Accurate and realistic assessment of the performance of columns in general, and those in critical locations that may cause progressive failure of the entire structure, in particular, is significantly important. This performance is affected by the load history, pattern, and intensity. Current design code does not consider the effect of load pattern on the load and displacement capacity of columns. A primary research sponsored by Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) was conducted as the initial step of the present study (No. K-TRAN: KSU-11-5). The main goals of the KDOT project were: (1) investigation of new KDOT requirements in terms of the column design procedure and detailing and their consistency with AASHTO provisions; (2) verification of the KDOT assumptions for the plastic hinge regions for columns and bridge piers, (3) provide assessment of the load capacity of the existing columns and bridge piers in the light of the new specifications and using the new load demand as in the new provisions; and finally recommendations for columns and bridge piers that do not meet the new requirements. A conclusion was drawn that there is a need for conducting more studies on the realistic performance of Reinforced Concrete (RC) sections and columns. The studies should have included performance of RC members under various loading scenarios, assessment of columns capacity considering confinement effect provided by lateral reinforcement, and investigation on performance of various monotonic and cyclic material models applied to simulate the realistic performance. In the study reported here, monotonic material models, cyclic rules, and plastic hinge models have been utilized in a fiber-based analytical procedure, and validated against experimental data to simulate behavior of RC section under various loading scenarios. Comparison of the analytical predictions and experimental data, through moment–curvature and force–deflection analyses, confirmed the accuracy and validity of the analytical algorithm and models. The performance of RC columns under various axial and lateral loading patterns was assessed in terms of flexural strength and energy dissipation. FRP application to enhance ductility, flexural strength, and shear capacity of existing deficient concrete structures has increased during the last two decades. Therefore, various aspects of FRP-confined concrete members, specifically monotonic and cyclic behavior of concrete members confined and reinforced by FRP, have been studied in many research programs, suggesting various monotonic models for concrete confined by only FRP. Exploration of existing model performances for predicting the behavior of several tested specimens shows a need for improvement of existing algorithms. The model proposed in the current study is a step in this direction. FRP wrapping is typically used to confine existing concrete members containing conventional lateral steel reinforcement (tie/spiral). The confining effect of lateral steel reinforcement in analytical studies has been uniquely considered in various models. Most models consider confinement due to FRP and ignore the effect of conventional lateral steel reinforcement. Exploration of existing model performances for predicting the behavior of several tested specimens confined by both FRP and lateral steel shows a need for improvement of existing algorithms. A model was proposed in this study which is a step in this direction. Performance of the proposed model and four other representative models from literature was compared to experimental data from four independent databases. In order to fulfill the need for a simple, yet accurate analytical tool for performance assessment of RC columns, a computer program was developed that uses relatively simple analytical methods and material models to accurately predict the performance of RC structures under various loading conditions, including cyclic lateral displacement under a non-proportionally variable axial load (Esmaeily and Xiao 2005, Esmaeily and Peterman 2007). However, it was limited to circular, rectangular, and hollow circular/rectangular sections and uniaxial lateral curvature or displacement. In this regards, a computer program was developed which is the next generation of the aforesaid program with additional functionality and options. Triangulation of the section allows opportunity for cross-sectional geometry. Biaxial lateral curvature/displacement/force combined with any sequence of axial load provides opportunity to analyze the performance of a reinforced concrete column under any load and displacement path. Use of unconventional reinforcement, such as FRP, in lateral as well as longitudinal direction is another feature of this application.

This dissertation investigates aesthetics of African design and decoration in the work of major contemporary artists of African descent who address heritage, history, and life experience. My project focuses on the work of three representative contemporary artists, African American artists Kehinde Wiley and Nick Cave, and Ghanaian artist El Anatsui. Their work represents practices and tendencies among a much broader group of painters and sculptors who employ elaborate textures and designs to express drama and emotion throughout the Black Atlantic world. I argue that extensive patterning, embellishment, and ornamentation are employed by many contemporary artists of African descent as a strategy for reinterpreting the art historical canon and addressing critical social issues, such as war, devastation of the earth's environment, and lack of essential resources for survival in many parts of the world. Many artworks also present historical revisions that reflect the experience of Black peoples who were brought to the Americas through the transatlantic slave trade, lived under colonial rule, or witnessed aspects of post-colonial struggle. The disorderliness of intersecting designs could also symbolize gaps in memory and traumas that will not heal. They reflect the manner in which Black Atlantic peoples have pieced together ancestral histories from a patchwork of sources. Polyrhythmic decoration enables their work to act as vessels of experience, allowing viewers to bring together multiple histories and social references.

Full textHistoric campgrounds on National Forest Service lands are a key location where the public experiences the intersection of natural and cultural resources. In the Pacific Northwest Region, the majority of historic Forest Service campgrounds date from the Civilian Conservation Corps/New Deal era of the 1930s; however, some existed previous to this period. Overall, these campgrounds were envisioned, designed, and evolved in an era of rapid technological change, when increasing industrialization, urbanization, and rural accessibility facilitated a cultural need for both preservation of and accessibility to natural resources. In order to understand how these campgrounds evolved over time, existing campground conditions were documented using a case-study approach, based on historic integrity, range of geographic accessibility, and historical data availability. In order to understand what changes have occurred over time, existing and historic conditions were compared. Based on the results, broad cultural landscape stewardship recommendations are made.

Ricciardelli, Taryn. "The hinterlands of Town Creek| A settlement pattern study of the Mississippian occupation of the North Carolina Piedmont." Thesis, East Carolina University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1598206.
Full textThe Town Creek mound site, located in Montgomery County, North Carolina, is classified as Mississippian based on the archaeological evidence for intensive maize agriculture, the presence of complicated stamped ceramics, and the presence of an earthen platform mound. In my research, I studied hinterland sites within a 40-km radius of the mound site to determine how Mississippian settlement patterns in the surrounding region changed through time. I used ceramic analysis and the presence and absence of diagnostic artifacts to create an occupational history of hinterland sites. I also used spatial analysis to delineate polity boundaries and compare spatial patterns to others established in the region. When ceramic and spatial data were combined, patterns emerged suggesting that fewer hinterland sites were occupied during the height of Town Creek’s occupation, and more hinterland sites were occupied when Town Creek’s population was dwindling. These patterns suggest that as people moved away from Town Creek, they were relocating within the mound site’s immediate vicinity. Spatial analysis also showed a break in hinterland sites at 18 km during all of Town Creek’s occupation, indicating that the administrative center at Town Creek had an influence of at least 18 km.

, a Mediterranean highland settlement in Southwestern Turkey. The thesis'
basic assumption is the environmental coherence of the traditional rural culture. Environmental aesthetics provides the conceptual basis through which architectural elements of the environmental coherence are investigated. Environmental aesthetics enhances the inclusive conceptions of "
environment"
as an integral whole merging nature with culture and "
aesthetics"
as an integrated realm of perceptual engagement with environment. The integrative perspectives of environmental aesthetics unify the phenomenological approach with the concepts of "
tectonic syntax"
and "
pattern language,"
which have been raised by previous studies of the traditional built environment. This integral conceptual framework is used to derive the conceptual tools. Environmental coherence between the various scale levels of the rural settlement ranging from architectural detail to settlement pattern defines "
aesthetics of continuity."
The conceptual tools, which are the "
tectonic joint,"
the organic interface and the environmental armature, serve as the successive scale levels on which the architectural elements of the "
aesthetics of continuity"
are analyzed. This framework is applied to Ü
rü

for identifying the spatial articulations of environment as multileveled patterns illustrating culture-specific solutions to contextual problems. Hence, the patterns are reconsidered as the aspects of architectural enculturation. The thesis'
proposal for an environmental representation of the settlement concretizes the patterns of integration between the rural architectural tradition and environment and explains the aesthetics of continuity between nature and culture. The intended contribution of the case study is a new theoretical approach generally applicable to the rural settlements.

Ubiquitous computing aims to make tasks that depend on computing, transparent to users, thus, providing resources and services anytime and anywhere. One of the key factors to the development this type of application is the matter of Context Awareness, which enables an application to adjust its operation as the situation in which the user is. Thus, several authors have presented formal definitions of what is a context and how to represent it. With the development of systems that use Context information previously stored, databases have emerged that store Historical Contexts captured over time. Many researchers have studied different ways to analyzes this data. This paper addresses a specific type of data analysis in historical contexts, which is the discovery and monitoring of patterns in Context Histories. For this purpose, a model called CHSPAM (Context History Pattern Monitoring) is proposed, that allows the discovery of patterns in Context History databases and keeps track of these patterns to monitor their evolution over the time. Ubiquitous computing aims aim to integrate information technology perfectly into people's daily lives, so that people are aided by technological resources in the real world, proactively, while performing daily activities. One of the fundamental aspects for the development of this type of application is the issue of Context Awareness, which allows an application to adapt its operation according to the context in which the user is. With the development of systems that use information from previously stored contexts, databases have emerged that store captured Context Histories over time. Many researchers have studied different ways to perform analyzes on these data. This work addresses a specific type of data analysis in context histories, which is the search for sequential patterns. With this purpose, a model called CHSPAM (Context History Pattern Monitoring) is proposed that allows the discovery of sequential patterns in Context Historical databases, making use of existing data mining techniques. The main contributions of this work are the use of a generic representation for the storage of contexts allowing its application in multiple domains. Another contribution is that the model monitors the patterns discovered over time, storing history pattern evolution. A prototype of the model was implemented, and from it three experiments were carried out for its validation. The first experiment was used to evaluate the functionalities and services offered by CHSPAM and was based on simulated data. In the second experiment, the model was used in a prediction application and the use of monitored sequential patterns provided accuracy improvement on predictions when compared to the use of common patterns. Finally, in the third experiment, CHSPAM was used as a component of a learning object recommendation application and the application was able to recommend objects related to students’ interests based on monitored sequential patterns extracted from users’ session history.

Full textThe aim of this dissertation is to analyse the Constitution of the Russian Federation passed by referendum on 12 December 1993, in its various contexts of production. Indeed, this legal text is both the result of a short history and of a long history, of an intra-elite conflict and of an amount of representations, inherited from the past and rebuilt at the end of the 80’s and at the beginning of the 90’s. We chose to attempt to reconstruct what has been the « épistémè », the legal and political representations of the key actors of the constitutional discussions. This choice made it necessary to recount the most significant facts and conceptions of the legal and institutional history of Tsarist Russia and Soviet Union. This approach is found in the first part of this dissertation, « Perestroika as a recipient, a revolution and a model ». It appears that despite the existence of liberal traditions and proto-parliamentary institutions, the dominant tradition, granted as such by the drafters of the Russian Constitution, is basically anti-juridical and authoritarian. It is in this context that the actors of the first Russian Republic tried to use foreign patterns (mostly American and French) and the theoretical patterns of Constitutional law (parliamentary regime and presidential regime) in order to create the new institutional design. The second part of the dissertation, « The redaction process of the Constitution of 1993 », deals with short history, that is years the 1990-1993 during which two sides challenged each other, both on a political and on constitutional grounds. The side of the Congress of People’s Deputies led by its President, Ruslan Khasbulatov, promoted a project of Parliament domination, while the side of the President of the Federation promoted a project of President domination. On both sides, empirical and theoretical patterns of constitutional law were exploited and their true meanings betrayed. Between these two sides, the Constitutional Commission created by the Congress of People’s Deputies, through its several drafts, tried to find a balanced design on the basis of foreign patterns and of the science of constitutional law. Finally, on the side of the President there was success in making its conceptions prevail, within a Constitutional Conference organized in June 1993, but mainly through its political victory of October 1993. The text passed on 12 December 1993, very much in favor of the Presidency, can be considered as the heir of this conflict, but as well partly as the heir of Russian and Soviet political traditions

Full textWith its vast but so human proportions, Shakespeare’s theatre seems to confirm the Pythagorean conception that “all is number”. Indeed, the history of number, which combines with the multiple, the multiform and the innumerable, has been absorbed into Shakespeare’s theatre. It is apt to transform the presence of numbers, which are sometimes unobtrusive sometimes ostentatious, into a story. The synchronous history of number and the innumerable, and conversely number and the innumerable as story meet in Shakespeare’s works. Numbers abound, namely the number of lines, the number of authors, the succession of reigns, of kings and queens and infinite numbers of people… The profusion of words and devices that are related to number is imposing. Lists are dizzying. Numbers are innumerable. Number shapes patterns but there may be tension between this pattern and the irregularities that are their final manifestation. The unruly movements of the crowd, of the multitude, that is easily moved, that is enthusiastic or may rebel, are channeled by the established power. The dark side of this study concerns the repressive state apparatus and the relationship with the theatre. This study shows that the inhuman is also no doubt inherent in the very notion of number and the innumerable. It is in the space of the numberless, without number, in the premise of the innumerable, that the works of “myriad-minded” Shakespeare reside. The sciences have penetrated Shakespeare’s works, which have been thought to undergo the influence of the innumerable worlds of Brunian cosmology. The innumerable lies somewhere between the demotic and the esoteric. The conception of a mystique of numbers, however, cannot be linked to the conception of Shakespeare’s universal popular genius. On account of the coincidentia oppositorum, of the extraordinary capture of the essence of the past, of the present and of the future, Shakespeare’s works admirably lend themselves to a process that entails a sense of loss
