Abstract:
Judging by the more than ten companions and guides to the interdisciplinary field of book history published in the last two decades, the death of the book does not seem assured. This article explores recent book historical scholarship that takes energy from the “new” formalisms of the twenty-first century and attends to the range of forms (literary, material, institutional) constitutive of the “book.” In a field reckoning with its silences on Black and Indigenous books, and with its marginalization of books authored and printed by women, definitions of the book are becoming more capacious and nuanced. In the last decade, it is possible to detect two additional “turns” in book history: the first, toward environmental or ecological histories of the book and, the second, toward craft and practice. Experiential approaches to teaching book history are likewise gaining steam as new letterpress studios and book labs are established in college and university settings. Engaging students in critical making and processual research, such book labs allow for embodied learning about the labour and craft of hand-press book production.

Abstract:
History text book is a historiography work for educational purpose. The historiography exposed in the history text book is definitely different from historiography of another scientific history book. The practical purpose of education becomes one of the important goals of composing the history text book. The history understood from history text book can do more than only developing the student’s historical awareness. The historical awareness can be detected in the attitude expressed by the students, such as their sense of nationality, partriotism, unity, willingness to sacrifice, etc. However, the history books composition, including the history text books, cannot avoid the spirit of the period it was written. According to the historiography development in Indonesia, the history text books has been written based on nederlandocentrism, indonesiacentrism, ideologism, and scientific, which are the result of how the spritit of a period affected the history text composition. This research analyse the historiography of history text books that are used in school, especialy in how these history text books appropriately reconstruct historical events with the spirit of a period and how it is composed based on scientific rules of history science.

What role does book illustration play in teaching book history, and how can libraries best support it? This article looks briefly at the lack of interest in book illustration as part of traditional historical bibliography and its increasing importance in the wider field of book history. Using the example of the London Rare Books School, an international summer school, it outlines the nature of the books needed and the extent to which a teaching collection may supply them. It further discusses how and why librarians and teaching staff can collaborate fruitfully to satisfy demand.

Abstract:
Books are written sources of information that contribute to the history of civilization and culture. In certain periods of history books have been banned, destroyed, stolen, and removed for the personal interests of those responsible for their protection. The most effective and widespread way to destroy books has been to burn them. Incidents of book burnings that have happened for various reasons have mostly occurred in situations such as chaos and rebellion. Books have been burned in Athens, China, Jerusalem, England, Sarajevo, and Baghdad. The aim of this study is to examine the historical process and reasons for burning books through the events evoked by Fahrenheit 451 and stories of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Douglas Bradbury (1920-2012). Fahrenheit 451 is a novel in the science fiction genre. Accor ding to Bradbury, science fiction is also a sociological study of the future. The work stands out with the way it deals with social issues and people’s problems. Fahrenheit 451 builds a future based on a simple question: What if books were now just objects that were burned? Based on this question, it is necessary to emphasize that the book was written to prevent the feared situation from happening. Fahrenheit 451 is a book of warning. Bradbury envisions a future with advanced technology to stress that dependence on technology would change the structure of society and how people live as he fears that people will not read books in the future. In this study, information about books and book burning is given, based on the events in the Fahrenheit 451 novel and Fahrenheit 451 stories.

This article considers how markers of place function differently in the print book ecosystem vs. the ebook ecosystem, using books associated with Australia and Western Australia as a case study. Although book historians have mostly failed to engage with ebooks as subject matter, they have considered in some detail the way in which markers of place function in the print book ecosystem. By surveying the scholarly output of book historians working with mapping technologies, it is possible to conclude that, in the print book ecosystem, there exist a handful of markers identifying the following categories: places associated with a book’s setting, its author, its publication, its purchase, and its marketing and publicity. The latter three markers look substantially different in the ebook ecosystem than in the print book ecosystem. Furthermore, in the ebook ecosystem, changes to these three markers can mediate setting and author as markers of place.

Abstract:
The field of neurodiversity offers new ways to think about the history of the book and the history of reading. Because autistic individuals—especially those marked by “classical” symptoms—often report a strong reliance on physical objects and a pronounced tendency toward sensory engagement, their interests coincide with those of book historians and reception critics who investigate the embodied reading experience and the material aspects of the book. Indeed, the textual practices of autistic individuals can resemble those of bibliophiles, who often enjoy touching and smelling books. But autistic textual engagement occasionally takes singular forms, thereby pushing historians of the book into surprising new territory. For example, many classical autists attest to an intense intimacy and intercorporeity with the material book. In so doing they create opportunities for reflecting on the interdependence of the human and nonhuman worlds.

This article describes the Knihověda.cz portal, which represents an essential infrastructure for esearching Czech book history until 1800. The portal includes three parts: its core consists of a atabase comprised of five partial bibliographic databases. This interface contains complete data on printed Bohemica and manuscripts created before 1800 and a modern bibliography for research into Czech book history. The second element of the portal is Map of Printed Production in Bohemia and Moravia up to 1800, which provides interactive access to known printed editions dating back to the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period in the territory of today’s Czech Republic; it also allows for their visualisation according to various criteria. The third element created within the project is the online Encyclopaedia of Books in the Czech Middle Ages and Early Modern Period; its explanation of book history can serve educational purposes at both high schools and universities. A use case study of the history of books from the Rudolfinian period in the Czech lands (1576–1612) supplements the information provided about the portal.

Feather, John P. "Studies in the history of books and the book trade." Thesis, Loughborough University, 1985. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/32889.

Full text
Abstract:
The books and papers offered in this submission are concerned with the history of books and the book trade. Three papers (nos. 1, 2, 3) offer a theoretical and conceptual framework for historical studies of the book. In essence, it is argued that since the book is a societal object it can only be understood in a societal context. Consequently historical studies of books are concerned with far more than physical bibliography, important as that is. The writing, publishing and reading of books are activities which develop out of, and influence the further development of, political and economic systems. The political context of publishing and its legal status is of central concern to the book historian (nos. 12, 14, 15); so too are the mechanisms of sale and distribution (nos. 9, 10, 11, 16) and the relationships between the author who is the primary producer, and the publisher who provides his commercial link with the reader (no. 13). More specifically, the central group of works is concerned with the provincial book trade in 18th-century England. The general study (no. 8) is a wide-ranging survey, largely based on primary sources, of the development and operation of the complex systems which allowed the printed word to permeate English society at every level and in every part of the country between 1700 and 1800. Shorter studies consider some more detailed aspects of the same subject (nos. 4, 6, 7) and survey previous work in the field (no. 5 ).

Abstract:
In the English socio-cultural landscape of the late eighteenth-century, the concept of kindness inhabited a place of importance for its proponents. For kindness was regarded as actions derived from the capacity of humans to do good. Which resulted in the experience and creation of good qualities, situations, and interactions. Kindness’ dictates allowed for its followers to argue the need to encourage better behavioural qualities in others. The dictates of kindness that allowed for this regulating ability came around due to the tightly entwined religious and social tenets of kindness. In the religious sphere, kindness was tied to being Christian through the ‘Law of Kindness.’ The ‘Law of Kindness’ argued that Christians must show kindness to every human being and creature despite everything. Christian theologians argued that kindness is part of humanity, which must be shown through the correct actions, mannerisms, and feelings of everyday life. Kindness fit neatly into the culture of sensibility and its associated philosophies of moral and sensibilities. In the social sphere proponents argued that kindness acted as a means of reinforcing social hierarchy and behavioural boundaries of English society. This occurred through dictates to people showing kindness and infuse kindness into their behaviour that varied according to social position and gender.

Powell, Anne Catherine. ""Miss Rebecca Story's Book" / "Marrying a Minnister"." W&M ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.wm.edu/etd/1550153857.

Full text
Abstract:
"Miss Rebecca Story's Book": A Portal to a Boundless World This paper examines the geographic, literary, and personal connections displayed in a commonplace book of a young girl in the early years of the American republic. A close textual analysis of the commonplace book of Rebecca Story of Marblehead, Massachusetts, in combination with a study of her surrounding environment, offers a methodological approach that simultaneously individualizes and contextualizes a nearly obscured life. This study attempts to reconstruct the world in which she lived, studied, read, and wrote, a world that was inherently informed by her contemporaries' experiences but that also was uniquely her own. The intellectual imagination that created Rebecca Story's world depended on her capacity to envision events, ideas, institutions, and places that superseded the concrete borders of Massachusetts and the abstract borders of gender roles at the turn of the century. an analysis of the literature she read, the people she met, and the places she lived shows Rebecca Story's connections to an expansive network of wider geographic, political, and intellectual worlds in the late eighteenth-century. Creating a record of these linkages that span the Atlantic world and beyond demonstrates how the expansive nature of the early American world could touch even the most provincial lives. "Marrying a Minnister": Esther Burr's Letter-Journal and Identity as a Colonial Minister's Wife This paper is an exploration into the private and public roles of the wives of colonial American clergymen. Although the subject of the colonial minister once received an abundance of scholarly attention, new questions still emerge from surrounding community and familial networks. Using the experience of Esther Edwards Burr as a case study, with her writings in a unique letter-journal format as an evidentiary base, this study identifies the wives of colonial clergymen as occupying a distinct public role within their community as conduits between the private lives of parishioners and the public expressions of their religious life. Defining the specificities of the role of the colonial minister's wife nuances previous explanations of gender roles and public identities, and shows that further exploration into the roles of these women is necessary for fuller comprehension of the gendered communities of early America.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: Although the hackneyed adage "one picture is worth a thousand words" defies proof and begs argument, the basic value of illustration in graphic communications is beyond dispute. Without attempting to put a relative value on illustration as compared with words, we can still be aware of the special effectiveness of images, in accomplishing communication goals. The roots of illustration go hack to prehistoric pictorial art of engraved or painted figures done on stone. The hand print can be interpreted as one of the first attempts at drawing. Prehistoric pictorial art depicted visually what could not be expressed by word or gestures some had religious significance, some the presence of myth, others plainly diadactic, showing daily life, social communication, the magic of the hunt, death, birth, group life and sexual symbolism. Little is known of the vast lapse of time between prehistoric art and the imagery that man devised in the service of developing civilisations at the dawn of history. With steadily increasing demands upon his skills, the artisan's mastery of the tools and materials progressed, so that by the beginning of recorded time he was in possession of the potential elements for printmaking. Yet the importance of communication, as we know it today, only developed centuries later with the motivating force of religion. The print could tell its story to those who could not read or write but could quickly grasp the meaning of a picture.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses Book History. Drawing on the disciplinary fields of ‘analytical bibliography’ and influenced by work in Annales social history, Book History takes as its subject the cultural history and the sociology of print, and also the impact of print on the ‘thought and behaviour of mankind’ from the Gutenberg press to the present day. As books make the complicated journey from the idea to print in all its variant forms, the connections between publishing, cultural, educational, and literary institutions—and the individuals involved in these—are crucial to understanding how they emerge in print, how they are used, how they circulate, and what they mean. The chapter thus addresses the following areas of importance to the social and material histories of the Anglophone novel to 1950: the ‘glocalized’ geographies of print and trade; newspapers and local literary cultures; colonial editions; libraries, readers and writers; trade and copyright legislation.

The article reveals a number of aspects of research in the field of auxiliary historical disciplines by Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor R.A. Simonov (1929–2023). The author shows that the scientist has demonstrated the unpro- ductiveness of highly specialized knowledge when it is aimed at absolute self- sufficiency and isolation from other, even related sciences. Only the interaction of various auxiliary historical disciplines is relevant – chronology and metro- logy, paleography and emblematics, numismatics and heraldry, etc.

Jiang, Xiaowei, and John Cherry. History and Hydraulics of Flowing Wells. The Groundwater Project, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.21083/cpet1503.

Full text
Abstract:
Because flowing wells are spectacular visual evidence of groundwater occurrence, they became the impetus for both qualitative and quantitative groundwater science. The pursuit of answers to fundamental questions generated by flowing wells in confined aquifers bounded by aquitards moved the science forward for more than a century until pumping became the main form of groundwater development. Since the turn of the 20th century, flowing wells in unconfined aquifers were an impetus for the paradigm shift from aquitard-bound flow to cross-formational flow driven by topography. In this book, the histories of drilling flowing wells in France, the US, Canada, and China—which led to important findings on hydraulics of flowing wells—are summarized. The occurrence of flowing wells in confined aquifers, unconfined aquifers and semi-confined aquifers are demonstrated by showing the corresponding forms of topography-driven groundwater flow from recharge to discharge areas in different aquifers. This book introduces classic models of steady-state and transient discharge rates from flowing wells without considering basinal groundwater flow fields as proposed by Dupuit (1863), Jacob and Lohman (1952), and Hantush (1959). Recent models of transient and steady-state discharge rates of flowing wells that consider basinal groundwater flow fields—which led to a clear understanding of sources of water derived in flowing wells—are also introduced. By providing a comprehensive description of flowing wells, this book is useful not only to understanding hydraulics of flowing wells, but also to understanding the history of groundwater science.

Bernstetter, Armin. The Digital Lab Book (software). GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.3289/sw_7_2024.

Full text
Abstract:
The Digital Lab Book is a provenance visualization and management tool for immersive and collaborative cisual analytics. It acts as a direct companion to the Virtual Fieldwork Unreal Engine application providing a web-application that tracks interaction in the Unreal Engine. Each interaction in Unreal Engine triggers committing a visualization state to the DLB. The interaction history can be managed similar to a git repository by creating branches and stepping back to previous states in a visualized repository graph. The visualization states can be annotated, and organized in an internal mind-map tool. The resulting provenance repository can be exported as an archive and imported again, leading to simple shareability and thus better reproducibility of interactive sensemaking workflows.

Kenes, Bulent. Claiming the People’s Past: Populist Politics of History in the Twenty-First Century. European Center for Populism Studies (ECPS), 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.55271/br0015.

Full text
Abstract:
The book examines the populist use of history through a blend of case studies and thematic analyses spanning various geographical and socio-cultural contexts. It highlights how populist politics often adopt an anti-elitist stance, particularly against academic historians. Populists tend to favor simplified, decontextualized, or ambiguous historical narratives infused with strong emotional appeals—such as pride, anger, fear, or nostalgia—over the rigorous, evidence-based approach of professional historiography. Despite populism’s strong orientation toward the past, the academic exploration of its relationship with history has been relatively sparse so far. This book makes a notable contribution to addressing and bridging that gap.

Schmidt, Aaron, Dawn Morrison, Kayley Schacht, Susan Enscore, and Adam Smith. “One grand, glorious national cause” : a cultural geography of the Veterans Affairs built environment. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/49426.

Full text
Abstract:
The United States government has a long history of providing medical, financial, and burial benefits to American Veterans. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and its predecessor agencies constructed much of the built environment that served as a conduit for these benefits. Today, the VA manages and maintains more than 15,000 buildings and structures to serve the Veteran community. To facilitate the transfer of property rights of its vacant and underutilized properties and ensure compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation issued a Program Comment at the request of the VA on 26 October 2018. The Program Comment mitigation requires the VA to produce a readily accessible public-benefit document of interest to a wide audience comprised of Veterans and lay people. This book provides that public-benefit document through a cultural geography of the built environment of VA facilities. This book focuses on the sense of place developed by Veterans toward VA facilities and covers three generational periods as defined by the VA: post–Civil War through World War I, World War I through the end of World War II, and post–World War II through 1958.

Schmidt, Garbi. ECMI Minorites Blog. On Hyphenated Identities. European Centre for Minority Issues, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.53779/dkis5412.

Full text
Abstract:
In the spring of 2021, the Danish Borderland Association published the book Danskerne findes i mange modeller – portrætter af 15 unge med bindestregsidentitet by Marlene Fenger-Grøndahl. The book consists of fifteen interviews with young so-called cultural ambassadors of the Borderland Association, as well as essays on the history of the Danish-German borderland and the concept of a hyphenated identity that the young respondents refer to. In minority research, the concept of a hyphenated identity is both used and contested. However, the interviews underline that the concept can serve as an important backdrop for the empowerment of young people with minority identities. This ECMI Minorites Blog entry is written by Garbi Schmidt, professor of Cultural Encounters at Roskilde University.

Schmidt, Alex P. Defining Terrorism. ICCT, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.19165/2023.3.01.

Full text
Abstract:
This report summarizes, and builds on, some of the author’s previous conceptual work. It approaches the definition of terrorism from five angles: (i) by focusing on the history of terrorism; (ii) by focusing on the psychology of ‘terror’ (the threat and fear factor); (iii) by focusing on forms of political violence other than terrorist violence; (iv) by focusing on the terrorist act; and (v) by focusing on the terrorist. Subsequently it addresses the question who should have definition power? The author looks at how terrorists, victims of terrorism, religious authorities, mass and social media, national governments, the United Nations, and members from academia have tried to define terrorism. In his conclusion, the author pleads for a narrow definition of terrorism. The main body of the text is followed by a sample of definitions of terrorism and a bibliography of books, book chapters, and articles on the subject.

Full text
Abstract:
Professor M. Zhytaryuk’s review is about a book scientific novelty – a monograph by Professor M. Tymoshyk «Ukrainian journalism in the diaspora: Great Britain. Monograph. K.: Our culture and science, 2020. 500 p. – il., Them. pok., resume English, German, Polish.». Well-known scientist and journalism critic, Professor M. S. Tymoshyk, wrote a thorough work, which, in terms of content, is a combination of a monograph, a textbook and a scientific essay. This book can be useful for both students and practicing journalists or anyone interested in the history of the Ukrainian diaspora, Ukrainian journalism and Ukrainian culture. The author dedicated his work to Stepan Yarmus from Winnipeg, Canada – archpriest, journalist, editor, professor. As the epigraph to the book were taken the words of Ivan Bagryany: «Our press, born under the sword of Damocles of repatriation», not only survived and survived to this day, but also showed a brilliant ability to grow and develop. It was shown that beggars that had come to the West without money at heart can and know how to act so organized. It was also an example of how a modern «enbolshevist» and «denationalized» by the occupier man person is capable of a combined mass action».
