Abstract:
Research was conducted to analyse corros ion and tribological failures in The Tank Museum Bovington military tanks . Due to the age of the exhibits corrosion of vital components has become a significant issue, it is vitally important to preserve these artefa cts for future generations and so to do this effectively we need to monitor and reduce this corrosion as far as realistically possible. A case study of the historic military tanks followed by experimental research analyses is presented. Structural degradat ion through corrosion and engine wear has been i dentified and analysed . Materials were processed/manufactured during 2 nd Wor ld War, their composition was unknown. Therefore state - of - the - art characterisation techniques were performed on samples collected fr om the M10, Sherman, Centaur and Tiger 1 to obtain material compositions and to identify nearest standards . A bench mark of material loss due to corrosion so far, has been achieved in the M10, Sherman, Centaur, BT – R 60 and King Tiger t h rough ultrasonic c orrosion mapping . Material loss because of corrosion was high in the Centaur in comparison to the Sherman, M10, BT R – 60 and King Tiger s amples. C orrosion analyses techniques were conducted on samples from three tanks the M10, Sherman and Centaur to investigate corrosion m orphology on the tanks surfaces and corrosion propagation from surface to sub - surface level . During this experimental work various corrosion contaminants, sub - surf ace crack s and defects were identified. Corrosion layer/ residues we re relatively thick (approximately 250 μ m) on the surfaces of the M10, wherea s the phenomenon of corrosion pits was wide spread in the Centaur. C orrosion was influenced by the presence of surface contaminants and sub - surface defects such as slags, sulphide inclusions and corrosive pits. These factors alone and/o r in combination were observed to be a serious issue in limiting vehicles‟ longevity. Study of the environments both inside and outside the museum has been conducted to relate corrosion activity wit hin the conte xt. Based upon the data gathered simulated environmental corrosion tests were conducted to quantify corrosion accumulation under a controlled museum environment suitable for the museum visitors. Some degree of corrosion build - up was observed o n the samples under cont rolled environments. Prohesion test was conducted to evaluate viability of the material s , coating and primer. M aterial ability to resist adverse environmental conditions was negligible. These results are of particular interest for t he vehicles which are exposed in uncontrolled environment. Exposure of the primer an d coating to prohesion test showed, that the primer was able to resist failures during the entire test duration . However breakdown of th e coating was observed during the te st . Wear analyses of the o riginal piston which was designed before/during the 2 nd World War showed enhanced material composition and tribological pro perties than the new replacement piston . F ailures in the replacement piston and cylinder - liner could be att ributed to inadequate material selection and design. A sustainable model to extend longevity and to retard structural aging of the military tanks in The Tank Museum has been proposed.

Hardman, Scott John. "Consumer adoption of fuel cell vehicles : lessons from historical innovations and early adopters of battery electric vehicles." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2016. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7011/.

Full text
Abstract:
Fuel cell vehicles (FCVs), are one possible solution to address transportation-related climate change, urban air pollution and fossil fuel resource depletion. To solve these issues they need to displace internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs), the aim of this thesis is to understand whether FCVs can achieve this. First case studies of successful historical innovations are explored. Second the consumer adoption of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) is studied in detail by using questionnaire surveys and in-depth interviews. Finally, consumer attitudes and perceptions towards FCVs are investigated by conducting in-depth interviews and a FCV trial. From all of these results this thesis finds that FCVs have fewer benefits as perceived by consumers compared to BEVs and ICEVs. This means that consumers may preferentially adopt BEVs and will not be attracted to FCVs. This thesis makes recommendations on how to improve the attributes of FCVs so that they have more benefits for consumers. These efforts would increase the likelihood of consumers adopting FCVs. However, this thesis suggests that the adoption of FCVs still looks unlikely and that fuel cell (FC) stakeholders should seek to concentrate their efforts towards applications of FCs that have viable market entry potential.

Abstract:
Today’s trucks are built to be modular in order to fit the customer’s specific needs. This means that no two vehicles are  alike, and that makes it difficult to create universal models for diagnosis. When a truckor bus suffers from a breakdown, it is important that the vehicle comes back on the road as soon as possible since breakdowns cause downtime and repair costs. In a shared effort between researchers from Scania, SICS and LiU a tool forcost-efficient off-site guided troubleshooting is being developed, named DiaGuide2. This tool has an interactive interface for use both when the vehicle is in the workshop and on the road. DiaGuide2 will isolate the probable causes then recommend and plan the necessary actions, based on models that describe the vehicle, to resolve all present problems. This thesis introduces an implementation of a diagnosis tool based on a method from literature, called Fault Tree Analysis(FTA). The DiaGuide2 diagnoser module, which uses a probabilistic Bayesian Network model, will be compared against this FTA top-down deductive model. The main goal of the comparison is to find out if it is possible for the DiaGuide2 to carryout a successful diagnostic of a complex system in the vehicle, and how well it can do that when compared to the Fault Tree Analysis tool. The results of this study will helpfind out the advantages and limitations of both tools.

Zhou, Fang. ""The wheels that transformed the city: the historical development of public transportation systems in Shanghai, 1843-1937"." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/37142.

Full text
Abstract:
The city of Shanghai was transformed from a treaty port of around half a million people when the British first arrived after the end of the Opium War to become the most populous, prosperous, and cosmopolitan metropolis in China by the early 20th century. The development of public transportation systems contributed significantly to the urban expansion and growth of the city, as well as in reshaping the city's identity. This dissertation examined the impact of public transportation on the urban landscape of Shanghai by focusing on three major issues: "tradition versus modernity", state and society relations, and the relationship between technology and society. As a divided city governed by three separate political jurisdictions, Shanghai offered a unique perspective in understanding the roles public transportation and urban planning played in changing a city's layout. This dissertation addressed the specific differences in the development of urban infrastructure and its impact on population growth, mobility and accessibility, and economic prosperity of the British controlled International Settlement, the French Concession, and the Chinese city. The first half of the dissertation analyzed the roles in which "traditional" man-powered vehicles such as the wheelbarrow, sedan chair, horse-drawn carriage, and rickshaw played, before delving into the arrival of "modern" machine-powered vehicles such as automobiles, trams, trolleys, and buses in the early 20th century. Each form of transportation vehicle is discussed for its specific role, and the type of clientele it catered. This dissertation argued that man-powered vehicles and machine-powered vehicles did not necessarily compete with each other for passengers, as each type of vehicle served its specific purposes and clients. Public transportation; just like food, clothing, or housing is a form of material culture where one's socioeconomic or class status is revealed by the type of transport one chooses. Because the different types of vehicles did not directly compete with each other, they all saw significant increases in ridership. The 'tradition versus modernity" theme is aimed at addressing the bigger picture of "continuity and change", where Shanghai was transformed by foreign influences yet at the same time it still retained traditional Chinese characteristics to form a complex identity. The second half of the dissertation dealt with state and society relations, and the relationship of technology and society. The issue of public versus private responsibility is addressed with historical analysis of government orchestrated urban planning and the private sector providing the services to fulfill the people's needs and demands. In focusing on these two themes, this dissertation argued that technology has inherent political agenda attached to it, as government policies specifically created areas of the city which had better public transportation infrastructure, which led to these parts of the city being more commercially prosperous and vibrant than others. Routes, lines, and stops were designated with specific political purposes in mind, and public transportation accessibility contributed to the uneven economic developments across the city. The Greater Shanghai Project of 1927-1937 was a specific attempt by the Chinese government to create a new city center that could shift the population away from the foreign concessions into the Chinese territories. This dissertation argued that this campaign would not have been feasible even without the Japanese attack due to insufficient public funds. The findings in this dissertation will hopefully add to the scholarship on the history of Shanghai and the history of technology in China.

Keith, RuAnn Rae. "Constructing Professionalism: Reifying the Historical Inevitability of Commercialization in Mass Media Communication." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2009. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/communication_diss/16.

Full text
Abstract:
American political culture has virtually precluded public discussion about the fundamental weaknesses of capitalism, forcing media reformers to argue defensively that commercial broadcasting is a special case of market failure. This investigation questions the historical inevitability of commercialized mass media structure by examining how the ideology of media professionalism is deployed in public debate over noncommercial uses of mass media resources. The work of John Dewey and Walter Lippmann frame a theoretical understanding of how professional autonomy works in opposition to community, and thus how professionalization works in opposition to a shared democratic sphere. Relying on the fundamental concepts of discursive formations studied in depth by Michel Foucault, three case studies analyze historic moments (the invention of listener support by Lewis Hill, the rise of news reporting by community television volunteers, and the introduction of media literacy in K-12 public education) that offer evidence of discursive breaks within the constructions of professionalism that support commercialization, and what those breaks suggest about the re-instantiation of the historical inevitability of the commercial regime. The conclusion discusses how conditions have led us to a point of deprofessionalization, a state in which media consumers disarm the notion of professionalism before it can be deployed as a governing relation, and how deproduction of authoritative texts effectively contains the power of professionalized norms. INDEX WORDS: Professionalism, Professionalization, Media reform, Commercialization, Noncommercial media, Dewey-Lippmann debate, Lewis Hill, Community television, Media literacy, Deproduction, Deprofessionalization

Abstract:
Not all children begin their educational journey on equal footing. The purpose of this study is to investigate how universal prekindergarten (UPK) can serve as a key to remedying issues surrounding educational inequity. In order to understand educational inequity, I dive into the history of neighborhood racial segregation in the United States, and how it led to our currently unjust system. Racial segregation, specifically city zoning laws, created racially separate neighborhoods that are still relatively homogenous to this day. In order to ascertain how UPK could combat these issues stemming from historic racial segregation, I evaluate programs in three states to highlight the approach to UPK that each has implemented: New York, Georgia, and Oklahoma. Program features in Oklahoma have produced high-quality standards and the program has reached a larger percentage of 4-year-olds. I discuss multiple dimensions of proposed education reform, particularly for students of color, including the culturally-situated nature of high-stakes testing and its inability to fully capture student and school progress. I propose a culturally empowering approach to UPK, situated within the Dallas community, as a solution to current educational inequity.

Abstract:
The Swedish motor-vehicle inspection has worked very well and was monopolized in 1965. After the monopolization, the company AB Svensk Bilprovning was formed and had a monopoly until 2010 when the bourgeois government deregulated the monopoly for the motor-vehicle inspection services. It had been discussed earlier around the 1990s but the planned deregulation of the service did not occur. The main reason for the deregulation was for the service to act on a competitive market which would improve it in several aspects. One of the main aspects were the availability. The deregulation in 2010 had positive effects and mainly the availability increased throughout Sweden. In year 2014 the social-democratic party were not satisfied before or after deregulation even though it improved the service. The bourgeois on the other hand were very satisfied of the results.

Albrecht, Martin. "Enabling socio-technical transitions – electric vehicles and high voltage electricity grids as focal points of low emission futures." Licentiate thesis, KTH, Miljöstrategisk analys (fms), 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-206973.

Abstract:
Today humankind is facing numerous sustainability challenges that require us to question CO2 intensive practices like those present in the transport and energy sector. To meet those challenges, many countries have adopted ambitious climate targets. Achieving such targets requires an understanding of the wider socio-technical context of transitions. The aim of this licentiate thesis is therefore to analyse such socio-technical transitions towards low-emission futures enabled by the electrification of passenger cars and high voltage grid development. A combination of different transitions theories (for ex. Multi-level perspective and Technological innovation systems) and institutional theory has been used. To reach the aim paper I analyses the climate impacts of electric vehicles (EVs) and policy measures to achieve a breakthrough scenario for EVs. The results show that a mixture of short and long term policies are needed that take into account the technology development stage and behavioural aspects of EV adopters. Paper II addresses the need to include the high voltage transmission grid and its planning procedures as a central part of debates on transitions. Therefore the opportunities, challenges and reasons for conflict in the established regime are studied. The results show that in order to achieve a sustainable grid development regime, it is necessary to spend time on achieving legitimacy and social sustainability. The third paper uses semi-structured expert interviews and focuses on innovation dynamics for EV adoption. By focusing on dynamics instead of single policy measures, it is possible to grasp interactions within a niche, but also in between a niche, regime and landscape. The results show that strong initial technology legitimacy was needed to start substantial innovation dynamics. This could be further strengthened with a strong and broad coalition of actors. Both those factors led, if present, to an improved variety and match of policy instruments. As such this thesis has shown that transitions are not just about technology or policy instruments as such but about the dynamics and processes needed to enable them. This can be relevant in other transitions that otherwise may underestimate the importance of these components.

This study uses the company's own long-term storage of information, such as tracking data, vehicle location data. With reference to the concept of pheromones update in the ant colony optimization, the driver's accumulated vehicle information is retain as expert experience, and the base of the company's knowledge base is established for reference when the company plans the delivery route. Not only can the driver's daily delivery route habits be satisfied, but also the driving route can be stored. It can reduce the adaptation time of new drivers to different areas, and improve the delivery efficiency and reduce the driver's learning cost. In order to construct effective and high-liberal characteristics, this research mainly uses QGIS, Python, MongoDB and other open source free software for development and design. Such will improve the flexibility of adjustment required by enterprises in the future. This study proposed a meta-heuristic method, named as the Historical Data Oriented Ant Colony Optimization (HDOACO), which can effectively integrate vehicle position data and establish a historical pheromone database. The HDOACO method includes this pheromone parameter into the path cost. At the same time, the HDOACO method considers two important factors of driving experience and driving distance in its formula. To confirm the possibility of the proposed HDOACO algorithm, 30 sets of actual cases were tested. After comparing the solved path results with the actual driver's driving mileage, the operating path distance can reduce by an average of 45.44%. Such results imply that the HDOACO method could enhance the new drivers’ efficiency and reduce delivery time.

Ferrão, Leonor Carmo Rosa Mendes. "Historical reconstructions of raw materials based on a blue smalt coating applied to a seventeenth-century altarpiece." Master's thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/16408.

Full text
Abstract:
Based on samples cross-sections from the Main Altarpiece of the Coimbra Old Cathedral, where a blue coating performed in 1685 is observed (that was partly covered with a Prussian blue-containing overpaint), the raw materials present in this coating were reproduced and studied. Blue areas were painted with smalt in oil, according to the contract signed by Manoel da Costa Pereira in 1684 and the analysis by Le Gac in 2009. Based on these, three batches of cobalt-based glasses (S1, S2 and S3) were heated and melted in alumina crucibles in the kiln. S1 contained 6.03 % of cobalt oxide, S2 contained 2.10 %, with the addition of 1.49 % of magnesium oxide, and S3 contained 6.82 % of cobalt oxide, with the addition of 4.63% of antimony trioxide. These batches were ground mechanically with water and manually with different vehicles stated in recipes. The results were studied by means of OM, SEM-EDS, X-Ray CT, Colorimetry and Vickers HT. Different binders were also produced and analyzed by means of μ-FTIR, in order to perform their characterization and obtain Standard Spectra. Since anhydrite was identified in the ground layers, gypsum from Óbidos was also characterized by XRD. The main goal of this thesis was to study all the raw materials present in the 1685-blue coating, in order to allow the historically accurate reconstruction of the layers build-up in the next future.

Travel time estimation and prediction are important for the driving efficiency in a long-distance travelling. The accurate travel time on the highway is the key to improve the efficiency of transportation systems. This paper focuses on travel time estimation and prediction for highways by designing the Weighted Root-Mean-Square Similarity (Weighted-RMSS) method to predict highway travel time when current flow status are known and by designing the Multiple Slope-Based Linear Regression (Multi-SBLR) method to predict highway travel time based on historical traffic data when current flow status is unknown. The proposed estimation and prediction methods can be used to efficiently control the traffic management system and provide the best driving efficiency. With the collected data of current flow status, we use the proposed Weighted-RMSS method to determine the most similar historical data. The optimal value of k is obtained using traffic dependencies based on current and historical traffic data. When current flow status is not available, we use the proposed Multi-SBLR method to predict travel time based on the linear relationship of the same consecutive weekday and weekend. To verify the feasibility and superiority of our proposed methods, we adopt the open ETC data of highways in Taiwan to evaluate the prediction accuracy of our approaches, which outperform existing methods and can significantly reduce the errors of travel time prediction.

Nahirnick, Natasha K. "Long-term spatial-temporal eelgrass (Zostera marina) habitat change (1932-2016) in the Salish Sea using historic aerial photography and unmanned aerial vehicle." Thesis, 2018. https://dspace.library.uvic.ca//handle/1828/9380.

Full text
Abstract:
Eelgrass (Zostera marina) is a critical nearshore marine habitat for juvenile Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) as they depart from their natal streams. Given the poor marine survival of Coho (O. kisutch) and Chinook (O. tshawytscha) salmon juveniles in recent decades, it is hypothesized that deteriorating eelgrass habitats could contribute to their low survival. The primary goal of this research was to investigate the possible long-term spatial-temporal trends in eelgrass habitat in the Salish Sea and was addressed by two main objectives: (1) Define a methodology for mapping eelgrass habitats using UAV imagery to create a baseline for long-term mapping; and (2) Assess changes in eelgrass area coverage and fragmentation over the period of 1932-2016 using historic aerial photographs and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) imagery, and assess the relationship between eelgrass and residential housing density and shoreline activities. Three study sites in the Southern Gulf Islands of the Salish Sea were chosen for analysis. The overall accuracies of eelgrass delineation from UAV imagery were 95.3%, 88.9%, and 90.1% for Village Bay, Horton Bay, and Lyall Harbour, respectively. The UAV method was found to be highly effective for this size of study site, however results were impacted by the environmental conditions at the time of acquisition, namely: sun angle, tidal height, cloud cover, water clarity, and wind speed. The results from the first objective were incorporated into a long-term dataset of historic aerial photography and used to evaluate changes in eelgrass area and fragmentation. All three eelgrass meadows showed a deteriorating trend in eelgrass condition. On average, eelgrass area coverage decreases by 41% while meadow complexity as indicated by the shape index increases by 76%. Shoreline activities (boats, docks, log booms, and shoreline armouring) and residential housing density increased markedly at all sites over the study period. By using a linear correlation model, it was revealed that eelgrass areal coverage and fragmentation (Shape Index) were, in general, very strongly correlated to these landscape-level coastal environmental indicators. While this correlation model is not meant to show a direct causative impact on eelgrass at these sites, these results suggest an overall deterioration of coastal environmental health in the Salish Sea due to a dramatic increase in the use of the coastal zone, as well as likely declines in water quality due to urbanization.
