Abstract:
The author demonstrates that relations between the Russian state and the four Eastern Orthodox Christian patriarchates were not interrupted at the beginning of the Time of Troubles and continued in the traditional way. The main focus is on sources of information available in the Orthodox East concerning events in Russia: officials of the Russian church hierarchy (Arseny Elassonsky, Ignatius, Nectarios, and Matthew Kolitsydis), diplomatic missions (1603–1606), information about the Pretender Dmitry circulating in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (1602–1604), and Greek priests at the court of Prince Vasily Ostrozhky. The author investigates the levels and content of information about Russia at the end of the reign of Boris Godunov and during the reign of False Dmitry I that was promptly transmitted to the Patriarchs.

Abstract:
This article considers how Athanasius of Alexandria was read by Reformed Protestants of the early modern period. Attention is given to anthologies of patristic material, to John Calvin, Reiner Bachoff (Bachofius), and his Catechesis religionis christianae (1603), Abraham Scultetus’s Medulla theologiae patrum (1606), and Amandus Polanus of Polansdorf’s Symphonia catholica (1607, 1612). The latter three works provide evidence of a direct acquaintance with Athanasius’s writings. Though in comparison with other patristic quotations the Athanasian citations contained in them are in number rather limited, they do come from a broad range of Athanasius’s writings. The references are further not limited to Christology, but deal with a variety of themes relevant to Reformed theology.

Abstract:
This article sketches the theological profile of the Synopsis Purioris Theologiae (1625) by focusing on its exposition of the doctrine of God. Earlier disputations by Leiden theologians Franciscus Junius (1545–1602) and Franciscus Gomarus (1563–1641) are discussed as a background for the theology of Antonius Thysius (1565–1640), the author of the disputation in the Synopsis on God’s nature and attributes. For a further specification of the doctrinal position presented in the Synopsis, it is contrasted with the more innovative accounts proposed by Jacob Arminius (1559–1609) in his disputation “De natura Dei” (1603) and by Conrad Vorstius (1569–1622) in his Tractatus theologicus de Deo (1606). This analysis yields the conclusion that both Arminius and Vorstius advocated a structural differentiation between God’s inner essence and his outward operations, which leaves room for human freedom and independence. While the Synopsis does not explicitly discuss their views, in its own formulations itmaintains the common Reformed orthodox notion of divine simplicity, and keeps the balance between—on the one hand—the (hypothetical) necessity of God’s foreknowledge and decree, and—on the other hand—the contingency and freedom in the created world.

Smith, Jennifer H. "Unbinding order in history : conscience and civil good in the thought of Roger Williams, 1603-1683." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/30707.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis argues that Roger Williams' state fulfilled explicitly spiritual purposes, protecting and promoting the free exercise of conscience. The thesis further argues that far from elevating 'private' interest, Williams expected the strong exercise of natural conscience to endorse patterns of household and civil authority, securing individuals in the commission of their social positions and callings in civil society. Williams expected government and other civil agents to support the ordering exercise of natural conscience, to serve the public good in present history. The thesis corrects scholarly emphasis on Williams' 'separation of church and state,' showing how this historical accent has obscured the 'spiritual purposes' of his government in protecting the access of Grace to the souls of the elect, in present history. Incorporating notice of a previously unrecognised manuscript of 1666, the study examines Williams' account of the effects of 'natural history' (that is, history conditioned by original sin) or authority, power, order, and individuals within commonwealths. It explains the exceptional status Williams thought would accrue to states protecting conscience, the positive power of state institutions to promote and protect free conscience, and the related position of individuals within present commonwealths. Beginning with a detailed account of Williams' theological outlook, the thesis explores the social and political implications of original sin in history. Driven by these conclusions, it then gives full account of his expectations of 'democratical' government, before anatomising the practical mechanics of the collaboration Williams pursued between conscience, the state, and heads of households in Providence and Providence Plantations, forming an extended network of informal civil relationships to conform individual interests to community prerogatives.

Hickman, David John. "The religious allegiance of London's ruling elite, 1520-1603." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1995. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1317968/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses the role played by the ruling élite of London in the City's religious development during the Reformation. The contribution of London's rulers is placed within the broader context of the English Reformation. The central focus is the changing religious profile of the City élite from 1520-1603. Wills provide the core source material, in conjunction with data from parish records and the archives of the Corporation of London. Changes to the religious profile of the rulers are discussed in the context of the corporate identity of the élite, and in terms of the role of individual rulers within London's parishes and craft guilds. Stress is placed upon the importance of a relatively small number of well-placed individuals in influencing the course of religious change within the City. A small group within the lower strata of the élite had accepted a broadly evangelical religious position by the early 1530s. As a small, but socially significant body, this group supported the implementation of the Edwardian Reformation. By the 1560s a significant Protestant presence at the upper levels of City and parish government secured London's acceptance of the forms of worship required by the Elizabethan Church of England. The evangelical group within the élite aided the dissemination of evangelical religious ideas, while élite social roles ensured that some parishes experienced a 'Reformation from within' rather than simply one imposed from above. At the same time, the emergence of new patterns of public religious behaviour in the later sixteenth century permitted a wide range of religious positions to co-exist within a common complex of shared civic values and attitudes, preventing serious divisions along religious lines. In this regard London's rulers are compared with ruling groups in other major European cities. The continuing corporate unity of the ruling group thus owed less to religious conservatism or the outright victory of puritan ideals, than to participation in a Church whose outward forms of religious expression allowed for considerable latitude of religious belief.

The objective of this dissertation was to investigate the ways in which Elizabethan professional theatre practice was, at the same time, a product and a producer of historical changes. Following the construction of London s first purpose-built playhouse in 1576, theatre slowly became a lucrative business run by full-time professionals. Soon after this historical development, the professional companies suffered constant attacks. These claimed that plays propagated sin and idleness among those who watched or took part in them. Through the analysis of the anti-theatrical writings and laws produced between 1576 and 1603, we observed the nature of the changes in theatrical practice in London and questioned the motives behind the attacks against the stage. We found that the process of professionalization of the London companies incorporated many of the social changes at work at the time. However, the new theatres created new social spaces in which transgressive social practices found their place beyond the City s control. Therefore, the professional theatre played an active role in making these new social values visible

Tan, WeiYu Wayne. "The Careers of the Blind in Tokugawa Japan, 1603-1868." Thesis, Harvard University, 2015. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:17467393.

Abstract:
The blind deviate from bodily ideals and how we make sense of this difference matters. My dissertation examines the blind in Tokugawa Japan (1603–1868) to offer a contrasting perspective on disability from a non-Western society. The blind were impaired but not disabled. They were, in fact, enabled and engaged in careers that were mostly unthinkable to their peers in other contemporary societies. By far the most important enabling factor was the growth of a core institution called the tôdôza. I focus on the main professions through which the blind made their living—musical performance, moneylending, and medicine—and their relationships with the tôdôza. In my discussion, I investigate surprising aspects of the careers of the blind. These characteristics not only reflect the complex social history of the blind, but also reveal the intersections with critical developments in Tokugawa society. Founded as a society of blind musicians, the tôdôza was transformed into a political institution and later, a profit-driven organization of diverse professions. The narrative analyzes the social, political, and economic contexts of this transformation. Chapter one discusses the hierarchy of the tôdôza and the financial motives of moneylending. Chapter two looks at how rituals and myths were appropriated to strengthen the internal authority of the tôdôza. In chapter three, I discuss the representative lyrical genre of blind musicians called heikyoku and the increasing participation of sighted performers in writing texts. In chapter four, I explore how popular discourses about health compelled the tôdôza to innovate and concentrate on medical practice. My dissertation takes a fresh approach to Japanese history with insights from disability studies. The tôdôza supported the formation of blind communities and gave them political and economic leverage. This reverse perspective places the blind not on the margins, but instead refocuses the attention on their leading roles in transforming Tokugawa society. The history of disability in early modern Japan is also about the history of the tôdôza. By focusing on the tôdôza, my proposed approach highlights that the discourse of disability embraces the underemphasized but nonetheless important theme of enablement, which is crucial for retelling Japanese history.

Abstract:
Conventionally, the era that begins after the death of celebrated Ottoman sultan Suleyman I in 1566 is seen as the beginning of Ottoman decline. In line with the decline paradigm, late sixteenth century is also accepted as a time of political turmoil. This period is characterized by constant power struggles among Ottoman ruling elite and the deterioration of the classical Ottoman political order. Concerning the rise of new power elite (favourites) in the court and bureaucracy vis-a-vis the decreasing power of the sultans and grand vezirs, "evil counsellors" and the inaccessibility of the Ottoman sultan were chronic themes in the Ottoman Empire. Yet, at the same time, in most of the Ottoman political treatises access to and privacy with the sultan is restricted to a very limited number of the servants of the court and bureaucracy. Especially the communication between the sultan and the grand vezir is advised to be a secret. In view of this important political dictum, in the present study it is argued that the power also came from and built by the monopoly on information about the matters of state by the least number of people. In accordance with this view, the power politics of the late sixteenth century Ottoman political arena is analyzed as struggles over controlling the flow of information about the matters of state.

Abstract:
Abstract Firing temperatures in gas turbines have seen a steady increase over the years to allow for higher engine efficiencies and a decrease in hazardous emission levels. Conversely, these harsh conditions severely challenge the component lifetime, requiring a trade-off during the design process. Thus, it is crucial to understand temperature distribution across the majority of a component surface (>80%) to verify the design and component durability. While a range of temperature measurement techniques are available, these are primarily focused on lower temperatures, exhibit low durability (thermal paints), require line of sight (pyrometers), are destructive (thermal crystals) and only provide point measurements (thermocouples, thermal crystals). To overcome this challenge, Sensor Coating Systems (SCS) have developed Thermal History Coatings (THCs) to measure temperature profiles in the 900–1600°C range. This new temperature profiling capability records the past maximum exposure temperature in such a way that it can be determined once the component has already cooled down. THCs are comprised of oxide ceramics deposited via Atmospheric Plasma Spraying (APS) to create a robust coating. APS deposition employs several variable parameters; spray settings such as gun power, gas flow or scan rate can affect the particle exposure and thus, the microstructure of the coating and its temperature sensing performance. This two-part paper covers the THCs principles and demonstrates their capabilities for high-temperature applications. This first part shows, for the first time, the influence of APS parameters on luminescent measurements due to changes in the material microstructure. Extensive calibration data was used to develop a new model to relate the APS spray parameters to the luminescent properties in the as-deposited condition and consequent performance as a temperature sensor. The powder composition and the power and gas flow used during deposition were found to be the most influential parameters. The model identified the optimum spray parameters and was used to demonstrate THCs can achieve measurements in excess of 1600°C.

Abstract:
The variability of diesel jet structure, both as a function of time and between individual injection events, has important implications on the breakup and mixing of the jet. It is accepted that diesel jets become unstable due to interactions with the ambient gas, leading to breakup of the jet. This concept is the principle behind the Kelvin-Helmholtz and Rayleigh-Taylor models of diesel atomization. Very little information regarding diesel jet variability is available, however, in the near-nozzle region of the diesel jet, where primary breakup of the jet occurs. This is due to the presence of many small droplets, which strongly scatter visible light and render the spray opaque. X-ray radiography has been successfully used in recent years to probe the structure of diesel sprays with high spatial and temporal resolution. All of these previous measurements, however, were ensemble-averaged, measuring only persistent features of the spray. In the current study, measurements are performed at individual measurement points of single diesel injection events. These measurements are taken at several points near the injector exit for a non-hydroground nozzle with a single axial hole at two injection pressures (500 and 1000 bar). The variability of the start of injection, end of injection, and the time history of the spray density during the injection event are examined, as well as how these quantities change for different transverse positions across the jet.

Abstract:
Exhaust emissions from internal combustion engines are one of the leading sources of fine particulate matter emissions in urban areas. Off-road engines account for a substantial portion of the total emissions, and are subject to increasingly strict legislation as well as voluntary emissions reduction programs. The benefits of various emissions reduction programs are typically quantified with simplified, short duration field tests. In an inquiry into the suitability of such tests, this paper examines experimental data collected by portable, on-board monitoring systems on truck, tractor, construction equipment, marine and locomotive diesel engines with rated power ranging from 130 to 1550 hp and displacement ranging from 4 to 163 liters. In engines operated extensively at low load, such as some locomotive engines, substantial amounts of solids and liquids accumulate inside of the engine and in the exhaust system. These deposits are then driven off during subsequent operation at high load. As a result, the emissions of particulate matter may be elevated for a rather long time, on the order of tens of minutes, which is longer than the duration of the individual modes of most field emissions tests. Therefore, the emissions of fine particles measured during short (units of minutes per mode) tests may be affected by the accumulated deposits. If this phenomenon is overlooked and not properly accounted for, the measurements may be less repeatable or comparable, and the particulate matter emissions based on such measurements may be overestimated. On the other hand, it is not clear that the problem can be remedied if the engine is diligently preconditioned prior to the measurement — in this case, the measured values do not account for “excess” emissions associated with extended low-load operation.

Abstract:
The inducer has become an essential component of the modern turbopump. Many investigations have been performed to gain an understanding of the inducer’s adverse operational characteristics that can include fluctuating pressures, unsteady delivery flow and fluctuating loads that compromise reliability. Furthermore, design features have been evaluated that eliminate or attenuate this adverse behavior. This paper describes the first known application of an inducer to a turbopump which fueled a throttleable rocket engine dating from the early 1940’s. The pump is unique in its use of an integral backflow recirculator that corrects the effects of suction recirculation at off-design flow conditions. Modern analysis, including CFD, of this inducer provides insight into its design and operational behavior. The design of this historic inducer offers insight into modern approaches that will correct inducer instabilities.

Abstract:
Abstract To improve the efficiency of gas turbines, the turbine inlet temperature needs to be increased. The highest temperature in the gas turbine cycle takes place at the exit of the combustion chamber and it is limited by the maximum temperature turbine blades, vanes and discs can withstand. A combination of advanced cooling designs and Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBCs) are used to achieve material surface temperatures of up to 1200°C. However, further temperature increases and materials that can withstand the harsh temperatures are required for next-generation engines. Research is underway to develop next-generation CMCs with 1480 °C temperature capability, but accurate data regarding the thermal load on the components must be well understood to ensure the component life and performance. However, temperature data is very difficult to accurately and reliably measure because the turbine rotates at high speed, the temperature rises very quickly with engine startup and the blades operate under harsh environments. At the operating temperature range of CMCs, typically platinum thermocouples are used, however, this material is incompatible with silicon carbide CMCs. Other temperature techniques such as infrared cameras and pyrometry need optical access and the results are affected by changes in emissivity that can take place during operation. Offline techniques, in which the peak temperature information is stored and read-out later, overcome the need for optical access during operation. However, the presently available techniques, such as thermal paint and thermal crystals cannot measure above ∼1400°C. Therefore, a new measurement technique is required to acquire temperature data at extreme temperatures. To meet this challenge, Sensor Coating Systems (SCS) is focused on the development of Thermal History Coatings (THC) that measure temperature profiles in the 900–1600 °C range. THC are oxide ceramics deposited via air plasma spraying process. This innovative temperature profiling technique uses optically active ions in a ceramic host material that start to phosphoresce when excited by light. After being exposed to high temperatures the host material irreversibly changes at the atomic level affecting the phosphorescence properties which are then related to temperature through calibration. This two-part paper describes the THC technology and demonstrates its capabilities for high-temperature applications. In this second part, the THC is implemented on rig components for a demonstration on two separate case studies for the first time. In one test, the THC was implemented on a burner rig assembly on metallic alloys instrumented with thermocouples, provided by Pratt & Whitney Canada. In another test, the THC was applied to environmental barrier coatings developed by NASA, as part of a ceramic-matrix-composite system and heat-treated up to 1500°C. The results indicate the THC could provide a unique capability for measuring high temperatures on current metallic alloys as well as next-generation materials.
