Abstract : The city of Florianópolis, Santa Catarina´s state capital, has most of the lands on Santa Catarina´s Island and a small part on the continent. The Island is well-known by natural beauty, has historic and cultural peculiarities, which are highlighted by the landscape. The Portuguese colonization left traces over the territorial configuration, and besides Vila of Nossa Senhora do Desterro (known today as downtown), the country part of the Island received several immigrants, mostly from the Azores Islands, with the aim of occupying and defending the territory. Localities like Ribeirão da Ilha, Santo Antônio de Lisboa and Lagoa da Conceição still keep the configuration of the Regal Law established in August 9th of 1747, that determinate the occupation form of the Brazilian lands. During the XX century, the built heritage was quite threatened and since 1980, Public Administration began to preserve municipal historic edifications and sets and categorize those sites as Cultural Preservation Areas (APC). Sites are perceived as part of the historic and cultural landscape of the city. The former process of the colonial space is identified in this research through urban morphology analysis, and a current panorama is presented through images for the purpose of enhancement of the landscape and heritage remaining sets. Maps of the APC were analyzed to enhance the urban plan, occupation, historic edifications and the actual urban law. Images show the composition between the old and recent edifications and its landscape interference. At last, it is concluded that the colonial plan and the urban configuration initially deployed steel keeps fundamental elements to the historic characterization of the studied sites, the landscape formed by edification sets define visual quality and urban ambience enhances the occupation of the sites, known in this research as initial cores.

The doctoral dissertation «The history of derivatives in -ism and -ist in modern Spanish» is a diachronic and synchronic study of the Spanish lexicon based on the morphological evolution of patron -ism and -ist along the twenty editions of the Dictionary of the Spanish language of the Spanish Royal Academy (DRAE).
Research is conducted through a homogeneous solid empirical basis to characterize the history of this vocabulary and its reception in the academic lexicographical tradition. The corpus of historical and linguistic study consists of 3068 records and organized into the software Database of voice in ism and -ist of modern Spanish, which comes in a CD-ROM attached to this work.
The study is divided into three parts. The first one corresponds to an introduction which addresses theoretical and conceptual issues in the area of morphology in the three chapters that comprise it, as the ratio derivative, grammatical patterns, the process of suffixation and the notion of productivity in the word formation processes. It takes place also goes over the concepts of lending and derivative and highlights the problems of demarcation between the two categories. The theoretical bases have been established to analyze the different paradigm interlingual relations between the suffixes -ism and -ist start of the partnership model between the formal and semantic component in the processes of suffixation and a theoretical proposal that integrates the synchronic and diachronic dimension in the study of the lexicon. Account is also a methodology based on linguistic criteria and other external factors, such as the importance of social history and cultural framework for the identification of loans and products.
The second part is for the analysis of the gradual acceptance of both suffixes trained voices and this is indicated by the evolution of morphological paradigm -ism and -ist in the Spanish academic lexicographical tradition. Throughout the five chapters that compose it, describes the main trends of morphological and semantic terms formed with -ism and -ist in modern Spanish and now. Among them, neologism creativity -ism and -ist when both are attached to lexical bases patronymic, especially in the political lexicon-social, artistic and sports.
Finally, in the four chapters of the third section, examines the development of linguistic terminology lexicon as an example of semantic specialization of both morphemes throughout its history.
The dissertation demonstrates that the voices in -ism and -ist of the Spanish lexicon have different backgrounds. The genealogical classification presented, were differentiated from the learned words of Greek or Latin, loans of modern languages (English, French, Italian, etc.) and Spanish derivatives. The distinction between these three sources is not always easy, as in the nineteenth century in what is often the presence of internationals in which it is difficult to determine the native language of the loan. The profitability of -ism and -ist in the current Spanish language is explained, in part, by the adoption and transmission of patterns derived from other languages. Until the eighteenth century, the Romance languages follow the pattern of -ism and -ist of the classics. From the nineteenth century, however, the earliest modern creations take place in the French language and in English and both are the model of -ism and -ist that is transmitted in other languages. Finally, another contribution of the analysis is the semantic extension of the voices formed with the suffix -ism and -ist. Most of the derivatives created evolve internally, as demonstrated over the DRAE issues included in new meanings. The meanings that are incorporated into the microstructure of the terms in -ism and -ist reflect the evolution and progress of our society and Western culture in the last three centuries.

Abstract: Ants are one of the most prominent groups of terrestrial organisms in terms of diversity, relative abundance and biomass. Their importance is due primarily to eusocial behavior combined with complex communication systems. Tropical foliage is rich in renewable feeding sources that promote ant foraging. As some of the most important predators on plants, ants strongly affect the herbivorous insects. The presence of ants on foliages may affect herbivores by two ways: (1) decreasing herbivore individual numbers due to antagonistic interactions (e.g., aggressiveness, predation); (2) providing an enemy-free space for myrmecophilous herbivores (i.e. those living in close associations with ants). The symbiotic interaction between Lepidoptera and ants is widespread but only among two butterfly families (Lycaenidae and Riodinidae). Due to the great importance of myrmecophily for the morphology and biology of these butterflies, it is supposed that much of the evolutionary history of organisms, including diversification, would be explained by their interactions with ants. However, most of the knowledge about the evolutionary ecology of lycaenids is based on studies of well known Palaearctic, Oriental, and Australian species while little is known about the rich Neotropical fauna, which contains nearly 1,200 species. Larvae of Parrhasius polibetes (Stoll) (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) co-occur spatially and temporally with honeydew-producing hemipterans on the host plant Schefflera vinosa (Araliaceae). This study describes new aspects of morphology and natural history of immature stages of P. polibetes, including costs of myrmecophily, host plant selection, and benefits of co-occurrence with hemipteran trophobionts. The development cycle from egg to adult is approximately 36 days, and includes four larval instars. The eggs are laid exclusively on reproductive tissues (flower buds) of the host plants. The larvae are polyphagous, and have already been recorded on 28 plant species from 16 families. Most of the observed host plants of P. polibetes present some kind of liquid reward potentially used by ants (78.57%), either honeydew-producing hemipterans and/or extrafloral nectaries. From the third instar on, the larvae are facultatively tended by more than fifteen ants species in three subfamilies (Formicinae, Myrmicinae, and Ectatomminae), especially ants of the genus Camponotus Mayr. As in other Lycaenidae, interactions between larvae and ants are mediated by a specialized gland (dorsal nectar organ) on the seventh abdominal segment, which produces caloric liquid rewards for ants. Therefore it is expected that the production of these secretions entail costs for the larvae. For P. polibetes, it is shown that Camponotus crassus and Camponotus melanoticus ants differ in the intensity of tending levels to larvae, with C. melanoticus presenting increased tending rates compared to C. crassus. This difference can lead to different costs for the larvae. For instance when tended by C. melanoticus, larvae take longer to pupate. However, the pupal weight and size of adults are not affected by ant tending, suggesting that P. polibetes has compensatory mechanisms to minimize the costs of myrmecophily. This is the first demonstration that specific differences in ant tending may affect performance parameters in an insect trophobiont. In the field, experiments involving the manipulation of ant-treehopper associations on host plants demonstrated that the spatial co-occurrence between P. polibetes caterpillars and honeydew-producing hemipterans is caused by two factors: 1) females are able to detect ant-treehopper associations on foliage before oviposition, and lay eggs in their vicinity; 2) larvae that develop near ant-tended treehoppers survive better than larvae on plants without such association. This effect occurs because the presence of ant-treehopper associations reduces the abundance of potential natural enemies (spiders and parasitoid wasps) of the caterpillars. Moreover, the larvae are more easily found by prospective tending ants that are recruited to nearby honeydew-producing treehoppers. That is, the presence of ant-treehopper associations creates an "enemy-free space" on the host plant, which is exploited by P. polibetes. These results show that a traditional pairwise approach is obviously inappropriate to assess the selective pressures operating within such multi-species systems

The theoretical concept of the following dissertation is related to the direct association between the physical characteristics of the urban elements and the problematic issues within the economic viability of the historical centers. Therefore, this case study intends to detect the role of the morphologic variables in the economic/financial viability of the interventions, by the use of standard model blocks. An information gathering and processing method was created in order to select the standard model blocks that were categorized in a fast and prompt manner by the use of parameters and qualitative coefficients of evaluation, which in turn allowed the selection of the blocks with higher priority status that required intervention. In other words, the standard model blocks that despite of the modifications done along the years, still maintain certain initial morphologic characteristics and require rehabilitation work. In order to analyze the role of the morphologic variables within the economic/financial viability of interventions, one must proceed to access the yield of operations of urban regeneration within the two selected blocks, representing two distinct urban morphologies – Chiado Norte and Baixa Pombalina, and using as comparative indicators the VAL, TIR and PayBack.

Full textTourist activity in the urban public space is a new use that coexists with traditional uses that have been described in neighborhoods that have attractions and heritage values. City tourism is characterized by being consumed and produced in the territory, generating transformations and uses the same context where it develops. The tourist destination has prepared several inputs, services, attractions, dining, they are valued and inhabited by different actors where public space acts as a physical and social container tourism. From a systemic approach and deductive exploratory research examines how tourism is changing public spaces in the city as a physical and dimension (relationship with formal characteristics) Functional (use), identifying, applying and creating new spatial models that explain your operation. Taking as case study units and Yungay The Lastarria neighborhoods in Santiago and Concepcion hill Valparaiso along with owning these securities, (attractive, plant and a singular definition of quarter) also presented different stages of the "Development of a Destination" and further consolidation on the model of the theory of destinations Valls (2003) posed. In turn, different processes or attributes as compact neighborhoods or high or different use that manifest in the formal aspects of each neighborhood are compared and contrasted. The findings of the thesis are related outcomes aimed at generating new neighborhood scale spatial models that explain the operation of tourism by types of "spatial specialization" in this new work scale. It has also permido the comprendimiento on the structure, composition and spatial functioning of heritage neighborhoods that are affected by tourism.

Full textGreat cities are in constant transformation, changing their image and their urban morphology. This process also has an influence on the relation between free and constructed places in their urban tissue. This work proposes to investigate the morphology of empties places inside the blocks, researching the occurrence of these - in Porto Alegre downtown. The work begins studying the concept of these courtyards and then, follows to the search situations at different times in architecture and urbanism history. The cases presented were select from the mainly urban models that had constructed the shape of Porto Alegre Historic Center. One of these models is the traditional city, represented by the design of the old town. The other is the modern city, which brought new relations between buildings and their environments. After presenting the inside blocks situations in two scales - of the cities and architecture - the research gets into the case of Porto Alegre, where inumerous underutilized places are hidden. At this moment, the work passes through an analysis of the urban development of the residential south side of Porto Alegre Historic Center. A chapter about morphological and typological aspects was also necessary for selecting and understanding the potential areas. The ultimate goal was the mapping of the empty spaces inside the blocks at the district - the recognition of intervention possibilities. This work, within the historical and theoretical analysis presented before, contributes with a base for researching about empties spaces inside the blocks.
