association with nationalism, modernisation and globalisation is scrutinised. The central argument of this thesis is that modern sport in Tanzania has been a consequence of a multifaceted evolution embracing three distinct periods of the country's history and three disparate legacies: indigenous, Islamic and European, but that it was the British middle class colonial educationalists, more than others, who were responsible for the sport of modern Tanzania. Thus, in independent Tanzania, as in many other developing countries in Africa, modern sport has become clearly associated with Western culture but now, in addition, is linked to nationalism, modernisation and globalisation. The thesis concludes with the argument that Tanzania keenly aspires to integration into the world of global sport but at the same time searches for a distinctive identity by utilising Tanzanian 'sport', past and present, as an integral part of education and as an important ingredient in her culture.

MacDonald, David Bruce. "Balkan holocausts? : comparing genocide myths and historical revisionism in Serbian and Croatian nationalist writing, 1986-1999." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2001. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1652/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores, from both a theoretical and practical basis, how and why Serbian and Croatian nationalist elites used victim centred propaganda to legitimate new state creation during the collapse of Communist Yugoslavia (1986-1999). This often involved applying imagery from the Jewish Holocaust, with overt comparisons between Jewish suffering and the imagined genocides of Serbs and Croats. Chapters 'One' and 'Two' discuss why a rhetoric of victimisation and persecution has been an enduring aspect of national identity, from the ancient Hebrews onwards. This theoretical section develops a model for analysing nationalist teleology, comprising a Golden Age, a Fall from grace, and a Redemption. It also provides a critique of nationalism theory, analysing its successes and failures in understanding the importance of victim centred propaganda and the Holocaust in nationalism writings. Chapters 'Three' to 'Nine' examine how a fear of genocide was used by Serbian and Croatian nationalists to push their people into wars of "self defence". Through a detailed examination of primary source material, these chapters dissect many of the arguments advanced during the conflicts in, Kosovo, Croatia, and Bosnia-Hercegovina. Important comparisons can be made about how history was revised and what purpose these revisions served. Serbian and Croatian propaganda is divided into specific time periods. The time periods examined include the earliest eras, from the 3rd to the 15th centuries AD, followed by the medieval era, and the 19th century. The 20th century is divided into several periods, beginning with the first kingdom of Yugoslavia (1918), World War II, Communist Yugoslavia, the breakdown of the Federation, and the rise of nationalism and violence. A chapter on Bosnia-Hercegovina and the Bosnian Moslems demonstrates how effectively Serbian and Croatian propaganda was applied to a third party.

Birdwhistell, Benjamin P. "Manipulated Museum History and Silenced Memories of Aggression: Historical Revisionism and Japanese Government Censorship of Peace Museums." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2017. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/2312.

Full text
Abstract:
The Japanese government has a vested interest in either avoiding discussion of its war-torn past or arguing for a revisionist take. The need to play up Japanese victimization over Japanese aggression during World War II has led to many museums having their exhibits censored or revised to fit this narrative goal. During the 1990’s, Japan’s national discourse was more open to discussions of war crimes and the damage caused by their aggression. This in turn led to the creation of many “peace museums” that are intended to discuss and confront this history as frankly as possible. At the beginning of the 21st century, public discourse turned against these museums and only private museums have avoided censorship. Some museums, like the Osaka International Peace Center, have been devastated by the censorship. This museum and other museums with similar narrative issues raise questions about appropriate narrative on display. What is appropriate to censor for the sake of respect for the dead? What must be included for the sake of historical accuracy and honesty about the past? These questions are investigated at four different peace museums throughout Japan.

Dunlop, Richard Noel. "Signs of Still Life." Thesis, Griffith University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/366633.

Full text
Abstract:
The research question under investigation is: Working within the genre of still life, how can my current work represent a ‘radical revision’ of selected aspects of this traditional genre? The issues and art historical knowledge informing the creation of my contemporary still lifes is the central subject of this project – involving a selfeffacing, metacognitive process of ‘radical revisionism’ (see Butler, 2005), reflecting contemporary practices among artists and art historians alike. The ancient genre of still life, stemming from Pompeian frescoes and mosaics to the current day, will be exposed to an openly subjective historical narrative, compelled in directions associated with the creation of my own artwork. My own processes of art making will likewise be questioned in terms of the way they might be historically understood against the scholarship of art historians and critics, and where they may find a place within the broad intellectual and academic framework under construction by a range of international artists and art historians. The contribution to be made to new knowledge will by the nature of the subject under investigation and result in an analysis of the continual interaction of making and theorising about art. New theoretical knowledge linked to the creation of my own artworks will be partially constructed through and by the artwork, so that the completed artworks and their making are theorised themselves (Macleod and Holdridge, 2006: 2) against a backdrop of considerable existing writings on the origins, contexts and meanings of still life. The contemporary theorising of Rex Butler (2005) on ‘radical revisionism’ will be important to this endeavour. Butler (2005:9) summarises the difficulties and preferences of the contemporary art historian in bringing to bear present knowledge and values to any study of the past, the subject of an enduring debate in historiography: It is a history, therefore, that sees the artists of the past speaking across what we might like to call ‘time-separated’ areas to contemporary issues. In other words – and we should try to remain aware of just what is so extraordinary about this – it is a history that conceives of the artists of the past as though they were already post-modernists, already reacting in their work to the same concerns that artists of today do. It is a theoretical position which is well-suited to the present study because Butler (2005) seeks to displace a straightforward dichotomy between analysing objects, people or actions on their own past terms and their work and behaviour in relation to contemporary reference points. It is an analytical stance which automatically dismisses claims for an ‘impartial’, ‘objective’ or ‘singular’ history and locates the interpreter as a person who is wilfully intervening in the recasting of the motives and meanings linked to objects, people and actions. The notion of ‘radical revisionism’ will be applied to an historical account of members of the genre of still life as well as to the developmental processes of my own artworks. The work of a range of contemporary artists who have sought to rejuvenate the language and conventions of still life will be examined, followed by the discussion of my own work. Any emerging divide in operation between theory and practice will be viewed as mutable. Central to the written research output was the creation of a major body of works on paper and paintings, and this research includes an analysis of the deliberations involved in the development of my artworks. The works on paper and paintings reveal the application of relatively instinctual artistic decisionmaking processes in conjunction with more reflective theoretical and art-historical considerations. Other mediums such as video or installation could equally have been used by me (or preferred by other artists) in subsequent related investigations to explore similar concerns. Likewise, genres other than still life could be viewed by others as suitable vehicles for reflecting on the interaction between theorising and art making against the long backdrop of an historical genre.

Abstract:
This thesis documents the leading and supporting protagonists of the historical revisionism and denial phenomenon regarding the history of political persecution of the Catalan language and analyzes the arguments for revisionism from the transition to democracy in Spain until the present day, with special emphasis on the playing down of the language policy of the Bourbon dynasty in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the easing of the cultural repression of the Miguel Primo de Rivera dictatorship and the minimization of the attempted cultural genocide of the Franco regime. This revisionist discourse analysis reaches conclusions to explain the deep background of this phenomenon.

Stevens, Jennifer. "Faith, fiction and the historical Jesus : theological revisionism and its influence on fictional representations of the Gospels (c. 1860-1920)." Thesis, University of London, 2006. http://sas-space.sas.ac.uk/355/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the stimulus and influence of studies of the historical Jesus on literary depictions of Christ. It examines imaginative reconstructions of the Gospels, alongside significant works of Biblical scholarship, and seeks to establish the role played by fiction in promulgating ideas of the Higher Criticism in Britain. At the same time, it considers how far the demands of working with a sacred source encouraged or restricted literary innovation. The contextual aspects of the study underline how advances in disciplines such as psychology, anatomy, and archaeology informed writers’ conceptions of the New Testament. The Introduction traces changing perceptions of the relationship between fiction and faith in the light of contemporary developments in Biblical interpretation. Chapter One examines a representative selection of Lives of Jesus, looking specifically at their affinities with fiction. The following chapter explores the kind of prose-fiction writing that developed in response to these Lives and to theological revisionism generally. The second part of the thesis focuses on two Anglo-Irish writers: Oscar Wilde and George Moore. Their transformations of the Gospels are analysed in the context of some of their other literary works, their attitudes to Christianity, and their engagement with theology. Chapter Three considers Wilde’s New Testament oral tales, looking especially at their treatment of current theological debates. Chapter Four considers the reappearance of these tales in the writings of Wilde’s contemporaries, and links the study’s two major authors through its discussion of Frank Harris, an acquaintance of them both. The final two chapters deal with Moore’s abiding interest in the religious temperament, following through the development of his drama, The Apostle, into the novel, The Brook Kerith. The Conclusion considers the aesthetics of Biblical fiction and its contribution to the religious discourses of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Abstract:
This thesis seeks to identify the main intellectual and political objectives of Juan Natalicio González (1897-1966), a Paraguayan writer who played an extensive variety of activities (journalist, essayist, editor, politician, Colorado Partys member and diplomatic). From the analysis of their biographies, their own texts (autobiography, essays and magazine Guarania) and the study done by historians we consider that Gonzalez partially achieved his political ambitions, because he became president of his country but he was deposed and did not return to play a leading role in the national political scene. He succeeded in spreading and consolidation of the revisionist interpretation of Paraguayan history, after participating in various groups of Latin American intellectuals who widely reproduced his version of the history.

Abstract:
The period after independence in Ireland saw the emergence of a new generation of writers eager to promote a literature described as ‘realist’. This realism, which can be understood as a form of anti-idealism, was inspired by literary motivations, but also by motives that were both political and identity driven. In this, it was in tune with the approach of a historiographical movement of the same period, later qualified as revisionism, which aimed at nuancing the dominant nationalist narrative of history. In parallel to their works of fiction, a number of realist writers, including Sean O’Faolain, chose to approach history from the angle of historical biography. Situated at the frontier between history and literature, these biographies were at once historiographical and literary in their intentions, thus giving authors, who were hampered by the censorship regime in place, an avenue of expression in which they could give free rein to their literary sensibilities. On the other hand, fiction, by infiltrating the biographies, and by imposing its tempo, contributed to some extent to the revising of history. Beyond their function as refuge, the biographies can be seen as a laboratory in which the biographer elaborates antidotes to the ills that afflict fictional writing of the period while at the same time perfecting key set pieces of his realist fiction. The biographical character concentrates within him the political and literary tensions of which the author is seeking to divest himself. His realist aesthetic matures as the realist landscapes become ever more steeped in history and bring more realist representations to his fiction. Biography having accommodated fiction and memory in turn permeates the realist fiction in a decisive way, to the point of redefining its themes, its functioning and its form

Morales, Enrique, and John W. Lee. "Proved Reserves Revisions: How Reliable are They?" In SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition. SPE, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.2118/210476-ms.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents a quantitative approach, using disclosed annual revisions of proved reserves, to judge the reasonable certainty of the underlying proved reserves. We identified issues that affect proper categorization of annual reserves changes in a previous SPE publication (SPE 209695) and incorporated them in this paper to quantify the technical revisions of disclosed proved reserves (and their reasonable certainty) during the period 2010 to 2020. Both over- and under-stated certainty of reserves estimates can impact a company's relative valuation, asset impairment, internal depreciation, profit/loss, standardized measure, unit development costs, and other indicators based on proved reserves. We analyzed 141 companies and extracted annual proved reserves changes disclosed from 2010 to 2020 in their SEC 10-K and 20-F forms or from comment letters for total, developed, and undeveloped reserves (in barrels of oil equivalent). As described in SPE 209695, we excluded, when available, (1) the impact due to changes in commodity prices and (2) other factors that distort the estimated technical revisions. We present, with examples based on actual data, the importance of separately analyzing developed and undeveloped proved reserves and the key drivers of the significant differences in average annual revisions between them. If these drivers are not carefully considered, results will lead to incorrect conclusions. Of the 141 companies analyzed, only 70 provided disclosures for five or more consecutive years of revisions for their total and undeveloped reserves during the 2010 to 2020 period. Of these, only 31 (or 22% of the 141) also disclosed revisions due to price changes in their total and undeveloped reserves. Other non-technical revisions are also required to estimate the technical revisions and judge the reasonable certainty of the disclosed developed and undeveloped reserves. However, the number of companies providing sufficient information to estimate technical revisions decreased to only 27 (or 19% of the 141) when we also considered the issues raised in our previous publication. Results indicate that, for many companies that provide the information required for proper analysis, the certainty level of their disclosed developed and undeveloped proved reserves can be significantly different, and appears to be much lower than the reasonable certainty, or high degree of confidence, required for proved developed and undeveloped reserves quantities, pointing towards an apparent over-estimation of historically disclosed proved reserves for many companies. We also highlight the issues that may still affect the estimated technical revisions, which may limit the validity of any conclusions drawn using the disclosed information. Our analysis shows the dubious quality and lack of reliability and consistency of some proved reserves revisions disclosed and highlights the limited value of current practices in disclosures of revisions in annual proved reserves. We provide evidence that call for FASB and/or SEC to provide complementary guidance in critical areas that currently limit the value and reliability of revisions to proved reserves disclosed.

Abstract:
The article analyzes two prominent researches of the 1920–30th (World revolutionary propaganda by H. D. Lasswell and D. Blumenstock and The Language of the Red Army Soldier by I. N. Shpil’rein et al.) and proposes an attempt to look at certain aspects of Soviet science, particularly at the study of linguistic mechanisms of propaganda, not within the framework of a revisionist approach, but including it in the broader scientific and cultural and historical context. The analysis focuses on basically linguistic approaches used by the psychologists, sociologists, and political scientists of the USSR and the USA. The choice of these researches is conditioned, on the one hand, by the mutual interest of the two countries, on the other hand, by the fact that the problem of studying propaganda as a way of spreading communist ideas was equally acute for both countries, albeit with mirror-opposite goals underlying this interest. The analysis of the selected studies demonstrates similarities in study design and methodology. Refs 22.

Full text
Abstract:
Pipeline dents are common occurrences that have a potential integrity threat to the system. Dents are typically found through in-line inspections, and historically, low-resolution in-line inspection geometry tools were used to find the locations of dents. These tools gave little information about shape, orientation or other dent features. Newer ‘high-resolution’ tools give a much clearer picture of the dent shape, location, orientation and location of welds. This information has been previously unavailable and has enabled dent integrity assessment with much greater accuracy and confidence. However this still leaves the question of how to best address the information from older, low-resolution inspection tools. In the past, CSA Z662 required that all dents with a deflection greater than 6% or that contained stress concentrators, including welds, had to be repaired. In the newly published 2003 edition of CSA Z662, dents can be assessed by an engineering assessment to determine their acceptability. Historical evidence has shown that dents less than 6% can also be subject to failure under certain conditions, and is indicated in the notes of CSA Z662-03 10.8.2.4.2. Dents that contain stress concentrators, including corrosion, welds and cracks must be given special consideration, however often little information is available for the dent from solely a geometry tool. TransCanada PipeLines Limited has been involved in the development of a dent assessment methodology for several years. Based on the 2003 revisions to CSA Z662, TransCanada has started to implement a dent integrity management program. This paper discusses the approach taken by TransCanada: to create a database of dent features, classification of dents, finite element analysis (FEA) to determine cyclic stress spectra, fatigue analysis, validation through dig programs, and the management of these features from a system integrity standpoint.

"An Approach to Establishing Manufacturing Process and Vintage of Line Pipe Using In-Situ Nondestructive Examination and Historical Manufacturing Data." In 2020 13th International Pipeline Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/ipc2020-9589.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The October 2019 revisions to US federal rules governing natural gas pipelines require Operators to establish vintage and manufacturing process for line-pipe assets with incomplete records. Vintage and manufacturing process are considerations when establishing populations of pipe for maximum allowable operating pressure (MAOP) reconfirmation, materials verification, and integrity management programs. Additionally, the rule changes establish an allowance to utilize in-situ nondestructive examination (NDE) technologies to verify line-pipe material properties including strength, composition, microstructure, and hardness. Economic and market demands have driven changes in steelmaking technologies and pipe-forming approaches. Knowledge of the relationships between processing, microstructure and mechanical properties have been fundamental to the evolution of steel line pipe manufacturing. Product specifications and standards for the manufacture and testing of pipe and tube have crystallized this evolution as performance expectations increased. The resulting manufacturing process changes have left a variety of “fingerprints” observable from in-situ materials verification NDE data, when analyzed holistically. The purpose of this work is to enable operators to begin leveraging these fingerprints to illuminate the vintage and manufacturing process of their line pipe assets using the NDE data. A method is proposed to re-establish line-pipe asset manufacturing and vintage records using historical line pipe manufacturing practices and NDE materials verification data.

Abstract:
Code Case N-597-2 provides procedures and acceptance criteria for the evaluation of piping items subjected to wall thinning mechanisms such as flow-accelerated corrosion (FAC). The acceptance criteria ensure that margins equivalent to those of the ASME B&PV Code are maintained. Subsequent to the publication of Code Case N-597-2, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) found the Code Case conditionally acceptable. A number of task items have been undertaken by the ASME Section XI Working Group on Pipe Flaw Evaluation (WGPFE) to address the NRC conditions. A 2006 ASME Pressure Vessels and Piping (PVP) Division conference paper was published to provide an expanded explanation of the technical basis for Code Case N-597-2. A 2009 PVP paper was published to provide results of validation of evaluation procedures and acceptance criteria in Code Case N-597-2 against experimental and historic wall thinning events. More recently, revisions to Code Case N-597-2 have been made and were proposed as N-597-3. Significant changes have been made in the proposed revised Code Case to clarify the technical requirements and address the NRC concerns over N-597-2. The technical basis for revising Code Case N-597-2 is provided in this paper.

Abstract:
The day to day challenges of maintaining legacy complex warships demands an ever increasing level of support to address the through life challenges of equipment obsolescence and an increasing number of emergent defects. To improve the materiel state of the in service platforms, a greater use of technology and data analytics is now being applied optimising the maintenance and through life support of key equipment and systems. This paper provides a case study of the Babcock Warship Technical Authority (WTA) contribution to an equipment availability review of the maintenance schedule of the Voith Schneider Propulsion (VSP) system for the Single Role Mine Hunter (SRMH) Sandown class. The paper reviews the trends from historical oil sampling and vibration monitoring data, in combination with operational defects. These trends were compared with the reliability centred maintenance tasks to optimise support. The FMECA methodology has been applied to this information to provide recommendations on (i) the amount of condition based monitoring being applied, (ii) revisions to the standard operating procedures, (iii) the logging of environmental conditions; and (iv) baselining of equipment performance. The paper also considers the work being undertaken to optimise the through life support of the equipment, covering logistics, documentation and training. The role of the WTA is to introduce innovation and deliver intelligence lead support solutions at the waterfront to enhance the crew’s ability to take ownership and maintain their platform efficiently. This case study provides an example of how data trending and analysis can optimise the maintenance routine for key equipment on legacy platforms.

Abstract:

Medrano, Juan, Adam Friedmann, Moshe (Morris) Soller, Ehud Lipkin, and Abraham Korol. High resolution linkage disequilibrium mapping of QTL affecting milk production traits in Israel Holstein dairy cattle. United States Department of Agriculture, March 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2008.7696509.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
Original objectives: To create BAC contigs covering two QTL containing chromosomal regions (QTLR) and obtain BAC end sequence information as a platform for SNP identification. Use the SNPs to search for marker-QTL linkage disequilibrium (LD) in the test populations (US and Israel Holstein cattle). Identify candidate genes, test for association with dairy cattle production and functional traits, and confirm any associations in a secondary test population. Revisions in the course of the project: The selective recombinant genotyping (SRG) methodology which we implemented to provide moderate resolution QTL mapping turned out to be less effective than expected, due to problems introduced by incomplete marker informativity. This required a no-cost one-year extension of the project. Aside from this, the project was implemented essentially as envisaged, but only with respect to a single QTLR and single population association-test. Background to the topic. Dairy cattle breeders are looking to marker-assisted selection (MAS) as a means of identifying genetically superior sires and dams. MAS based on population-wide LD can be many times more effective than MAS based on within-family linkage mapping. In this proposal we developed a protocol leading from family based QTL mapping to population-wide LD between markers and the QTL Major conclusions, solutions, achievements. The critical importance of marker informativity for application of the SRG design in outcrossing random mating populations was identified, and an alternative Fractioned Pool Design (FPD) based on selective DNA pooling was developed. We demonstrated the feasibility of constructing a BAC contig across a targeted chromosomal region flanking the marker RM188 on bovine chromosome BTA4, which was shown in previous work to contain a QTL affecting milk production traits. BAC end sequences were obtained and successfully screened for SNPs. LD studies of these SNPs in the Israel population, and of an independent set of SNPs taken across the entire proximal region of BTA4 in the USA population, showed a much lower degree of LD than previously reported in the literature. Only at distances in the sub-cM level did an appreciable fraction of SNP marker-pairs show levels of LD useful for MAS. In contrast, studies in the Israel population using microsatellite markers, presented an equivalent degree of LD at a 1-5 separation distance. SNP LD appeared to reflect historical population size of Bostaurus (Ne=5000- 10,000), while microsatellite LD appeared to be in proportion to more recent effective population size of the Holstein breed (Ne=50-100). An appreciable fraction of the observed LD was due to Family admixture structure of the Holstein population. The SNPs MEOX2/IF2G (found within the gene SETMAR at 23,000 bp from RM188) and SNP23 were significantly associated with PTA protein, Cheese dollars and Net Merit Protein in the Davis bull resource population, and were also associated with protein and casein percentages in the Davis cow resource population. Implications. These studies document a major difference in degree of LD presented by SNPs as compared to microsatellites, and raise questions as to the source of this difference and its implications for QTL mapping and MAS. The study lends significant support to the targeted approach to fine map a previously identified QTL. Using high density genotyping with SNP discovered in flanking genes to the QTL, we have identified important markers associated with milk protein percentage that can be tested in markers assisted selection programs.
