Abstract:
In the context of the rapid development of China's urbanization economy and the current situation of 'hollow villages' era., how to effectively inherit and protect the Chinese traditional villages as cultural heritage is an important issue for China’s beautiful rural construction. The economic development of villages is based on the reasonable configuration of business, as an important carrier of the layout of the format，the architectural space and street space of the village are linked together for analysis and research, so as to achieve the 'win-win' effect of high-quality business form and the rational use and protection of historical building space.This paper takes Pingshan Village, a famous historical and cultural village in Yi county, China, as the research object, collects data through historical record, on-site investigations and interviews, and uses geographic information technology, point of interest combing and spatial syntax analysis to study the spatial characteristics of the current status of the Pingshan Village’s commercial concentrated water street. Besides, this paper makes quantitative analysis of the number of business forms in JiyangXi water street, spatial analysis of the commercial layout, and fixed-point analysis of the flow of people. With the results above, this paper takes correlation analysis on the results of analyzing spatial characteristics and the layout of business forms, draws up the advantages and disadvantages of the main commercial space layout of Pingshan Village as well as the optimization strategy, thereby reaches the design suggestions on the adjustment of the business forms in different spaces in traditional village planning.

Abstract:
Shanxi ancient villages and towns have a prominent representative in the historical and cultural dwellings in the Yellow River Valley. Based on the field research, this paper summarizes the experience in the protection and exploitation of Shanxi’s ancient villages into four modes, which mainly include the Jingsheng Mode, based on the county level’s fiscal revenue, the ancient Zhangbi Model driven by the county’s economy, the Huangcheng village Model developed by its rural economy, and the Shangzhuang Village’s Protective model based mainly on investment from individuals. These protection and development modes have achieved some initial results. In contrast with these, some historical towns represented by Ancient Town of Qikou are facing adverse conditions for emphasizing the protection too much to expand themselves. This paper will come up with a brief way for development.

Abstract:
This study discusses the leadership and the independence system of Javanese villages in the Past. In maritime village communities - agrarian, there are people who are trusted to lead, with the dynamics of independence. The village naturally regulates its own community based on village bound. The village burden is related to the demands of interests originating from the colonial supra village, forcing the village to be burdened with the interests of supplying goods for the needs of the world market by intensifying feudal housing. This topic is relevant to the village funding program, empowerment of rural communities with substantial funds, but in the implementation, it is still half-hearted because there is no complete belief that the village has actually been proven capable of taking care of itself and meeting its own needs. To discuss this problem, the historical method is used by reviewing important books specifically discussing villages. The results of the study provide evidence that maritime agrarian villages in Java already have leadership independence that practices in managing and meeting among the villagers. Thus, it is undoubted about the ability to channeling the village funds.

ABSTRACT Background A ‘healthy village’ concept as a healthy setting approach is lacking in India, where approximately 70% of population lives in villages. Despite various village development programs, the quality of life in Indian villages continues to be poor. Objective To evaluate some villages in district Ambala as healthy villages. Materials and methods This cross-sectional study of seven villages under a sub center was conducted during January to April 2010. These villages were compared on the basis of scores obtained on a checklist developed for evaluating ‘healthy village’. The village headmen, committee members, various health workers, accredited social health activists and anganwadi workers were also interviewed. Results The sub center headquarter, the largest village, scored maximum among seven villages (90/130; 69.2%). Lowest score was observed in the smallest village (49/130; 37.7%). Most villages faired poorly on intersectoral coordination, youth activities, and historical/cultural heritage. Performance of all villages on ‘availability of basic statistics’ and ‘animal shelter’ was excellent. Conclusion Apparently, population size of a village was linked with its being a healthy village. None of the village had an excellent score. Overall, an average rating can be assigned to these villages as healthy village. How to cite this article Kalyanasundaram M, Singh A, Singh N. Heritage villages within UNESCO World Heritage Sites are often associated with natural, cultural and social characteristics of the urban and sub-urban fabric of the previous era. Kampung Morten, Melaka and Ogimachi Village, Shirakawa-go, Gifu each constitute important historical evidence in and of themselves. The villages have existed since the 11th century and each has a strong sense of community. Their traditional social systems and lifestyle customs have sustained the traditional houses and their associated historic environments. The integrity of the nominated areas in both villages is related to the presence of all the elements necessary to express their outstanding example of type of building, architectural or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates their significant stages in human history. The villages have retained their authenticity; listed monuments and sites have been restored with appropriate treatments regarding design, materials, methodologies, techniques and workmanship, in accordance with conservation guidelines and principles. Thus, this paper seeks to understand and identify the characteristics of these historical villages by focusing on the use of traditional materials and techniques, as well as their viewpoints of setting, function, and UNESCO management systems.Keywords: Heritage village, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Kampung Morten, Ogimachi Village

In the Udmurt diaspora of Northern Bashkortostan, the Udmurt traditional religion is very much alive; it is part of the villagers’ everyday life. Rituals are regularly held both at the village level and at a wider community, composed of several villages, and they involve the whole population. This article focuses on the key character of Udmurt ritual: the sacrificial priest, called vös’as’, and attempts to sketch a pattern of function performing and transmission, taking into account the lightly different practice in two local groups of villages. Further on it reflects on its historical perspective, in a Finno-Ugric context in which often practice of ethnic religions is seen and/or used as a marker for ethnicity.

Abstract:
Previously, several toponymy studies have already been conducted both in the Nusa (Island) Ambon as well as in the City of Ambon. However, previous studies have not used the historical-archaeological approach. The use of this approach could ease the researchers to reveal the cross-cultural meeting in a specific locus. Taking the Island of Ambon as a locus, the researchers aim to find the origin of village names and the cultural intersection in Leihitu and Leitimor Peninsula. There were three steps conducted to collect and analyse data using historical-archaeological approach. Firstly, the researchers identified and took a tabulation of the village names, mentioned by the Hikayat Tanah Hitu (The Epic of Hitu Land) and three ancient maps. Secondly, the researchers identified various archaeological remains located in the scattered villages. Finally, the researchers analysed the origin of village names by searching the word-meanings, finding the present locations, and describing the role of the contemporary cultures (Islamic and Colonial period) in the past. The researchers found 12 villages with 22 archaeological remains. All related communities have the archaeological remains which could explain the local dynamics, but there are merely ten villages which name meanings could be identified.

Abstract:
The life skills values prevalent among the peasants’ society in the past can be integrated into the content of life skills subject in the historical learning given to students. The expansion of plant products export in the era of Dutch Colonial was significant in the emergence of some changes in the socio-economic life of the peasant and villagers in Java. They were further immersed into the flow of commercialism. The issue in this article is how the response of the farmers to those changes. As an object of observation, this article took the object of study of village areas in Afedeeling Purwerodjo in the beginning of the twentieth century. The methodology used in this article was historical method involving the processes of heuristic, critiques of resources, interpretation, and historiography.The theoretical framework used in this article was dialectics between the assumption that the change of the socio-economic life in the villages into commercialism was a prolong nightmare for the villagers and the assumption that the changed socio-economic life of the villages into commercialism brought new economic opportunities for the villagers. The conclusion was commercialism resulted in rationality and prosperity for the farmers. The peasants would spend their time and energy more efficiently to exploit the new opportunities given. The rational considerations were more determining than the social motivation in terms of decision making. The peasants had the life skills to create beneficial alternative economic resources to support their lives in the middle of a greater flow of foreign plantation commercialism.

Indigenous villages in Colonial Sergipe: subsidies for the investigation of Historical Archaeology it is a master dissertation, based on historical documents and in literature. It synthesizes the knowledge produced on the villages indigenous of Sergipe, founded among the centuries 17 and 19. Taking as parameters theories and methodologies used by the Historical Archaeology, it recovers information and it formulates inquiries with the purpose of they be good as subsidies for future archaeological excavations in the sites of the old villages. They are outstanding aspects as its functions in the colonial society, its economy, the social and religious life, among others. Quando abordamos o conceito da reabilitação reversível é importante salientar onde e porque estamos realmente a intervir. O objectivo deste trabalho passa por compreender a reversibilidade, associada à polivalência e sobretudo, à adaptabilidade, como meio de reabilitação do património arquitectónico. Reabilitar de forma reversível é assumir que projectamos de acordo com a mutação das necessidades actuais, partindo do princípio que não existem soluções de arquitectura – reabilitação – que resolvam completamente as questões da mesma e, por conseguinte, quando o conceito aplicado deixa de representar uma solução viável, esta pode ser reversível e dar lugar a um novo objectivo. Inserido no contexto das Aldeias Históricas, que aparece imediatamente associado ao património e à sua reabilitação, este trabalho pretende explorar os princípios da reversibilidade na arquitectura. A intervenção de projecto propõe este conceito na adaptação do Castelo de Alfaiates a novos usos do espaço, dotando-o de uma versatilidade, capaz de fazer perdurar as suas vivências e contrariar a sua actual obsolescência.
ABSTRACT: When we approach the concept of reversible rehabilitation it is important to enhance where and why we are really intervening. The purpose of this essay goes by understanding reversibility, related to polyvalence and mainly to adaptability, as a way to conceive the rehabilitation of the architectonic heritage. To rehabilitate in a reversible way, is assuming that we project according to the mutation of the current needs, assuming that there aren’t any architectural solutions- such as rehabilitation – that can fully address the issues in different contexts, especially, when the applied concept ceases to represent a viable solution, so it can be reversible and opening fulfillment horizons towards a diverse and different goal. Inserted in the context of the historical villages, which appears immediately associated with the patrimony and its rehabilitation, this essay intends to exploit the principles of reversibility in architecture. The project intervention proposes this concept in the adaptation of the “Castelo de Alfaiates” to new uses of the space by giving it versatility, capable of making it endure its experiences and contradicting its current obsolescence.

This dissertation studies historical experiments and their impact on contemporaneous economic development and attitudes. The first chapters explore different aspects of the big-push policies known as the ujamaa in Tanzania. The third chapter focuses on the ethnic deportations that were carried out under Stalin's orders during WWII. Chapter 1 studies the long-term impact of having been designated as developmental during the time of the ujamaa on local economic development, as proxied by night light luminosity. Chapter 2 examines the effect of ethnic diversity on inter-ethnic trust, exploiting the ujamaa-induced exposure of groups as part of the policy's villagization program. Chapter 3 studies cultural diffusion using an episode in history in which close co-existence of different cultural groups was exogeneously imposed in a real-word setting without constraints on the interaction between them: Stalin's ethnic deportations during WWII

Abstract:
This dissertation deals with the long-term dynamics and fluctuations of settlements on Gotland for the period from AD 200 up until early modern times. The settlement structure on Gotland is most often described as very stable and consisting of solitary farms, established in the Iron Age. A contrasting view is presented by analyses of a vast source material from different periods. The source material consists of both physical remains, noted in the Swedish national Archaeological Sites Information System, FMIS and large scale historical maps, as well as other written sources. For the first studied period, the locations of some 2 000 houses are known, since they were constructed with sturdy stone walls and are thus preserved. The source material for the following periods is scarcer, but some hundred Viking Age sites are identified, mainly by the find places of silver hoards. By retrogressive analyses of historical maps, from the decades around the year 1700, and other written sources, later periods are analysed. All available data are gathered in geodatabases, which enables both generalised and detailed spatial and statistical analyses. The results of the analyses show a more varied picture, with great fluctuations in the number of farms; the existence of villages is also clearly indicated in a large part of the settlements. The villages are centred on kinship and the lack of strong royal power or landed gentry meant they were not fixed in cadastres, as fiscal units, as villages were on the Swedish mainland. Two peaks, followed by major dips, were identified in the number of settlements and thus in the population. The first peak occurred during the late Roman Iron Age/Migration period, which was followed by a reduction in the Vendel period of possibly up to 30-50%. After this, a recovery started in the Viking Age, which culminated during the heydays of Gotland in the High Middle Ages, with population numbers most probably not surpassed until late in history. This upward trend was broken by the diminishing trade of Gotland, the Medieval agrarian crisis, The Danish invasion and later events. All this resulted in a decline, probably as great as after the Migration period.

Esta investigação pretendeu contribuir para clarificar o papel do turismo no desenvolvimento de um território eminentemente rural, as Aldeias Históricas de Portugal de Trancoso e Marialva e, analisar e compreender qual o contributo da implementação de circuitos turísticos no processo de desenvolvimento local. O presente estudo desenvolveu-se em três fases. Na primeira, para além da pesquisa e revisão bibliográfica, procedeu-se à teorização conceituada das determinantes e envolventes, políticas de desenvolvimento, desenvolvimento local, sistema e turismo. Numa segunda fase procurou-se ter a perspectiva dos actores envolvidos, do lado da oferta (agentes públicos e privados) e do lado da procura (turistas). Finalmente, elaborou-se um conjunto de propostas de intervenção para o desenvolvimento turístico das Aldeias Históricas de Portugal de Trancoso e Marialva. Assim, este trabalho pretendeu demonstrar que o destino turístico das Aldeias Históricas obtém vantagens competitivas fruto da implementação de circuitos turísticos que potenciem os recursos endógenos. __ ABSTRACT: This research project intended to clarify the role of tourism in the historie villages of Portugal in Trancoso and Marialva development, a territory of rural nature, the analyze and understand what contribution the implementation of tour operators in the local development process. This study has developed in three phases. At first, besides the research and the bibliographical review, we proceeded with the theorization of concepts such as the environment, policy development, local development and tourism system. ln a second phase sought to have the perspective of the actors involved, from the supply side (public and private) and on the demand side (tourists). Finally, we elaborated a set of intervention proposals for tourism development of the historie villages of Portugal in Trancoso and Marialva. This work aims to demonstrate that the tourist destination of Historical Villages gets competitive advantages result from the implementation of tours that enhance endogenous resources.

AbstractThis chapter argues that the historical geographies of Toronto’s Church and Wellesley Street district and Sydney’s Oxford Street gay villages are important in understanding ongoing contemporary transformations in both locations. LGBT and queer communities as well as mainstream interests argue that these gay villages are in some form of “decline” for various social, political, and economic reasons. Given their similar histories and geographies, our analysis considers how these historical geographies have both enabled and constrained how the respective gay villages respond to these challenges, opening up and closing down particular possibilities for alternative (and relational) geographies. While there are a number of ways to consider these historical geographies, we focus on three factors for analysis: post-World War II planning policies, the emergence of “city of neighborhoods” discourses, and the positioning of gay villages within neoliberal processes of commodification and consumerism. We conclude that these distinctive historical geographies offer a cogent set of understandings by providing suggestive explanations for how Toronto’s and Sydney’s gendered and sexual landscapes are being reorganized in distinctive ways, and offer some wider implications for urban planning and policy.

Abstract:
Part I of the book focusses on three villages in the Municipality of Përmet: Bënjë, Kosinë and Leusë. Bënjë, which lies entirely within the "Bredhi i Hotovës - Dangëlli" National Park, has undergone anthropization processes since prehistoric times. Due to its landscape and architectural value, it was recognised in 2016 as a “historical centre” and as such has come under the protection of the National Institute for the Cultural Heritage. There is little information concerning the history of Kosinë. The inhabitants show a strong connection with the Byzantine Church of the Dormition of Mary, but regrettably, it was impossible to go back to the origins of the current settlement. The village of Leusë, instead, existed before 1812, the year in which the Church of the Dormition of Mary was built. Today, the image of the village is a consequence of the partial reconstruction occured after the severe damage suffered during World War II. In the first chapters, the importance of the intangible heritage is stressed. Përmet’s food heritage is well-known on a national scale for its typical products (spirits, fruit preserves, dairy, meat, honey and bakery products), which result from the favourable climatic conditions and the rich biodiversity of the area. The tradition of the Tosk iso-polyphony, the hospitality of Përmet inhabitants and their historical devotion to religion, knowledge and study emerge with great strength together with the craftsmanship traditions and the exceptional skills of the itinerant and seasonal master builders. In the following chapters, the multiple aspects of the tangible heritage are analysed. The landscape in Përmet includes a vast variety of habitats, which have preserved to a large extent their original qualities. It is deeply marked by the Vjosa River and other several minor watercourses that crisscross the territory. A special attention is given to the historical built heritage of the villages, and specifically to three architectural assets (all listed as category I Cultural Monuments): the Katiu Bridge in Bënjë (an Ottoman bridge of the 18th century), the Church of the Dormition of Mary in Leusë (a Post-Byzantine building of the 19th century), and the Church of the Dormition of Mary in Kosinë (a Byzantine building of the end of the 12th century). For each of the aforementioned issues, the theoretical and historical analysis are closely bound to an evaluation of those features of the cultural heritage that could be enhanced to guarantee a sustainable tourism development of the area. Each chapter ends with a consistent set of specific intervention strategies. They are substantive tools for action aimed at public and private local actors.

Abstract:
Historic villages are included in the category of cultural heritage to be safeguarded and preserved. Accidental events, such as earthquakes, represent a threat to their vulnerability. Usually, the analyses of damaged buildings, which are part of these villages, are then carried out singularly, not fostering instead the constitution of a mapping at the urban scale that allows a more complete knowledge of the state of damage and risk of adjacent buildings and of the entire area. An information system such as 3D GIS is a suitable solution for this purpose. The aim of this research is to develop a SMART management system for preservation activities of historical villages through the management of heterogeneous types of data, from the survey to the technical documentation. The workflow is structured as follows: (i) Data acquisition: the survey of a small village was carried out by combining geomatic techniques necessary to produce a complete point cloud; (ii) 3D modeling: data extrapolation from the post-processed point cloud and subsequently generation of a GIS based on 3D model thanks to the creation of DTM and DSM of the area of interest; (iii) Knowledge modeling: a geospatial information model is necessary to put in order and together all the information collected for the whole village and for each building composing it; (iv) SMART management modeling: improvement of the information management system that guarantees the possibility to enrich and update data at any time. This research paves the way to develop a web platform where GIS data would be imported for a digital twin approach.

The paper deals with seasonal work and local migrations of Vologda uyezd peasants after the abolition of serfdom in Russia. It has been found that traditional explanation which claims agricultural crisis as main reason of peasants leaving their villages for seasonal work was not confirmed by the information from local documents. The research is based on GIS displaying demographic change and migration activities in every village of Vologda uyezd in 1859–1914.

This negletc state produces a serious problem related to a wider phenomenon of abandonment of entire portions of italian territories. Realities that differ form the city because of their morphology: Does urban shape represent an urban limit? or is it an alternative testimony to the city? Research purpose is to understand how relationship, between these cases and the territory, works; in particular during the absence of the main component: the human one. The case study Santo Stefano di Sessanio, an ancient village in the center of Italy, inhabited until 90's, shows how the examination of urban shape represents the potentiality of his own revitalization. By relating his historical identity to the scattered hotel projectual approach, it contributes to combine conservation, valorization and sustainability of the existing building fabric, in order to claim the authenticity of these villages declaring their own autonomy and dimension to major urban centers polarization. In this example transformation is meant as conscious project that grow up from the built reality not from the project itself, transformation as knowledge of urban facts, tool to approach to the structure of this reality. The land acquisition and real estate development have caused rapid disappearance and decline of a large number of traditional villages, resulting in "urban villages" in China. They seem chaotic, but contain rich and colorful social life. The living environment is really harsh, but people always maintain close relationship with each other. They are different from neither the modern urban nor traditional villages, but they have their own unique vitality. Such heterogeneous space is always a symbol of historical change and cultural collision which, according to the French philosopher Michel Foucault, can be called Heterotopias. In order to study this heterotopic phenomenon, the triangular area of Guandongdian district in Beijing has been chosen as the object of this case study. With the in-depth investigation of interviews, observation, statistics and sketches, this paper is trying to interpret the characteristics of the heterotopic state of the urban village from three aspects of social form, urban morphology and architectural feature. Currently, there is a rapid growth of demand for cultural tourism and there is a growing trend of cultural interest as a tourism product in the world. Indonesia has a lot of cultural and historical heritage with a multicultural population and serves as an integral part of the world's cultural heritage. In order to have an impact on the economy, this cultural heritage must be managed properly. Therefore there needs to be a study on the cultural heritage tourism model by balancing the interests between the tourism industry and heritage preservation as the main agenda to get a mutually sustainable relationship in cultural heritage tourism. The objectives in research are to; 1) knowing the potential of the Maghilewa traditional village as a cultural tourism destination, 2) knowing the feasibility of the traditional village as a cultural heritage destination, 3) formulating the steps that will be taken to prepare the traditional village as a cultural heritage destination. This research is a qualitative descriptive study to get an overview of the potential and feasibility of cultural tourism villages and the steps to make traditional villages into cultural tourism destinations. The results showed that the traditional village of Maghilewa was feasible to be developed into a cultural heritage destination. In developing the traditional village of Maghilewa, it is feasible as a cultural heritage destination, it requires a lot of support from the community, local government, and academics. The steps that must be taken are to build synergy between stakeholders in order to build the capacity of the Maghilewa Traditional Village community and encourage the Regional Government to implement comprehensive policies in participatory tourism development by prioritizing the conservation of local culture.
