Durand, Antonin. "Le mathématicien et le politique : science et vie politique en Italie de 1839 à la veille de la Grande Guerre." Thesis, Paris, EPHE, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015EPHE4067.

Abstract:
From the first congress of Italian scientists in 1839 to the eve of World War I, many Italian mathematicians took part to the political life of their country. This PhD deals with the different modalities of this involvement: Italian national movement, which results in the scientific field in a specific shape of patriotism in a context of Italian unification, is one aspect. But I intend to draw a more general analysis of the way the position of a mathematician can be used in the political field to found a legitimating discourse, some kind of expertise, or to claim a specific way to consider political questions. In order to do so, I will need to consider circulations between mathematical and political fields with tools the history of intellectuals: I will thus compare the strategies of advancement in those two fields, analyze how the conflicts are transposed and how the actors divide their time between their different activities. So I intend to understand how the transformations of the Italian political life around national unification made possible the emergence of new politicians, to assess their reception in political and academic worlds and the way their double belonging influenced their practice as mathematicians

This research has as objective the study of the historic way of the Mathematics scholar subject constitution to High School, at Gustavo Capanema Reform, time in which was made the reorganization of the Mathematics teachings to this teaching level and the rising of the Mathematic didactic books collection entitled Matemática 2º Ciclo , to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades, edited to assist the new Mathematics syllabus of these courses, by the authors Euclides Roxo, Roberto Peixoto, Haroldo Lisbôa da Cunha and Cesar Dacorso Netto, also known as the 4 authors Collection. This collection standardizes the structure of other Mathematics didactic collections books contributing to the teaching standardization and the Mathematics scholar subject constitution. This investigation uses mainly the theoric basis of André Chervel, Alain Choppin and Roger Chartier, the legislation related to this Reform and Mathematic didactic books edited to High School courses, whose authors were consulted by High School students (Classic and Scientific), in the scholar library of the current Sao Paulo State School, in the period between 1943 to 1961, as mainly research sources. The main question of this investigation is: How the Mathematics didactic books from the collection entitled Matemática 2º Ciclo , by Euclides Roxo, Roberto Peixoto, Haroldo Lisbôa da Cunha and Cesar Dacorso Netto, as known as the 4 authors Collection, written to High School courses, in the Capanema Reform period, contributed to the Mathematic scholar subject constitution, to this teaching level? This research seeks to give a contribution to the History of Scholar Mathematics and to the Mathematic Education in Brazil
Abdalla, Mohamad, and n/a. "The Fate of Islamic Science Between the Eleventh and Sixteenth Centuries: A Critical Study of Scholarship from Ibn Khaldun to the Present." Griffith University. School of Science, 2004. http://www4.gu.edu.au:8080/adt-root/public/adt-QGU20040618.091027.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to comprehensively survey and evaluate scholarship, from Ibn Khaldun (1332-1406) to the present, on the fate of Islamic science between the eleventh and sixteenth-centuries, and to outline a more adequate scholarly approach. The thesis also assesses the logic and empirical accuracy of the accepted decline theory, and other alternative views, regarding the fate of Islamic science, and investigates the procedural and social physiological factors that give rise to inadequacies in the scholarship under question. It also attempts to construct an intellectual model for the fate of Islamic science, one that examines the cultural environment, and the interactions among different cultural dynamics at work. Drawing upon Ibn Khaldun's theory and recent substantial evidence from the history of Islamic science, this thesis also entails justifying the claim that, contrary to common assumptions, different fates awaited Islamic science, in different areas, and at different times. For the period of Ibn Khaldun to the present, this thesis presents the first comprehensive review of both classical and contemporary scholarship, exclusively or partially, devoted to the fate of Islamic science for the period under study. Based on this review, the thesis demonstrates that, although the idea that Islamic science declined after the eleventh century has gained a wide currency, and may have been established as the preferred scholarly paradigm, there is no agreement amongst scholars regarding what actually happened. In fact, the lexicon of scholarship that describes the fate of Islamic science includes such terms as: "decline," "decadence," "stagnation," "fragmentation," "standstill," and that Islamic science "froze," to name just a few. More importantly, the study shows that six centuries ago, the Muslim historian Ibn Khaldun provided a more sophisticated and complex theory regarding what happened to Islamic science, which was not utilised except in the work of two scholars. The thesis tests the adequacy of the different claims by applying them to four case studies from the history of Islamic science, and demonstrate that evidence for specified areas shows that different fates awaited Islamic science in different areas and times. In view of the fact that Ibn Khaldun's theory is six centuries old, and that evidence of original scientific activity beyond the eleventh century emerged in the 1950s, what would one expect the state of scholarship to be? One would expect that with the availability of such evidence the usage of "decline" and other single-faceted terms would begin to disappear from the lexicon of scholarship; scholars would show awareness, and criticism, of each other's work; and development of more and more sophisticated concepts would emerge that would explain the fate of Islamic science. The thesis demonstrates that this did not happen. It argues that the key problem is that, after Ibn Khaldun, there was a centuries-long gap, in which even excellent historians used simple, dismissive terms and concepts defined by a limited, but highly persistent, bundle of interpretative views with a dominant theme of decline. These persistent themes within the scholarship by which Islamic science is constructed and represented were deeply embedded in many scholarly works. In addition, many scholars failed to build on the work of others; they ignored major pieces of evidence; and, in most cases, they were not trying to discern what happened to Islamic science but were referring to the subject as part of another project. Thus, in this corpus of scholarship, one that contains the work of some of the 'best' scholars, the myth of the decline remains not only intact but also powerful. Convinced of its merit, scholars passed it on and vouched for it, failing to distinguish facts from decisions based on consensus, emotion, or tradition. There are very few noteworthy cases where Islamic science is being represented in ways that do not imply negativity. There are also some few narratives that present more complex descriptions; however, even Ibn Khaldun's complex theory, which is arguably the most adequate in the scholarship, is non-comprehensive. Some modern scholars, like Saliba and Sabra, present a challenge to the common argument that Islamic science suffered a uniform decline. However, in the absence of any significant challenges to the common claims of the fate of Islamic science, particularly that of decline, it is evident that, at the very least, the scholarship seems to offer support to the work of discourses that construct the fate of Islamic science in single-faceted, simplistic and reductive terms.

Abstract:
The present work deals with the literary-theoretical work of the Petrograd Formalists - those who participated in the OPOiaZ in the 1910s and early 1920s - with a focus on that oflurii Tynianov. It attempts to unpack the representation of their literary-theoretical work as 'science' [nauka] by exploring how that category was constructed in dialogue with their evolving conception of literature. It is argued in the first chapter that, for the duration of their project, they conceptualized the 'language of nauka' - and their own prose by association - in accordance with the laws of their theory of language. It is argued in the second chapter that, as the Formalists developed a theory of literary history as an endless succession of 'revolutions' in the period 1919- 24, they tried to make their theorization of that process take a correspondingly revolutionary form, one in which the sciences of nature and those of history would become one. It is argued in the third chapter that, as the Formalists came to theorize the connection between literature and life in the period 1924-30, they practised a new 'type' of nauka in the form of the authorial collection of articles, one in which their own work was historicized in a 'literary' manner. It is concluded that, for the OPOiaZ, nauka came into being as a function of its object: as the Formalists transformed their conception of literature, their realization of nauka was correspondingly transformed. The conclusion then problematizes the categorization of Formalism as a purely 'scientific', extra-'literary' movement, since emphasis is placed on their authorship of that categorization, and raises broader questions about the origin of modem 'literary theory'.

Students today need to be taught not only the real life context of their mathematics lessons but also the historical context of the theory behind their mathematics lessons. Using history to teach mathematics, makes your lessons not only interesting but more meaningful to a large percentage of your students as they are interested in knowing the who, how and why about certain rules, theorems, formulas that they use everyday in class. Students are captivated by learning the history behind mathematicians, rules, etc. and therefore can link the lesson to something in history and a concept. Even learning the mathematics behind historical events motivates and interests them. They cannot get enough!

Abstract:
Cyrus Ingerson Scofield portrayed himself as a decorated Confederate veteran, a successful lawyer, and a Bible scholar who was providentially destined to edit his 1909 dispensational opus, The Scofield Reference Bible. This thesis offers a multilayered image of Dr. Scofield's life by considering political and regional influences, racial and gender attitudes, and religious views he encountered between 1861 and 1921. This study includes an examination of his participation in the American Civil War including his desertion of the South in 1862. After becoming a Union loyalist, Scofield excelled as a lawyer and Republican politician before corruption rumors radically altered his life in 1874. By 1882, he emerged as a minister in Dallas, Texas where he built an image as a Confederate veteran and Bible scholar. Drawing on Scofield's manuscripts and other sources, this study shows the self-aggrandizing Bible editor consistently adapted his life and rhetoric to his regional and social circumstances.

Bray, Robyn. "'A scholar, a gentleman, and a Christian' : John Josias Conybeare (1779-1824) and his 'Illustrations of Anglo-Saxon Poetry' (1826)." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2013. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/4709/.

Abstract:
This thesis contextualises the life and work of John Josias Conybeare (1779-1824), one of the first to hold the Rawlinson chair of Anglo-Saxon at the University of Oxford, and considers his contribution to the development of Old English studies as a discipline. I argue that he has been unduly marginalised as a result of posthumous criticism that has failed to acknowledge the extent of his contribution to Old English scholarship. Part I of the thesis considers this issue from the perspective of John Josias himself, setting him in the context of the period in which he lived and the longer continuum of Old English studies as a whole. It also reconstructs what is known of his associates and friends, illustrating that he occupied a central position among the literati of his day alongside figures such as Thomas Gaisford (1779-1855), Joseph Hunter (1783-1861), Robert Southey (1774-1843), and Sharon Turner (1768-1847). Part II focuses on Illustrations of Anglo-Saxon Poetry (1826), the scholar’s most well-known and significant contribution to Old English studies, which was published posthumously by John Josias’ brother, William Daniel (1787-1857), and widow, Mary (1790-1848). This section traces the composition of the book from its first conception through to its final publication and critical reception, using previously unpublished correspondence to disambiguate the contribution of the author from that of his editors. This is followed by an examination of John Josias’ ability as an early editor of Old English, which critically evaluates some of his transcriptions, translations, and interpretations as they appeared in Illustrations of Anglo-Saxon Poetry, with particular attention to his work on Widsith and the Exeter Book. Part III contains transcripts of unpublished correspondence and other documents that provide details about John Josias’ life and, in particular, about the preparation and posthumous publication of his Illustrations of Anglo-Saxon Poetry. This thesis, which brings together genealogical, scholarly, and archival materials, constitutes the first comprehensive study of his life and work. My reassessment of his scholarship concludes that John Josias in fact made a substantial and influential contribution to the discipline, deserving of greater recognition today.

Abstract:
The objective of this historical research was to investigate the educational festivals and their role in the process of the constitution of a public and national educational system as well as their contribution to the dissemination of the school and the republican society idealistic values during the 1890-1930 period. The term scholar culture consists of a nuclear concept for the development of the investigation of the educational parties and festivals since these may be conceived as one of the aspects that have integrated and still integrate the scholar culture. The concept of scholar culture was used in accordance with the conception created by Dominique Julia (2001, p. 10) as being a set of rules that define what to teach and what behaviour to promote, and a set of procedures that permit the transmission of this knowledge and the incorporation of these behaviours; rules and procedures aimed at the achievement of goals that may vary with time (religious, sociopolitical or simply socialization goals). The educational parties expressed in an exemplar way the scholar culture of such period for at the same time they followed rules, externally stablished by governors who used to stipulate the days to be celebrated and the pattern of the festival to guarantee the teaching of certain behaviour and knowledge, they also incorporated practices coordenated with educational and significant objectives of the school. Other authors, as André Chervel (1990) and Viñao Frago (1996), researchers of the scholar culture, have also been used to fundament the study from the theoretical standpoint. The study has been supported by a documental base that was composed by educational magazine texts published in São Paulo, such as: A Eschola Publica (1895-1897), Revista de Ensino (1902-1919), Revista Escolar (1925-1927), as well as reports from school inspectors published in the Anuários de Ensino do Estado de São Paulo (1907-1926), compiled at the main libraries of São Paulo. The study of the educational parties and festivals permited to know which were the concepts of teaching, school, pupil and professors, in force during that period and disseminated at festival opportunities, such as the contribution of the parties to the formation of an official nacional memory history. The present investigation proved that more than a moment of confraternization, display of enjoyment and happiness, the educational parties had other functions, they were privileged moments of apprenticeship, dissemination of knowledge, of rules and values legitimated by school and by society.

Abstract:
While many historical articles and chapters on the foundations of Instructional Design and Technology (IDT) have painted an accurate picture of the field, it has been 21 years since anyone has given emphasis to the relationships of influence among IDT scholars. Many have written on various elements of the field, emphasizing events according to their own experience, which have increased our overall understanding of IDT. However, without insight on the connections between these pieces, the field appears to be only a broad array of isolated silos, each filled with its own research interest. This research sought to discover IDT's genealogy of influence. Three main research questions were asked: "Currently, who are the most influential scholars in IDT?" "Who influenced today's most influential scholars?" and "What ideas were most influential in the scholars' relationships?" The ten most influential names in IDT were discovered, and their genealogies of influence were traced. The ideas that were most influential in the relationships between theorists were summarized into the following groups of fields: General Education, IDT (and its contributors), Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology, and Adult and Higher Education. This research found an IDT field that was very diverse but very connected. Another important result was much less expected: the prevalence of psychology as a significant influence on both past work and current big ideas. Implications are discussed, such as revising definitions of the field.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the evolution of curatorial practice in Britain and the United States in the first four decades of the twentieth century through an analysis of the formative years of two museums, the Wallace and Frick Collections, and of two academic programmes, the Fogg Art Museum Course at Harvard University and the Courtauld Institute of Art at the University of London. Through these case studies, this study charts the emergence and development of a specialised curatorial knowledge base that was influenced by traditions of connoisseurship and criticism and shaped by discussions surrounding art history’s disciplinary parameters taking place in the museum, the press, the art market and the university. This investigation makes visible the processes through which art museum curators, keepers and directors collaborated in the creation and standardisation of their own expertise and contends that this quest was fundamentally intertwined with struggles for authority, agency and professional recognition. The manifestation of this expertise resulted in a renegotiation of institutional power dynamics and gave rise to a new type of art museum leader: the connoisseur-scholar, who performed an important function in the art museum’s transition from a space dominated by gentlemanly amateurs to one in which academically trained art historians increasingly assumed positions of authority. Asserting that the formation of this knowledge base cannot be separated from the academic institutionalisation of art history and curatorial training, this study demonstrates that individuals operating in the spheres of the art museum and the university were engaged in a dialogue through which the core values of these respective endeavours were realised. Detailing these processes and relationships and locating them within the context of a shift towards aesthetic idealism, this thesis provides insight into the historical origins of modern-day curatorial practice in Britain and the United States.

Abstract:
This dissertation deals with aspects of axiomatization, intuition and visualization in the history of mathematics. Particular focus is put on the end of the 19th century, before David Hilbert's (1862–1943) work on the axiomatization of Euclidean geometry. The thesis consists of three papers. In the first paper the Swedish mathematician Torsten Brodén (1857–1931) and his work on the foundations of Euclidean geometry from 1890 and 1912, is studied. A thorough analysis of his foundational work is made as well as an investigation into his general view on science and mathematics. Furthermore, his thoughts on geometry and its nature and what consequences his view has for how he proceeds in developing the axiomatic system, is studied. In the second paper different aspects of visualizations in mathematics are investigated. In particular, it is argued that the meaning of a visualization is not revealed by the visualization and that a visualization can be problematic to a person if this person, due to a limited knowledge or limited experience, has a simplified view of what the picture represents. A historical study considers the discussion on the role of intuition in mathematics which followed in the wake of Karl Weierstrass' (1815–1897) construction of a nowhere differentiable function in 1872. In the third paper certain aspects of the thinking of the two scientists Felix Klein (1849–1925) and Heinrich Hertz (1857–1894) are studied. It is investigated how Klein and Hertz related to the idea of naïve images and visual thinking shortly before the development of modern axiomatics. Klein in several of his writings emphasized his belief that intuition plays an important part in mathematics. Hertz argued that we form images in our mind when we experience the world, but these images may contain elements that do not exist in nature.

This research aimed to outline an understanding of how students and their legal guardians, in their personal lives and during their school education, perceive the schooling’s process in the context of Special Education in the perspective of Inclusive Education. As sources for the data production, we had the bibliographical and documentary research, and interviews that were textualized, carried out in the light of the Oral History methodology practiced by the Oral History and Mathematics Education Group (Grupo de História Oral e Educação Matemática - Ghoem). This study provides new elements for this group's recent research line called Narratives and (Inclusive) Mathematics Teaching and Learning, one of which aims at producing and using narratives of teachers and students with disabilities to understand aspects of Inclusive Education. From the narratives, it was possible to establish reflections on the daily life of a visually impaired student inside and outside the classroom, what mothers did or do to obtain medical treatment and education to their sons or daughters, and how the teachers and the school, as a whole, deal with these students. It was also possible to see how students view issues of disability in relation to the other without disability and in relation to oneself, as well as the question of the received training that is inevitably associated with the teachers’ formation. In this way, it is also possible to envisage that a collaborative education should take place in universities and in schools aiming at the training of qualified teachers and specialists. Finally, it is necessary to reflect that, as a society, if nothing changes in the macro, it will not be possible to change the school environment and, consequently, Mathematics Education is directly influenced. Inclusion will not occur if the concepts of standardization, normality and the idealization of homogeneous students are perpetuated in the school environment. Thus, this work contributes to (Inclusive) Mathematics Education bringing new elements to the discussion.

Abstract:
It is the author's belief that middle school mathematics is greatly taught in isolation with little or no mention of its origin. Teaching mathematics from a historical perspective will lead to greater understanding, student inspiration, motivation, excitement, varying levels of learning, and appreciation for this subject. This thesis will develop four units that will incorporate original source documents and selected historical topics surrounding computation, numbers, and early calculating devices. Many of the units will center on the Rhind Papyrus and The Treviso Arithmetic. These units will be appropriate to middle school, with an emphasis on 6th grade.

In the last few decades, the study of human history has been fundamentally changed by our ability to detect the signatures left within our genomes by adaptations, migrations, population size changes, and other processes. Rapid advances in DNA sequencing technology have now made it possible to interrogate these signals at unprecedented levels of detail, but extracting more complex information about the past from patterns of genetic variation requires new and more sophisticated models. This thesis presents a suite of sensitive and efficient statistical tools for learning about human history and evolution from large-scale genetic data. We focus first on the problem of admixture inference and describe two new methods for determining the dates, sources, and proportions of ancestral mixtures between diverged populations. These methods have already been applied to a number of important historical questions, in particular that of tracing the course of the Austronesian expansion in Southeast Asia. We also report a new approach for estimating the human mutation rate, a fundamental parameter in evolutionary genetics, and provide evidence that it is higher than has been proposed in recent pedigree-based studies.

This study deals with the teaching of History in Literacy cycle, specifically about the place of this discipline in the process of children's literacy in Vitoria da Conquista county, Ba (20102014). We have analyzed the National Pact for Literacy at the Right Age (NPLRA), a federal program, which expresses the importance of a diversified curriculum for this cycle, composed of all the areas that composes the curriculum, the use of this Program justifies in the time frame, as we analyze our object before and after the accession in Bahia county to NPLRA. For this, we work with literacy women teachers, coordinators of the Municipal Secretary of Education (MSE) of the aforementioned and school coordinators. We have analyzed the conception of literacy of these professionals because we believe that it directly influences in the direction that school gives to the scholar discipline History. In this sense, we also analyzed the express curriculum and the real curriculum for the concerned discipline and the initial training and continuing training of literacy teachers. We use a diversified corpus documentary that includes: official documents of the Department of Education for the cycle we studied; express curriculum and Decennial Plan of Education of Vitoria da Conquista / BA 2008-218 , project of four Education Degree Course, courses programming and discipline menus that deals with methodology and History teaching in these courses, questionnaire applied with coordinators of SME and transcribed interviews with literacy teachers and school coordinators teachers . We use classic researchers who are dedicated to teaching History, such as Abud (2007), Bittencourt (2009), Cerri (2011) and Fonseca (2009). Our work is guided by the principles of Cultural History and the oral method and is based on the principles of qualitative research. We realize that the school discipline History still holds a supporting place in the scenario of star literacy process by duet between Portuguese and Mathematics.

Abstract:
Why do schools teach mathematics, and why do they teach the mathematics that they do? In this three-part dissertation, I argue that the justifications offered by national education systems are not convincing, and that students are tested on content whose purpose neither they nor their teachers clearly understand. In the first part of the dissertation, I propose a theoretical framework for understanding the content and pedagogy of school mathematics as a set of practices reflecting socio-political values, particularly in relation to labor and citizenship. Beginning with a critical study of history, I trace the origins of modern mathematics education, in the process unearthing common, unexamined assumptions regarding the place and form of mathematics education in contemporary society. In the second part of the dissertation I use the above theoretical framework to re-examine the literature on mathematical word problems. Word problems have interested research because they operate at the intersection between mathematics, education, and labor. I argue that scholarly discussions of word problems have so far adopted unexamined assumptions regarding the role of history, the structure of everyday life, and the relationship between mathematics and other disciplines. Through the lens of political economy I examine these assumptions and offer new categories and explanation for understanding word problems. In the final part of the dissertation, I apply my theoretical framework to practice. Using a dialogical approach, I present a group of undergraduate students and pre-service teachers with artifacts and problems that embody some of the defining tensions of mathematics education. Through twelve weeks of in-depth discussion, fieldwork and exploration, students eventually arrive at a more critical understanding of the social purpose of mathematics and the impact of this purpose on its teaching and learning in various contexts. The results for the students include an expanded vision of the possibilities of mathematics, a radical critique of its place in society, and reports of reduced math anxiety as well as increased curiosity toward mathematics.

Abstract: In this study, our purpose is to achieve a historical constitution of some school practices that mobilized the cultural object function, at the city of Campinas (SP), since the middle of 1960 decade until the mid of 1990 decade, a period in which Brazilian school mathematical education was under the remarkable influence of the new math movement. In this sense, we composed a documental support constituted by interviews with teachers, mathematical textbooks, curricular guides and proposals produced by the Coordenadoria de Ensino e Normas Pedagógicas (CENP) of the State of São Paulo. Based on the dialogue that we established with this documental support, we tried to give emphases, in that history of school practices of cultural mobilization, to the idiosyncratic properties of these practices, as to the values these practices transmitted, to the institutional conditional elements that gave form to the same practices and to the asymmetrical power relation that enveloped them

Abstract:
This thesis work describes the design, development and evaluation of a mobile application called Hidden History. This application lets users discover and explore three types of landscapes (Historic, Scenic and Cultural) using three different modes of discovery (Route, Explore and Tour). Before designing Hidden History, the feature set of other applications that help users explore surrounding landscapes were identified and analyzed. Hidden History was then designed to implement the best features of these applications and offer several functionality improvements. Design began with iterative paper prototyping, following which a high fidelity, digital prototype was created. The high fidelity prototype was tested through two rounds of usability testing with target users. All the users found the application useful. User testing revealed many issues and areas of improvements for the application. By iteratively prototyping and testing the Hidden History application with users, researchers created a mobile application that better supports the discovery of landscape history. The thesis concludes with suggestions for future work to further improve the application.

Abstract:
My thesis examines Thomas Hobbes's attempt to develop a mathematical account of nature. I argue that Hobbes's conception of how we should think quantitatively about the world was deeply indebted to the ideas of his ancient and medieval predecessors. These ideas were often amenable to Hobbes's vision of a demonstrative, geometrically-based science. However, he was forced to adapt the ancient and medieval models to the demands of his own thoroughgoing materialism. This hybrid resulted in a distinctive, if only partially successful, approach to the problems of the new mechanical philosophy.

Davies, James Edgar. "Changes of Setting and the History of Mathematics: A New Study of Frege." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Mathematics & Statistics, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/4330.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses an issue in the philosophy of Mathematics which is little discussed, and indeed little recognised. This issue is the phenomenon of a ‘change of setting’. Changes of setting are events which involve a change in a scientific framework which is fruitful for answering questions which were, under an old framework, intractable. The formulation of the new setting usually involves a conceptual re-orientation to the subject matter. In the natural sciences, such re-orientations are arguably unremarkable, inasmuch as it is possible that within the former setting for one’s thinking one was merely in error, and under the new orientation one is merely getting closer to the truth of the matter. However, when the subject matter is pure mathematics, a problem arises in that mathematical truth is (in appearance) timelessly immutable. The conceptions that had been settled upon previously seem not the sort of thing that could be vitiated. Yet within a change of setting that is just what seems to happen. Changes of setting, in particular in their effects on the truth of individual propositions, pose a problem for how to understand mathematical truth. Thus this thesis aims to give a philosophical analysis of the phenomenon of changes of setting, in the spirit of the investigations performed in Wilson (1992) and Manders (1987) and (1989). It does so in three stages, each of which occupies a chapter of the thesis: 1. An analysis of the relationship between mathematical truth and settingchanges, in terms of how the former must be viewed to allow for the latter. This results in a conception of truth in the mathematical sciences which gives a large role to the notion that a mathematical setting must ‘explain itself’ in terms of the problems it is intended to address. 2. In light of (1), I begin an analysis of the change of setting engendered in mathematical logic by Gottlob Frege. In particular, this chapter will address the question of whether Frege’s innovation constitutes a change of setting, by asking the question of whether he is seeking to answer questions which were present in the frameworks which preceded his innovations. I argue that the answer is yes, in that he is addressing the Kantian question of whether alternative systems of arithmetic are possible. This question arises because it had been shown earlier in the 19th century that Kant’s conclusion, that Euclid’s is the only possible description of space, was incorrect. 3. I conclude with an in-depth look at a specific aspect of the logical system constructed in Frege’s Grundgesetze der Arithmetik. The purpose of this chapter is to find evidence for the conclusions of chapter two in Frege’s technical work (as opposed to the philosophical). This is necessitated by chapter one’s conclusions regarding the epistemic interdependence of formal systems and informal views of those frameworks. The overall goal is to give a contemporary account of the possibility of setting-changes; it will turn out that an epistemic grasp of a mathematical system requires that one understand it within a broader, somewhat historical context.

Abstract:
For a long time, women have struggled to gain complete acceptance in the mathematics field. The purpose of this paper is to explore the history of women in the field of mathematics, the impact and experiences of current female mathematicians, and the common trends for women in the mathematics field, through literature review and personal interviews. This paper looks at the lives of four famous female mathematicians, as well as female mathematicians in the Claremont Colleges who were interviewed for this paper. Specifically this paper examines the discrimination they faced and how they overcame this discrimination, as well as the contributions they have made to the mathematics field. In addition, studies about the effects of gender on mathematics achievement were explored. This paper tries to bring the conclusions of these studies together to present arguments from different perspectives. It also recognizes trends and changes in favor of women in the mathematics field in recent years. In spite of the contributions made by women and the improvements that have come about for women in the field, including the increased number of doctoral recipients, women still face challenges in gaining complete acceptance. Continued change can occur through mentoring and encouraging young women to pursue careers in the mathematics field.

The intention of this work is to identify of which way Pascal solved mathematical problems of integration, making use of the indivisibles. For this we consulted in particular three of his works: Postestatum Numericarum Summa, Lettre De M. Dettonville A. M. de Carcavi and the Treatise on the Arithmetical Triangule. We saw the close connection that exist between these works, namely, the first of them is showed the general rule to find areas under curves y = x2 , as well as it shows the relation between the sums of numerical potences with continuous magnitudes He makes the integration of curves according to approach of indivisibles. Already on the second, itþs associate directly to the third work, is presented the understanding of indivisible and the infinitive little in the constitution of the continuous, and also in the relation of simple, triangular and piramidal sums (found from the arithmetical triangule) with their respective integrals. In this way, in order to understand what happened in the 17th century and to know the possibles mathematical influences of Pascal, we search others methods of integration like those used by the Greeks, that is to say, the method of exhaustion and the techniques of the 16th century. Such being the case, it was possible to observe that its procedures of integration can be contemplated in two aspects: the first one, as a contribution for the history development calculation, in a period that it was the eminence of being structured. The second one detach the relation existent with the modern calculation, however, its theoretical field is based on indivisibles ones.

Abstract: The intention of this work is to identify of which way Pascal solved mathematical problems of integration, making use of the indivisibles.

We intend to present the development of mathematical logic in Brazil focusing mainly in the first six decades of the twenty century, presenting studies and researchers who contributed to consolidate and develop the logic as a field of research in Brazil. We will discuss about three books we believe that are more relevant in the History of Logic in Brazil: As Ideas Fundamentais da Matemática, by Manuel Amoroso Costa, published in 1929; Elementos de Lógica Matemática, by Vicente Ferreira da Silva, published in 1940; and O Sentido da Nova Lógica, by Willian Van Orman Quine, published in 1944. The logic presents a qualitative upgrade by the end of the fifties, when two centers obtain a great highlight: one at University of Sao Paulo (USP), in Sao Paulo city, with Professor Edison Farah and the other one at the former National Faculty of Philosophy, in Rio de Janeiro city. In the present study, we will pay special attention to the pioneers of the Sao Paulo group that, in the end of the fifty decade, upon the leadership of Professor Edison Farah, organized a group of researchers in logic and fundamentals of mathematics. Professors Benedito Castrucci, Newton Carneiro Affonso da Costa, Mario Tourasse Teixeira, and Leonidas Hegenberg took part of this group that used to have their meetings and seminars in the Department of Mathematics at University of Sao Paulo.

Abstract:
Genetic variation contains detailed and quantitative evidence about the history of populations. The historical traces of demographic growth and contraction, as well as the history of human disease, have left traces on the patterns of modern variation and can be studied by sampling present-day populations. However, the data sets that are necessary in order to take full advantage of this living archaeological record have not been available until recently. The quality and quantity of data have increased dramatically during the past decade because of the identification of polymorphisms, including SNPs and microsatellites, that are much more amenable to mathematical modeling and efficient genotyping than earlier marker systems. The research in this thesis has been carried out in response to the need to provide new methods of analysis to match the new types of data. Chapter 1 describes multilocus tests of demographic history and their application to real data. Chapter 2 describes how the pattern of linkage disequilibrium around a disease-predisposing mutation can be used to estimate the date of a mutation that is, the age of the most recent common ancestor of a set of modern samples. Finally, Chapter 3 draws several direct connections between human evolutionary history and medical genetics.

Abstract:
My thesis project is a means of understanding the conditions associated with success and failure in the American film industry. This is carried out by tracking the careers of several thousand actors and actresses, and the number of votes that their movies have received on IMDb. A fundamental characteristic of film career success is that of influence from prior success or failure—consider that an established “star” will almost certainly receive opportunities denied to an unknown actor, or that a successful actor with a string of poorly received films may stop receiving offers for desirable roles. The goal for this project is to to develop an understanding of how these past events are linked with future success. The results of this project show a significant difference in career development between actors and actresses—actors’ career trajectories are significantly influenced by a small number of “make or break” films, while actresses’ careers are based on overall lifetime performance, particularly in an ability to avoid poorly-received films. Indeed, negatively received films are shown to have a distinctly greater influence on actresses’ careers than those that were positively received. These results were obtained from a model using machine learning to find which movies from actors’ and actresses’ pasts tend to have the most predictive information. The parameters for which movies should be included in this set was optimized using a genetic learning algorithm, considering factors such as: film age, whether it was well-received or poorly-received, and if so, to what magnitude, and whether the film fits with the natural periodicity that many actors’ and actresses’ careers exhibit. Results were obtained following an extensive optimization, consisting of approximately 5000 evolutionary steps and 200,000 fitness evaluations, done over 125 hours.

Abstract:
An accurate evaluation of total population density is required in many ecological and biological field. To protect crops from pest attacks, the population density of pests must be evaluated adequately. Accurate information obtained as a result of trapping in ecological monitoring is beneficial for decision-making purposes when implementing a control action. In pest monitoring, a classic technique of evaluating density based on a statistical method may result in poor accuracy. Accuracy can be optimised by applying alternative numerical integration methods to the problem. We explain how insufficient information regarding population density negatively affects the accuracy of estimation. Consequently, a coarse grid problem arises where the numerical integration methods are no longer valid. The evaluation of integration error is now a random variable and the probabilistic approach is used, due to the uncertainty in sampling data. In this thesis several population models have been considered to explain that the value of correlation coefficient on a coarse sampling grid is lost even if the true value is close to one. Phenomenon of ghost synchronization has been observed when the value of correlation coefficient on a coarse sampling grid is close to one but in reality the dynamics are not correlated.
