Abstract:
STRESZCZENIE Dychotomia "sztuczny "/"naturalny " oraz historyczne zjawisko funkcjonujqcego jçzyka wynalezionego Artykul dotyczy dyskusji (jeszcze wciaz w krçgach fachowych rozpowszechnionej) klasycznej dychotomii miedzy okresleniami "jçzyk naturalny" i "jçzyk sztuczny". Okazuje sie jednak, že to trzecie rozróžnienie Kellera obejmuje jeszcze wiecej; mianowicie — z jezyków powstalych w wyniku planowania — conajmniej esperanto. Od poczatku 20-go wieku dajace sie zauwažyč przejscie esperanta z kategorii "artefaktów" do kategorii "zjawisk trzeciego rodzaju" naležy bez watpienia do jednego z najciekawszych procesów w historii jçzyka.

Abstract:
This essay examines the controversial stories and implications of two memorials built in March 2005 by former boat people from Vietnam on Pulau Bidong (Malaysia) and on Pulau Galang (Indonesia) to commemorate the refugee exodus that ensued after the end of the Vietnam War (April 1975). Tracing the histories and analyzing the contents of these objects, this essay not only illuminates the intertwining social, cultural, political, economic, moral, and spiritual dimensions of contemporary diasporic Vietnamese commemorative practices, but also explains how and why these commemorative practices are entangled in local, national, international, and transnational dynamics and therefore have multilateral impacts.

Abstract:
Đổi Mới reforms triggered significant changes in the Vietnamese art world, including new institutional spaces, platforms for critical discourse, and growing artistic mobility. However, it is important to question the ways in which the use of Đổi Mới as a blanket indicator of artistic reform has further constructed a homogeneous representation of “Vietnamese contemporary art.” The authors consider the relationship of Đổi Mới to the “globalization” of Vietnamese art with attention to questions of art historiography (the coining of such terms as “post-Đổi Mới Vietnamese art”) and variations in regional developments (positing local art histories against the national narrative).

The most important moment of whole project is the change of the status. Creation of unique sarcophagus for an object of mass-production - one of many globally manufactured objects become a part of a unique, authentic object and authorship. Transformation of one of the mass-product to the skeleton of author's object. Mass-product gives dimensions to the original object - it is directing process of creation. By creating its own unique case the object of mass-production is finally closer to human scale: one piece of furniture vs. one carpenter.

Abstract:
New architecture will invariable be placed next to the old architecture because cities and human settlements last for generations and as humans and tribal species we invariably congregate and build new buildings to live-in, work-in and entertain in. Thus we create cities from ever increasing smaller settlements. And the city is the playground where the new merges with that which has been built already – merging the new and the old. Old town Alexandria is one such place where new and old exist side by side. There is no question that new architecture will be built. The questions are only what the new architecture will look like? What will it's existence respond to and what issues we as a society will choose to tackle with new architecture, if any. Will the new architecture and particularly infill architecture convey a purpose and meaning to rival that of its time-tested historic neighbors? And how the meaning and purpose be achieved in new architecture? This thesis explores the topic of new/ infill architecture finding place in historic districts in particular - Old Town Alexandria Historic District and Parker-Gray district. What has been the approach that has dictated the image and purpose of new architecture in historic districts in Alexandria? And can the new architecture have meaning and purpose all its own to rival that of its predecessors.

Abstract:

Abstract : The construction of buildings is an activity responsible for several environmental impacts. The environmental consequences of the building stock operation are also considerable, particularly regarding the energy consumption. In this context, the building stock requalification through rehabilitation of existing buildings can be a realistic alternative to reduce the environmental impacts caused by the construction industry. Rehabilitating a building is a unique opportunity to reach higher levels of environmental performance and especially to reduce the energy required for its operation. Rehabilitation is also an appropriate approach to revitalize and extend the lifespan of the recent past built heritage, such as those of the Modern Movement. The ability to demonstrate the environmental benefits in conserving buildings of cultural value brings new alternatives to preserve that heritage, deprived by common sense of historicity and legitimacy. The prospect of environmental indicators to evaluate the feasibility of architectural rehabilitation has been the focus of interest in this research, finding that the concept of avoided environmental impact is a relevant approach. The objective of this work is to develop a method, using life cycle analysis and based on the concept of avoided environmental impact, to assess the environmental feasibility of rehabilitation with focus on energy efficiency. In the proposed method, the feasibility of rehabilitation can be determined from the comparison between the environmental impacts involved in the rehabilitation and use of an existing building and those arising from the demolition of this building followed by the construction and use of a new equivalent building. The method proposed involved the development of a conceptual model for the comparative analysis; the completion of an application example, in which the environmental performance of a modern building from Florianópolis, SC, were evaluated; and the evaluation of the assumptions made in the conceptual model by a panel of experts, where the opinions of a group of professionals from different fields were collected through questionnaires. In the proposed method, the demolition of existing building is considered only to define the benchmark: the new construction scenario. The new construction scenario is represented by an archetype, parameterized with statistical data from local current construction standards, and meeting criteria for comparability with the existing building. In the rehabilitation scenario, different possibilities of implementing energy conservation measures in the existing building are evaluated. Building energy simulation was employed to estimate the energy consumption for the operation of buildings. The lifecycle inventory uses endorsed international databases. The applicability of different methods of impact assessment of the life cycle was evaluated by the expert panel considering indicators such as cumulative energy demand; ecological footprint; and human health, ecosystem diversity and availability of abiotic resources damages. The environmental feasibility of rehabilitation was assessed from the comparison of the environmental impacts accumulated over the life cycle for rehabilitation and new construction scenarios. In general, the proposed method was validated as a decision making tool by the panel of experts. The expectative that the environmental effects related to operation energy consumption of the buildings would be the most significant was confirmed through the application example, although the introduction of energy conservation measures is not always justified from an environmental perspective. On the final balance of the application example of the method, compared to new construction, the rehabilitation would be environmentally feasible in all methods of lifecycle impact analysis employed in the comparisons.

Abstract:
Henri Justel (Paris 1620 - London 1693) was a french, huguenot and anglophile erudite and a important member of the République des Lettres. He is not so wellknown in France because his poor literary contribution in spite of his very rich correspondence, of the brilliant private academy he was hosting in Paris, of his large network of relations and of his various interests in sciences as well as in humanities. One of those, Faith vs Reason, is to be dealt with overhere, either in his historical context or in Justel's circle. This very debate between Science and Faith lead to classify the philosophical options of many famous characters of the seventeenth century. Shall we be able to do so about Justel?

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose is to distinguish the relictual forest islands from the recent ones in an agricultural matrix; to inventory and characterize them and to assess their biodiversity, and eventually to develop a model. The method combines the resort to archives and aerial photographs with field studies (1996-2007). The mapping approach has been based on regression analysis (2004-1620). The time threshold has made it possible to identify 152 woodlots (<50ha) which presence was attested before 1620. The regression analysis to map the wood patches has been based on the path network, which is a fixed and structuring element of the landscape. There is a strong relation between the location of the relictual forest islands, the antique tracks and the medieval paths. The characterization and assessment of the relictual forest islands biodiversity have been carried out following a time and space pluri-scalar approach and from a comparison with recent forest islands. The analysis was based on the shapeless canopy, the texture and dynamics of the forest cover, the cuttings, the edges and the internal forest path network. The analysis of the internal structure focuses on the taxonomic diversity and the ecological diversity of the plant species and the indicator bird species. These analyses have stressed the specificity of the relictual forest islands, a model of which has been developed. They are either fragment of ancient forests, or, in most cases, secondary but old forest forms from the Gallo-Roman, Merovingian or medieval time

Abstract:
The first, theoretic, part of my thesis is based on the historical analysis of mutual relationships of Czech and Slovak people in the common country up to the year of 1992. The thesis also takes into consideration the outcomes of recent researches in fields of political sciences, sociology and other social disciplines to produce the most accurate description of the situation that preceded the break-up of 1992/1993 itself. The second, research, part of my thesis is effected by the method of oral history. Its aim is to investigate the opinions, views and experiences of various Czech and Slovak border citizens in the first half of the 90's in view of both the political development during dividing the Federation and the impact of the break-up on their daily lives - a new state line in proximity of their homes, establishment of border crossings and customs, changes in shopping habits, problems connected with work on the other side of the border line, visiting friends or organizing common events, school trips and the newly introduced problematics of people smuggling. It also aims to reflect the possible change of mind of some people toward the division.

Abstract:
Chronic mountain sickness (CMS), syndrome with manifestations of hypoventilation, hypoxemia, hyperviscosity, polycythemia, pulmonary hypertension, and right ventricular hypertrophy, is a recent history inthe western Himalyas (42675888 m asl). Six well defined subjects studied revealed: significant increasein fibrinogen (400±37 vs normal 275 ± 33 mg/dl), Hct(74.3±3.1 vs 45.2±3.2%) and Hb (23.1±2.6 vs 17.9±0.8g/dl); significant decrease in APTT (27.1±5.2 vs 54.6±7.9 sec), platelets (177.8±10.9 vs 197.4±19.3 thous/cmm), ELT (165±75 vs 399±48 min) and ESR (3.5±2.5 vs 6.0±3.5 mm/1 hr); and absolute eosinophil counts (465±69 vs 384±106). An accelerated Cell mediated immunity (CMI), in them, was evident by 'Spontaneous Flare', 4 + DNCB (di-nitro-chloroben- zene)-phenomenon and profuse lymphocyte recruitment in dermis.Theseresults indicate a state of hypercoagulability inCMS. Muscularisation and thrombosis of pulmonary arteris do occur in CMS. Accelerated CMI and augmented fibrinolytic activity in CMS account for its protracted course (8-25 months) to develop. Yogic breathing, acetazolamide, aspirin and evacuation to low heightshave a salutary effect. Steroids, medroxyprogesterone and phlebotomy bring reflief to these subjuects. Oxygen therapy, in CMS, has no role.

Abstract:

Abstract:
One of most confusing issues in riser engineering is the riser tension. The infamous effective tension equation relates it to the so-called material tension with external and internal pressures. Controversy remains after numerous papers published trying to clarify the subject, because different interpretations were presented by different authors. Instead of explaining this ‘abstract’ equation mathematically using the free body diagram and differential equation as done in the literatures, this paper presents a down-to-earth interpretation that follows the riser loading history which starts with the Effective Weight to re-derive the same equation. Four keys to solve the riser tension mystery are identified; they are the hydrostatic head pressure vs. applied pressure, pressure generates the pressure end cap load vs. none generated, the vertical (top-tensioned) riser vs. bent (catenary) riser, and the single string riser vs. multiple strings riser. Based on these four keys, this paper will address the difference between the effective tension and material tension and identify which tension is to be used in the stress calculation. Also presented in the paper is the driver-reactor theory developed to explain the tension load distribution among riser strings due to Poisson’s effect with the applied pressure.
