Abstract:
The 1950s and 1960s were a lively time for mathematics education in the United States, but that era has now become sufficiently remote that many teachers have only vague or secondhand knowledge of the issues and personalities involved. The phrase “new math,” which is often used to designate the reforms of that period, has never been very informative in itself, and it continues to generate misinformed commentary. Some of this commentary has been promulgated by critics of programs and textbooks associated with the NCTM's Standards, which these critics have dubbed the “new, new math” (Gardner 199

This dissertation examines the history of three early computer programs that were designed to prove mathematical theorems: The Logic Theory Machine, the Program P, and the Automated Reasoning Assistant, all developed between 1955 and 1975. I use these programs as an opportunity to explore ways in which mathematical knowledge and practice were transformed by the introduction of modern computing. The prospect of automation generated disagreement about the character of human mathematical faculties like intuition, reasoning, and understanding and whether computers could be made to possess or parti

Senior Thesis at CMC is often described institutionally as the capstone of one’s undergraduate education. As such, I wanted my own to accurately capture and reflect how I’ve grown as a student and mathematician these past four years. What follows is my attempt to distill lessons I learned in mathematics outside the curriculum, written for incoming undergraduates and anyone with just a little bit of mathematical curiosity. In it, I attempt to dispel some common preconceptions about mathematics, namely that it’s uninteresting, formulaic, acultural, or completely objective, in favor of a dynamic
