Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis investigates the possibility that there are other ways in which to represent the past, not just the traditional way as practised by historians. For instance, other forms such as historical fiction in the historical novel, and therefore, narrative, can act as an important conduit for conveying historical meaning. Through the examination of the historiographic metafiction of the South African writer, Etienne Van Heerden, this study has concluded that through a reading of both the author's belletristic and theoretical texts, readers interested in history and literature will gain some understanding of the problems that come with writing up the past. At the same time, they will gain some knowledge of a different way of writing about South African history, because the author portrays the historical events in a refreshing, vivid and imaginative way. However, it needs to be said from the outset that in no way is the writer of this thesis neglecting the merits of traditional history or advocating its abolition, which is, ultimately, the scientific way of representing the past and remains sacred and paramount for the historian, both amateur and professional.

The novel Clarice (1996), by Ana Miranda, completes the series of works, in which the narrator creates the authors’ of the Brazilian literary canon life. With those fictions, Miranda became part of a tendency in the contemporary literature that creates fictional biographies of writers or artists. In that sense, the present dissertation integrates a discussion of Miranda’s works included in the genre known as historiographic metafiction and also integrates an interpretative reading of Clarice, the study’s focus narrative. So, questions related to literature are thought in relationship with the history. Therefore, it shows a vision of group of Ana Miranda’s narratives that talk about the history of the Brazilian literature, being deepened in the concepts of fiction, metafiction and historiographic metafiction. In this general context, which deals with typology problems and poetic narrative, it grows Clarice’s literary analysis that directs the reading for the constitution of the work, concerning to the intertextual strategies, in this case Clarice Lispector’s fiction, which motivates the reflection around literary strategies as reading and writing.

Abstract: Fiction narratives of historic character like Umberto Eco's novel O Nome da Rosa allow a wide possibility of studies. Among them the importance of irony in Umberto Eco's text construction is realized. Through this irony it is seen how this fiction has a reflection about the concept of mimesis, as the reiterated use of intertextuality, element this often used in contemporary fiction works. Irony, recourse permanently present in narratives construction allows a relation between what is expected from a historical text - the truth - and what is expected from a fictional text - the invention. It enables, therefore, a reflection and questioning point of historical truth. It is noticed, then, the capacity that historical narrative, especially O Nome da Rosa, presents to reevaluate the mimetic concept not as a copy from reality, neither as a negation space of literary text's referencial condition. It enables just reconsideration on Aristotelian concept. In narrative construction it is visible how elements, like the narrator, are essential to the creation of a mentality in the reader that the truth is being told every instant, besides many other elements that have an authentication in the fictional discourse as a reality expression. This constant truth-reality environment is ruined every moment by the action of irony that reveals to the reader is not another truth, but a possibility of constant questioning of a simple act of instituting a unilateral truth. A wide work in its plurisignificant capacity, O Nome da Rosa presents, moreover, a philosophical discussion involving the laughter prohibition in Middle Ages, demonstrating, therefore, how Fiction and History match as elements of human knowledge boundaries and how they deserve to be studied and deepened for a better...
This research is linked to the Graduation Program in History on Universidade Federal de Pelotas(UFPEL) and its aim is to investigate the imagetical and textual narrative in the graphic novel V for Vendetta (1982-1988)created by the British Alan Moore and David Lloyd from their relation with their past aspects, specifically with politics and society in England in the 1980s. As artistic and cultural creation, it is believed it is a production period, which is concomitant with the mandates of Margaret Thatcher(1979-1990), known to promote the neoliberalism in England, was crucial to the references to the work contains, as political statement of its creators . In this sense, this paper has as theoretical framework the study of authors, as Ankersmit (2001,2012), White (1991, 1999, 2006, 2010), Hutcheon (1991), Kellner (2001), Foucault (1996), among others, which made it possible to glimpse the work not as merely as a source, but as a historic building from the 1980s English. The propose of analysis is guided in the original version of the work, interviews with authors and documentaries. From the reflections made, was realized that the historic building in V for Vendetta maintains approximations to the historiographical narratives, since our object of historiography study presents interpretations of a "reality " last.

This work consists of the study of Slash (1985), by Okanagan writer Jeannette Armstrong, and Mean Spirit (1990), by Chickasaw Linda Hogan, and it aims to examine the way in which the writers have fictionalized, in their books, certain events of the history of the American Indian peoples in the twentieth century, such as those concerning the militancy that gained strength in the 60s and the Osage murders that took place in the 20s. With that in mind, I have resorted to the concept of historiographic metafiction, proposed by Linda Hutcheon (1988, 1989) and to the memory studies by Anh Hua (2005), Maurice Halbwachs (2006), Márcio Seligmann-Silva (2008), Marianne Hirsch (2008) and Aleida Assmann (2011). Considering the works of Armstrong and Hogan as sites of enunciation of a type of cultural resistance that goes beyond tribal limits, I have chosen to adopt a cosmopolitan perspective such as sustained by Arnold Krupat (2002) and which leans on the postcolonial theories by Mary Louise Pratt (1999), Homi Bhabha (2013), Ella Shohat (1996), Stuart Hall (2003), Kwame Anthony Appiah (1997) and Liane Schneider (2002, 2008). Moreover, dialogues with the following authors of Native criticism were of the utmost importance: Graça Graúna (2013), Michael Dorris (1979), Craig S. Womack (1999), Louis Owens (1922), Simon Ortiz (2001), Winona Stevenson (1998), Paula Gunn Allen (1992) and Robert Warrior (2014). Thus, I have attempted to verify how the Amerindian resistance takes form in the writings of Armstrong and Hogan, who build narratives artistically complex and of an immense political relevance.

Full textThis dissertation investigates the ways through which the representation of the Canadian subject might be observed in two representative novels of contemporary Canadian literature: Obasan, by Joy Kogawa, and Alias Grace, by Margaret Atwood. This investigation also demonstrates that the search for the definition of a specific Canadian identity has been a constant and relevant theme to the countrys culture. The lack of definition concerning the meaning of being Canadian has also permeated Canadian Literature throughout the centuries, most notably since the XIX century. In order to observe the literary representation of the Canadian search for identity, this investigation makes use of the concepts related to the representation of traditionally silenced subaltern groups. The comparative analysis of the abovementioned novels contemplates the relationship between autobiographical memory and trauma, as well as the narrative similarities between fiction and history. This investigation also verifies the ways postmodern literature employs official documentation, historical accounts and (auto) biographical information in the rewriting of history through historiographic metafiction

In this work, our search object is the novel, Boca do Inferno, by Ana Miranda, adopting as the focus the interpretative analysis the inflows of the narrator voice in its immersion, in the search of the iconic subject: Gregório de Matos Guerra, his figure controversial; the uniqueness of his style, which give his poetry unique importance to Brazilian Literature. This work by Ana Miranda is a narrative construction based on confluences and tensions, created by various discourses, transiting on the frontiers between the historical universe and the history, that bring out lived and felt experiences, grouped in the vast imaginary in which the own poet and his work. The mirandian romanesque discourse will be observed here, in its enunciation, in the transfigurative reconstitution, in its narrativity that crosses the historical and social dimensions in its transcritical enterprise. It is intended, therefore, to investigate, in the discourse of transcreation and transfiguration, based on the presuppositions of theorists such as: Mikhail Bakhtin, Walter Benjamin, Roland Barthes, Homi Bhabha, Haroldo de Campos, Gérard Genette, Julio Plaza, Linda Hutcheon, others, that instrumentalize our critical discourse in the three chapters of this dissertation, being that in the first one we pointed out how Miranda did emerge the subject narrated by the procedures of its fictional language; and in the second, we dwell on the meanderings of the historiographical metafiction and, in the third, the approaches go back to what was used throughout the dissertation, ascertaining the discursive strategies in which Ana Miranda translates Gregório de Matos Guerra in its multiple dimensions, as central character of his romance.

(Hutcheon 1989: 92), in terms of their allowing for different voices and alternative, plural histories by subverting the historical documents and events that they refer to. The study analyzes texts from feminist and postcolonial literature, Jeanette Winterson&rsquo
s The Passion and Sexing the Cherry, and Salman Rushdie&rsquo
s Midnight&rsquo
s Children and Shame as examples in which the transgression of boundaries between fact and fiction is achieved. Basing its arguments on postmodern understanding of history, the thesis puts forward that historiography not only represents past events but it also gives meaning to them, as it is a signifying system, and turns historical events into historical facts. Historiography, while constructing historical facts, singles out certain past events while omitting others, for ideological reasons. This inevitably leads to the fact that marginalized groups are denied an official voice by hegemonic ideologies. Therefore, history is regarded as monologic, representing the dominant discourse. The thesis will analyze four novels by Winterson and Rushdie as double-voiced discourses where the dominant voice of history is refracted through subversion and gives way to other voices that have been suppressed. While analyzing the novels themselves, the thesis will look for the metafictional elements of the texts, stressing self-reflexivity, non-linear narrative, and parodic intention to pinpoint the refraction and the co-existence of plural voices. As a result, historiographic metafiction is proved to be a liberating genre, for feminist and postcolonial writers, that enables other histories to be verbalized.

Full textThis presents research is a study of the novelistic metamorphosis in A Força do Destino (1977), by Nélida Piñon. Its goal is to verify the narrative techniques employed in this novel, to establish correlations reflections on intercultural and discussing possible conclusions about the art of storytelling. The methodology applied is the theoretical research of qualitative nature. As to the means of investigation, it is a descriptive-explanatory literature since the work under consideration is an artistic expression and analysis explains how the development of the novel within the novel itself, typical case of historiographical metafiction occurs. The method used is deductive, and start from the premise that Nelida Piñon, to rescue the opera La Forza del Destino, by Giuseppe Verdi, reworks it in a parody way from the perspective of the chronicler Nélida, the narrator-character, do either A Força do Destino as simple mimesis. She breaks with the traditional Brazilian narrative and therefore intensifies, selectively, certain trends in the post- modernism.

From Ruth Rocha are used: O reizinho mandão, O sapo-vira-rei-vira-sapo ou o retorno do reizinho mandão, O rei que não sabia de nada, O que os olhos não veem; and from Cardoso Pires is used: Dinossauro excelentíssimo. We intend to show the relationship between fiction and reality in the countries involved working with these books. We started from the hypothesis that these works, written during the Brazilian military and Salazarism, contributed to the recognition of the importance of a democratic political system to bring freedom to the Brazilian and Portuguese nations. Our objective is also to demonstrate how the writers denounced the historical situations of the two countries, through the parody, the allegory and the carnivalization. The works analyzed are appropriate for junior readers as adult readers. Our research supports in works of Comparative Literature, Children and Youth Literature, Social and Political History of Brazil and Portugal.

Full textIn the Time of the Butterflies is a novel by the Dominican-American writer Julia Alvarez on the life and death of the Butterflies, Las Mariposas, codename of the Mirabal sisters in the national underground movement that fought against the dictatorial regime of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo in the Dominican Republic. The novel is an attempt to re-member the sisters assassination under the dictators orders, a story that has never been officially told. This dissertation aims to expose how literary form and political content are related in this novel. It argues that the blurring of three distinct literary genres historiographic metafiction, autobiography and the bildungsroman reflects the questioning of the boundaries between private and public, personal and political, self and other, individual and collective, literature and history, fact and fiction as well as history and subjectivity. It also tries to show how the problematizing of these dichotomies de-naturalizes received notions of identity, history and nation

This dissertation aims to analyze the novel Estação das Chuvas, by José Eduardo Agualusa, drawing on the assumptions of postcolonial theory and poetics of postmodernism in converging points of the two reviews. The aim is to demonstrate how the narrative fictionalizes the Angola s conflicting conditions, through historiographical metafiction, discussed by Linda Hutcheon. In this case, recovering the facts during the period pre and post-independence national. Estação das Chuvas is a novel built from the dialogue between fiction and history, therefore, the author turns to the past proposing its reconstruction under a critical bias about the discourses and power positions. In this return, issues are addressed for the Portuguese context of post-colonialism and conflicts of the war surrounding the political independence of Angola. Related to these historical periods, the narrative engenders selfreflection on literature and the prospect about the heterogeneous national identity, multifaceted and creole. In this sense, the reading focuses to analysis the resources used in the novel for the fictionalization of history and for the rethinking of social, cultural and political contexts of Angola.
Neste caso, recuperando as situações ocorridas no período do pré e do pós-independência nacional.

Starting from the analysis of a series of Hispanic historical novels and working on the presumption that History and Literature have always been living under a friendly relationship and keeping an intensive dialogue, we intent to point out in this work some of the resources and proceedings which are inherent to the historiographic fiction. In order to do so we set up ourselves the challenge to analyze more specifically under the concepts of the contemporary historical novels, the books El último crimen de Colón (200l), by the Argentinean Marcelo Leonardo Levinas and Colón a los ojos de Beatriz (2000), by the Spanish Pedro Piqueras. Both novels present as character the Admiral Christopher Columbus who is recreated in them through a poetic discourse. The analysis of the mentioned novels intends to point out some of the formal aspects used in their elaboration which turn out as being a historiographic metafiction discourse such as parody, carnivalization, and intertextuality, between others. Those procedures contribute to create new images of the discoverer of America. Using complex procedures of building up images of the discoverer these novels establish a process of questioning the historical truths concerning the man and his acts, calling into question even the historical sources of references which are constantly rewritten. In this way our intention is to establish the differences between the assertions of the historical discourse and the artistic discourse of the poetry under which the novels and the images of the discoverer here analyzed were created. Poetry of hipertextuality is shown to us in relation to the theme of the discovery of America through transtextuality.

Full textLiterary production of the nineties and the early years of the twenty-first century is characterized the release of some literary genres, specifically what Literary Theory defined as being a novel, which do not fit the standards of Classical Literature or the peculiarities of the so-called Best Sellers. Therefore, this thesis has as its object of study the book Leopardos de Kafka, by Moacyr Scliar, which is part of the collection of detective novels Literature and Death, released by the publisher Companhia das Letras. This study aims to show the narrative resources and how they were used in the novel aforementioned, so that we can show that they break the existing boundaries between Classical Literature and Best Sellers and the standards of the traditional detective novel. For this objective to be achieved, the theoretical foundation of this thesis was based, mainly, on studies of the detective novel, done by Boileau and Narcejac (1991), Albuquerque (1979), Reimão (1983, 2005) and others; in researches on Best Sellers, done by Sodré (1978), Caldas (2000) among others and on studies of Historiographic Metafiction, postmodernism and narcissistic narrative, made by Hutcheon (1984, 2002).

Full textThe purpose of this research is to analyze the thin lines that create a rupture in the plans of the narrative, both in the historical process (literary historiography) as its marginal position (historiographic metafiction) in Memorial do Convento of José Saramago. The discourse is ordered in order to consider what was in Memorial do Convento as a means to record the speech itself or the ideological expression of the ruling power, in view of the periodicity of historical fact and measured the impact that such actions resonated with the Portuguese Crown. The establishment of the narrow limits of historical appearance, whose statement reflects more than a simple plot, overcomes the essence of the analysis, assuming a comprehensive study under the conditions of construction of historical discourse, be it on the triad of power in historiography, or the margin metafictional utterances in this constitution. So are characterizations of "beings" discourse tied the dynamics of a historical era, an exhibition of the history; beyond that differentiate these subtle concepts for fiction / reality. Mankind is not exempt from its historical constitution because their brands are indelibly recorded in the literary, as this is in itself a representation of customs, ideas and thoughts, also, the philosophical expression of an era. The theoretical discourse and the weights will give under the foundations of Mikhail Bakthin (2010), Terry Eagleton (2001), Jean-Maurice Lefebve (1980), André Trouche (2006), Maurice Halbwachs (2006), Peter Burke (1992), and Linda Hutcheon (1991). Thus, history is written, narrated, and recreated based on fact. This way, you can have the conviction that past data that have come to us because they are not the facts themselves but representations of events that occurred from the perspective of the statement of a "being" discursive.
A discursividade e as ponderações teóricas dar-se-ão sob as bases de Mikhail Bakhtin (2010), Terry Eagleton (2001), Maurice-Jean Lefebve (1980), André Trouche (2006), Maurice Halbwachs (2006), Peter Burke (1992), e Linda Hutcheon (1991).

Full textLídia Jorges work, started in 1980 with the novel O dia dos prodígios, forms one of the most significant and relevant sets of literary pieces produced in the Portuguese contemporary literature. Among short stories, plays, poems, and books for children, her ten novels so far, published between 1980 and 2011, evolve around several aspects of human nature and of the Portuguese life, especially the ones occurred after the Carnation Revolution (1974) building one of the most important overviews of the Portuguese sociopolitical evolution since then. The research project which originated this dissertation aimed to comprehend which aspects of that overview show more consistently in her novelistic writing, as well as its relation with the historical events of the country, in its democratic period (after 1974). In addition, Lidia Jorges writing presents, throughout her so-far ten novels, a reflection upon the act of writing itself and its relation with History and how it is represented in Portuguese contemporary fiction. Therefore, under the perspective of historiographic metafiction, as defined by Hutcheon (1991) and White (1995), this dissertation provides an analysis of her so-far ten novels, aiming at understanding the writers aesthetic and ideological project, how it consubstantiates and how it develops, since O dia dos prodígios and A noite das mulheres cantoras (2011). This work proposes that Lidia Jorges novels be divided into three different moments: the initial phase, made up of her first novels O dia dos prodígios (1980), O cais das merendas (1982), Notícia da cidade Silvestre (1984), and A costa dos murmúrios (1988); the second moment, in which belong A última dona (1992), O jardim sem limites (1995), and O vale da paixão (1998); and the third moment, which includes O vento assobiando nas gruas (2002), Combateremos a sombra (2007), and A noite das mulheres cantoras (2011). As foundation for developing this study, it was used the image of the needlework as metaphor for building imagery which, as a set and each one by itself, constitute a representative panel of a people, their History, and their relation with their own identity. In short, this work aims to characterize who one of the most important of the Portuguese contemporary literature is and writes.

Full textThe aim of the present dissertation is to understand how fictionalization of the Portuguese colonial war memory occurs in the novels Os Cus de Judas e A costa dos Murmúrios and the strategies used by the authors to express this memory in literary terms. These narratives, atesting the collapse of the old colonialist utopia spread by the portuguese nations narrative, propose a re-evaluation of outdated national values as well as the rhetoric of Salazars regime, which affected profoundly these writers lives. In both narratives, the war experience is reconstructed through the characters testimonials and re-evaluation of their past reminiscences, what gives them a confessional profile. Dismounting the traditional historical narrative by the relativization of widely accepted truths, fiction intends to fill the gaps of the official historical record, seen as a discourse comiited with the dominant classes. The confrontation between the characters individual memory and the legitimized nation's memory, has a libertarian dimension about the past, as it interrupts the dominant logic of the present. The study of the refered novels individualy is concluded with a comparative analisys which stablish similarities and possible discrepancies between their representation of the colonial war memories

Full textThrough the analysis of the novel Return of the Caravels by Antonio Lobo Antunes, this study aims to shed light on the nuances of a post-modern character and his decisions in the context of a liquid and fluid society. The novel, published in 1988, sets an anachronism in which individuals from contemporary times and ancient Portuguese myths naturally coexist in the city of Lisbon. Some of the characters in this novel are the focus of this study, which examines a fragmented society marked by the constant displacement of individuals who compose it. In The Return of the Caravels, eccentricity is the main quality of a man who is lost in time and space. The characters marginalization fuels a continuous attempt to reconstruct the national identity. Additionally, the concepts of laughter and carnivalization serve as tools to deconstruct facts of the Portuguese history that have been regarded as absolute truth. In contemporary society, however, meanings ascribed to those facts have shifted. Thus, this thesis not only highlights the use of humor in the work of Antonio Lobo Antunes but also demystifies names, facts, and the glory of the Portugal Empire. Furthermore, this thesis discusses how, through historiographic metafiction, past events are used for a critical deconstruction of the present society. In short, this intricate anti-epic novel culminates in the dishonored return of Portugals legendary heroes to the city of Lisbon five centuries later

This study investigates, in a comparative perspective, the process of rereading history and reviving the forgotten memory of Francoist Spain by the fictional discourse. Based on the novels Galíndez (1990) and Autobiografía del general Franco (1992) by Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, this research highlights the study of the historiographic metafiction and the role played by these works as aesthetic models for other narratives which would later arise in the Spanish literature, and which would also address the subject of the Spanish Civil War and the Francoism. This study investigates how these historical narratives arise in the context of an aesthetics of Postmodernity, without, however, letting the relativization of history fade the horrors of violence, repression and abuse of power seen in Trujillo‟s and Franco‟s dictatorial governments. Therefore, although these narratives by Manuel Vázquez Montalbán incorporate the typical aesthetic resources of historiographic metafiction, such as metafiction, parody, pastiche, irony, intertextuality and self-reflexivity, they do not abandon the characteristic of claiming for an aesthetics of ethics and an unofficial history of the dictatorships

Full textWhen Agustina Bessa-Luís rewrites History she is guided by the will to show the absence of women in History. Our reading will show the reintroduction of women in Portuguese History through the “descontruction” of its discourse. It’s through questioning the historic objectivity, by the variety of points of view and by an intertextual work with written sources, which reveal that they are human constructions, that the novels become postmodern historiographics metafictions. They elaborate through parody and ambivalence en carnival History, giving a different picture of Portugal. Then the novelist contrasts the official History with a Herstory in order to document the feminine experience and identity in all their multiplicities. The question of memory and phases that are inseparable from woman conditions, reveals a process of identical construction, which gives a report of two ways of feminine inscription into History, one authorize, the other transgressive. Then the principle of masculine domination is questioned through the matter of virility as an impossible model to attain. The men become ambiguous figures, who represent the disorder and decay of society. Fleing but reconciled they reform the masculinity and sign the death of patriarchate. Finally, the last foundations that govern the relation the relation between men and women, and the question of obligatory heterosexuality and the couple, are examined. The writer shows the end of radical otherness between the Other and the One which provokes a resemblance between sexes and questions the notion of the couple. Thus, if the author has shown in her novels, that we can be a man and a woman in different ways, she also shows that in a couple the union is impossible

This document aims at comprehending the formation process of the national awareness as well as the Brazilian identity in Ana Miranda?s works, focusing on the novel Desmundo (1996). To do so, it is taken into account the relevance of the important post-modern concept of ?presenting of the past? in the literary and contemporary texts and the way this concept introduces issues related to the process of construction of the national identity in the novels of historiographic metafiction. Therefore, based upon a descriptive and analytical bibliographical methodology, it is presented theoretical and methodological discussions raised by scholars of post-modernity, formation of awareness and national identity such as: Hutcheon (1991), Baudrillard (1991; 2001), Jameson (2002; 2006), White (2001), Renan (1997), Anderson (2008), Santos (1997), Guibernau (1997), Bhabha (1997; 1998), Hall (2003), Bauman (2005), and so forth. In the analysis of Miranda?s works it is discussed the formation of the Brazilian nation and the national awareness since its genesis ? the colonial period - , which is, broadly speaking, based on transgression, prejudice and discrimination, in a taken-as ?rigorous? classes structure and power abuse. Furthermore, it is examined the parody presence of the foundational myth, as well as the origin of the nation and the Brazilian identity, emphasizing the importance of the individual acknowledgement. To sum up, it can be noticed that the protagonist of the novel can be taken as a standard of representation of this process of identity acknowledgement. Such process is, at the same time, a plural, multifaceted and decentralized one.

Full textThis thesis aims to analyze how the representation of historical events related to the 1147 siege of Lisbon undertaken in the historiographical texts Conquista De Lisboa aos Mouros (1147) by Osberno, Crónica de cinco reis de Portugal by Fernão Lopes, Crónica de Dom Affonso Henriques by Frei António Brandão, and História de Portugal: 1.ª época, desde a origem da monarquia até D. Afonso III by Alexandre Herculano is reconfigured in the ficcional narrative History of the Siege of Lisbon, by Portuguese writer José Saramago. Specifically, we meant to identify, through the study of historical sources concerning the conquest of Lisbon, characteristic features of the official historical record of this historic event and how the its important characters are presented; to determine to what extent Portuguese historiographical texts are intertextualy appropriated by the History of the Siege of Lisbon narrator; to find out what is the narrator's attitude towards the official historical record concerning such historical moment; to verify how the historical characters involved in the siege and conquest of Lisbon are represented in the novel; and to determine to what extent the rewriting of the siege of Lisbon undertaken in the novel is unsanctified and parodic. The novel’s analysis was theoretically guided, on the one hand, for studies related to the various instances of crossings between literary discourse and historical discourse – especially works by historians Hayden White, Paul Ricoeur, Carlo Ginzburg, Saul Friedlander and Dominick LaCapra – and, on the other hand, the assignment of the concept of historiographic metafiction, by Linda Hutcheon, to Saramago’s narrative. After the study of the novel in the light of the historical sources, it was concluded that the History of the siege of Lisbon’s narrator reconfigures the historiographical intertext in different ways, ranging from literal reproduction of excerpts and nominal reference to their authors to the parodic absorption of large blocks of works. These quotes are usually framed by ironic comments of the narrative instance, giving an assessment that isn’t sanctified and is quite disparate from that given by the consulted historical sources to the historical events and its important figures. Another form of intertextual resumption refers to rescue of smaller figures of Portuguese past, as the soldier Mogueime and the Moorish princess Oureana, as well as the Moorish voices silenced by the conquest. Besides questioning the Lusitanian past through intertextual appropriation of sources, Saramago’s narrator questions the historiographical writing methods by fictionalizing the clash of at least two different conceptions of history, represented by the historian and by Raimundo Silva, as well as suggest the reading of the past throught the use of palimpsest technique.
