Abstract:
The relevance of the book is determined by the growing demand on the part of the state and society for the formation of the state historical policy of Russia. The spread of anti—Russian historical myths, including revisionist myths regarding the history of the Second World War, issues of patriotic education of Russian citizens, the need to form a common civil identity - all this actualizes the state's targeted appeal to the problems of history, which was reflected in the relevant amendments to the Constitution of the Russian Federation. The textbook reveals the basic foundations of the methodology, techniques and content of the formation of historical policy, summarizes the world and Russian experience of its implementation. The problematic agenda, challenges and threats for Russia related to the perception and interpretation of the past both at home and abroad are reconstructed. Meets the requirements of the federal state educational standards of higher education of the latest generation. The presented textbook is aimed at use in the university educational process in preparation for bachelor's and master's degree courses on 03/41/04 and 04/41/04 "Political Science", but can be used in the training of historians and history teachers.

Abstract:
More than 100 species of large odontocete cetaceans (i.e., families Ziphiidae, Physeteridae, and Kogiidae) have been described since our binomial nomenclatorial system was initiated by Carl Linnaeus in 1758. Only a fraction of these are currently recognized as valid species. The taxonomic revisions that are being recommended by recent and ongoing studies within this group require a detailed understanding of their nomenclatural history. We here review all 114 nominal species of extant beaked and sperm whales. Of these, 27 species are currently considered valid, 6 are nomina dubia, 10 are nomina nuda, and the rest (71) are junior synonyms. In addition, we provide several appendices that attempt to settle the controversy over the name of the sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus), provide biographies of the main authors of names, give a glossary of terms, and summarize information on the status of type specimens. Because beaked whales are still so poorly known, there are likely to be future splits and descriptions of new species and/or subspecies. This paper is intended to assist in sorting out nomenclature in such taxonomic cases.

Abstract:
What motivates states to act the way they do? This book focuses on a particular kind of motivation inclining a state to challenge the existing norms, rules, and institutions of international order. Specifically, it addresses the concept of revisionism, which has loomed large in international relations narratives but has remained largely understudied until recently. The authors offer a critique of the existing discourse on revisionism and investigate the historical origin and evolution of the foreign policy orientations of revisionist states in the past. They moreover introduce an ensemble of indicators to discern and compare the extent of revisionist tendencies on the part of contemporary China and the United States. Questioning the facile assumption that past episodes will repeat in the future, they argue that “hard” revisionism relying on war and conquest is less viable and likely in today’s world. Instead, “soft” revisionism seeking to promote institutional change is more relevant and likely. They attend especially to contemporary Sino-American relations and conclude that much of the current discourse based on power-transition theory is problematic. Contrary to this theory, a dominant power is not inevitably committed to the defense of international order, nor does a rising power usually have a revisionist agenda to challenge this order. The transformation of international order does not necessarily require a power transition between China and the United States, nor does a possible power transition between these two countries necessarily augur war.

Abstract:
This chapter examines Argentine historical writing. In the period before 1945, historical writing was not particularly distinguished, and the end of the war did not change that. Two major approaches to the writing of history existed: the Nueva Escuela Histórica (New School of History) and Revisionism. The dominant force was the former, which by 1945 was far from new. The Nueva Escuela historians were interested in questions of methodology, claiming to be focused on only the historical evidence. They closely read their documents and eschewed wider interpretations, particularly those that seemed tied to the current national situation. In the 1930s, Revisionism challenged the Nueva Escuela’s liberal vision of the past. Revisionism was a rejection of Argentina’s cosmopolitan modernizing tendencies and an exaltation of its Hispanic past, stressing nationalism and rejecting foreign influence. Its key goals were political: to rethink the past in order to shape the future.

Abstract:
During the Reformation, arguments over the near and distant past are crucial for making people increasingly aware of the plurality of competing, even contradictory, accounts of the past. This article examines the way in which historical accounts of Richard III’s reign point to the emergence of a historiographical consciousness, an awareness that written history is partial in both senses of the word. It considers the extent of John Foxe’s influence on English history writing and how he made revisionist history mainstream. It analyses chronicle history plays, especiallyThe True Tragedie of Richard III, as evidence that historiographical consciousness was widespread in the period. It also treats the connection between dissimulation and conspiracy in Thomas More’sHistoryand cites George Buck’sThe History of King Richard III(1619) as a remarkable example of revisionism that deploys historical learning against received opinion.
