Abstract: This dissertation has as its main theme the presence of the "Clarim" in Brazil and it uses as a musical instrument in the Royal and Imperial Chapel of Rio de Janeiro in the beginning of the nineteenth century. According to our research, in the course of Brazilian history "clarim" was one of the names used to refer to the natural trumpet. In this work mention is made to extant information available on the presence of the trumpet in this country; data has been collected on its use from the earliest days of the nation to the middle of the 19thcentury which coincides with the appearance and use of the chromatic trumpet by the introduction of valves. Initially we demonstrate the historical contextualization of this instrument in a general way, investigating aspects about its possible origins and development to the time of the introduction of valves; research is also included on the reconstruction of the historical trumpet and its use in modern day performances. We have also investigated the earliest ethnic groups in this country that may have had involvement with the natural trumpet with special attention to its use in the Northeastern region and in the State of Minas Gerais, but most especially in the Royal and Imperial Chapel of Rio de Janeiro in the early Nineteenth Century. At this time upon the arrival of the Portuguese Court to the South American continent, questions are raised on subjects such as the influence and reflection of European musical practice of the time in Brazil; repertoire and performance possibilities of the clarim as exemplified by musical manuscripts belonging to the "Acervo do Cabido Metropolitano" of Rio de Janeiro. A thematic bibliography and biographical information on trumpet players active in the Chapel or in the city of Rio de Janeiro during the nineteenth century is also provided.

Abstract: The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the syntactic, semantic, pragmatic change of the juntives porém, contudo, todavia, entretanto and no entanto under the perspective of grammaticalization in order to search for the evidence of the hypothesis of a trajectory of the kind adverb > conjunction through contextual analysis which can explain the origin of the adversative use as a conjunction in the history of Portuguese. We adopted, in this paper, the most classical concept of grammaticalization, which, according to Hopper and Traugott (2003), foresees that lexical items can, in some contexts, assume grammatical functions or continue to develop new ones. This process involves growing pragmatization of meanings (semantic change) and recategorization of the item (syntactic change). The investigation of the juntives changes analyzed in this paper is based on a corpus composed of historical texts and texts of contemporary Portuguese, which comprehends the archaic (century XIII to XV), modern (XVI and XVII) and contemporary (XVIII to XXI) periods. Considering the semantic, syntactic and pragmatic factors in the reconstruction of the trajectory of grammaticalization of each one of the juntives, we can attest that the adversative and conjunctional functioning emerged in different moments in the history of Portuguese, a fact that, in contemporary Portuguese, put them in different points on the grammaticalization scale, which is: porém > todavia, contudo > entretanto > no entanto

Grammaticalization (GR) is a unidirectional historical process of changes in linguistics in which items with lexical or less grammatical content start acting as grammatical items throughout time, abstractizing and strengthening its meaning as for the speaker’s expressiveness. Cognitive mechanisms such as metaphor and metonymy act in this process of change, whereas they cause meaning abstractization and syntactic recategorization induced by the linguistic context. Besides, according to Traugott (1999), there are two mechanisms involved in the semantic change that keeps up with the GR which are subjectivization and intersubjectivization. Meanings become more focused on the speaker’s belief/attitude in relation to the listener through both mechanisms. Considering this vision and based on synchronic and diachronic data from Portuguese, the present work aims at researching the process of change responsible for syntactic and semantic alterations (pragmatizing meaning) of the concessive conjunction embora, which is a particle originated from the adverbial clause of time em boa hora, used to wish good luck in the XV Century. By means of this research it was possible to reconstruct diachronic usages of embora throughout Portuguese history, to learn about the context(s) that was(were) responsible for changes suffered by the item, and to find historical explanations for the usage in the current synchrony. Beyond that, some hypothesis related to unidirectionality and the origins of concessive conjunctions were also checked. In order to reach this aim, the present work also verified the different synchronic usages of embora in spoken and written Portuguese to find tips about the current behavior that can help in historical description.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the editorial, printing and marketing history of four Byzantine historical narratives, published between 1556 and 1645, and soon collectively identified under the name Corpus Historiæ Byzantinæ (hereinafter, 'Byzantine Corpus'). The four Byzantine historians - Ioannes Zonaras, Niketas Choniates, Nikephoros Gregoras and Laonikos Chalkokondyles - enjoyed considerable popularity in early modern Europe, with a peak of interest in the second half of the sixteenth century. This thesis aims at highlighting how these four texts, despite being so popular in a number of early modern European countries (particularly in the German-speaking area, in Italy and in France), did not do so for the same reasons: in fact, depending on the country in which these books were printed, they were marketed, perceived and read in very different ways. This element is particularly relevant in light of the fact that the Byzantine Corpus represents the earliest predecessor of the Corpus Fontium Historiæ Byzantinæ, the modern resource for the study of Byzantine historical sources. Chapter 1 analyses the early formation of the Byzantine Corpus and, in particular, the figure of Hieronymus Wolf, first editor of the Byzantine Corpus, often considered the 'father' of Byzantine studies; his relation with his patrons, the Fuggers of Augsburg; finally, his relation with his publisher, the Basel printer Johannes Oporinus. It then provides contextualised bibliographical and paratextual descriptions of the editiones principes of the Byzantine Corpus, all printed in Basel. Chapters 2-5 reflect the same comparative approach, used to investigate how the later editions of the Byzantine Corpus were prepared and marketed in different European countries: each chapter provides a bibliographical and paratextual analysis of the subsequent German, Italian, French and Genevan editions respectively. The Conclusions draw together all the information collected in the previous chapters and investigate three pivotal aspects of the Byzantine Corpus: i) the formation of the Byzantine Corpus and the individual popularity of each of the four Byzantine historians based on the frequency and popularity of both individual and collective editions; ii) the distinctive reasons of their popularity, analysed through a comparison of the different approaches with which editors and publishers have presented these texts to their respective audiences in Germany, Italy and France; iii) the reasons for the rise and decline in popularity of the Byzantine Corpus in the early seventeenth century.

In his cultural works, Freud presents an interesting view of the complicated connection between the individual and society. Like him, Wilhelm Reich and Herbert Marcuse theorize about this subject, emphasizing the problem in relation to the false consciousness and the lack of freedom in civilization. Then they used the link between psychoanalysis and historical materialism. In this research I intend to examine how they used this theoretical point and have got a systematic study of their society. So this will help us to study the possibility of the use of psychoanalysis in historical research. The choice of Reich and Marcuse is legitimated by historical research because they explored the history component of psychoanalytic categories.

Abstract:
This thesis by publication contains an introductory summary chapter and three papers. The first paper presents a study of how the concept of historical consciousness has been defined, applied, and justified in Swedish history didactical research. It finds that there is consensus regarding the definition of what a historical consciousness is, but that there is variation in how the concept is applied. It is suggested that this variation makes historical consciousness a complex and vague concept.      The second paper uses the results presented in the first paper as a point of departure and from thence argues for a broadened understanding of the concept of historical consciousness that incorporates its definition, application, development, and significance. The study includes research about historical consciousness primarily from Sweden, the UK, the USA and Canada. The paper presents a typology of historical consciousness and argues that level of contextualisation is what distinguishes different types of historical consciousnesses and that an ability to contextualise is also what makes historical consciousness an important concept for identity constitution and morality.      The third paper proposes a methodological framework of historical consciousness based on the theory of historical consciosusness presented in the second paper. It presents arguments for why the framework of historical consciousness proposed can be useful for the analysis of historical media and it discusses how aspects of the framework can be applied in analysis. It then presents a textbook analysis that has been performed according to the stipulated framework and discusses its results regarding how textbooks can be used to analyse historical consciousness and its development.

Abstract:
The dissertation explores middle-school students' abilities to engage in historical thinking. I dispute the Hallam-Piaget model, which discourages analytical thinking through the assumption that children lack skills to think critically about history. My historical narrative inquiry model (1) teaches procedural knowledge (the process of "doing" history); (2) enhances interpretative skills; (3) cultivates historical perspectives based upon evidentiary history; and (4) encourages student authorship of historical narratives. In the fall semester of 2006, with a classroom of twenty-five seventh-graders, I initiated a research study designed to explore the impact of the historical narrative inquiry model through a sequence of thirty-two lessons. The lessons involved small- and large-group activities, including oral presentations, discussions about primary documents, and consideration of the relation between narratology and the creation of written history. Students generated their own historical narratives in order to articulate their perspectives. Eight students having varied reading-level proficiency served as primary participants in the study. Each of these students received pre- and post-intervention interviews. Outcomes reflected the enhancement of pedagogy intended to facilitate historical thinking and historical empathy in the classroom.

The purpose of this study was to determine if the use of primary source historical documents used in conjunction with the heuristics associated with historical reasoning (sourcing, corroboration, and contextualization) would lead to a subsequent development of historical empathy. Three intact groups (already formed history classes) from Northeast High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania were studied throughout a baseline and four trials for this study. One group was designated as the experimental condition and received primary source historical documents as well as scaffolding of the historical reasoning heuristics of sourcing, corroboration, and contextualization. The next group was designated as the comparison condition which received the primary source historical documents but no scaffolding on the aforementioned heuristics. The final group was designated as the control condition and received traditional textbook instruction throughout the four main trials of the study. Results showed that mean scores of the heuristics involved in historical reasoning as well as historical empathy increased simultaneously for the experimental as well as the comparison group throughout the study, with the experimental group showing the highest mean gains. However, whether training in the historical reasoning heuristics of sourcing, corroboration, and contextualization lead to historical empathy cannot be conclusively proven from this current study.

Abstract:
“Feeling Historical,” examines why history has played such a central role in the construction of queer identities by analyzing how same-sex desiring individuals, particularly elite white individuals, in the U.S. looked to history to construct and navigate their own sexual identities. My project begins in the late nineteenth-century U.S., when history took on new cultural significance in the United States. Americans, previously more preoccupied with the future than the past, became engrossed in finding truth in history and origins. Parallel to this preoccupation with the past was the emergence of modern notions of sexual identity and the rise of the new sexual science of “sexology.” For sexologists, same-sex desire was new, a product of modernity and degeneration in which the sexually deviant fell behind on the evolutionary ladder. “Feeling Historical” analyzes the cultural and racialized work of white queer individuals who pushed back against such pathologizing discourse, arguing that their sexual affinities were not something aberrant, connected to degenerate desires of the racial other. Instead, they positioned themselves as rooted in a complex whitewashed transnational and transhistorical past. Mobilizing the past to construct their present, these individuals often drew on orientalist histories of great ancient civilizations in which they believed same-sex desire was accepted and even celebrated. They did so to not only counter the homophobic violence they experienced in their own time but to also reclaim their privileged racial identities. Much cultural work went into the construction of such a queer history. Using an interdisciplinary framework linking history, memory studies, queer theory, performance studies, visual culture studies, and critical race studies, I examine how these individuals appropriated examples of same-sex desire in the history, literature, and art of Ancient Greece, Italy, and the Middle East with imperialist understandings of such cultures. I ask which histories they found useful, and how gender, race, class, and ethnicity informed their historical reclamations. Through acts of history writing, auto-biography, performance, sexual tourism, and the creation of queer archives, I argue that such same-sex desiring individuals used history to not only navigate their identities and carve out spaces in a hostile world where they could survive and even thrive, but also reclaim their racial privilege by fashioning a queer identity based on a past that positioned queerness as inherently white.

Abstract:

This dissertation reports design-based research that determined the characteristics of an effective intervention to improve adolescent historical argumentative writing. This study involved 89 diverse 11th grade students, including approximately 50% Hispanic students and 12% students with disabilities. It compared a treatment that taught students to write warrants using historical thinking to explain how evidence supports a claim, and a comparison treatment that taught students to find and evaluate evidence for particular claims and sides. Both groups read a text set about the controversy surrounding the explosion of the battleship U.S.S. Maine at the start of the Spanish-American War. The intervention was designed to improve student ability to 1) select effective warrants reflecting different types of historical thinking, 2) generate their own warrants when given a claim and evidence, and 3) write more effective warrants in their own argumentative essays. When the most reliable study measures were combined and analyzed using MANOVA, there was a significant overall treatment effect. Follow up ANOVAs indicated a statistically significant effect for selecting warrants, but not writing warrants. The mean difference was greatest in items reflecting corroboration, a heuristic that requires reading several documents and giving more weight to evidence found in common across accounts. Both conditions struggled to differentiate between more and less effective warrants. These findings matter because historical argumentative writing involves advanced literacy skills similar to those needed for online reading and engaged citizenship. Based on these findings, the intervention was refined to include additional scaffolding for collecting evidence across texts and explicit instruction in differentiating between more and less effective warrants. The findings were used to develop a theory of teaching argumentative writing to inform work in similar contexts. This theory emphasizes backwards planning of units centered around a historical controversy from the writing students will do at unit’s end. It emphasizes the importance of teachers reading historical texts closely themselves and identifying where students can use historical thinking heuristics to warrant claims about the historical controversy. Through this approach, students build understanding of content and disciplinary literacy skills simultaneously through reading, reasoning, and writing across texts.

Abstract:
A creative writing component and a related critical component combine as a single thesis on the research and integration of historical sources into fictional narrative. The creative writing section is presented first. The Thousand Yard Memory, a novel, is set in post-war Britain in 1947. David Reece, a twenty three year old veteran of the Second World War Burma Campaign, arrives at Northfield Military Psychiatric Hospital in 1947. He is treated there by Daniel Carter, a Psychiatrist who has worked at the hospital throughout the war, specialising in psychotherapy. David and Daniel interact with each other as patient and psychiatrist, but they are also on parallel tracks, having both reached a crisis point in their lives. David has failed in his attempt to fit back into civilian life. Daniel is facing an uncertain professional future in post war military psychiatry. Both patient and psychiatrist are forced to confront their past experiences, and slowly begin to realise the possibility of change. The critical component, Recreating the Past, examines the challenges of researching and integrating historical sources into fictional narrative, and the implications which arise from the process. Pat Barker's novel Regeneration (1991), exemplifies the key aspects under consideration in this thesis, and is used as the main reference text. The section is divided into three parts. Part One presents an interdisciplinary element, exploring the similarities and differences between the way a novelist and a historian work with historical sources. Part Two posits that there are ethical dimensions involved in the creative choices a novelist makes when using sources. Part Three offers an overview of the process involved in researching and integrating sources for The Thousand Yard Memory, and the insights this process provided into the issues identified in Parts One and Two.

Abstract:
The reconstruction of historical buildings has been debated by preservationists, archeologists and historians, both with each other and within their own fields. But no matter how intensely scholars discuss and disagree on the subject, professionals at historic sites still continue to reconstruct historical buildings. The questions surrounding historical reconstruction include: is it ethical to reconstruct historical buildings? Is it worthwhile to reconstruct historical buildings for the benefit of the general public? I surveyed historical site workers from across the country and visitors from Red Hill National Memorial, the last home of Patrick Henry. From the survey, visitors seem to remember where they have seen reconstructions, sometimes what happened to the original buildings and learn about the history and preservation of the historic location. Sites that continue to reconstruct and follow all the preservation laws and regulations and inform the public on why the site reconstructed the building(s) are getting it right.

Abstract: In his cultural works, Freud presents an interesting view of the complicated connection between the individual and society.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the influence that certain forms of history writing in the nineteenth century had upon the process of capturing past experience as history through narrative. The thesis adopts a constructivist approach, investigating the ways that humans generate knowledge and meaning from their experiences and ideas. Working on the premise that the observation of the past is an active, constructive process of understanding, this study explores the development of the historical novel as a model of historical experience and knowledge. Chapter one presents an overview of nineteenth-century historiography to highlight the context in which the discipline of history adopted elements of empirical data analysis, and the influence these practices had upon the development of realism in the novel. The reasons behind the interest in history in the nineteenth century are explored, as are the rise of the historical novel and popular history writing that accompanied it. Chapter two examines Thackeray's treatment of grand narrative, exemplified in Thomas Macaulay's History of England, and centres on Thackeray's fictional memoir, The History of Henry Esmond. The chapter references Carlyle's work on the heroic, using Henry Esmond's position as historical participant and self-fashioned author to investigate the staging of history through narrative. Chapters three and four examine George Eliot's historical works, Romola and Middlemarch, in the context of Eliot's formulation of the historic imagination, and its effect upon the representation of history in her work. Romola and Middlemarch select hidden forms of historical narrative and develop different techniques of observation to relay a distinct view of the past through its representation. Romola perceives historic events from the position of the domestic, female central character, while Middlemarch studies the significance of un-historic acts through the un-historic narrative of Dorothea. Both texts draw upon Thomas Carlyle's essays on history and Past and Present to develop a view of history influenced by the processes used to describe its reanimation. Chapter five investigates Thomas Hardy's The Trumpet-Major, exploring the relevance of Hardy's selection of a historically 'insignificant' event for the subject of his novel. Carlyle's vision of world history is contrasted with Hardy's transformation of history into direct experience in the novel, and the chapter explores the implications that this idea of history has upon the construction of reality portrayed in his novels.

Abstract:
This dissertation concentrates on the interplay between politics and financial markets using various empirical tools applied on historical financial statistics. The first essay examines the effect of stock transaction taxation on trading activity and asset prices, specifically focusing on the case of early 20th century Sweden. The main finding is that the tax substantially reduced trading as well as the level of asset prices. In the second essay, modern ex post historical writing is contrasted with the ex ante views of contemporaries which are estimated from historical price data. The specific case study is the events around World War II related to the Nordic countries and Germany. The comparisons point out considerable differences between the assessments of historical events in the ex post and ex ante approaches. The third essay is an empirical study of price controls on asset price movements and how these controls affect asset returns. The study finds that the controls have large significant effects which even may influence estimates of the long-run equity premium. Altogether, this raises concerns about the use of century-long series of asset returns without correcting for the impact of institutional variation and market constraints. Finally, the fourth essay examines the growth effects of international financial liberalization and integration using a large country- industry sample from the 1980s. The main result is that industries highly dependent on external financing do not experience higher value added growth in countries with liberalized financial markets. Liberalization does, however, increase the growth rates of both output and firm creation among externally dependent industries. These results are consistent both with increased competition and increased outsourcing.

Full text
Abstract:
My dissertation looks critically at Grace Aguilar’s historical romance novels and short stories, and investigates English writers’ uses of history in early- to mid-nineteenth century fiction. Shifting the current critical emphasis on Aguilar’s Jewish texts, I have analyzed the ways in which Aguilar revises the genres of the national tale, the gothic romance, and the medieval romance in order to demonstrate her participation in the construction of nineteenth-century domestic values. In Chapter One, I introduce to critical debate Aguilar’s juvenilia, relying on unpublished manuscripts and novels published only in the twentieth century to establish the origins of Aguilar’s interest in history and historical writing. Locating Aguilar’s narrative style in the early nineteenth-century national tale, I show that as a child Aguilar envisioned the English and Scottish nations as a family, making domesticity both a private and a public—a female and a male—value. Chapter Two focuses on Aguilar’s use of history to express nineteenth-century domestic ideals in her version of the gothic romance. Deploying the setting of the Catholic Inquisition in Spain and Portugal, Aguilar writes gothic tales that unite Jewish and Protestant gender values. She makes heroic the Jewish female martyr to suggest not only that nineteenth-century Protestants and Jews share similar domestic principles, but also that Jewish women could be seen as ideal models for Protestant women. Finally, in Chapter Three I explore Aguilar’s participation in the nineteenth-century medievalist tradition by reflecting on her revision of nineteenth-century literary idealizations of the Middle Ages. In these short stories, Aguilar fictionalizes the sixteenth-century European chivalric ethos, looking critically at the role of women in court society at the end of the Middle Ages. Deploying the tropes prevalent in popular nineteenth-century anti-medievalist fiction, Aguilar debunks celebrations of the Middle Ages by showing how chivalry is antagonistic to nineteenth-century domesticity.

Abstract:
Statistical techniques are well established in many historical disciplines and are used extensively in music analysis, music perception, and performance studies. However, statisticians have largely ignored the many music catalogues, databases, dictionaries, encyclopedias, lists and other datasets compiled by institutions and individuals over the last few centuries. Such datasets present fascinating historical snapshots of the musical world, and statistical analysis of them can reveal much about the changing characteristics of the population of musical works and their composers, and about the datasets and their compilers. In this thesis, statistical methodologies have been applied to several case studies covering, among other things, music publishing and recording, composers’ migration patterns, nineteenth-century biographical dictionaries, and trends in key and time signatures. These case studies illustrate the insights to be gained from quantitative techniques; the statistical characteristics of the populations of works and composers; the limitations of the predominantly qualitative approach to historical musicology; and some practical and theoretical issues associated with applying statistical techniques to musical datasets. Quantitative methods have much to offer historical musicology, revealing new insights, quantifying and contextualising existing information, providing a measure of the quality of historical sources, revealing the biases inherent in music historiography, and giving a collective voice to the many minor and obscure works and composers that have historically formed the vast majority of musical activity but who have been largely absent from the received history of music.

Abstract: The main purpose of this paper was to better understand distant education in a global perspective, as well as its history through time and specific literature concerning the topic and, as specific purpose, know, understand, and analyze the coming up of distant education in the brasilian political and social contexts by the end of the 30¿s and beginning of the 40¿s, checking up theorist support in specific literature about distant education in Brazil and literature came from alike areas such as Education, Politics, Economy, History and Sociology. The chosen method was the qualitative analysis in social and political perspectives, organizing the work in 05 stages, in order to point out: the meaning given by researches to distant education, once their literature based this paper concerning the type of pedagogy; the distant education history trough out time; the distant education history in Brazil until the systematic education was started up at the end of the 30¿s and beginning of 40¿s; the distant education importance in the social and political contexts in Brazil, specially its interface with politics and economy since the beginning of the 30¿s; and the educational, political and economical contexts in Brazil along the same decade, furthermore the bases where systematic distant education has been initialized. By means of the scarcity on the pioneer of the long-distances education in Brazil, one searched given together to the "primary sources", through depositions of the representatives of the pioneering institutions, as well as of interviews and depositions of some representative of the "alive history" of our long-distance education. The research has proved that distant education in Brazil has two pretty different points: the official distant education approved by the Government in the 70¿s and the non-official one which was started and coordinated by Instituto Monitor in 1939, and has been continued by Instituto Universal Brasileiro from 1941, on looking up at that time for work education to the ones in need.

Abstract: This study aims to investigate Brazil¿s Positivist Church educational proposals between 1870 and 1930. The anthology of Brazil¿s Positivist Church in Rio de Janeiro holds a vast amount of documents on the Positive Church¿s political platform of Miguel Lemos (1845¿1917), and Teixeira Mendes (1855¿1927) administrators of the positivist Church. On these documents orthodox perspective of the positivism is registered. The adopted methodology is based in historical research based on primary sources such as pamphlets and press releases published by the Positivist Church of Brazil. Examining these sources we concluded that political institution reform was one of the main flags of the positivists, where education was given the task of form new mind and character habits, disseminating new moral and intellectual standards aiming the building of national unity enveloping the republican project. The understanding on the material production process of the educational proposals of the Positivist Church of Brazil expressed a more wide-ranging project shaped by the political and economic movement that took place late in the 19th century and scored the middle class as hegemonic. Positivism exacerbate the technique, science, middle class order, and myths, among them the thought that it is through education that transformation would take place. The faith in this institution and the middle class school generalization process did not have as objective to liberate the working class of its social condition but keep it under its domain based on principles that qualify the new school, that is, as public, universal, lay, mandatory, and free for all. This process gained peculiar characteristics in each country. In Brazil, it also gained its singularity, but it was articulated to movement of ideas and capitalism globalization during its imperialist phase. Brazil¿s Positivist Church theoretical elaborations and political actions were not an isolated process, but comprised an expression of the middle class thought. The national system education organization in Europe imposed itself as a demand of the Industrial Revolution and the church being the speaker of this process. The Positivist Church possessed a set of educational proposals to be sent to the Brazilian society so that it would interfere in the directions and actions of educational questions, attached to the anti-revolutionary idea, facing the threats to the middle class from the working class. Positivism consisted in one of the philosophical fundaments of the republican idea attributing to education, especially to schools, the role of instrument of action in the process of Brazil Republican social and political organization. When presented as an innovating thought, late in the XIX century, positivism constituted in a conservative-moderate idea facing tension among social classes

Abstract: The present study proposes a differentiated look at the harpsichord which seeks beyond its identification, from the organological and repertoire¿s viewpoint, solely with a European "soft music" project. From a reconstruction of the instrument¿s historical course ¿ regarding its constructive, repertoire and practice aspects ¿ considerations are traced about the many aesthetical debates over its adoption and authenticity, referring to accuracy and legitimacy criteria of the harpsichord and its pliancy. In a second historical approach to the instrument¿s course, the study aims to reconstruct the trajectory of its Brazilian insertion highlighting São Paulo and Campinas, from references from the Colonial period, of the 1950¿s to 70¿s, until the formation of the first higher education course in harpsichord at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (State University of Campinas). Over that course of events, intervened a variety of conceptions related to cultural manners and demands of musical tastes, with a much less restrictive reading of the uses of harpsichord, or "harpsichords", being conducted. Dialoguing with the diverse panorama of musical practices, the study evidences the subtle, but significant presence of the harpsichord in modern pop culture music manifestations, such as Rock, Jovem Guarda, Tropicalismo, among others. It also approaches current repertoire written for harpsichord in the language of Brazilian popular-sourced music. Through two instance studies, it presents analytical readings of compositions for instrumental duets with harpsichord from composers José Eduardo Gramani (1944-1998), who wrote forty seven works for harpsichord and Brazilian fiddle, and Ricardo Matsuda (b. 1965), who composed twelve works for harpsichord and Brazilian ten-stringed guitar. The Topic Theory¿s referential was sought as the proposed analytical tool for the musical material utilized, obtaining the characterization of the musical speech as to comprehend Brazilian musicality. Such foci of analysis guide not only the readers as to comprehend the structural mechanisms and significant features of selected works, but also does promote an informed listening and a dialogue with the two authors, which leave creative and expressive musical records for the harpsichord, in sounds with particular Brazilian temper and atmosphere

Edwards, Jane Marian. "'Bettered by the borrower' : the use of historical extracts from twelfth-century historical works in three later twelfth- and thirteenth-century historical texts." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/7247.

Abstract:
This thesis takes as its starting point the use of extracts from the works of historical authors who wrote in England in the early to mid twelfth-century. It focuses upon the ways in which their works began to be incorporated into three particular texts in the later twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. Through the medium of individual case studies – De Abbatibus (Abingdon), CCCC 139 (Durham) and The London Collection three elements are explored (i) how mediaeval writers used extracts from the works of others in ways which differed from modern practices with their concerns over charges of plagiarism and unoriginality (ii) how the structural and narrative roles which the use of extracts played within the presentation of these texts (iii) how the application of approaches developed in the twentieth century, which transformed how texts are now analysed, enabled a re-evaluation and re-interpretation of their use of source material with greater sensitivity to their original purposes This analysis casts fresh light upon the how and why these texts were produced and the means by which they fulfilled their purposes and reveals that despite their disparate origins and individual perspectives these three texts share two common features: (i) they follow a common three stage pattern of development (ii) they deal with similar issues: factional insecurities and concerns about the quality of those in power over them – using an historical perspective The analysis also reveals the range of techniques which were at the disposal of the composers of these texts, dispelling any notion that they were either unsophisticated or naïve in their handling of their source materials. Together these texts demonstrate how mediaeval authors used combinations of extracts as a means of responding quickly and flexibly to address particular concerns. Such texts were not regarded as being set in stone but rather as fluid entities which could be recombined at will in order to produce new works as required.

Abstract:
The thesis analyzes the origins and the formative period of Virginia’s historical marker program. It shows that historical markers were critical to the success of Harry Flood Byrd’s administration and his Commission on Conservation and Development. The thesis also examines how Virginia’s marker program set the standard for roadside commemoration across the entire United States. Lastly, the work appraises the influence of Dr. Hamilton James Eckenrode, his pioneering methods of historical commemoration, and his central role in the success of Virginia’s marker program.

Kirca, Mustafa. "Postmodernist Historical Novels: Jeanette Winterson." Phd thesis, METU, 2009. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12610813/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation is to study postmodern historical novels, which are labeled &ldquo
historiographic metafictions&rdquo
(Hutcheon 1989: 92), in terms of their allowing for different voices and alternative, plural histories by subverting the historical documents and events that they refer to. The study analyzes texts from feminist and postcolonial literature, Jeanette Winterson&rsquo
s The Passion and Sexing the Cherry, and Salman Rushdie&rsquo
s Midnight&rsquo
s Children and Shame as examples in which the transgression of boundaries between fact and fiction is achieved. Basing its arguments on postmodern understanding of history, the thesis puts forward that historiography not only represents past events but it also gives meaning to them, as it is a signifying system, and turns historical events into historical facts. Historiography, while constructing historical facts, singles out certain past events while omitting others, for ideological reasons. This inevitably leads to the fact that marginalized groups are denied an official voice by hegemonic ideologies. Therefore, history is regarded as monologic, representing the dominant discourse. The thesis will analyze four novels by Winterson and Rushdie as double-voiced discourses where the dominant voice of history is refracted through subversion and gives way to other voices that have been suppressed. While analyzing the novels themselves, the thesis will look for the metafictional elements of the texts, stressing self-reflexivity, non-linear narrative, and parodic intention to pinpoint the refraction and the co-existence of plural voices. As a result, historiographic metafiction is proved to be a liberating genre, for feminist and postcolonial writers, that enables other histories to be verbalized.

Thompson, Benjamin. "Reparations for historical social injustice." Thesis, McGill University, 2010. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=87022.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis concerns the justifiability of claims for reparations for historical injustice as claims based on reparative justice. The first component of the thesis aims to bring clarity to this broad topic by, firstly, describing five necessary conditions for a claim to be compelling as a claim of reparative justice and by, secondly, noting some important difficulties that claims for reparations for historical injustice tend to face in meeting these five conditions. The second component concerns the specific case of reparations to African-Americans for slavery and other past legal injustices. The thesis argues that a case for reparations based on reparative justice can meet the five relevant necessary conditions. An important aspect of this argument is the emphasis that it places on how past legal injustice put in place unjust social processes which have perpetuated to the present-day leading to contemporary African-Americans being wronged and harmed.
