Abstract:
Several of the articles in this volume criticize the use of DW-NOMINATE in historical work in American politics and suggest alternative approaches to the use of roll call voting data. While many of criticisms are certainly valid, their practical implications are often overstated. Moreover, the suggested alternatives are either impractical for most historically oriented scholars and or do not adequately address the underlying problems. Almost all of the criticisms can be addressed by correct application of DW-NOMINATE results or those of other closely related measures.

The anatomy of the ampullary termination of the bile and pancreatic ducts is complex; appropriate terminology for this area is confusing and inaccurate. We examine the terms “ampulla of Vater” and “papilla of Vater” for anatomical and historical correctness. The term “ampulla” refers to a dilated part of a duct or other channel. Thus, this word is topographically correct to describe the dilatation at the confluence of the bile and main pancreatic ducts; historically, however, there is considerable reason to believe that its first description was by Santorini rather than Vater. The eponymous term “papilla of Vater” is also incorrect historically. The use of eponyms is firmly entrenched in the medical literature, but some are so problematic that they should be discarded. The eponymous terms for both the ampulla and the papilla should be replaced with the terms “hepatopancreatic ampulla” (or “biliaropancreatic ampulla”) and “major [or “greater”] duodenal papilla,” respectively.

Abstract:
Multimedia archives face the problem of obsolescing and degrading analogue media (e.g., speech and music recordings and video art). In response, researchers in the field have recently begun studying ad hoc tools for the preservation and access of historical analogue documents. This paper investigates the active preservation process of audio tape recordings, specifically focusing on possible means for compensating equalization errors introduced in the digitization process. If the accuracy of corrective equalization filters is validated, an archivist or musicologist would be able to experience the audio as a historically authentic document such that their listening experience would not require the recovery of the original analogue audio document or the redigitization of the audio. Thus, we conducted a MUSHRA-inspired perception test (n = 14) containing 6 excerpts of electronic music (3 stimuli recorded NAB and 3 recorded CCIR). Participants listened to 6 different equalization filters for each stimulus and rated them in terms of similarity. Filters included a correctly digitized “Reference,” an intentionally incorrect “Foil” filter, and a subsequent digital correction of the Foil filter that was produced with a MATLAB script. When stimuli were collapsed according to their filter type (NAB or CCIR), no significant differences were observed between the Reference and MATLAB correction filters. As such, the digital correction appears to be a promising method for compensation of equalization errors although future study is recommended, specifically containing an increased sample size and additional correction filters for comparison.

Aurivillius’s work entitled “Neue oder wenig bekannte ColeopteraLongicornia” was published in parts over a period of over four decades. There were two page numbers on most pages of these publications, one ordered by Aurivillius, the other by the journal. Historically, different authors have used different page numbers, and sometimes different years for these publications, which has caused chaos in the citations. Herein, accurate dates of publications for this work, and correct page numbers that should be used are provided and discussed.

AbstractWhile scholars have long acknowledged the limitations of Herodotus’ Histories as a historical source, Herodotus’ topography of the Persian Wars is still usually seen as historically reliable information. This article, by contrast, aims to show that memory studies offers an attractive means to understand this layer of information, as the alleged locations of events do not, in many cases, necessarily reflect the historical situation. Instead, these places may, for various reasons, have been designated as such in local traditions in the ca. 50 years between the wars and Herodotus’ research. As a case in point, this article discusses the topography of Herodotus’ story of the Persian shipwreck along the coast of Thessaly before the Battle of Artemision in 480 BC (Hdt. 7.183, 7.188, 7.191–92). It argues that the attitude among scholars automatically to regard the locations in this account as historically correct has created various problems. In doing so, it identifies the elusive place of Sepias with the coast near the town of Veneto where a remarkable cluster of sea caves (the so-called ‘Ovens’) plausibly formed an ‘anchor’ for the myth of the abduction of Thetis by Peleus, as well as for the Persian shipwreck.

Whiteness—distinct from individuals who identify as white—is a social construction; and social constructions, by definition, can be disassembled. Whiteness is also wholly constituted by and inseparable from white supremacy, and thus exists purely as racial injustice. These are historical facts. Consequently, racial justice demands that whiteness be dismantled and abolished. Social work, as a profession committed to racial justice, is directly implicated in this imperative. Yet, due to misunderstanding and unawareness, the above facts register with most social workers as exaggerated claims, baseless untruths, or ideological propaganda. Social work requires a historically accountable critical whiteness curriculum in order to correct this pervasive misunderstanding and to facilitate informed participation in the pursuit of racial justice in a way that accurately apprehends the nature of whiteness. This curriculum, introduced here, explores the history and invention of whiteness in global, U.S., and social work contexts; examines the integral role of education in deploying and maintaining whiteness; and considers reconstruction and abolition as alternative modes of responding to whiteness as a social problem. The curriculum ultimately shows abolition to be the only historically and theoretically consistent response to whiteness, leading to a call for abolition as praxis and for further curricular development.

A dissertação tem como finalidade provar a existência concomitante de relatos que se pautam pela causalidade histórica e pela causalidade providencialista na cronística da primeira metade do século XVI, tomando como objecto de análise a obra de Gaspar Correia, que se reparte entre a cronística régia, com a Crónica de D. Manuel e de D. João III, e a cronística da Expansão, com as Lendas da Índia. Tomamos como ponto de partida o facto de a cronística portuguesa ter assumido um papel fundamental na forma como perpetuou os feitos da Cristandade, o papel centralizador da figura régia na busca de novas formas de comércio, de domínio e de evangelização dos povos. Revelamos, assim, Gaspar Correia como um dos cronistas que narrou os feitos dos portugueses no Oriente, guiando-se por um discurso em que a veracidade histórica se encontra precisamente na narração do que viu, ouviu e experienciou. Definimos, para este trabalho, três capítulos que correspondem, respectivamente, ao Homem, à Obra e aos Governadores. No primeiro, Gaspar Correia: um perfil biográfico, procuramos apresentar a problemática em torno do seu nome, do seu percurso de vida no reino e no Oriente. No segundo, Gaspar Correia: Considerações em torno da sua obra, situamos a sua obra no contexto da cronística portuguesa, particularizando as diferenças estruturais e metodológicas entre a sua crónica régia e a da Expansão e confrontando os textos prologais dos seus pares – Fernão Lopes de Castanheda, João de Barros e Damião de Góis. No terceiro, Lopo Soares de Albergaria e Diogo Lopes de Sequeira na obra de Gaspar Correia, centramos o nosso estudo nestes dois governos e como a causalidade histórica e a causalidade providencial se misturam nos relatos das suas acções, determinando o seu peso na narração das vivências do espaço oriental. Deste modo, propomos uma análise da cronística de Gaspar Correia, que nos permite perceber melhor que causalidade(s) está(ão) presentes na construção textual deste tipo de narrativas.
The purpose of this thesis is to prove the existence of concomitant narratives showing historical and providential circumstances in the chronicles of the first half of the 16th century, after an analysis of the work of Gaspar Correia from the Royal chronicles with Crónica de D. Manuel e de D. João III and the chronicles of Expansion with Lendas da Índia. The starting point was the fact that the Portuguese chronicles have always assumed a fundamental role in the way they perpetuated the deeds of Christianity, the centralizing role of the king in his search for new forms of commerce, of mastership and evangelization of other peoples. Gaspar Correia is presented as one of the chronicle writers who narrated the deeds of the Portuguese people in the East, using a speech in which the historical veracity is precisely in the narration of what he saw, listened to and experienced. Three chapters of this work are to mention and they respectively refer to the Man, his Work and the Governors. In the first one, Gaspar Correia: a biographical profile, we intend to present questions related to his name, his life in kingdom and in the East. In the second one, Gaspar Correia: considerations about his work, his work is seen in the context of Portuguese chronicles. The structural and methodological differences between his royal chronicles and the Expansion ones are specified and compared with the prologues of his peers – Fernão Lopes de Castanheda, João de Barros e Damião de Góis. In the third one, Lopes Soares de Albergaria e Diogo Lopes de Sequeira na obra de Gaspar Correia, our study is centered on these two governments and in the way historical circumstances and providential circumstances mingle in reports of their actions and take a fundamental role in the narration of Eastern ways of life. This way an analysis of the chronicles of Gaspar Correia is suggested in order to better understand of the circumstance(s) in the textual conception of this type of narratives.
La dissertation a comme but prouver l’existence simultanée de récits qui se régissent par la causalité historique et par la causalité providentielle dans les chroniques de la première moitié du XVIe siècle, en ayant comme sujet d’analyse l’oeuvre de Gaspar Correia, qui se partage entre la chronique royale, avec la Crónica de D. Manuel e de D. João III et la chronique de l’Expansion avec les Lendas da Índia. Comme point de départ il y a le fait de la chronique portugaise avoir assumée un rôle centralisateur de l’image royale à la recherche de nouvelles façons de commerce, de domination et d’évangélisation des peuples. On présente de cette façon, Gaspar Correia comme un des chroniqueurs qui a raconté les faits des portugais dans l’Orient, à travers un discours où la véracité historique se trouve justement dans la narration de ce qu’il a vu, écouté et vécu. On a décidé d’écrire trois chapitres qui correspondent, respectivement à l’Homme, à l’OEuvre et aux Gouverneurs. Le premier, Gaspar Correia : un profil biographique, on essaye de présenter la problématique autour de son nom, de son parcours de vie au royaume et à l’Orient. Le second, Gaspar Correia : des considérations autour de son oeuvre dans le contexte de la chronique portugaise, en particulier les différences structurales et méthodologiques entre sa chronique royale et celle de l’Expansion en confrontant les textes préliminaires de ses pairs - Fernão Lopes de Castanheda, João de Barros e Damião de Góis. Le troisième, Lopo Soares de Albergaria et Diogo Lopes de Sequeira dans l’oeuvre de Gaspar Correia, on centre notre étude sur ces deux gouvernements et comme la causalité providentielle se mélangent dans les récits de leurs actions, en déterminant leur importance dans la narration des existences vécues dans l’espace orientale. O presente trabalho nasceu da ideia de reconstituir, através de uma animação multimédia, a cidade de Tavira na época medieval, mais precisamente durante a primeira metade do século XIII, de acordo com a informação expressa na Crónica da Conquista do Algarve, entre outras fontes. Pretendeu-se perceber como, quando e qual o contexto em que se revelou a campanha devastadora de D. Paio Peres Correia, comendador da Ordem de Santiago, contra as forças muçulmanas que dominavam esta região. Naturalmente, esta interpretação pessoal está centrada na interação de várias áreas disciplinares, conjugando duas abordagens complementares, com o objetivo de construir um protótipo multimédia. A primeira parte inicia com uma narração histórica, relevando-se os aspetos sociais, tensões políticas, interesses económicos, eclesiásticos, conflitos entre Portugal e Castela e seus protagonistas na disputa pelo território algarvio. A segunda parte da dissertação apresenta um vídeo elaborado a partir de uma plataforma de mundos virtuais, congregando a utilização de softwares como o Adobe Photoshop (edição de imagem), Sony Vegas (edição de vídeo) e o Sketchup (criação de maquetes), para poder apresentar uma visualização imagética do texto e recriar o coração da vila medieval de Tavira: o castelo, a igreja de Santa Maria e a ponte romana. Deste modo, mostra-se gradualmente a forma como todos estes elementos se interligam entre si, a partir da implantação espácio-temporal, revelando quais as razões pelas quais Tavira foi o mais importante centro urbano do Algarve naquele tempo.
This project arises from an idea to recreate, through the development of multimedia support, the city of Tavira in a medieval context, particularly in the first half of the thirteenth century, according to events of the Chronicle of the Conquest of the Algarve, as well as other sources. We tried to understand how, when and in which context took place the devastating campaign of D. Paio Peres Correia, Grand-Master of the military Order of Santiago, against the Muslim forces that dominated this region. Naturally, the purpose of my personal interpretation was the interaction of various disciplinary areas, combining two complementary approaches in the construction of a multimedia prototype. The former concerns the historical narrative with focus on the social, political tensions, economic, ecclesiastical, conflicts between Portugal and Castile and their protagonists in the dispute of the Algarve territory. The latter presents a video made from a platform gathering the virtual worlds of software like Adobe Photoshop (image editing), Sony Vegas (video editing) and Sketchup (creating mockups) in order to be able to display the text imagery and recreate the heart of the medieval town of Tavira: the castle, the Church of Saint Mary and the roman bridge. Thus, we will gradually show how these elements are related intra-temporal and spatial manner and with other villages near Tavira which was considered the main center of Algarve at that time.

Abstract Recent classical studies on hope have sought to correct a long-standing overemphasis on negative aspects of hope in antiquity, setting up possible correlations with early Christian and New Testament studies. These studies, however, have focused more on the contemporary relevance of hope and the particular emphases of certain texts, without taking into account classical advances. This chapter proposes a more integrative model to make up for this lack. The chapter consists of three elements: a “bottom-up” approach, comprehensive textual analysis, and consideration of possible ancient frames. The aim is to facilitate understandings and nuances of hope. This model is then applied to the letter of 1 Thessalonians, arguably the earliest preserved Christian text. The results show to what extent the letter shares other developing conceptions and contexts related to hope, and how it specifically differs from them, with concluding observations for further study.

AbstractA very large number of historical manuscript collections are available in image formats and require extensive manual processing in order to search through them. So, we propose and build a search engine for automatically storing, indexing and efficiently searching the manuscript images. Firstly, a handwritten text recognition technique is used to convert the images into textual representations. In the next steps, we apply the named entity recognition and historical knowledge graph to build a semantic search model, which can understand the user’s intent in the query and the contextual meaning of concepts in documents, to return correctly the transcriptions and their corresponding images for users.

AbstractAs some scholars have noted, the technical principles that modern creative writing workshops identify as “the craft of fiction” owe a great deal to Henry James and the prefaces to the New York edition of his novels, later published in a single volume as The Art of the Novel. However, James, far from setting out to help aspiring writers to develop their technical knowledge, was in fact fairly hostile to the very idea of craft, famously declaring that he “cannot imagine composition existing in a series of blocks.” The prefaces were instead intended to provide a sort of Cliff’s Notes to his own work, naming the tricks of his trade for the edification of his most dedicated readers, and it was these readers, most notably including Percy Lubbock, Joseph Warren Beach, and Caroline Gordon, who adapted James’s principles in some of the first literary handbooks used in the creative writing classroom. Though Lubbock, Beach, and Gordon borrowed significantly from James, they balanced his emphasis on aesthetics with the more accessible and egalitarian approach of earlier authors of fiction-writing handbooks, including the work of Walter Besant. This essay argues that a scholarly examination of the historical development of the discourse of the craft of writing serves not only to correct an over-emphasis on James’s influence, but also to address the equally erroneous assumption that principles of technique are eternal and universal, and thus exist apart from subject position and historical contingency.

AbstractAround 1800, merchants, scientists and adventurers travelled to Latin America with different purposes. Their multifaceted interests in a world region, experiencing a threshold of independence from Spanish colonial rule, inspired new historical and political works about the continent’s recent past. The Enlightenment provided not only the philosophical armamentarium against corruption, but it also paved the way to a new expression of sentiments and to the loss of fear when addressing injustice. Some examples of these are Hipólito Villaroel’s list of grievances and Humboldt’s Political essay. These two authors provide some thoughts on the political landscape of New Spain (now Mexico), while the two Swiss physicians Rengger and Longchamp describe the ruthless and odd dictator Francia of independent Paraguay as a champion of anti-corruption. Finally, Argentine dictator Rosas—and his robberies as described by Rivera Indarte, Sarmiento and other anonymous authors—represent the embodiment of corruption through pure larceny, for whose crimes the Spanish colonial past apparently no longer served as a comparison.

The parametric ordinary least square (OLS) regression approach was used to detect trends in the time series of climate change and extreme indices. The results show an increase in mean annual temperature at the rate of 0.02 °C/year and a variability in rainfall at the catchment, under RCP 4.5 scenario. The warmest day and warmest night were projected to increase by 0.8 °C and 0.3 °C, respectively, in the future relative to the historical period. The intensity (e.g., R99p) and frequency (e.g., CDD) of extreme rainfall indices were projected to increase by 29 mm and 26 days, respectively, in the future. This is an indication of the vulnerability of the catchment to the risk of climate disasters (e.g., floods and drought). Adaptation strategies such as early warning systems, availability of climate information, and flood control measures are recommended to reduce the vulnerability of the people to the risk of the projected impact of climate extreme in the future.

Abstract:
This paper reexamines the central thesis of Gadamer’s theory of interpretation that objectivity is not a suitable ideal for understanding a text, historical event or cultural phenomenon because there exists no one correct interpretation of such phenomena. Because Gadamer fails to make clear the grounds for this claim, I consider three possible arguments. The first, predominant in the secondary literature, is built on the premise that we cannot surpass our historically situated prejudgments. I reject this argument as insufficient. I also reject a second argument concerning the heuristics of understanding. I then articulate a third argument that the object of understanding changes according to the conditions under which it is grasped. I appeal to the notion of relational properties to make sense of this claim and to defend it against two objections: (i) that it conflates meaning and significance; and (ii) that it is saddled with an indefensible relativism.

Abstract The heat balance of gas turbine (GT) combustors is used for determining the average Combustor Exit Temperature (CET). It is important for designing the hot parts in this area. Sensor measurements of the CET are nearly impossible due to its high level up to above 1700°C. Therefore it is typically evaluated based on a 1-D cycle calculation, in which the combustor receives compressed air and fuel and it discharges the hot combustion gas at the temperature CET. In the classic approach the fuel heat received in the combustor is evaluated based on the lower heating value (LHV) of the fuel and after the complete combustion the mixture of excess air and combustion products leaves the combustor at the temperature CET, which is calculated based on its specific enthalpy function. So far so simple but this is tricky. The reaction energy is not the LHV but the higher heating value HHV, which includes additionally the discharged energy for condensing the combustion water at ambient temperature. The total heat comes into the flue-gas in the combustor, which is designed for a combustion efficiency of typically 99%+. There is no significant downstream reaction known, which could add the missing difference of HHV-LHV. In GT based power stations condensation is mostly avoided by sufficiently high stack temperature. For methane as a fuel the HHV is around 11% higher than the LHV. Thus the CET derived with the LHV for a given fuel mass flow rate may be underestimated. The method comparison shown below indicates values around 10K. This is a “grey” issue. The intention of this paper is an attempt to understand this practice both technically and historically. Gas turbine catalogues indicate performance data based on burning pure methane. This may have its historic roots in the fact that methane (only Methane, not higher hydrocarbons) burns with oxygen without a change of the specific volume. This simplified the cycle calculation in the sense that combustion could be modelled by adding the LHV to air and methane (assuming an equal temperature) and by calculating the expansion of air and methane separately (corresponding to mixed if no chemical reaction due to the high temperature is assumed) but with the same polytropic efficiency. At ambient temperature this fuel-air mixture is still gaseous and therefore the heat balance of the GT matches exactly with the LHV (used before in the combustor heat balance) because there is no condensation issue. Another feature of the air may compensate the CET mistake partly when using the LHV. It is the effect of dissociation. This increases the specific heat and therefore reduces the calculated CET. In the older time the used specific heat function of air did not include the dissociation effect while nowadays it is mostly included assuming chemical equilibrium. In this paper the good match of a cycle calculation considering the HHV and dissociation with published OEM data will be demonstrated. Indeed this method contradicts existing standards and practices and a further discussion considering the evidence shown below is welcome. In its current development state it allows considering any fuel defined only by the HHV and by its composition with hydrogen to carbon ratio by mass. Additionally it also allows considering high fogging with water injection rates up to several mass % of the air inlet flow rate.

Recent industry experience has raised concerns with the NRC regarding the fracture toughness of small partial penetration instrument nozzles. Historically, small-bore instruments have not been evaluated when Pressure-Temperature curves were developed. Typical instrument nozzles have an outside diameter of 3¼ inches or less and a wall thickness of 11/16 inches or less. They were considered to be exempt per ASME XI Appendix G-2223(c), “Fracture toughness analysis to demonstrate protection against non-ductile failure is not required for portions of nozzles and appurtenances having a thickness of 2.5 in. (63 mm) or less, provided the lowest service temperature is not lower than RTNDT plus 60°F (33°C).” Now it appears that the effect of the nozzle discontinuity on the stresses in the beltline region of the shell must be assessed. This paper will show that historical interpretation of the code is correct and a fatigue analysis of the vessel shell adjacent to these instrument nozzles is unnecessary. The industry experience with instrument nozzle leakages is typically related to the quality of manufacturing as suggested by J.H. Gross. Fabrication and inspection range quality relative to FSRF is ke = 10 for poor and ke < 5 for good quality. This approach appears to correlate well with this consideration and industry experience. This paper will also demonstrate the use of fabrication travelers and/or inspection information that can be used to determine an appropriate FSRF to assess the relative health of these and other components.

As high-strength thinner-steel implementation in ship designs increase, dimensional management becomes critical to control construction costs and schedule in ship production. In the US shipbuilding industry, improvements to shipbuilding facilities and processing technology have not kept pace with the rate of change in ship design. Additionally, new designs using thinner steels are subject to legacy weld sizing criteria possibly leading to inappropriately sized welds on lightweight materials. These two factors result in widespread overwelding; causing severe plate deformation in naval vessels during construction and non-value added labor to correct as needed for fit up tolerances. Historically, shear and fatigue strength data has been focused on the larger welds and thicker steel plates typical of the state of the practice when these legacy weld sizing criteria were developed. In order to optimize weld design and production in modern, lightweight naval surface vessels, there is a need to develop more accurate data about the performance of precision fillet welds for thin steels.

The 300 series austenitic stainless steels have been used extensively and successfully in the Citrus Industry for numerous applications. Material cost and corrosion resistance to both citrus products and cleaning solutions for maintaining sanitary conditions has made type 304 and type 316 stainless steels the material of choice for process equipment, tanks, and piping systems. However, corrosion failures have occurred and many have been the subject of forensic investigations to determine the cause and provide recommendations to avoid future, similar problems. Historically, the primary modes of corrosion failure of T304SS and T316SS have been experienced not only in the Citrus Industry but also in the chemical and petrochemical industries. These modes of corrosion include localized corrosion in the form of pitting and crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking. Successful long-term performance is best obtained when (1) the correct alloy is selected for the application; (2) piping and equipment are carefully fabricated and passivated prior to being placed in service; and (3) the process system design and operation minimizes stagnation and solids deposition, especially at elevated temperature. The design of high efficiency modern centrifugal compressor stages with a wide operating range is challenging and demanding. To achieving the best design, numerical tools and test equipments for performance prediction and validation need to be at the state-of-the-art. Test data are also necessary to validate and continuously improve the numerical techniques used for performance prediction during the design phase. This paper presents the experimental and computational analysis of the flow field in a modern high flow, high Mach centrifugal compressor stage at the design point. Phase-resolved flow measurements for total pressure, static pressure and flow angle were carried out at the exit section of the centrifugal impeller. The measurements were performed using a Fast Response Aerodynamic Pressure Probe (FRAPP), traversed from the impeller hub up to the shroud; the key experimental results are presented as two-dimensional distributions as well as hub-to-shroud profiles. A CFD analysis was also carried out using an in-house CFD code to compare the results of the computational models with the FRAPP. In particular two different approaches, which combined accuracy and reasonable computational time, were used for the CFD computations: one is the standard methodology with only the flow-path modeled; the second also includes modeling of the leakage cavities. In fact the correct prediction of the flow profiles at the impeller exit and downstream, at the diffuser exit, is fundamental for the accurate design of the non-rotating downstream parts. Historically, the standard CFD approach has been found to be weak in capturing these profiles, especially close to the hub wall. Instead the CFD model including cavities was able to match to within a good approximation the profiles from the FRAPP probe.

The Pipeline and Hazardous Material Safety Administration (PHSMA) has increased emphasis on records that are “traceable, verifiable, and complete.” Organizing records into a document structure that is traceable, verifiable, and complete can be a daunting task. Through work with operators, Det Norske Veritas (U.S.A.) Inc. (DNV) identified a methodology to efficiently search and organize material property data and records into a structure that is fit for regulatory audit. The methodology consists of four steps: (1) Search/Organize Documentation. (2) Digitally Capture Paper Documents. (3) Determine Document Precedence. (4) Create a Reference-able Listing. The first step reviews all files and records and identifies records that are pertinent to properties verification. The search is conducted at an operator’s office(s) by a team of personnel familiar with pipeline construction and maintenance documentation. Once records have been identified, they are digitally captured (scanned) making them easy to reference. This requires a set of metadata and unique name for each document. The metadata consists of project number, document type (maintenance form, drawing, etc…), pipeline name, and information location. Document precedence is used to identify documents most likely to contain correct material information. Document precedence is determined with operator employees that can identify document(s) that have been historically given high reliability. Finally, a listing tabulates material properties along with the unique document name(s) for the specific records. The listing contains pipe (by segment or joint), fittings (valves, prefabricated elbows, etc…), and other components that may affect Maximum (Allowable) Operating Pressures. Typically the listing uses linear pipeline stationing as the main reference. Implementation of the methodology yields a listing of material properties specifically linked to a digital document database — i.e., a records system that is “traceable, verifiable, and complete.” In addition to material properties, this methodology has also been applied to risk-related information (e.g. cathodic protection, crossings, coating information, etc…). The listing can then be used to identify any information gaps and potentially prioritize them based on reliability.

The frequency response of a pressure transducer is influenced by the natural resonance of the sensor structure, the spatial resolution of the sensor due to its diaphragm size, the sensor packaging, signal conditioning and mounting at the measurement location. The resonance of the sensor and aerodynamically-driven resonances related to the sensor packaging and/or mounting, specifically, can distort dynamic pressure measurements within the range of greatest interest (10Hz–20kHz), typically resulting in erroneous amplification. Historically, correcting for such errors within the frequency response of a pressure transducer or measurement system has been challenging, because such errors are hard to quantify with unknown resonant frequencies and damping factors (quality factors). However, with the ability to fully characterize resonant frequencies that lie within 10Hz–50kHz using a previously demonstrated dynamic pressure characterization methodology, it is possible to apply electrical filtering to substantially extend the flat (0±2dB) frequency response of a transducer before any digital signal conversion. In this work, we present a real-time frequency response compensation scheme that uses electrical filtering to correct for aerodynamically driven packaging or mounting related resonances while at the same time preventing signal distortion caused by the sensor resonances. The compensation extends the useable, flat amplitude bandwidth of the transducer while also correcting the phase response to maintain constant time delay over the extended bandwidth. This real-time frequency response correction scheme can be similarly used to compensate for chip resonances, which can limit the frequency response in applications such as shock and blast testing. A theoretical model of the frequency response correction methodology is presented. We additionally present temperature dependent experimental results that compare the frequency response with and without the correction scheme. These results demonstrate that the usable bandwidth of pressure transducers can be increased when real time, analog frequency response correction is applied. This work shows that if the frequency response of a transducer is well characterized, advanced signal conditioning can be implemented to substantially extend the flat bandwidth of the transducer without changes to the sensor, packaging or mounting.

The determination of Design Ground Motion time history (or response spectra) is the primary and critical step to derive correct Seismic Design Inputs for a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) design. Historically Design Ground Motion (design SSE input) for a NPP was determined by early version procedure provided in RG 1.60. It was based on a theory of deterministic approach; the resulting ground motion is given in acceleration response spectra located at free surface of a site. As a transition point, 1997 was the year where new procedure was developed and recommended in RG 1.165 based on the new theory of SSE ground motion probabilistic approach. RG 1.165 was authorized for application on all new NPPs’ design after 1997. With the advancing of PSHA approach, RG 1.165 was withdrawn and replaced with new RG 1.208 in 2008. RG 1.208 established an effective way through the similar probabilistic approach used in RG 1.165 by improving PSHA method. Both RG1.165 results and RG 1.208 results are focused on addressing site-specific design, its Ground Motion Response Spectra (GMRS) and Ground Motion Time History (converted from GMRS) are used as design inputs to specific Nuclear Island (NI) seismic design. To accomplish a Standard Design Certification, the RG 1.60 DRS is used to develop the Certified Seismic Design Response Spectra (CSDRS) by modifying control points on original RG 1.60 curves to broaden the spectra in higher frequency range. In reality, CSDRS serves as a good approach to define DRS and Design Ground Motion Time History for standard design of new NPPs in current timeframe, hence envelop the site-specific GMRS given in RG 1.208. In this paper, through the comparison of above US NRC regulatory requirements and Chinese regulatory requirements, gives recommendations on the determination of Design Ground Motion Response Spectra (or Time History), which serves as the basis for deriving seismic design inputs at required specific location (e.g. the bottom of NI foundation level) for potential “GEN III & Plus” plants in China.

This paper presents a method of calculating the meter factor (MF) to correct systematic errors and improve the pipeline operation accuracy. It includes the evaluation of the MF uncertainty and also the uncertainty of the ultrasonic-meter results corrected by a MF and the pressure and temperature correction factor. The procedure presented is based on the historical reports from the SCADA system. The results shown include a calibration of an ultrasonic meter using a dynamic measurement system as reference. The use of one register each minute was sufficient for the MF calculation for the ultrasonic meter flowrate output. It is recommended to use at least 12 typical batches.

Abstract Historically, only total metal thickness measurement was possible using frequency domain electromagnetic (EM) logging tools. With advances in technology, it is critical to develop a frequency domain alternative answer using a multi-frequency array EM pipe inspection tool to accurately estimate the individual wall thicknesses of as many as five concentric pipes. Results from yard testing in a special design mockup, as well as field logs, are demonstrated as part of the technology assessment process. The new multi-frequency array EM tool uses the eddy current principle and includes two transmitters and eight receivers. It operates in continuous wave mode at multiple frequencies. Optimized transmitter-receiver spacing configurations and multi-frequency operation provide sufficiently diverse information to help assess the metal loss in each individual pipe for a wide range of configurations. The tool uses a sophisticated workflow of data processing and inversion algorithms to decouple individual thickness information from the measured data. The capabilities of the tool are demonstrated using two 400-ft long pipe mockups, each having 18 different combinations of overlapping and non-overlapping defects in five-, four-, and three-pipe sections. The configurations of the pipes used in the mockups were chosen to cover typical well completions commonly used in the Middle East. Data from the mockups are validated using synthetic data generated using two-dimensional (2D) computer models. The tool has delivered unprecedented accurate assessments of the fourth and fifth pipes, as well as an accurate assessment of the commonly evaluated first, second, and third pipes. The sensitivity of the inversion to model mismatches, such as those introduced by decentralized pipes, is studied by deliberately decentralizing one of the mockup pipes over a length of the log. An algorithm designed to correct for pipe eccentricity is also demonstrated. The results from the surface testing are discussed along with the performance of the tool in a test well with pipe configurations similar to the mockups. In the studied test well, the tool was able to identify defects in the outermost strings. This solution utilizes a novel inversion algorithm of big data from multi-frequency array sensors to derive individual pipes corrosion. This technology can significantly improve proactive decision making for mature well operations, especially in areas with high corrosion rates and shallow outer casing corrosion.
