Abstract:
The dissertation explores the history and activities of the Brno-located Town and Country Planning Department of The Research Institute for Building and Architecture (RIBA) since its foundation in 1954 until its abolishment in 1994. As a part of the department functioning, a description of its main research tasks and publications, which had played an essential part while formulating theory and methodology of urban planning after the 2nd World War in Czechoslovakia, are introduced. Special attention is paid to tasks and publications whose authors and research workers applied interdisciplinary approaches and – in spite of the prevailing totalitarian regime – managed to apply their experience acquired abroad to produce highly influential works such as The Principles and Rules of Spatial Planning. Another objective of the dissertation is the creation of a complex bibliography of texts that were produced by the department (books, reports on the outcomes of research tasks that had been explored at the Town and Country Planning Department and that were released internally as handbooks serving research workers of the institute and other institutions focusing on building and architecture). Depictions of the Brno department of RIBA from the perspective of two of its significant representatives who have outlived the institution they had witnessed to be founded and to the functioning of which they had significantly contributed, become a key part of the text: Ing. arch. Vladimír Matoušek, CSc., the second head of the Town and Country Planning Department of RIBA and Ing. arch. Dušan Riedl, CSc., a theoretician of architecture and urban planning and a top expert on Czech national herritage. As the topic has not yet been subjected to scholarly research, the main objective of the work is to create the very first complex text on the Brno department of RIBA and its activities. The circumstances surrounding the constitution of RIBA in the context of other similarly functioning research institutes are pursued with a special focus on the fields of building, architecture and urban planning as well as legislative embedding of its foundation and functioning, its organization structure, staff, definition of taskmasters and the way the tasks were approached, relations to other institutions in the field, publishing activities and transfer of theoretical research outcomes to practice. The text also deals with the state of present-day research of architecture and urban planning. Archive material and publications released by the institute represent a predominant source of information about RIBA activities. They are now stored at the archive of ABF Foundation in Prague (the foundation has been administering both the archive and library of the Prague department of RIBA since its abolishment), at the library of The Institute for Spatial Development in Brno (the institute administers the library of the former Brno department) and at the Moravian Land Archive in Brno. Both of the archives have been thoroughly researched by the author. Critical reflections upon the urban-planning department of RIBA occurring in contemporary publications and periodicals are another important source of information which help to specify the character of its activities (recent literature mentions RIBA scarcely, a complex evaluation is still missing). Oral history reported by former employees of RIBA, who had contributed to the first-rate quality of its research activities.

Abstract:
The main goal of this thesis is to present contemporary contemporary slovenian architectural scene to the Czech audience. Since the fall of Iron curtain is the slovenian architecture regarded as the most advanced from the former Eastern bloc. During the stay in Slovenia it's succeeded to collect sufficient informations for further analysis. Daily contact with the local culture and buildings helped in understanding of the current situation in the Slovenian architectural scene. The work provides the most important architectural works from Fabiani through Plečnik, Ravnikar, Podrecca to successors of generation Sixpack. The aim of this work is to help document and analyze the causes of Slovenia success and with this conclusion help to improve the situation in our country, where there is a wide range of high-quality buildings, but they remain almost unnoticed and unknown on the international scene. The study focused which role played the biggest importance in starting Slovenian model. Work search if it's possible to re-establish cooperation in the field of architecture. The aim of these was to find out how to apply the knowledge acquired in the Czech environment. Lessons from Slovenia could be summarized in two main areas: how to successfully cultivate their land and about how to be able to report about it externally.

Abstract:
The thesis deals with the history and the interpretation of the development of sacral architecture during the first half of the twentieth century. It interprets the topic in a broad framework, which mentions the historical preconditions of this development and in the most important cases also its international relations. The introductional chapters list all up-to-date publications to the topic and suggest certain means of interpretation of sacral architecture which reflects the natural division of this topic between the disciplines of architectural theory and religion science. The own thesis begins with characteristics of social and religious situation in the Austria-Hungary and its consequences of sacral architectural development. It mentions basic examples of sacral buildings and the measure of their relation to the contemporary architectural development in general. Subsequently it mentions transformational influence of World War I and of declaration of souverain Czechoslovakia, which led to the emergence of new churches with their own architectural ambitions and also to the focus shifting of discipline to new contemporary topics. It follows the parallels with contemporary architectural trends of 1920's and the level of their use in the specific field of religious buildings also in relation to individual churches with their different architectural developments. Further it mentions sacral building development in 1930's with the emphasis in relation to the contemporary social atmosphere and in accent transformation between conservative and progressive religious approach. Than it follows with a review of religious culture transformation during World War II in Protectorate Czech Moravia and shows particularity of unnumerous examples of church buildings and projects from this era. The final part than reflects the evolution of the social role of religion after the War as well as an influence of communist coup in 1948 at potential of sacral architecture. It states the negative influence of both totalitarian regimes on the quality of sacral buildings of following period and on a poor measure of disciplines theoretical knowledge, which among others results in unsufficient primary sources, from which this thesis would likely have taken. Even when this thesis have not and cannot have an ambition of full exploration of the topic, it presents the factography and collecion of interpretations, by means of which the significant gap in the historiography of 20th century Czech sacral architecture can be at least partially bridged.

Abstract:
Spa is located on the outskirts of the Swiss city of Yverdon. Area is surrounded by disparate buildings especially residential character. There are historical buildings on the land and buildings of the spa and hotel. The current spa and the outbuilding of hotel don´t meet requirements, that´s why the buildings will be replaced by a new complex. Neighbourhood doesn´t have any relationship with the spa, that´s why the whole land is surrounded by a wall. Water surface with three “floating” pavilions is inserted into this closed spa park. There are the public spa, the therapeutic spa and the part of the hotel on the water surface. Each of them works largely independently; they are connected by the water surface. The complex is separated by a part of shallow water from the park. It´s solitaire in the park, but it has close connection with it. The spa complex is located near the forest on the south part of the land, because the whole system is quite open.

Abstract:
The aim of the present thesis is to carry out an architectural study for the reconstruction of the chateau complex Zdounky, located near Kroměříž in Litenčiče Downs. The chateau complex covers the area of ca. 9 hectares and consists of a four-wing chateau, a Baroque granary, a new farm building with an old orchard, and a large landscape park in the English style with a number of small-scale buildings such as a greenhouse, an ice house and other valuable and remarkable natural sites, for instance an old lime tree alley or a restored animal park. The proposal complies with the intention of the current owners, i.e. to use the complex as a centre for environmental education of the youth and to make it available to the general public with an interest in nature and ecology. Therefore, the main goal of the study has been to find an optimal urban-architectural solution in order to preserve the historic value of the buildings and at the same time allow the possibility of using them for their new purposes. The concept of the reconstruction is influence by the correspondence of the surrounding landscape, the place’s history, the historic value of the individual buildings and the morphology of the terrain. The whole complex is organized in order to give the impression of unity where all the functions are connected in a logical way. It was the division of the complex into public, semi-public and private zones that represented the main guideline for the present plan. The design of the reconstructed chateau includes the semi-public and private zones - it comprises both the educational centre with accommodation as well as the owners’ residence surrounded by a private garden. The Baroque granary is reconstructed and used as a museum. Additionally, a new orangery is added and its facilities used for a cider house (in the form of a small café) where local production commodities are sold. Both of these are open to the general public as well as the chateau park. Furthermore, the design includes a trail around the chateau. For the purposes of the present thesis, it was necessary to find and redraw the old plans, verify and document their true condition and measure the Baroque granary, whose documentation was completely missing.

In Southern Moravia and Lower Austria there was engaged by Johann II of Liechtenstein Karl Weinbrenner. This architect left on the estates of the Liechtensteins ineffacable trace. As an architect and later as the director of the Liechtenstein Buildin Office at Lednice he projected a great number of buildings and some of them remained intact up to these days. Churches, chapels, parish houses, school, railway stations, hospitals, gamekeeper's lodges and some smaler farming houses built according to his plans still form a picturesque character of the countryside. At Lednice Karl Weinbrenner worked till 1909, that is for 25 years. In 1909 he was appointed a professor of German Technical School in Prague where he stayed till 1926 and as an emeritus professor till 1938. In spite of that we do not know too much about his life and work. In literature his name is mentioned only in case of church of Visitation of Virgin Mary at Poštorná and of church St. Michael the Archangel at Ladná. In Bohemian Lands there was not published any work dedicated to his life and work. The outcomes of the Second Vatican Council have brought essential changes into liturgy, having impacted the liturgical space as well. However, the totalitarian communist regime that was in power in Czech lands at the time allowed only a limited space for the application of the Council outcomes in practice. That is why the post-Council situation in liturgy is in many ways unique in the Czech Republic. After the Velvet Revolution there was a rapid and rapturous development that has brought not only positives, but also certain negatives stemming from the too-quickly loosening grip of bondage. The aim of this thesis is to monitor the state of the discussion on liturgical space in the period between the Second Vatican Council and the present day. The theoretical part looks at the summary of the discussion in the Czech Republic before the Second Vatican Council, then briefly presents concept of sacred space of the Second Vatican Council and at the end outlines the pre-Council and the post-Council European context. The aim of this thesis is to conduct a survey of the preservation of architectural cultural heritage at the end of the 1980s and beginning of the 1990s. This will be demonstrated using as an example the historical centre of Prague. The thesis is divided into two similar parts. The first one focuses on the system, workings and legislation of heritage preservation in the 1980s. Partially it describes broader social and political aspects of the 1980s as well. The second part addresses the same topics, but during the beginning of the 1990s. In each case, three heritage preservation examples have been selected and these provide a closer examination of the system of cultural heritage preservation described earlier. The research work conducted demonstrates that whilst during the 1970s and 1980s a preservation system of the centre of Prague was gradually established, the 1990s saw the system being slowly disrupted and weakened, whether intentionally or unintentionally. However, heritage preservation never achieved a fully satisfactory standard in either studied period.
