It is likely that the forms of organization of tourism in the United Kingdom will change and improve, but the flow of tourists to the UK will not dry up, including from Russia. At the heart of it will remain the dominant business, educational and cognitive forms of tourism.

Abstract:
Songkhla Lake Basin has a long history of at least 6,000 years and has a wide variety of tourism resources including nature, history, beliefs, culture and various traditions of the local people. It covers 3 provinces, the whole area of Phatthalung, 12 districts of Songkhla and 2 districts of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. It has an area of approximately 8,727 square kilometers. There are many tourist attractions because the basin has a long history through different eras, natural, historic, ancient sites, and the culture of the local people. In 2018, both Thai and foreign tourists visited Songkhla and Phatthalung, which is the main area of Songkhla Lake Basin. The total number of tourists that came was 7,628,813 and 1,641,841 and an income of 68,252.64 and 3,470.96 million baht was generated from each province, respectively (Ministry of Tourism and Sports, 2020). Although Songkhla Lake Basin has various tourist attractions, the promotion of tourism with the involvement of government agencies in the past mainly focused on promoting tourism along with the tourist attractions rather than encouraging tourists to experience and learn the culture of the people living in the area; the culture that reflects the uniqueness of the people in the south. This study, therefore, aims to find creative tourism activities in SLB in order to increase the value of tourism resources, create tourism activities that are aligned with the resources available in the community and increase the number of tourists in the area. Data for this study were collected using a secondary source of data collection method. It was done through a literature review of related documents, texts, magazines, and research which focus on Songkhla Lake Basin as a guideline for designing tourism activities. The field survey was done through twelve community-based tourism sites in SLB to find creative tourism activities. Data on each activity were collected in detail by interviewing the tourism community leaders and the local people. Content analysis was used to describe the individual open-ended questions by focusing on the important issues and the information obtained was presented as a narrative. Abstract:
COVID-19 has led to the biggest tourism crisis in modern Spanish history. Although its borders were opened in June 2020, incoming international tourism to Spain was very low. Tourist behavior, however, has been very diverse between types of tourism. Data from credit card transactions showing tourist behavior in 33 destinations representative of various types of tourism were analyzed. Results show that differences in tourist behavior between destinations can be explained by risk perception and the proximity of the destination to home, which favors natural areas and charming coastal cities. This study contributes to the academic literature by studying the effective behavior of international tourists in the time of COVID-19.

Jarvis, Amelia. "Representations of Solitary Confinement in Four Ontario Penal History Museums." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/38682.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines representations of solitary confinement at four penal history museums in the province of Ontario, Canada: the Olde Gaol Museum in Lindsay, the L’Orignal Old Jail in L’Orignal, the Peel Art Gallery Museum and Archives in Brampton, and Kingston Penitentiary in Kingston. Engaging with Brown’s (2009) theory of “penal spectatorship” and Cohen’s (2001) work on states of denial, I investigate how these representations of solitary confinement challenge and/or reinforce the idea that segregation is a necessary practice in operational carceral institutions. I identify three dominant themes. The first theme is who ends up in solitary confinement and why. The museums justify the necessity of solitary confinement by emphasizing its usefulness in neutralizing dangerous and unpredictable prisoners, along with its supposed ability to promote prisoner protection and the management of mental health needs. The second theme pertains to the duration prisoners spend in solitary confinement and the conditions they experience. The museums do not problematize prisoners’ length of stay in solitary confinement, nor the conditions of the cells in which they are held, rather historical penal discourses are used to demonstrate improvements over time, without problematizing its present uses. The third theme arising from my analysis concerns the impacts of solitary confinement on prisoners. The museums emphasize the positive effects that solitary confinement can have on prisoners such as providing the opportunity for contemplation, while information on the negative effects of isolation including exacerbating or triggering mental health issues are largely absent. Taking these findings into consideration, I argue that the penal history museums I examined foster social distance between visitors and those in conflict with the law by legitimating the exclusion of the latter, while reinforcing the idea that solitary confinement is a necessary practice in carceral institutions today. .

B, Martin Valérie. "Reassessing history : Native American narratives in Kentucky tourism." Master's thesis, Université Laval, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11794/33139.

Full text
Abstract:
In all societies, power dynamics greatly influence memory. British and American colonialism, and relocation policies, like the Indian Removal Act (1830), had a strong impact on Native American presence in the cultural landscape of the Southeast United States. The production of collective memory through commemoration, tourism and education is a reflection of the power relations within society. It also shows which events in the past still define the present. This master’s thesis seeks to understand how narratives of the past influence today’s narratives about Native Americans in Kentucky, as well as how these narratives are inscribed in the cultural landscape of the state. Kentucky holds a rich pre-colonial history that is still visible on the landscape. Many artifacts can be found on the land and bear witness to the long-standing Native American presence in Kentucky. However, according to Kentucky’s dominant history, the territory was ''empty'' at the time of first contact. The contradiction that exists between this myth and the abundance of archaeological evidence, and the way it is translated into the cultural landscape, has seldom been studied. This myth provides the basis for, among other things, education and tourism, and promotes an inaccurate image of the Native presence in Kentucky, which contributes to keeping Native American identities in the past. The colonial means used to erase Native American presence in the United States went further than the violence of the federal policies of assimilation and relocation. Subtler methods, like commemoration and myths, have allowed the dominant culture to claim the land through memory. What are the factors that have created and helped to maintain the gap between Kentucky’s dominant interpretation of history and archaeological fact? What material representations on the cultural landscape of Kentucky are most evident of the gap? Heritage tourism will be the focus of this analysis.

Abstract:
This paper seeks to explore a number of issues in relation to tourism, particularly cultural tours, in Cape Town from the apartheid era to the new political dispensation in South Africa. Cultural tourism is not merely about commerial activities. It is an ideological framing of history of people, nature, and culture, a framing that has power to reshape culture and nature for its own needs. In the South African context, this can be seen from the early decades of the twentieth century, but for the purposes of this study it will focus from the 1950s onwards to the present political period. The dominant ideology and political conditions at a given time shape cultural tourism.

Abstract:
Through researching the history of the construction of Barcelona, one can see how the city has been intentionally shaped in order to draw in the public. From the end of the 19th century the city has strived to replicate attractions from other, more well known cities, in order to create a tourism industry of its own. This has resulted in a modern day tourism that is thriving, but lacking in substance. By looking at the political history of Catalonia one learns the powerful independence the city has always had. This strength has only been reflected in times of trouble, and the tourism industry of today has chosen to ignore this history. By only expressing itself to visitors as metropolitan and sophisticated, travelers cannot fully understand what it is that truly makes Barcelona unique.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter discusses future impacts on tourism, the impacts of tourism on people, society and destinations, the continuation of the human quest and demand for the 'new' and personal fulfilment that will fuel tourism supply, and the response of the tourism industry/academic community regarding forthcoming tourism-related issues, challenges and changes. First, through the evolution of tourism throughout the years, we have discussed in previous chapters how tourism was affected by different impacts such as global wars, pandemics, economic crises or natural disasters. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that such external influences will continue to affect the tourism industry and continue to shape its operations. Climatic change is another challenge that will affect the tourism industry. Second, we have examined how tourist inflows, tourism development and tourism activity affect destinations both positively and negatively. The lack of tourist inflows may also bring its share of impacts, as the world experienced through the recent pandemic. In all likelihood, sustainability issues will continue to remain a challenge in the future for both the tourism academic community and the tourism industry as a whole.

Abstract:
Abstract This era witnessed an upsurge of railway networks in countries such as Britain, Switzerland and India. The importance of railways for economies, as well as the travel and tourism industry, has been highlighted in several studies particularly in the last few decades. In current days, high-speed rail contributes to increased tourism arrivals in regional tourism economies of countries such as China and Japan, while technological advancements in trains may even embrace augmented reality games for passengers. In other cases, the train or/and journey itself becomes the main component of the tourist experience. In such cases, the rail experience is complemented with luxurious fittings or vintage aesthetics while travelling through scenic routes. This chapter also emphasizes the early beginning of war or dark tourism, wherein the cemeteries and/or museums related to World War I and II are starting to be part of the itineraries of travellers.

Abstract:
Tourism is important for the economy of our country and the tourist attractiveness of the cities of the Russian Federation is quite high. Combining history and tourism, several types of tourism (cultural and educational, industrial, event) can serve as a great impetus for the formation of new thematic routes and an interesting excursion program for tourists of different ages. In this article, the author of the work has formed a thematic material for the 60th anniversary of the flight of the first man into space and shows the importance of Russian cities through the prism of cosmonauts who made the first attempts to conquer outer space. This material can serve as a basis for the development of thematic brochures.

Abstract:
Increased transport facilities have created national and international mobility for different purposes. This mobility, which is generally regarded in the scope of tourism sector, is also widely used for health purposes. Countries, besides their natural, historical and cultural riches, are engaged in transnational the protection of health, the elimination of diseases and the development of health. It can be claimed that countries have made important efforts towards attracting tourists in the field of health tourism. Health has always been a significant value throughout history and people have sought different ways to develop and improve their wellbeing. Advanced transport means and easy access to information have brought people to search for health outside of their geographical area. Health tourism has also begun to arouse interest as a result of these searches, especially as an important source of income in the international scope. Health tourism has the potential to be influenced by numerous factors. Economic crisis situations, political turmoil and social movements in the countries are some of the factors that affect mobilization for health. In this study, the impact of the coup attempt on July 15, 2016 on Turkish Tourism Industry is analyzed through analysis of secondary data.

Abstract:
Since granted world heritage status by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1982, Old Havana has been the site of contested heritage practices. Critics consider UNESCO’s definition of the 143 hectare walled city center a discriminatory delineation strategy that primes the colonial core for tourist consumption at the expense of other parts of the city. To neatly bound Havana’s collective memory/history within its “old” core, they say, is to museumize the city as ”frozen in time,” sharply distinguishing the “historic” from the “vernacular.”While many consider heritage practices to resist globalization, in Havana they embody a complex entanglement of global and local forces. The Soviet Union’s collapse in 1991 triggered a crippling recession during what Fidel Castro called a“Special Period in a Time of Peace.” In response, Castro redeveloped international tourism—long demonized by the Revolution as associated with capitalist “evils”—in order to capture the foreign currency needed to maintain the state’s centralized economy. Paradoxically, the re-emergence of international tourism in socialist Cuba triggered similar inequalities found in pre-Revolutionary Havana: a dual-currency economy, government-owned retail (capturing U.S. dollars at the expense of Cuban Pesos), and zoning mechanisms to “protect” Cubanos from the “evils” of the tourism, hospitality, and leisure industries. Using the tropes of “heritage”and “identity,” preservation practices fueled tourism while allocating the proceeds toward urban development, using capitalism to sustain socialism. This paper briefly traces the geopolitics of 20th century development in Havana, particularly in relation to tourism. It then analyzes tourism in relation to preservation / restoration practices in Old Havana using the Plaza Vieja (Old Square)—Old Havana’ssecond oldest and most restored urban space—as a case study. In doing so, it exposes preservation/ restoration as a dynamic and politically complex practice that operates across scales and ideologies, institutionalizing history and memory as an urban design and identity construction strategy. The paper ends with a discussion on the implications of such practices for a rapidly changing Cuba.
